Please, let me preface this phenomenal review with a couple of statements that will be an attestation of how great of a stylist Ms. Kalea Renee is. First: Prior to my even caring, in the slightest, about a professional haircut, I had heard of Kalea through a few girls I know - "OK, sure, yer hair looks great, but I'm a shaggy dude." Upon hearing all this jazz, I was happy to hear of a local business that had a great stylist of which i could refer to any ladyfriends that needed a new 'doo'. But, personally, I could care less about a professional cut. Now comes the kicker: I have been cutting my own hair with pleasure and great success for a few years now. BUT, last week I am giving myself a routine trim, and make a most egregious error. To say the least, i look like an ass. Not knowing how to correct this bungle, I instantly remember Kalea. So, sure, I'm nervous. I've never had a salon styling, and haven't even been out of my bathroom for a cut in several years. But I give the whole thing a chance, and let me just say that the only person I will let cut my hair ever again; besides myself, of course; is Kalea Renee Wright. Not only did she listen to my totally vague and arbitrary ideas of what I wanted with my hair, but she did it: PITCH PERFECT. This all goes to show how talented this lady is. Women's cuts: that's her bag. Men's cuts: she can oblige even the most difficult customers (namely: me). I went to Orange salon with about 4-5 inches of roots, I desperately needed a change! I have always loved bright colors so I of course asked for something bright and colorful. Aneysa was AMAZING! She took my hair from drab, grow out, and gross to bright and beautiful! I have had COUNTLESS people compliment my hair since then, and have given out her salon/name so much I couldn't tell you. My hair wasn't over bleached or damaged afterwords it still feels great and soft! OK friends, Heather Barclay is in business on her own! I just went to visit her today (haircut is perfect, as always) and the new place is beautiful! I loved hearing about the fantastic plans for the future of the salon too! I can't wait to see the vegetable/herb garden that is in the works in the back - as a formally trained chef, food gardening is very close to Heather's heart. And now, an edited repost of my review from Fringe. . . I have sent many a friend to Heather Barclay, knowing full well that she will deliver a fantastic haircut every time. I have one friend that claims that Heather is the only stylist to ever be able to tame her bangs! (I do adore the way Heather cuts my bangs. . . ) I have been going to Heather since I moved to Austin, 5 years ago and have followed her from Hairy Situations, to Fringe Salon and now to her new baby Orange Salon (if you know Heather, you know how appropriate the name is). I am always amazed at her dedication to her trade and the passion she has to deliver the perfect cut. I have never had a stylist so in tune with delivering exactly what the client wants - she asks plenty of questions and has an 'interactive' portion of the hair cutting so that you never leave disappointed. I originally wrote this review for Heather when she was at a different salon. I've followed her since then and now she has her own place! Not only is everything below regarding Heather still valid, her new salon is just incredible. Great atmosphere, cool people, awesome location, and more. So I'm a dude which means it's standard practice to try out those $10-15 quick haircut places and never really be satisfied. I would have to go in every 3 weeks because 1) my hair grows like a weed and 2) they never did that good of a job...and I tried a bunch of different places (I won't name drop here...that wouldn't be nice). Enter Heather. My wife first went to her because of all of her co-workers' recommendations and my first reaction when she got home was, "HOT!" Mind you, my wife is hot no matter what, but Heather really did an amazing job. I finally gave in and decided to spend a bit more than usual and see how it would work out. Boy am I glad I did! Heather is amazing - I just sit down and tell her to do whatever she wants and I feel like a rock star when I leave. I'll be using her as long as we're in the same city. In fact, I still use her even though I moved north for my job...it's well worth the 20 minute drive...and well worth the money! read more

I've been shying away from getting my curly hair cut anywhere because I've had either unremarkable or horrifying cuts in the past. So on a weekend trip to Austin, I decided to finally get it done. I picked Orange based on their great reviews and because I'd seen the salon on previous trips, (that orange jeep is pretty hard to miss). I'm so glad they made me my appointment so last minute. I got to have my haircut by Jordan whom spent more time on my hair than anyone ever has! He spent a lot of that time just going through every curl carefully snipping. He asked me to tell him about what I do with my hair, what I wanted (I really appreciate that he took everything I said Into careful consideration) and more than delivered. I was and still am so happy with my new haircut. Safe to say I'm ecstatic! I even had people complimenting my second day hair that I literally did nothing to when I woke up the day after my cut. If you are a person who considers their curls to be worth their weight in gold, you need to entrust your curls to a salon that considers them that precious too. I had no idea this was known to be a curly hair expert salon. I was looking online to find someone, ANYONE, who had any experience at all cutting curly hair. I've tried many salons in south Austin and at all of them my curls were wet and stretched out before they were cut..and when it came to styling, my hair was covered in hair spray and scrunched like an 80's rocker. Not at Orange Salon!!! First of all as soon as you walk in you'll notice nearly every client there has curly hair! That's how you know you're in the right place. Elisio Vega as my stylist. A cute, sweet, young man who really took his time giving me step by step instructions on how to wash, dry, and style my hair (using deva curl products -but he didn't push them on me). Elisio really took his time with my hair and meticulously cut individual curls to ensure I ended up with the shape I was looking for. I went from waist length hair to above the shoulder. I always slightly regret cutting my long hair whenever I get a cut, but not this time. I love my short hair even more! I'll definitely be back. Elisio is the only one allowed to cut these curls!!! read more

CURLY GIRLS BEWARE Please DO NOT go here for a Deva Cut. I went and got my hair cut by Heather Barclay. I had long curly hair to the middle of my back. I wanted it a lot shorter, but left with a short frizzy mess. The picture I brought in was a couple inches past the shoulders with shorter layers in the front. I left with my hair well above my shoulders. Not to mention it was completely uneven in the length. One side was noticeably shorter the the other. When I got in the shower to wash it I felt pieces that were almost 3 inches longer than the rest, hanging down in the back. My hair looked like a big uneven triangle. It had a ton of weird layers that didn't blend at all. I spent most of the weekend crying over this horrible haircut. I am pretty easy going about my hair and have never cried over my hair before. I had to call salons all over Austin to try to get someone to fix it. Thank goodness I found a great stylist who could fix it. The only good thing I have to say, was that Heather did give me my $ back. read more

I would HIGHLY reccomend Ruben at Orange Salon to anyone looking to for great color and/or cut! He did an amazing job bringing me to the color blonde I was looking for- I showed him a few pictures of the looks I like and the end result was spot on! He took the time to really talk with me to find out exactly what I wanted and then explain what he was going to do to get me there. He also gave me a fantastic cut and blow out, talking me through what he was doing so I could replicate the style on my own. Not only did I leave the salon the happiest I've been with my hair in years, I also had an extremely positive experience in the process. Ruben is the best- friendly and super easy to talk to, professional and passionate about what he does, and just an overall plesant person. I was his last appointment of the day and he by no means rushed or made me feel bad for keeping him there late. If you have curly hair then you need to see Heather Barclay at Orange Salon. As an Austin native, I have been to my fair share of stylists in this city over the years and none have seemed to know quite what to do with my very fine, curly, and often-frizzy hair. When I came in for my appointment with Heather today, she sat down with me and really took the time to understand how I wanted my hair to look, how I normally styled it, and what would be a realistic morning routine for me (which is pretty much wash, add gel and go). I've been using Diva Curl products for a few years but needed a little more direction on how to use the styling products, which I got. Besides my curly hair cut, she also gave me a conditioning treatment and I left the salon with a head of bouncy, shiny curls. I live in Dallas and travel to Austin for work. A year ago, I was in Austin for a couple of days and asked the concierge if there was a good salon to go to for a blow out. This is how I found Orange Salon. I don't get my hair done in Dallas anymore. I sometimes fly specifically to Austin to get my hair done. The reason is my hair is naturally a dirty ash blonde - blah! Part of my heritage is Irish and very few colorist are able to bring out a beautiful blonde without also bringing out a red tinge to it. Heather is a Goddess when it comes to blonde hair! I feel like a sexy mama with my gorgeous blonde hair when I walk out of there (of course, this is all just in my head) In addition to this, the people that work there are AWESOME!! There is such a great laid back vibe that it completely allows you to leave the crazy world at the door and let loose and have fun while someone is making you beautiful! It's been a LONG time since I've gone to a salon. I've had one too many awful haircuts that I paid too much for, so I've been getting a trusted friend to cut my hair the past few years. But let me just say, a cut with Heather is worth the money. My hair is naturally curly, but I straighten it like 25% of the time, so I got a "regular" women's cut. This was no ordinary cut! Heather spent time with me beforehand going over exactly what I wanted, and talked me through how the whole process would go. I knew I wanted a bob of sorts, but she helped guide me to the perfect style. Her whole approach felt very interactive - throughout the cut she continued to check in to make sure I was loving the direction, and I ended up with one of the best cuts I've EVER had. I'm looking forward to going back to do a DevaCurl styling session so she can teach me some techniques to go natural when I'm not feeling like picking up the flat iron. read more

My coworker Joanna recommended this place to me, she had stated her beautician was amazing and always gave her exactly what she wanted. Needless to say I was nerves since my hair had been butcher before, I rock a uneven pixie and I love short hair been rocking it for about one year and half, after meeting my stylist she seem to know what I wanted, but instead she cut must of my already short hair give me something that I did not want and I feel like I was over charge $160.00 without tip don't get me wrong I am a firm believer that when it comes to hair you get what you pay for, Unfortunally im not happy with the end result. then she was very pushy about getting a tip and was talking bad about another client that didn't give her a tip and how upset she was. I've been trusting my hair to Heather for almost three years now. And that's even after a couple moves to other cities 1200-2000 miles away! Heather helped me transition from a pixie cut to the fun asymmetrical style I sport now. I love the edginess and the precision Heather brings whenever I sit in her chair. I heard about Orange Salon from a friend and was recommended to see hair stylist Kalea Wright. I was a guy with somewhat curly hair down to my chest and I hadn't cut it in a good while but I knew it was about time to get a trim and some styling done. She gave me more knowledge on my hair and how to take care of it than any stylist I have ever had before. This combined with an amazing hair cut (down to about shoulder length) secured her as my permanent hair stylist in Austin. I'm sorry but I'm never going to Bird's Barber Shop again. She is Deva product certified so she knows exactly what to do you with your curls and works with you to get the look you want. I highly recommend her and Orange Salon as your go to salon. read more

I have gone to many different hairdressers since being in Austin and have never had been super happy with the job done. I went to Orange Salon last week and had Heather Huffman do my hair and she was amazing and very lovely. My hair turned out amazing! She obviously knew what she was doing and had a lot of experience because she had made suggestions that turned out to make my hair turn out more fabulous than expected. I had a full set of foils done and was very impressed by Heather's quick and professional work. I trusted her as soon as I met her from her confidence and charming nature. OK - No one could ever get get my hair that pretty blonde color and not that awful orange color... UNTIL I had my hair done by Mindy Street!! She is AMAZING!!! By FAR the best hair stylist that I have ever been too!! I have done EVERYTHING to my hair, and she always gets it right!! Her coloring skills are awesome.. I am not the only one who feels this way!! She was amazing with everyone else I know!! She is magic!! haha.. She is not only very talented, but also so funny, nice, and easy to talk too! Bobby is the first and only stylist to style my hair curly. Before him, I always flat-ironed my wavy hair, which was so time-consuming and not long-lasting in the humid Texas weather. Bobby nailed a pretty, low-maintenance style, and I haven't gone back to straight hair in years! He's a certified Deva Curl specialist, and he takes the time to explain how to use the products to get the best curl out of your hair. Mindy Street at Orange Salon is the absolute best! I have known Mindy for 7 years and she is a complete joy! Mindy has done my color, cut my hair and more recently gave me tattooed eyeliner and I cannot say enough good things about her. I am very indecisive when it comes to changing my hair color/cut, but do so quite often. Mindy is so sweet and trendy and always has good ideas for a change-up! Never have I left disappointed.
