The help in the backpack area is spotty. By that I mean is they get pulled in multiple directions and at times their answers to my questions just don't make sense. Only one person I met in there seemed to have climbing 14k experience. The female manager in the men's clothing was a ton of help though. Helped me figure out my layering for my 1st 14k attempt. The temps are near freezing at that level and after a tough climb, H2O management, and conditioning you want to have your clothing exposure correct. The other gal was clueless and needs more training. This is a sports store not TJ Max. Know your brands. Didn't speak to anyone in the bike department. I came here to purchase climbing shoes and was wowed by the service here! It is my first time purchasing climbing shoes so I felt a bit anxious but the employee helping me was very informative. I was able to try on a returned pair of shoes that had been broken in and that helped me decide on the perfect pair for me. I am very happy with the climbing shoe purchase and felt that the selection was good and appreciated the opportunity to even try on a few shoes that had been broken in already. REI even has a small boulder to test out the climbing shoes on which was very helpful for me to assess my toe box. I also love REIs selection of other climbing gear and chalk so I will be back to resupply my chalk and look at other necessary accessories for climbing! I was looking for a roof rack cargo carrier mounting system - her many years of experience with REI clearly came out, and in no time she was able to identify all the different parts and components that I needed for my vehicle, get them to me at the counter, and convince me of the benefits of a membership. Kelley was extremely professional and I was in & out in no time. I don't recall the last time I spent that much money (almost $900) in such a frictionless purchase process. Normally I don't mind if there's no employees to help me. Today they are currently having one of their bigger sales. I went this past weekend and the ling was half way to the back of the store so I decided to order a pick up and come back on a weekday. I still had to get in line. Then the cashier said the online order doesn't exist, then she told me it's canceled. Unknown reason cause I never got cancel. Still pending. I asked it's only 2 items can I just get it and come back to her, she told me NO I had to get back in line cause ppl in line would be mad and look at her. I was like uhh...k?? Fortunately, after 1 min I grabbed my item a fortunately there wasn't a long wait. I informed her it's a bit unfair imo. She didn't care. What if I was old? With a disability? I love coming here to shop for my hiking gear and outfit. I have a membership, and when I buy things from here, my items are uploaded into my membership account. If I lose my receipt, I have a copy of my purchases online. They have sale areas or second-hand items you can buy cheaper than their new price. The staff are helpful, and there are always new things to find at this location. I love coming to REI for all my outdoor gear and needs. Recently, I was here to shop for outdoor gear and outfits for my Iceland trip. I mainly bought base layers, hiking overalls, and winter jackets. I will never come to this location again. I came in to get my back tire inner tube changed . The service was very fast and they "appeared" to be friendly however, when I took my bike back out the car, the chain made a clicking sound as I was rolling the bike and then it came loose I called them immediately LITERALLY like 6 mins after spoke with a woman on the phone. I think her name was Julie, who told me that the tire change had nothing to do with the chain and I had to pay for another service, which is insane because it was the back tire and you had to remove the chain to remove the back tire and it was not installed correctly. There was no issue with the chain before the bike was taken in for service. Obviously they don't standby their services. I will be disputing the charges and I will never come back again. FOR ONLINE Order. I am a REI FAN and, have been an REI member since 2012; an REI shopper since 2011. Ordered 6 things on my most recent order - on their website. One item a 60 dollar pillow, came in a tattered, dirty, crumbled, and ink leaked plastic-bag packaging with no REI branding. The other item a water bottle purifier came with a clipped tag (the plastic part that holds the product to the manufacture cardboard, so I'm unsure if a part is missing or if the bottle had been used. And the sleeping bag was three times the size as photographed (and scaled next to a 32ounce waterbottle in the online age). I did online chat with customer service and they said I could return for a fee. Why not waive the fee for member who at no fault, received the wrong or tampered goods? read more

I am big fan of REÍ or at least until now. I came here with my miniature poodle to buy a winter jacket and we were stopped at the entrance as our little one is not a service dog. We asked if we could hold him while shopping and finally the guy at the entrance accepted. Later inside the store we were stopped multiple times by employees asking the same question even while holding up our dog in the arms. We were uncomfortable and we left. Good thing is Whole Earth Provisions was not too far away and they were happy with our dog in the store, no questions asked. read more

Every time I enter their doors a feeling of peace washes over me. Steve (older gentleman on the floor staff) was called to help me by the cashier (I don't recall his name). Both provided exceptional customer service. I went in with an REI backpack that my kid broke. The backpack was out of warranty, but the front desk called upon Steve to see if he could provide his magic touch. Steve looked it over and fixed it! (the strap locking mechanism was stuck). This REI store is really a disappointing mixed bag compared to their stores in other cities that are constantly trying to impress, especially if you are a """"""valued""""""" member of the co-op like me. I had to upgrade all of my mountain casual, desert semi-serious, and hiking gear for my last trip into the wilderness so what I could not do online I tried to do here, and they were pretty much 0 for 3. I got no help when I came in the first time so I just walked my ass all over the store for fitbit steps and not finding anything I actually wanted, just left and went back to Whole Earth on Shepherd to get what I knew they had, giving up the REI dividend since it did not appear to be in stock here and there was no help to run into the back and check. Next time I came back I had checked online stock and the internets told me that this location (rather than one in Clear Lake I would rather visit if it wasn't an hour away each way) had my stuff in stock. Jolly well, finally get dem sweet sweet REI dividends. Show up here and the items are not out on the floor. I walk all over the store for some more fitbit steps and then finally flag a guy down - he looks like he is literally hiding from customers like a bridge troll but I made him pay the troll toll. He looks up inventory and just says, as lazily as possible, internet was wrong on stock status. I had checked it not five minutes earlier out in the parking lot. I again went to Whole Earth Provisions, paid $5 more for it, gave up REI dividends, but actually walked out of a store with it that day rather than paying shipping and waiting for things to get shipped. Last time I was in here was to return a defective product I had bought on the webpage, so again I was giving up dividends to return this defective product I actually really wanted but it was defective and I learned it was defective in Be'er Sheva around the time a Gazan rocket was landing nearby so that is probably one of the worst times and places you can learn your shoes are made half of garbage, and half of marketing/advertising bullshit that are filthy fucking lies. I'm not a hiker, biker, or kayaker, but I do like the wide variety of high quality items to choose from when I need outdoorsy / active life stuff. I went in here looking for a shirt for my husband to wear while swimming and doing other water activities. We should have come in earlier in the summer as most of the quick dry SPF shirts were picked over. We were still able to find one in his size and long sleeve. The store is large and roomy. There is a ton to look at including tents, camping equipment, clothes, backpacks and other bags, and a variety of other camping and helpful active life accessories. After we found our water shirt, we looked around the rest of the store. Maybe we shouldn't have because we didn't get out of their cheaply. We bought some camelbak bottles (get some and stop using disposable one time use bottles). I also eyed a cute bag as I came in. I love bags. I found that this was the last one of its kind in the store, so I took it off the mannequin. There were a couple of blemishes on the bag (nothing that wasn't cleaned off since) and they gave me a 10% discount because of it. A little disappointed in this locations customer service. I was there for a good half hour and not once did anyone on the floor asked if I needed help looking for anything. I was in fact, searching for a good raincoat for my husband, but wanted to search more in the clearance aisle. My husband requested that we not break the bank for just a raincoat. Eventually a lady who had past me about 4-5 times asked if I was doing okay. I asked if there was a clearance section for raincoats. She was a little rude assuming I was looking for myself, and pointed that the women's section was elsewhere. I was irritated at that point as I mentioned it was for my husband. I eventually found something on my own and checked out. I hope to see better improvement with customer service at this location. I didn't think it was fair to assume I was looking for a women's coat, nor saw me struggling for a good half hour before asking if I was doing "okay". read more

So I asked again, they say yes we have it and it's like an "arctic white". I say great, I get to the store and they show me the "arctic white" shoe, it's grey.. not even light grey, almost a dark grey. Then they have the nerve to try to sell me a membership. *CAUTION: This is only a review for the REI GARAGE SALE* Now that you have been forewarned, I came to REI for their garage sale with my buddy. He's all big into the garage sales, and so he said we'd need to get there at 6:30AM. He thought we'd make it to the point in line right near PetCo. Incorrect. This was the first garage sale REI had in a long time, and we were around the corner of the building on our way to Shipley's. People had camped out all night to go here (with their REI tents and sleeping bags that they presumably got at the previous REI garage sales.) It was a pretty efficiently run little deal. The folks from REI made sure to walk outside to tell everyone that they'd need to have their membership card to get in and would be limited to six items per turn per membership; the doors would open at 9. What? We needed a membership? Where was this info, buddy ol' pal? Once I got inside, there was plenty of time to get a membership for $20. It took another hour for us to get into the actual garage sale. (This was held in their stock room in the back, and they could only let so many people in safely at a time.) Stuff was in all kinds of conditions with brokenness and returns. (They really do accept anything in any condition if you are unhappy -- an outdoorsy Nordstrom.) Things sold here were on final sale. I found some cool buys -- mostly clothing. All the cool gear (worthwhile tents, sleeping bags, folding chairs, canoes, bicycles, climbing gear) probably walked out the door with the folks who had camped overnight to get them. I still managed to drop nearly $150. Was it worth it? Yes. If you're serious about going to get gear, camp overnight. read more

Tagged along to the Memorial Day weekend sale with a friend who was looking for gear for an upcoming backpacking trip. She was struggling to pick out a backpack that would be worth the investment for future trips and also fit her well since she is short. Dario approached us and was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the pros and cons of different options and pointing her to the one he most recommended based on her size and how she envisioned using her gear. He also guided her through selecting a sleeping bag and camping pad to round out what she needed for her trip, even showing her how to load up her bag with these new items. The employees at this REI are super friendly and helpful. If you're an outdoors fanatic, REI is essentially the cream of the crop (I haven't been to Cabela's yet so take that with a grain of salt.) There is SO much at this store. It's slightly overwhelming but who doesn't want options when they're making purchases for their outdoor activities? This REI location is the bomb! This is my first time shopping at REI for my first pair of hiking boots. I was super lost and one of the employees, Carl, asked if he could help me! Their customer service is SUPERB!!! He provided detailed knowledge of the various hiking boots and asked me a lot of questions to make sure we find the right fit for me (which terrain I was going to be hiking on, what feet problems have I had, etc.). He also gave recommendations on which boots I should take a look at that is most appropriate for the rocky / wet terrain that I will be hiking on -- so grateful for this as I have no idea what to expect! He measured my feet (length and width) and gave great recommendations on hiking wool socks. Afterwards, he let me have a pair of wool socks to try on with the shoes. He brought out various brands of shoes over different price points and emphasized that this was just to find the right fit. I ended up settling on this PERFECT PAIR!!! He also went over the best way to tie the shoe strings to ensure best conformity of the shoes. He even went so far as to take out the inner soles to see if it was actually the best size for me (slightly larger by half a thumbnail size). CARL IS GREAT, GUYS!! I'm sure the other employees there are fantastic and knowledgeable as well! I'm just impressed that he spent nearly 2.5 hours on me and was very patient and thorough in answering all of my noob questions! I'm so appreciative of REI, especially their employees!!! There were even some boulders / rocks set up in an incline shape that you can practice on to test your hiking shoes' grip or fit. Their clearance prices on their boots were very competitive too! I had a fantastic experience here and can't wait to come back! Update -- Visited REI again for a new hiking backpack (I'm too extra) and Robert helped me out!!! He was SO informative and spent about 2 hours sizing my backpack for me (that's right -- I didn't know one even has to find a right fit for a backpack). He even placed weights in my backpack and had me walk around the store to make sure the backpack was comfortable. I am very grateful for the knowledgeable and dedicated employees at REI!!
