I explained my problems and she said you are our demographic. As as a biracial woman with thick curls, I'd never heard that before, and I knew I was in good hands. We decided on a style and she got to work. I watched as my curl pattern revealed itself through the devacut form. It was truly magical. Finding a new stylist when you move to a new area is always nerve-racking and a dice roll and I'm so glad my dice landed on Eliseo. He is the absolute best! 1,000,000/10 recommend you book your services with him ASAP (but leave enough room on his calendar for me because I will be back lol). Not that he's not already pretty booked and busy to begin with (which--we love to see it!) for obviously good reason. I saw Eliseo on 12/16 and this haircut is, without any doubt, one of the best I have ever had. I have been to many curly hair experts over the years and so far he's the best. If he did this well with my first cut, I am really looking forward to actually having great hair! My hair is like a cross between some loose curls, tight curls, and ramen noodles. A good cut for me is critical with such unruly hair. Ive had several hairdressers move away from Austin so I've had a difficult time this past 18 months. I did have to wait a while for the appointment (about two months) but to me that was a major hint that this will be worth the wait. And it was. He took the time to show me why my current cut was causing challenges and how we would fix that. He also took a more conservative approach as he wasn't as familiar with my hair and how much it would shrink , because when weight is removed that's what curls do. He educated me on how to best wash and style hair and products (they use a great, bespoke type brand from a small business in their salon), My hair looks GREAT. He didn't go crazy styling it and really made sure I know what to do with it going forward. He guarantees his work and I don't ever see him being the type to dismiss you. Very nice guy. I recommend making an appointment far in advance of when you need a cut and go ahead and make one right after. I see why he's so popular! Thanks Eliseo! I love this place! I have absolutely found my new salon. I moved to Austin from NYC a little over a year ago, and so began the process of finding a trusty stylist. I heard about Tara at Orange through a friend, and so when I decided out of nowhere I wanted blue hair, I booked an appointment with her. She listened to what I had in mind and gently educated me on the limitations of my hair, and we came up with a plan that worked best. I couldn't have been happier with the result. More recently, she bleached my hair platinum silver, almost a "steel blonde" that I am obsessed with and have received so many compliments on. She has provided me with maintenance suggestions as well for keeping it bright and healthy, too. I even let her cut six inches off my hair, that's how much I trust her ;-) While I have straight hair I hear Orange is great for curly cuts, but I can attest that for color wizardry, Tara is your girl. I have been searching for someone who could help me achieve a beautiful, natural looking silver hair. Heather saved my hair! Choose 10+ years of curly hair experience over influencers, and "stop trying to web md your hair." I have very fine, 3c curly hair and a diamond face shape - in other words, I've had many terrible haircuts in my life, and most conventional curly hair care doesn't work with my hair. Heather taught me so much about caring for my particular curly hair type; I was using a light-defining gel when I needed a heavy gel. I learned how to wash my hair, apply the gel, and clip my roots. Additionally, in the process of working with my hair, she was able to identify that I had hard-water buildup in my hair causing it to "web up" and tangle. Only an expert would be able to tell that based on my hair's "chalky" texture. After getting a Malibu treatment to remove this hard-water mineral buildup, my hair had never looked better or been easier to care for. She cut each individual curl, and she did not push me to cut off more hair than I wanted to. I can't recommend Heather enough! read more

I went here on the recommendation of a fellow curly-haired friend who received a fabulous short hair cut. My experience, however, did not yield such wonderful results. My hair was cut by a very young man with little experience, obviously. My hair is no joke- it's thick, curly, and ethnic, and that takes a special touch and understanding of how curly hair works. I asked specifically for someone with 'Deva' curly-hair experience. Maybe he did have that certification, but it really didn't show. In addition to the cut, I also wanted to get my hair colored (for the first time). Upon sitting down, I tried to explain that I didn't have any experience with hair color and wanted guidance on what would work for my hair- which is dark brown, almost black. What happened from there was him listening to me, disappearing for a few minutes to talk to the owner, re-appearing, asking more questions, disappearing to talk to the owner, etc. She finally came in to give some direction for the color. I decided on a color and style (dark red, streaks from the root). I didn't learn until halfway through that they were doing balayage, or even what that meant. I'm so, so glad I didn't go with a color that involved any bleaching- I can't imagine what would have happened. In the meantime, we worked on the cut. I have a curly afro and basically just wanted a trim. He clearly didn't understand the mechanics of my hair, and I ended up with way too much chopped off from the bottom, barely any from the sides or top. He seemed too distracted with doing the color to spend much more time on the hair. I didn't see the full extent of how poorly it was cut until I went home, washed my hair, and tried to re-style. That's when I discovered multiple un-trimmed hairs hanging down past my shoulders, and that the top was way too heavy to maintain its shape. Between that and the hair color- the red streaks ended up looking wildly disorganized (a lot in the back, almost none in the front)- I was extremely disappointed in the $200+ I spent there. I called the owner (Heather) and asked to come back in to at least get my haircut fixed. She did it personally. We eventually got to the look I wanted, but throughout the cut she was joking about how nervous she was and that one cut could totally ruin the style, so on and so forth. Maybe some people find this amusing, but after already having a bad haircut I was hardly in the mood. I basically had to guide her step-by-step by explaining how my other hairstylist (who I will obviously go back to) had handled the cut. I'm shocked by the number of high reviews here. Maybe my experience was a unique one, but I would not recommend anyone with more 'complicated' hair visit this salon. read more

I'm a curly girl who's been seeing Heather Barclay, the owner, for a few years, at her previous salon and now here. She's extraordinary in that she listens to what you want, asks about your personal styling habits, and takes the time to get to know *you* so that you'll wind up with a haircut that suits you. For example, I never blow dry my hair and don't like to spend more than 4 minutes styling it in the morning. She works with that and gives me awesome cuts that are low maintenance and look good. Most importantly, if you ask her opinion on a style you're considering, she'll give you the straight dope -- not just feed you what you want to hear. Her staff are all either trained or being trained in the specifics of cutting curly hair, so I feel confident booking with just about anybody for trims. They're all very talented, personable, and professional. The salon is clean, modern, and funky and it smells great: fresh and citrusy, not like burning chemicals. If you have curly or wavy hair, go here. I didn't really think too much when I booked an appointment for a "curly haircut," figuring it wasn't going to be anything different. I'm used to having my haircut and getting lectured or scorned when I reveal to the stylist that I don't shampoo my hair or blow dry it or really do ANYTHING to it and then watching as they shampoo it and blow dry it and get all weird on me when it turns out looking like a frizzy mess. So I was pleasantly surprised when I went in today, had Josh cut my hair, and it came out looking incredible. This involved washing the hair with a special sulfate-free, paraben-free cleanser, conditioning it, and adding some gel... drying it with a diffuser... I normally would ask a stylist to reset the layers in my hair to help boost volume, but there was so much natural curl brought back out that it didn't really seem necessary. I was also happy because he was able to pinpoint exactly what he needed to do to my bangs to get them looking they way I wanted them... I couldn't really figure out what it was about them that was annoying me but he took out a bit of the volume in them and they looked amazing once again for the first time in, well, ages. I already knew quite a bit about taking care of my hair, but I think a lot of people with curly/wavy hair don't, so I totally recommend this place--they'll tell you exactly what to do with your hair and why to keep it looking fresh and clean and amazing without using a ton of creams and stuff. read more

New to town, I was excited to find a salon that once I felt comfortable with, could help me get creative with my style. That dream however was short lived at Orange Salon. With such high reviews I didn't think it would matter who I was assigned to when I called. Biggest mistake. Shortly after sitting down and talking with the young stylist it was made clear that he was very new and lacked confidence in his abilities. There were several times he left to speak with the owner to determine how he should proceed. I wanted a partial highlight and a haircut. My partial highlight was barely a highlight, I could have done it better at home with my own professional products. I asked him to simply reshape my haircut. What I received was a straight trim to the bottom layer....I understand we all have to start somewhere, but as a former hairstylist its disappointing that the owner doesn't recognize someone inability to service her salon correctly. For the price of hair services it's something that should be highly considered. read more

You think you know what a good curly hair cut is... but unless you have been to Orange Salon.... you have no idea. I have been using the Deva Curl products for a couple of years but didn't realize that there were actual trained Deva Curl Specialists in Austin. When I saw that Heather had done the training AND trained all of her stylists in the "way of the curls" I had to try it out. First off, another review mentioned parking - there is parking behind the house - so no worries there. I walked in not really knowing what to expect. I got the confident and sassy Heather telling me how she was going to make my curls the BOMB. (or something along those lines - ha) OK... put your money where your mouth is... and boy did she ever! First off, she cuts your hair dry to preserve the natural curl. Away went the shelves that had been forming since my last cut. Next, I found out that i have been using the Deva Curl products completely wrong. Heather gave me a complete tutorial on how to properly apply each product. I haven't been using nearly enough product for fear of grease and crusty hair. However, Deva Curl is meant to be lathered in. What. A. Difference. I thought I had watched enough videos about applying this product. However, having someone in person do it on your hair is worth every penny. I came in with flat "wavy" hair and left with curls that looked as though someone had done them with a curling iron. I wish I would have taken a before and after picture to show you... you really wouldn't believe it. Heather obviously knows what she is doing. Ruben is amazing and he really understands my hair. I've gone to him twice now for my coloring and both times I left 110% satisfied. My first visit was for an ombre and I was really nervous because I've had it done before at a Toni&Guy, which did not turn out good. By that, I mean it looked like Drew Barrymore's dye dipped hair but in a dark copper shade (wtf?!). Ruben fixed it and blended everything so perfectly and even helped me choose the perfect shade of blonde without looking harshly contrasted against my naturally black hair. After I saw the results, I knew I had finally found my colorist. I came back the second time for a summer balayage and wanted a darker shade of blonde but wasn't sure how to explain it so I just brought some pictures. Ruben suggested a sandy blonde color, which turned out amazing of course and is my favorite color to date! My only lament is that I live in Houston and don't get to come touch up my hair as often as I'd like to but when I'm in need of a new color/look, this is the only place (and person) I go to. read more

RUBEN ROSALES is an excellent stylist. A BLONDE expert and gives the most reasonable, competitive prices you'll find. And he knows how to stretch your appointments and dollar. He "smudges" the roots with a gloss (makes your hair look ombre for a while instead of a harsh line of demarcation). He prefers you grow your hair out as long as possible before he goes back in. He cares about your hair health and doesn't want to overlap bleach causing breakage. After smudging, the next appointment is partial highlights, and then the next appointment is fill in the color completely. So, really, you're only doing full root touch-up every 6-9 MONTHS instead of every 6 WEEKS. He gave me the color I asked for. Can play safe or experimental. And has creative solutions for what you're trying to achieve. He splits his time between Austin and Los Angeles, so you have to text him way in advance to make an appointment, but it's worth it. read more

I was first referred to Heather by my aunt who was a photographer in Austin for about 40yrs. I really wanted to like Orange Salon. It smells fabulous inside, decor is cool, and the stylists are very friendly and talkative. I give 2 stars because although Bobby was very very nice and good price my hair looked exactly the same as when I walked in. I have dirty blonde hair and wanted to go very light ash blonde (have done this before and knew what I wanted). Told him I wanted to go much lighter and showed him photos....I paid & tipped because I just do those things and thought maybe it was the lighting or the style??? But no...I was out over $100 and it took over 2 hours!!! to see no change. I will say he called after hearing my voicemail and offered to fix it at no cost but I just didn't trust that he would actually get the job done, ya know? read more
