We've all had "typical" Chinese food, right? It's usually pretty predictable, and once in a while, you actually get a "good" Chinese joint. "Oriental Buffet" is NOT a good one. Oh good lord, is it not good at all. While on a road trip, I stayed at the hotel across the street, and walked to the restaurant. Typical high-quality, low-quality buffet setup. It was filled with locals....which makes me question what they put in the water in Arcata, CA to make people RETURN to this place. The prices were VERY cheap ($5.00 for a combo: meat/choice of rice, etc) so I ordered the General Tso's Chicken/white rice, and the Sweet & Sour Chicken/fried rice, as well as a small order of chow mein. The General Tso's was brown, and shiny. It tasted like absolutely nothing. It had the general texture of chicken, without any specific flavor whatsoever. A generous dousing of soy sauce did nothing to "enhance the flavor". The Sweet & Sour Chicken was truly impressive in it's absence of flavor. As you can see in the photos I've posted, it was battered and fried, with absolutely no seasoning, and presented as such. Included with the dish is a single-serving packet of "sweet & sour sauce" for you to basically finish the chefs job. It was inedible. I'm not a picky eater; I don't mind bland food. But this chicken is simultaneously rubbery AND crumbly. Completely and totally disgusting. The color wasn't even palatable. If you enjoy buying what is being presented as edible food for about a dollar a pound, than this is the place for you! Bonus: There are PLENTY of homeless people hovering in and around the restaurant. If you somehow haven't heeded my warning, and decide to eat this "food", you can opt to give them your generous portions of leftovers, rather than throwing it in the trash. Even better, skip this disgusting "restaurant" entirely, and give the homeless people outside a few bucks instead. They can probably give you a better recommendation on where to eat. read more

I used to come here a lot to where I used to be a regular. I stopped coming here because of the way they treated my friends and I. First off, they don't even smile, not even to regulars. And secondly, I came here last time and they brought the check to us after 10 minutes... It does NOT take 10 minutes to get full, so I think only care about money and not the satisfaction of customers... I found that VERY disrespectful... I always pay after I eat, so why the rush with the check??? Likely something from the tasty shellfish I ate here - oysters, clams, crab legs, mussels - one of the best seafood selections I've come across in a small-town Chinese buffet. Okay, to be clear, this place sucked. I have never had such low quality, bland Chinese food in all my life but I also come from SoCal so I might be spoiled. The place had a lot of standard americanized fare like crab rangoons, chow mein, meats. But why dear god why do the meat dishes contain sugar too? And why do you need to bread and deep fry a chicken and vegetable dish? And the cooks here seem to ignore seasoning because most of the foods lacked flavor or spice. Food was pretty bad. Some vegetable dishes (green beans) were acceptable but really greasy. Nothing seemed particularly fresh, and the "cold" food seemed like it had been out way too long. Many unusual and not food related odors. Screaming babies, but that seems par for such a place. The parking lot was full of garbage and didn't feel as safe as most places in Arcata. Groups of 10 or more are charged a 15% gratuity although there is almost no service (plates are randomly and infrequently cleared, drinks are not refilled, etc). It's been a long time since I've been to an actual buffet, so the friend I was with just shook his head when I asked him "So, can I go and get another plate? How does this work? Do I just leave the plate I finished here at the table?" You go in, stake out a table, load up a plate, wolf it down, and repeat until stuffed, all for about $12 (dinner) or $8 (lunch), so if you come here, plan on trying to eat enough for it to be worth your money. The Food The main strength of this place in my opinion is the sheer variety of food to choose from. There is the normal Chinese restaurant fare such as appetizers (potstickers, egg rolls etc.), soups (wonton, hot and sour, egg drop), and various forms of chicken, pork, and fish. There are also some other types of seafood such as crab legs, mussels, whole fried shrimp, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of very basic dimsum items like shaomai (sp) and steamed buns. Also featured are Mongolian BBQ, sushi, a salad bar, and a dessert bar. Yes, the quality of the food is fair to middling at best. There is a lot of grease, and if you're used to eating really healthy, your digestive tract may wish to make some lengthy commentary on your decision to eat here for quite a while after you've left. Even sticking to veggies doesn't really help as just about every vegetable is stir-fried and glistening with oil. I find that it's worth it every once in a long while. To me, a lot of the food is somewhat bland, which I expect and don't mind as there are many sauces to choose from. It's cheap Chinese food. To me it makes as much sense to complain about that as it would to complain that fish and chips are bland. What do you expect? It's fried fish and potatoes! Anyway, tangential mini-rant aside, I'm pretty much satisfied so long as I've got plenty of garlic chili sauce and ponzu. The Joint Not much can be said. The place is spacious but unremarkable. Plenty of booth seating. It's located in a nondescript strip mall next to a Ray's grocery. The Service They'll fill your drink once or twice maybe. My friend generally stayed seated whenever I was getting food, so it gave me the idea that the waiters may be prone to swooping in to bus and seat new guests at any tables that are left unattended for a moment. None of them were particularly friendly, but there were no significant negative issues. Overall Not the best quality of food, but again the sheer variety and the fact that it's AYCE work in its favor. The service is cursory, but not enough to deter me from coming back. The best deal for this place is lunch! The food here is pretty damn good. The lunch price is $7.50 and its a buffet. The selection is great, the food comes out fresh on a consistent basis, there is always someone monitoring the buffet and keeping it tidy and clean. Only bummers I have to share: In the past the waiters have behaved like hawks, waiting and watching over your shoulder for the tip or ticket, its pretty annoying. Its gotten a lot better though. Also, their frozen yogurt machine. Its been BROKEN for MONTHS! They only have vanilla, no chocolate or chocolate/vanilla mix. Months, broken? Come on. The water display with the fish and structures outside of the buffet is horrible. The water is not sufficient, there is a sign that says don't put coins in the water but there are tons anyway, no vegetation for the fish; a crappy environment for them, and it bothers me. This place was good. The food was fresh so I appreciated that. The sushi is made fresh so I appreciated that and so did the boys! My boys LOVE sushi so that was a big plus. I'm giving this place a five star because it's stellar for what it is. One dinner costs about $10 and around lunch time it's $7.50. Don't expect the best oriental food you've ever had, because it's a buffet. And for buffet food, it's AWESOME. They have a decent variety of foods, but my favorites are the sushi, garlic bok choy, peanut chicken, and mushroom pork. This was one of my go-to places for lunch during my short stay in Humboldt county. I stuck to veggie items and never got sick, like some of the other reviewers said. I would always go for some cream cheese wontons and sweet and sour sauce, hit up the fresh salad and fruit bar, and I'd get some soup (they have miso, egg drop, hot and sour) or noodles (chow mein or lo-mein style). For dessert I always picked up a round bean-curd ball or a donut and some soft serve. Mongolian bbq is not authentic. Regardless it's still very good. The food selection is fantastic, the tastes are awesome. My biggest complaint would be temperature of food. Needs to be hotter. The price is fair, and the food is good, but it's not a safe environment for children. Last night I went in with my family and children. Upon entering immediately one of the wait staff was rubbing her hands all over my 8 month old daughter. This then escalated to her toys being handled by wait staff. I was put in an awkward position of having to say, "Please don't touch my daughter". Not fun. Between 2015-to current I have been in multiple times with my children and had the same awful experience with the employees. We ate here for the first time Saturday afternoon after reading mostly good reviews. Yes, it's a buffet, but for a buffet the food is surprisingly good. There is a wide variety of food, not just Chinese - hence the name "Oriental." I was thrilled to find some dim sum when I opened the lid on what I thought was a soup pot. There is truly something for everyone - sushi, chop suey, Mongolian, teriyaki, a salad bar, even dessert. We were shown to a table and our drinks were brought to us. Our cups were checked frequently for refills. All the wait staff were friendly and helpful. One even carried my plate back to my table for me (I use a wheelchair). The price was very reasonable. Oriental Buffet is a pretty good Chinese buffet. I've been several times now, and I have enjoyed each time. The lunch and dinner buffets might differ on what is offered (ex: rice noodles only served during lunch). Service is pretty good.
