The family and groomsmen had some downtime early Saturday prior to my daughter's wedding. The Houston Orvis Store invited us in to cast some new fly rods while enjoying breakfast tacos and coffee that morning. It was a great event with 13 participants from the wedding party. Excellent service today from Kevin! He inspired me to write this review. I find shopping for clothing stressful, and I felt uplifted by my experience. Dad asked me to go to Orvis to get a dog leash last month. He had tried every dog leash he could find for his small wiggly dog. Orvis carries a rope leash that is perfect and she doesn't wiggle lose. On my mission to fetch a leash, I was pleased to see the large selection of shirts that look awesome on Dad. It inspired me to freshen up his wardrobe too. He looks excellent! The female staff person on that day rescued me as I was loading up my arms. She too was kind and respectful. great store with very helpful sales folks. I needed a backpack for a stressful trip with an elderly high maintenance family member. i shopped at competing store and then called the Houston Orvis store. I received clear information about storage capacity, in flight access and benefits of those backpacks in stock. they set aside the one remaining item which I picked up later in the day. I also needed to replace a badly damaged dog bed for our lab . when I explained how active he had been and the damaged product, the associate located my purchase via: cell no. and offered to replace the damaged dog bed at no cost. wow! great customer service with good products that Orvis stands behind. read more

I had an Orvis catalog on hand during my recent trip to Houston, and since I was in the neighbourhood, I decided to stop in. A few years ago, I bought a nice casual jacket here when the Houston store was more or less across the street. Orvis sells high quality and handsome clothes, travel items, and gifts. I have usually been drawn to their signature green and leather luggage, briefcase, etc. items, most of which I think are made by J.W. Hulme in St. Paul MN. And even though I don't fish, Orvis' angler department is still a fun place to look around, especially when one of the staff is talking shop with a customer. Orvis merchandise can be pricey and I usually wait for or randomly come upon one of their sales. read more

Great selection of tying material and super cool sales guys. We sat around, tied flies and talked about about my upcoming trip. They even looked up flows of the river I'm fishing and helped with some planning advice. Chill environment and everything you'd expect out of an Orvis store and fly shop. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! My husband has lived in Houston for 50 years and been a loyal customer at this location since they opened. Not anymore. A week ago, we decided to add two pieces of luggage to some he'd already purchased. We spent almost $800 (just this time). When I brought the luggage home, my husband noticed one of the leather luggage tags was broken at the buckle. We were traveling the next day, so I had no time to return it. When we got home, I took the tag in, explaining my husband was traveling again in two days. Noting that there were several pieces of luggage on the sales floor that matched my husband's set, I asked for a new tag. They told me they had no "extra" tags. First, the sales person offered to order one that did not match. Our luggage is tan and hunter green. He wanted to order orange or black. When I asked for one that matched, he actually had to go get a manager. The manager said he could get one that matched, but it would take at least a week. I explained my husband had to travel in two days. I suggested that instead of me having to bring a whole bag back that we had used to exchange it just so we could just get a new tag, that they give me a tag off of a piece they had in stock. He then rudely suggested that I wanted them to sell another customer luggage with a broken tag. I said "No, since you also keep stock in the back and there are several pieces up front, I was hoping you could give me a tag, set your bag aside, and then when your tag comes in, you can put the bag back on the floor. "I won't be caught with my pants down. I sell these fast..." Translation: "I don't care that you are now the one caught with your pants down having to travel with no tag, or about the almost $800 you just gave me, I'm only worried about the next customers who may or may not buy this luggage this week I've already got your money. When I took the tag and told the salesperson I would just bring the broken tag back with the tag and my receipt the next day, my phone rang within 30 minutes. They "called another store" and WOW! somehow, they found a tag. I'm very sure they just didn't want to damage out a whole bag and pulled a tag from the back. I did get the tag, but they have lost a customer permanently. Apparently, it won't matter, because they just wait for the next customer anyway... read more

I would say the store is 90% male clothing and 10% female. The women only had a little corner of clothes. We had as much stuff as the dogs.

If you hunt, fish or enjoy the outdoors or just want to look like you do in your big $$$$ 4WD that has never seen dirt - this is the place to go. I love the wonderful people, quality clothes and gifts and always the annual tent sale. Thank you for Orvis for not selling all the Chinese crap. What a spot. read more

Haha Nichole S. you are the reason so many people hate working in retail. You shouldn't have waited a day before he traveled to buy luggage, that sure sounded like a smart thing to do as a grown up. Every customer is a loyal customer, get off your high horse already. You aren't getting treated any more special because you decided to spend $800. That's how retail works, you treat everyone as if they are equals. I'm pretty sure they are glad you are no longer a customer and probably laughed at you when you left the store. You just want everything handed to you like most of the Orvis customers, grow up and plan ahead next time. Use that thing inside your skull, also known as a brain. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences at this location. I always hang out and talk to the fly fishing guys in the back, they go out of their way to educate you about any questions you have even if you don't spend any money there. I am always respectful of the staff and receive the same type of treatment (funny how that works). If you ever are looking to learn about fly fishing go here and speak with someone about it. Honestly the worst experience I've ever had buying articles of clothing, and not because of the clothing either. My girlfriend and I walked in about 15 minutes before closing as we had been at work, knowing that they would be closing right after us. We walk in and my girlfriend asks if they have a specific jacket and they said politely (there were three of them in the empty store) "no we don't sell that anymore. Haven't for a few years unfortunately". Didn't ask any questions as to what we were looking for, or if they could help us with anything. They immediately just went back to talking to each other about some way a certain shirt fits. We walked around the store, trying to find things for the Safari my girlfriend is going on, absolutely lost because we had never been in the store and didn't know which side of the store had lighter or heavier jackets, etc. My girlfriend asked which of the pieces at the front were on sale and the lady responded which were and then said "just to let you know we close in a few minutes", which really peeved me. We continued to walk around trying to quickly find what she needed, still without even a whisper seeing if we needed any assistance. My girlfriend found a vest that cost almost 300 dollars and was carrying it around as she planned to buy it, which still didn't even remotely peak the interest of the SALES people. We ended up just buying the vest as we didn't have enough time to go through the entire store and weren't being directed in any way that could've helped us narrow down the section faster. A truly terrible experience in an empty store with three people working and chatting away while we quickly walked lost as hell. I've never left a store more pissed off having spent almost 300 dollars in my entire life. I WOULD RECOMMEND going in and trying on stuff and then buying online so that you can do research on the stuff and avoid a complete lack of help from the sales associates here. read more

I ordered several items for my husband from the catalog that didn't fit. We were in the area and stopped in to look around the retail store. What a delightful experience! Gretchen helped us locate several items he liked better than those I had ordered. She facilitated the return of unwanted pieces, located new ones, arranged for one alteration, ordered two items that weren't in the store and did all of this with a smile. We love Orvis products and will make a point of shopping in Houston with Gretchen again! Even my grumpy husband enjoyed the visit!!! read more

Hit or miss customer service. Bad location unless you carry a firearm regularly. Absolutely zero propensity to provide customer service. The attitude is our way or go someplace else. I asked if a certain product was available and they said it was but they hadn't put it out yet....that's it. No offer to let me see, or set them out. I would have to come back another time after they had set the product out. On a separate occasion what I can only assume is the manager was asked by staff about a customer service issue and guidance (one gets the feeling she lords over the store) and she barked that the customer was in the wrong and they had the option "to order" if they wanted an exchange. The trade off for ordering from the store is free shipping but I know what I'm buying and the high prices so I could care less I'd I'm saving $13 on shipping for the purchase of a $500 item. It's a shame this is the only location in the area because it sucks. read more
