They have all kinds of clothing and accessories for outdoor activities like hiking and camping. They also have a lot of Texas souvenirs and books about Texas. And they have a huge selection of toys, new and old nostalgic types. The toy section is the most fun to browse. The employees are nice and help me when I need it. I walked into this store for the first time ever as I was in need of hiking shoes and had no clue what I was doing. I've driven past this place time after time for years and was actually pretty excited that I now had a real reason to head in The staff was not only incredibly friendly, but they were also helpful and knowledgeable! They helped me pick out a great hiking shoe for my upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon and also explained the importance of choosing the right size. Had I just bought a pair online on my own, I would not have known that you should have more room in your hiking shoe than the average shoe because your feet can swell once you get a couple miles in. They even have an incline so you can make sure your toes aren't smashing into the front of the shoe during a descent. Thanks for all y'all's help and kindness towards me today! A great place to find sustainable clothes, shoes and other items. Great sales, too! I'm especially happy with the shoes I've bought there.

Outdoor stores happen to be one of my weak, guilty, nonsensical obsessions. It's kind of like office supply stores, how many pens and folders does one really need in life? How many around-the-world trips will I make that require a pair of quick-dry underwear? And yet, I continue to sneak around these store for hours on end. This location of Whole Earth Provision Co. sits conveniently at Shepherd and W. Alabama. All of the employees are friendly but not "here-are-some-disgustingly-overpriced-hiking-socks-you-don't-need" pushy. For a smaller outdoor store, it's still packed with all sorts of fun and useful accessories, down to the latest Angry Bird plush toys. Admittedly, my favorite section to peruse here is the shoe section. Always season-appropriate, the shoe section has plenty of sale and bargain finds. I come here for all of my Toms needs, as they have a whole wall of the latest styles. Before my month-long trip to South America, I tried on many pairs of hiking boots before skipping out of the store with the pair that would save many lives and ankles (okay maybe just mine) on many hikes to come. The Whole Earth Provision shoe guy was instrumental in helping me choose the perfect pair for the amount of weight I was going to be carrying on my back. And no, after this purchase, I did not miss the painful downhill hiking in my old running Asics. This store also has a good selection of the comfortable shoes that can double as casual or work shoes- Indigo, Ugg, Dansko, etc. And if you happen to be average size (and therefore unable to find your size anywhere), they always graciously ask if you would like them to call another store and check availability of your size. In the middle of any trip here, I always find myself muttering under my breath, asking myself why I can't seem to leave empty-handed. And I always get an understanding, sheepish nod of empathy from an employee standing close by. I'm only docking a point because REI beats them at price, but Whole Earth's location is much more central and convenient. read more

The Tom's slip-on shoes collection here is probably more extensive than anywhere else in town (well two years ago at least, when I was hunting for a specific design for a friend), but a couple of bucks pricier than Whole Foods Tom's prices. Yes, there is a store that has products offered at higher prices than Whole Foods. Whoah. "Whole" paycheck indeed? Okay not really but isn't it uncanny? What am I talking about again? I don't think I've bought much from here, but I always end up wandering around here with someone else who's dead set on a new jacket (okay North Face selection here) or other such outdoorsy gear (pshaw, I like my AC and electricity because I'm a wimp!). However, the staff has mostly seemed eager to assist and answer questions despite my disinterest in the more serious product selections. The available educational games and toys might perhaps appeal to you, and if not that, there's a random sprinkling of gag gifts. Pretty fun place to wander around, and a tad more whimsical than sporting good stores (i.e. Academy). read more

If I was going to go hiking I'd probably come in here and buy a fire starter and caveman stick. This place has what you need to survive in the woods, hopefully it works while your traveling your trail or quest you are on, because if not you are stuck with barrrrrs in the wilderness. Shoes, lots of cool epic shoes that can give you like extra grippage for grinding your cliffs and mountains. Childrens toys to survive in their mothers company as well and a bunch of nic nacs and gadgets and a large selection of elite wild and funny books. My favorite purchase there currently is a large life like rubber toad that is about the size of a volley ball that I enjoy leaving on my friends door steps... We call it the traveling toad and my buddies and I take the frog on our travels and have many photos of it around the world ( I think the frog did London last..) lol.... I came here recently to do some Christmas shopping. There were multiple spots open to park at 6pm on a weekday. I was greeted upon arrival and in every section I went to was greeted by an employee making sure my shopping experience was great! I was even brought a basket by a worker while shopping. Their selection is AMAZING. Clothes, camping gear, YETI, travel books, scarves, soaps and jewelry, kids toys, books, clothes, cards, stationary, journals, wind chimes- lots of unique gifts especially around the holidays! I love this store. Not only does it have the best selection of outdoor and travel brands, but also fun gifts, housewares, games, and other useful stuff. This is a Texas-only retailer with no web store, and they do not match prices so be aware of that. They tend to have a larger selection of items from the same women's brands carried by REI. For example, they have a sizable amount of Lole clothing, Patagonia, Royal Robbins, Prana, the North Face,ex officio, and other similar brands. They also carry Moving Comfort sports bras which are great. I typically stop here whenever I am in town. I did find an amazing jacket once not in my size from Lole, and they sent my size from their San Antonio location to this one so I could try it on! I was very impressed. However, I could get it $30 cheaper on zappos.com and tried to support this great local business and they would not match the price so I bought it online. However, I still am happy to support Whole Earth and its great products when I get the chance. read more

If you have managed to maintain your active outdoorsy life while raising small children, there can be no better store for you. Whole Earth has all the cool things you expect to outfit your next adventure weekend, and you can buy a pair of baby Crocs or baby Timberlands for your little hiker as well. Whole Earth also has a significant toy section covering a wide age range, so you can bring the family and count on those diversions so you can get your own shopping done. Service is ok. You will likely have to look for someone to help you if you need assistance, but once you get someone they will usually be cheerful and attentive. I did have one bad experience where the guy helping me look at shoes kept talking about how bad Crocs are for your feet even though they sell them and I had come into the store wearing a pair. I discreetly rolled my eyes and thought, "You ain't no podiatrist. Just get me these Merrills in size 8 and stop talking." So, he did deter me from buying shoes that day, but I still managed to find other things to buy. It's very easy to find something you like at Whole Earth. read more

I'm going to share a secret with you Yelp but I hope my family isn't reading this because I've been one of the best gift-givers for a while now. Without a doubt this is one of my favorite places for gift shopping, particularly for my nieces and nephews. They sell a ton of awesome classic toys (think old school Fisher Price video camera, turntable, Etch-n-sketch, etc), puppets, science kits, magic kits, craft kits...you get the idea. I have so much fun shopping here for the kiddos and I get a total rush seeing them open up their presents with total excitement and joy. You want to be the best aunt or uncle? Come here. They also sell good travel gear and clothing but you might want to do price comparison online and/or REI for those items. I've purchased a few pairs of shoes here (Birkenstock, Toms, Earth) and their prices are great for those items. read more

After shedding a few tears from the recent closing of the next door Cactus Records location, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Whole Earth had taken over the space and nearly doubled in size. It's the perfect place for anyone who has a love for the outdoors. Even if you don't, it's worth a trip to the shoes, kids, or clothing sections. I can't tell you how many people I've converted to followers of the Whole Earth shoe department. Even though their department is smaller than other retailers, they have the perfect selection - think Clarks, Keen, Merrell, Brooks, Ecco, etc. Whether you want a running shoe, sandal, or something a little wackier (they have shoes that have their own toes!), you'll find what you want there. Also, the sales can't be beat on backpacks and luggage. I've always found everything I need when looking for travel essentials, regardless of whether it's camping or traveling to Europe. read more

I love this place. When I feel inspired to hike Big Bend or Enchanted Rock, this is the place I visit first and think about if I'd really make it out alive. Or if there was a zombie apocalypse. They have shoes, camping gear, rope, packs, clothes, books, and even kids toys. Get Rick, ditch Shane, and pack Carl in the backpack so he can't get out, and you'll be set to find Herschel's farm. But in reality, while I bought my Osprey Aether 70 pack from REI (can't beat the dividend kickback) for a backpacking trip in Spain, I came here several times to try the pack out. The employees never hounded me, only asking me once or twice if I needed fitting help. They have an Osprey IsoForm hipbelt molder on-site, which is perfect if you need to adjust your pack's belt. They're knowledgeable about almost all of their gear and can offer advice according to your destination or goal. They carry Tevas, Toms, and all the other outdoor shoes, and then some. I bought my first Toms from here, may those requiesce in pace. In addition to great travel book selection (with Texas authors!!!), they have a gift section that has that perfect thing for that weird person you know, a huge wind chime collection (wind chimes make me nervous, I blame Twister) and expansive outdoor travel apparel area. Water bottles, smaller packs and whatever you could think of, they probably carry it. I could spend hours here browsing. Parking is a little tighter now thanks to Trader Joe's, but the lot behind the building (enter off Richmond or Kipling) is big. You might walk some, but that's just preparation for the Camino. If you're an outdoor-type, be sure to check this place out. I must say that I was extremely skeptical of this outdoor/travel gear store based on the picture from yelp, but damn am I glad I swung through to peep it. Travel bags, camping bags, hiking shoes, sandals, sleeping bags, clothes, trail food, the list goes on - they even have a section dedicated to kids toys. Kind of random but hey, I'm sure they're making bank from it. Ryan helped me in the shoe section and as an Astros fan, he let me know that he didn't appreciate me sporting my Red Sox hat. Little did he know that I never leave home without it. I rep my city with pride baby - the local 9 especially. I appreciate good banter and we talked baseball for a good few minutes. Good dude. Very helpful and witty. Taylor was more than happy to help me with questions I had about the dehydrated meals they carry as well as sleeping bags and pads. I enjoyed listening to his opinions and insight, and I definitely learned a bit from our conversation. Going on a trip? This store has a bit of every thing you might need. I've been to both stores. The one in the Galleria area and the one in upper Kirby. Both are visually appealing, well laid out, and carry more small sizes than other athletic stores (why is xs so hard to find?) This review is geared toward their employees. Whole Earth seems to spend more time screening their applicants. They are helpful and well traveled. Awesome travellers store. REAL travellers not weekend trip to the Grand Canyon people. Their shoe selection is perfect. I stopped by on my way to Sports Authority on a whim and wanted to see if they would have something good for trecking through the rainforest/riverine/motorscooter-in-a-3rd-world-environment: lightweight, sturdy, good ventilation for drying, good grip for slippery rocks, good grip for climbing and fashionable since I was backpacking and would only also be bringing some flip flops. I found the perfect pair at a great price. then I found a waterproof lightweight camera bag and anti chafe cream. Love this place. Could spend hours looking at the travel books. read more

Jewelry, clothes, workout attire, humorous kitchen utensils, books, camping equipment, toys, shoes, etc. etc. It's perhaps not the cheapest place in the world, but it's a good place for unique, fun gifts. I love gifting the Texas-shaped wooden cutting boards and I like to get my boyfriend funny stuff (like "Beer Monster" to open his beers). I've also gotten Chacos here and I'm about to look for some black flip flops with good arch support before spring arrives. For years I never knew what this place was. The customer service is just fantastic. I've had several good experiences and was even able to exchange my Vibram Five-Finger shoes without a receipt (I did buy them there and had the box). The salesperson was exceptionally knowledgeable and explained to me that Vibram employed a heel strap design on the model of shoe that I had purchased which, well, had a flaw (the design of that component was dropped in subsequent models). I love my VFFs. I've purchased a few items there over the years. While they can't match the prices of REI's "house brand" items, the name brand items seem to be similarly priced. If you're patient/lucky enough to wait for a sale, Whole Earth P.C. can be a bit cheaper than REI (I have a membership, there). Whole Earth P.C. is much smaller than REI and has a different feeling. They have fun little bits of silliness which you don't find at REI. Given that it saves me a schlep outside the loop... and it's a more "local" business, I tend to check Whole Earth, first. It's the perfect one-stop-shop specialty store for all things outdoors and then some! If you love socks and flip flops you won't find a better selection/variety. Cool toys for kids from educational to novelty. I get my son's X-mas stocking stuffers here every year and If I need a quick b-day present for a child ranging in age from 3-10 this is the place. You can get in and out easy and not have to worry about the lines at Target/Toys R Us and are ensured no one else will have a duplicate gift! They have a much better clothing selection then REI for sure. It's always merchandised and organized really well and you can find some great deals on their clearance racks. My only complaint is that staff can be hit or miss. Either they know nothing about anything, or they are outdoor hippie snobs (snippies) who think they are above helping out the novice who wants to entertain the idea of outdoor activities. I have had the pleasure of working with 1-2 people that are neither of the above...their knowledge and genuine demeanor was greatly appreciated. read more

A fantastic outdoor store with a very knowledgeable staff! Truthfully, the atmosphere of the store makes me want to go ahead and just throw up a tent in the parking lot with quick runs to neighboring Trader Joe's as my food supply runs out (I've thought this more than once). There's a huge section of toys for kids that highlight a lot of cool brands (and most aren't outdoor related) like Goldie Blocks and Melissa&Doug. For actual camping/outdoors equipment, I often find better prices at REI. However, I do love the staff and the great array of options that I still stop by Whole Earth Provision when I can-- even if just to look around. (Also the nearest REI is west of the Galleria). My husband and I love this place. From running gear to outdoor gear, they have it all. Recently, I was out of my element and had to return a pair of running shoes for the first time after a few runs. At time of purchase, we were told if they didn't work we could return them within 30 days. After a long run at Memorial, I was left with quite a few blisters. Before this run, a couple other runs prior I felt hot spots but I didn't think it was the shoes until after that long run. I was then convinced. Management were willing to still assist me with my store credit despite the wear on my shoes from my long run. They didn't have to due to the questionable condition (a little wear on the sole) of the shoe but they did. I then exchanged them for another shoe that I was going to get the time I bought the others but didn't get. All-in-all, satisfied customer. Highly recommend. If not for the terrible connotations, I would call this place an adult toy store. Seriously. OK, yeah, they sell camping stuff, but where else can I buy my sister a "Danger: Police Line. Do not cross" scarf for Christmas, bacon band-aids for my boyfriend, and find $10 shoes? Yes, the shoe sale is THAT amazing. I'm there without fail. I don't always find what I want, but it's always worth the look. I've gotten some stellar deals that way. So aside from shoes and quirky knick-knackery, what does the store my family and I affectionately call "The Dirty Hippie Store" sell? Camping gear, quirky books, clothes that are suited to this insane climate of ours... Name it. Something is there. The kid's toy section is awesome, too. Marshmallow gun, anyone? Educational and non-educational toys abound. And for those of you who, like me, are a little upset that today's kids will never get splinters from their toys, Whole Earth has WOODEN TOYS. Yeah, wood! Amazing in this plexiglass and plastic day and age, no? I would have to say that if you need a new back pack (hello? back to school anyone?), new shoes, a fun gift for someone, or you wanna go camping, this is a destination. Whole Earth Provision Co is my go to store when it comes to purchasing technical gear for anything adventurous. They have probably the largest The North Face collection that's actually desirable in Houston. REI's selection just doesn't seem to cut it. Whole Earth also has plenty of Marmot and Patagonia gear too if that's your brand of choice. The staff there are friendly and know a lot about the products that they are selling which is always helpful when you know you want a specific item to do a certain job, but you aren't sure which one you should buy. They also have great accessories for your water bottles! I bought a spout for my widemouthed Nalgene so that you can drink it without it splashing your face - go to the water bottle section and you'll know what I'm talking about. Whole Earth also has a pretty good selection of Timbuk2 bags, TNF bags, Camelbak, etc. One final thing that is AWESOME is that they have rotation sales that seem to vary every week. So you can save 25% on an entire brand that happens to be on sale! read more
