This will probably the last time i go to Osaka sadly. Their service was very rushed. It was my sisters birthday party and i was the one to choose the restaurant. Food was cold and very unappetizing. Personally, feel that a lot of their stuff on the menu were copied from Ichiban and Fuji Yama.. they sang the birthday song and gave my sister fried ice cream. That same song and same dessert was from Fuji yama if I remember correctly from past experiences... They have a Grand rapids roll which is basically Fuji Yama's G.R. Roll. read more

Hibachi places always provide a unique dining experience if it's somewhere you go only once or twice a year. From place to place, you can pretty much expect the same type of entertainment from your table chef, and this place was no different... the usual smiley face made from oil, volcanic onion, spinning the eggs, etc. These guys liked to take chopped pieces of raw zucchini and flick them into our mouths with their spatulas. I actually caught the piece he tossed at my face! I love the aspect of cooking on the table in front of me until you see how much oil and butter they put on everything, but I guess that's what makes it so delicious. My only complaint about hibachi in general is that they cook the rice and noodles first and then move to veggies and meat, and by then the rice is usually cold. I wish we could cover our plates until the rest of the meal is ready. read more

Have to say that I went there on Wednesday which was half off on sushi night and the wait was an hour and a half long which was expected, thank goodness that my hotel is right next door. So when we finally got seated the lady kept bringing us beers and we got a free Miso Soup. Our food took quite awhile but I ordered 6 rolls and they were all really good. The sushi is definitely worth it and the staff was amazingly courteous and fun I had a great time there as well as the food being right on point I will b there every Wednesday. read more

Not sure why all the bad reviews. My wife and I went here on Saturday for lunch. Some co-workers had recommended. We had the teppanyaki and sushi. Couple of points: - Interior is very nice compared to exterior. - Food is cheap and portions are large (teppanyaki lunch was around $8/$9 pp). - Our teppanyaki chef was very entertaining and engaging. - Sushi was good. In fact, better than most of the more popular places around GR. We moved from DC and sushi here has been lacking. Will def. be back. read more

Very grossed out there was hair in my food, I expect higher food quality from Osaka. I used to work at a restaurant and would do a quality check on every food item that went out for take out. Clearly that was not done here as any reasonable worker would have easily seen this hair. read more

I went to Osaka for the half off grand opening deal. My hubby and I sat at the hibachi and had some cocktails. My lychee martini was delicious and the hibachi chefs proved very entertaining...dare I say randy. The usual pyrotechnics accompanied by singing and jokes made the passably good hibachi a special experience. (It also transformed a humdrum old date into a memorable, "adults only" night out.) I've been back to Osaka multiple times since to try the sushi on the half off sushi Wednesdays and have not been disappointed. I've tried the Osaka roll, the triangle roll, lobster lovers, spicy lobster, grand rapids roll, philadelphia, spider roll, and tuna sashimi. The Grand Rapids roll did not have the traditional seaweed wrapper and was somewhat bland but otherwise, the waitstaff suggested the other rolls and all had well-rounded flavors and yummy texture. The waitstaff is extremely helpful and considerate, too. They always hold the door for me (I'm usually toting a baby in a car seat) and are not intrusive in their waiting. And, as a mom, anyone who makes googoo faces and laughs when my baby cries instead of looking annoyed goes straight on my nice list. read more

I had such a great experience at this location. Sushi was out of this world good, favorite was the fancy lobster roll. The edamame for an appetizer was also delicious. Sake shots with Saborro Beer. Excellent wait staff and fair prices. Oh and don't forget the green tea mochi. A little bit of Japan right here in GR. Yum! read more

Love hibachi. Went with a group from work in the early afternoon so it was not too busy. Fun time. I had the shrimp which was very good. I really liked the yum yum sauce. The chef did a nice job too. He was entertaining. I would go back. read more

I only go there for the Monday half off sushi deal. It's cheap and decent sushi. What else can you expect? It gets busy during this day, so the sushi won't really be made to perfection, and the servers don't really care about you to be honest. They just get your order, come around ask if everything is okay once or twice, and fills up your water here and there. Bang for your buck sushi, average service, and nothing more. Usually my bills come up to be 60-120$, and without the 50% off, I wouldn't spend my time even thinking about going out for sushi... read more

This used to be my favorite place, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, this last time I went there the sushi made me very sick for the rest of the day. I had the California, sweet potato, and shrimp tempura roll. I hope I'm the only one that had this experience. read more

The food is amazing! I used to go here all the time, but after returning from living out of state for a few years I think they got better!

This place has done a major facelift. I was unaware that it had hibachi and would love to try it next time. I got sushi and it was better than average. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. If you like spicy food this is not the place for you. My boyfriend ordered a spicy dish, asked for it to be extra spicy, and it just wasn't. I am pretty sensitive to spice and I didn't notice spice if any kind when o tried it... read more

My friend and I stopped in for a late sushi lunch today. We hadn't read the reviews prior to arrival. I looked thru the reviews while my friend was in the restroom. The low reviews didn't turn us away. We ordered 4 different rolls- Tiffany, Dragon Vegetable, Sweet Potato, and California. We ordered all rolls in soy papers, as well as ginger salads and hot tea. We found out that the sushi was 50% off on Wednesdays- bonus! The ginger salad had a peanut flavor and was so good! Each roll was fresh and tasty. we were very happy with every thing we ordered. Service was fast and friendly. This will be our new go-to for sushi when traveling thru Grand Rapids! read more

The good: hibachi is the best I've EVER had. It's incredible. Pretty good show. Also, half off sushi on mondays and wednesdays, and it's always great! The bad: the service is meh. Osaka is truly one of my favorite restaurants. I've taken my daughters there several times and we always have a great experience. The sushi is tasty and beautifully presented. The hibachi experience is always entertaining. Shabu shabu is a nice social thing to do with friends. Don't do that if you're in a hurry. Everything here is meant to be savored. If you're in a hurry, tell the server. Otherwise go down the street to McDonald's. Thanks to all the chefs and waitstaff at Osaka. So glad to have you here in Grand Rapids. read more

Thought we would get sushi today when we went to Costco in Grand Rapids. Arrived shortly after their opening on the day. Ordered our food -- the unagi and salmon sushi showed up - very average - and finally, the ginza roll showed up, attractive but mushy, and we waited and waited for the dancing dragon roll to show up. I was hoping that would save the day. But after sitting there at the sushi bar waiting for 40 minutes, we canceled it and left. To their credit, they had brought us seaweed and edamame; however, we didn't want it and felt bad not eating it. It was like a bunch of kids were running the place and no one knew what was going on. They repeatedly told us that "the oil was heating." Very weird, uncomfortable time. We tipped more than 20% because it wasn't the fault of the sweet waitress. read more

The Sushi is great for the price on the 1/2 off Monday's. The men's bathroom is flat out disgusting, one urinal has been broke for months and smells of stale urine. The other stall is almost as nasty and they don't clean the mirror or sinks. So if you can eat without using the restroom, you'll be fine. read more

I came in for my first time on a Wednesday, and to my surprise I found that they have half off on sushi on Mondays and Wednesdays! Service was quick and the server was delightful... They were also quite accommodating, we had a large party and they were able to sit us quite quickly.. 5/5 would definitely recommend! read more

Went during their opening week when they offered 50% off, and boy am I glad that it was 50% off because I was very disappointed in the ShabuShabu and sushi. After just being in California and having Shabu over there (JazzCat Yummmm!!) this place is like eating at McDonalds. I ordered the spicy broth, and boy was it spicy..no flavor just spice, I think all they did was throw a bunch of peppers and hot chili into the broth. The meat that was given was not presented well at all, seem like they sliced some meat and threw it onto the plate. Vegi's were also given, and not to seem too picky but really iceburg salad for my shabu? And the fishballs i ordered were frozen solid, it still had ice on them. The sushi was so-so, I have had alot better in GR and this would rank on the lower half. I did not have their Hibachi and I plan not to b/c everything else did not meet my expectations. read more

WORST HIBACHI I HAVE EVER HAD!!! I understand as a first week opening there are certain exceptions to lengthy waits and customer service as all staff are in a training process. I enjoyed the atmosphere, however was met by a hostess who didn't smile, didn't make eye contact or acknowledge us. Instead she helped those currently waiting and eventually asked us, "how many". Once we were sat, it took more than 20 minutes before any server came to us (keep in mind we had waited 10 minutes at the door) and when she did, no introduction, no smile, just an explanation of how she would be bringing us water and be right back. I asked if the hot tea was decaffeinated (as I am not supposed to have caffeine). I was told she was going to let me know. 10 minutes later we were brought our drinks, including a tea that I didn't order with no answer to my question. While waiting my husband drew back his arm to find it covered in a sauce left over from a previous patron and find it all over the inside back of his chair, arm and shirt. Our table was only half wiped off with sauce spills and grease from the earlier sitters. I moved my foot to find there was food crammed under my seat, as well as a dirty napkin! Then, I went to use the restroom and saw that my entire back was covered with someone else rice!!!! By now I was about to leave except we got our salads and I was hungry. Little did I know it would be another 40 minutes before I got my soup...upon request...after 3 people at my table had already gotten theirs (leaving 6 of us waiting), and during the cooking of our hibachi. We started to run out of room so we ended up busing our own table and placing our used dishes on the neighboring dirty one. There was never once a server who came and asked about refills or if we needed anything. Not once during the entire meal. We were ALL remarking how thirsty we were. After ALL of us were done eating it took another 20 minutes to have my husband watching the TV and the server lean from a neighboring table and yell to him, "I'll be over after getting their order". Completely rude. My experience was one like I have never had before and I wish I had gone to McDonalds. I understand that there are kinks to be worked out upon opening but this was inexcusable. It was disgusting and took 2 1/2 hours for a horrible experience. Terrible customer service and horrible sanitation! read more

Perhaps one of the worst Asian dining experience ever! When we arrived at the front counter the hostess spoke Chinese to us. This is a Japanese rest? Okay that wasn't the bad part. We decided to Shabu and the stove was filled with grim, stale food from previous diners and filth. It was really disgusting to eat with that amount of bacteria. Anyway when the food arrived, most of it was still frozen and aged. We both got sick the following day and thought about contacting Health department but decided not to for the sake of troublesome. read more

I've come here for both sushi as well as hibachi, and I can only say good things about hibachi. Unfortunately, that is not he case for sushi. I have come when it was half off and regular price. And whichever the occasion you can expect to wait 10 minutes for a greet, 10 minutes to get your drinks, and then another 50-60 minutes to receive your meal. The food is wonderful, but the service is absolutely terrible. This establishment needs to re-train its servers on punctuality and politeness. read more

Someone told me that Osaka had some of the best sushi in GR. Sorry, I totally disagree. It was OK, but I've certainly had much better.

I'd just like to say that this was my first hibachi experience, and the atmosphere was very good. Our chef was fun, talkative, and skillful. The food was quite delicious. Something about the service was just OFF. I ordered a beer and our server asked if I wanted "Big or Small", 16oz or 22oz, respectively. I defiitely said SMALL. He brought a large. Later he came around and showed our whole table a live scallop, just to show us. He explained that since it was out of the water, it was dying, so he asked if any of us wanted to "try it". I was feeling adventurous, it was my birthday, and since he offered so casually, I saw nothing wrong with 'trying it'... ya know - because it was dying anyways. Fast forward to the check. .. BOOM... $17.50 for a live scallop. I'm sorry, but this server could have made it a LOT more clear that I wasn't just trying a scallop because it was dying, I was purchasing ONE scallop for the price of another entire entree... Un-real! We spoke with him about it, and he said the manager agreed to charge us only $8. Their sneaky up-sells are enough for me to write a review. So know that the food is good but they'll charge you more with every chance. read more

I tried half off sushi at Osaka for the first time last night. I got there pretty early, as I knew it would probably get busy quickly. My friend and I split about 6-7 rolls (mostly specialty rolls) and all of them were great! I would say it's definitely on par with the quality at Fujiyama (where I also love to go for half off sushi!). The fish all tasted fresh and the rolls were all pretty flavorful. They are a little on the smaller side, though, so be aware of that. (Similar size or a bit smaller than Fujiyama.) Our server was pretty good, she got slowed down a bit as it got busier there but that's to be expected! I will probably go back again for half off! The sashimi there is some of the cheapest I've found ($4-$5 for 3 pieces of sashimi). It is not included in the 1/2 off deal. All rolls are included though (even specialty rolls), unlike Fujiyama where you can only order certain ones and get half off. I liked that. read more

Went here for the sushi and it was amazing! The prices were fantastic and so was the food. I'm giving it four stars because the staff seemed very new. Well, we're sad things aren't as good as before. We had to chase down our waitress, who went missing - much to the frustration of the lead waitress who went looking for her, gave up, and humorlessly took our order and another table's order. The food was subpar, too: overcooked katsu, no wasabi for the sushi on either of our plates, no dish to put soy and wasabi in (several overly sweet dips came with it instead), and weak tea bags instead of brewed green tea. We gave up waiting for her to pick up our tab, and handed it to her on our way out. :-/ read more
