I am updating my review to 5 stars after Karu salon's response to my earlier review: Chava called me after I posted my earlier review and was extremely apologietic, kind and understanding. She told me that she had talked to the other staff and that they felt bad about what had happened. She then offered me a free color correction/redo with Kristin when I returned from my holiday trips. Kristin texted me and we talked about my formula and what I wanted to get done, and she was very understanding about the color correction. When I arrived yesterday for the redo, Kristin and Chava were so accomodating and nice. Kristin looked at my hair and immediately knew which colors/formulas to mix. Brittany even came over and apologized to me and was so sweet about what happened. Looking back, I honestly do not think that the staff was trying to be rude and that it was overall a misunderstanding. Kristin was so fun to talk to and she did an AMAZING job on my hair! Even just the color process portion without the highlight looked so blended and stunning. She even stayed late and meticulously went over each foil to make sure that it came out perfectly. All in all, I think that it takes a lot of courage, integrity and humility to call and apologize like Chava and Brittany did, and Kristin did such an incredible job on my hair and fixed everything that needed to be done. I really appreciate Karu's apology and think that their customer service is something that is rare nowadays. I HAD near platinum hair, wanted some silver with minimal low lights. 6 1/2 hours later, back is pretty, front is grey with a huge chunk of muddy brown after i specifically said small amounts of low lights. Then she cut my hair. Did nothing I asked and chopped it off. Did get a refund that I appreciate but want to charge an arm and leg to fix. NO THANK YOU!!! The reply saying $170 service is NOT what I was quoted for a redo. $170 would have been reasonable and I would have become a returning customer. I love this place! First of all, the energy is phenomenal; you can feel it as soon as you walk in the front door. The studio is full of stylists who are not only magnificently talented, but also warm, friendly, creative, and passionately in love with their work. And I couldn't be happier with my hair cut by Taylor! It can be hard to find someone who knows how to handle coarse, curly hair like mine, but Taylor gave my locks the TLC they so desperately needed. She stayed true to the length that I wanted and added some pretty face-framing layers in the front. And I don't know what kind of magic she is, but my hair came out way shinier, bouncier, healthier, softer, and happier than it ever has been. First I would like to say that this place is absolutely beautiful inside,the complimentary water and coffee is a very nice touch to make your clients feel comfortable and welcome. Now down to the nitty gritty... I had seen via Instagram that they were looking for hair models so I sent in a few pictures of my current hair was asked to come in to have my hair colored and be a "model". I thought this whole time I would be modeling for the salon and that would mean having pictures taken of my hair to show their work. That's not really what they are referring to. Models,in this case from what I was told,is essentially being the guinea pig so hairstylists can try new things on your hair. Which I completely understand and I think it's a great way for artists to continue their education in the beauty field,but no one explained to me what exactly I was there for until my stylist starting putting color on my hair. First off,I was handed off through Kari to Nicole,who would be doing my hair. Immediately I was skeptical of Nicole because,and this is just me personally, but if you are a hairstylist and you have no social media accounts or pictures of your work so you can show your new clients that's immediately a red flag. I like to see my hair stylists work,9 times out of 10 that's what's going to draw in new clients for you. But Nicole was really sweet,kind, and made me comfortable. Nicole and I had talked for a week or so about exactly what we both wanted to do. In the photos I've attached you can see what she sent me via email stating that's what she wanted to do to my hair. Looks beautiful right? I thought so too! So going in and sitting down we went over again what exactly we were going to do,I made it clear I did not want a style with a lot of upkeep so I didn't want anything right on my roots because honestly I don't have the money to keep coming back for touch ups. Nicole said she understood but when she started foiling,she put the product right at my root,I started feeling uneasy in my head but I told myself to trust her because she was so sweet and seemed so knowledgeable. Plus I thought maybe she was doing like a color similar to my natural and was just going to blend it in. Long story short,as you can see from the photos it came out nothing like the photo she sent me. I'm still pretty confused on how "don't put anything on my roots" or "I want a natural blonde look" translated to getting this result but now I feel really mislead and I'm very unhappy with my hair. It looks nothing like what I was told. I'm not meaning to bash Nicole in anyway way. She is truly one of the most kind hairstylists I've ever worked with but don't send your clients photos like this then give them something completely different and cheap looking because now I'm facing having to pay 200 dollars to have it fixed. Nicole has been in contact with me to make things right but I wouldn't be lying if I said I had some trust issues with going back to KaRu Salon to have it fixed. read more

IF YOU HAVE CURLS - THIS PLACE CAN MAKE THEM AWESOME! DIONNE might be new to the salon, but she clearly has loads of curly hair experience. It was also my first time visiting the salon in general and she made the visit great (so did Ai (sp?), the receptionist, who got me a fork so I could eat my lunch while in the chair). Anyway, I have wavy-curly hair. Some of it is even straight. I lovingly call it "the lion's mane." As in it is seemingly untameable. For a few of years I have experimented with different hairstyles, mainly ones that involved straight hair. All of the styles I tried were great for long straight hair, but required me actually straightening all of my hair to actually show the style off. Recently, a little over a year or so, I have desired a move towards my more naturally curly hair. This has been difficult. Most stylist want to keep all of the layers long and want to cut it while it's wet and not styled in curls - thus, triangle head. :/ Curly haired girls, you know exactly what this dreaded cut looks like and none of us like it. Not Dionne! She gets it! She did an initial cut when I came in to give the general shape needed for my type of curls and what I asked for - please don't cut it too short, I so like length. Then, after washing my hair and letting it curl into it's natural state, she trimmed it a little further for extra detail. I am in love! Came in for a consultation with Kari. Spoke with her about the issue I've had at another salon I went to trying to lighten my hair - I was hoping to get an ashy blonde color but they didn't bleach my hair and I was left with orange hair. Left the salon with her basically telling me they can't do what I want (turning dark brown hair into ash blonde - I thought this was a pretty basic job?) and gave me no other suggestions. Even another request to go darker with a navy ombre was rejected. From the beginning, she walked into the consultation with a very annoyed expression on her face (I requested a private consultation because I cover my hair for religious purposes) and she was very snappy with me when I attempted to show her photos of what I wanted. When she finally did look at the photo, she was all about trying to get rid of me by saying that she can't give me the color I want unless I invest over $1000 and multiple months in the salon. When I asked about a black-navy ombre, she again said she can't do it and suggested extensions. I left feeling very upset and robbed of the consultation fee I had to pay for a "professional" to tell me they don't want to provide services to me. Not sure if she just had a really bad day or she really wanted to get rid of me. Everyone else at the salon was nice. read more

It kills me how amazing KaRu is, HONESTLY. I don't let my hair get touched by just anyone. It's curly, very fine, and very prone to being frizzy. Being a student, I usually had to resort to box dye jobs which were normally okay, but always left my hair a little dry -- a problem, especially because I was growing it out. That all changed once I tried KaRu (and got a full time job). As long as I'm living in Austin, I will be forever loyal to KaRu Salon. For starters their customer service is incredible and they see you almost immediately after you've checked in. I've gotten three dye jobs there before, one with Katie (who I believe is no longer there) and these past two times with Aili (who did my hair today!). Every single time, they've nailed the exact color that I wanted, or did something slightly different that I just didn't KNOW I wanted. But oh man, today I decided to go for it: I got a balayage. Aili already has a sense for what I like (she remembered me and remembered from the last time I came which was in like MARCH) and once I showed her pictures she got to work. It was a long process (almost 3 hours) but it's seriously all worth it, especially because I know KaRu will do a great job. I left with a lighter wallet, but also beautiful copper and dark brown balayage. She also did a blowout on my hair -- something I never get done because no one does it right except for Aili. I can go on and on about KaRu, but all I can say is that they provide exceptional hair service, exceptional customer service (with really chic decor and comfy smocks), and y'all can always count me as a customer. read more

Cute space in a great location, and they do a good job from all of my experiences here. I've never walked out of here unhappy, and that's saying something since they're a bit on the pricier side (but I've always found the results worth the price, myself). However, they do have really high turnover with their staff... I started going here in December 2014 and since then I've had four different stylists and one colorist (FYI, they don't let you have one person for both here) because they had such high turnover with the stylists. I stuck it out because I absolutely loved my colorist, but then she left too. There seem to be a few people that have been there awhile, so my recommendation would be to try and book with one of the more tenured stylists or colorists. read more

My hair was long, very long. You're probably imagining a Pantene commercial where the model sways her head from side to side, unleashing long, luxurious locks. But you would be wrong. My long hair was just that: long and looked more like a new riff on a mullet than anything that belongs in a shampoo commercial. Enter Karu salon: after reading the rave reviews on Yelp, I made an appointment to see Tim for a much-needed haircut. I absolutely love hair/nail/spa places that do online appointments. Come on now, it's 2013 - I don't need to talk to a receptionist on the phone and play the "are you free when I'm free?" game. So I went in for my haircut and had a good heart-to-heart with Tim about my hair, my lifestyle, and my hair "don'ts". As in "I don't like wispy ends or bangs" and then he got to work. I've got to tell you, Tim is a veritable rockstar. In an hour, he transformed my look and now my hair looks awesome front & back. He was chill, easy going, and managed to keep up an hour long conversation with me about the Austin food scene (don't you love how what you eat nowadays speaks volumes about who you are?). I literally LOVE Toni Bish. She is the first hairstylist/colorist that I have decided to come to repeatedly. Ive gone to see her twice so far with really big hair changes (bright orange balayage, and then changing up my hair to mostly blonde with thick Zoey Deschanel bangs) and she did them with ease while making me feel comfortable. I completely trust her and her judgement, and have never left unhappy. She is amazing! She is also very personable and friendly, and you can just tell that she really loves what she does. Karu overall is very nice, and very well kept together. The inside is decorated so cutely. And ALL of the staff seem to be very knowledgeable about what they do at Karu. Karu is the only place I'll go now for color and cut. I've been to my fair share of salons in Austin, and I had never found a place where I've consistently left feeling better than I even though I would going in...until I found Karu!! And we're not talking simple cuts and color--I went from long hair to a bob (Tim is AMAZING!) and gotten a toned down ombre (Anne is a color genius. She knew exactly what would work for my pesky blonde hair and I just let her do her thing. She even suggested a more affordable option instead of all over highlights, and that is a rarity in my experience! I LOVED what it turned out looking like.) Most recently, I went to Karu to have them fix up a badly executed attempt at a self-trim. Tim was booked, so I made an appointment with Belle (since I absolutely trust anyone Karu would have on their team), and I was thrilled yet again with how enjoyable the experience was. For one, Belle has the most adorable tiny puppy who was visiting the salon, and I'm personally voting to have the little thing be Karu's new mascot. I want her in my lap for all of my treatments! But back to the actual cut. I immediately trusted Belle's skill and judgement, and she knew right away what I wanted my cut to look like. It turned out (again!) looking better than I even thought it would, and I walked out of the salon feeling amazing! (Belle also gives hands down the most amazing head massage when getting shampooed. Like...I'll-be-booking-a-simple-trim-soon-just-to-get-that-massage, amazing.) One last thing--I know we've all had so many of those cuts/color treatments where you're put through either mildly to severely forced conversation. Many times, you just wish you could just relax in silence without having to drag out more talk about where you grew up and what you're doing this weekend. Karu has something in their water, because the people there are the most relatable, funny and genuine I've met. If you're a silent relaxer, they'll catch that and let you chill. But for the chatty types, the people here are so nice to talk to. Belle in particular was amazing, and I not only left with a gorgeous haircut, but I feel like I seriously had the best therapy session ever and have made a true friend. Tim Patrick is brilliant. I've recently moved to Austin and scoured Yelp to try to find a great stylist. After reading reviews that mentioned Tim, a friend and I decided that we'd give KaRu a try. BEST decision we made. The staff is friendly and engaging; we immediately felt welcomed in the salon. The true gem of the salon is Tim Patrick. He is not only a fantastic person that is fun and personable, he is an amazing stylist. Long story short, I had naturally curly hair, and now my hair has changed to straight. He talked with me about what I had in mind, but (more importantly) what would look good on me, and how to style my hair at home. Ummmmm best $25 I've ever spent! Ok, well, $35 if you include tip. I got a living social deal, $25 for a haircut/style, which is obviously an awesome deal. My wonderful stylist Nikki was fabulous. I loved her. She even hugged me goodbye. That's never happened to me before! I have feather extensions in my hair (three of them) that were all put in by Julia/FeatherLuxe -- and Nikki was nice enough to take them out and then put them back in after my cut, and didn't even charge me extra (which she probably should have). When she shampoo'ed my hair she also gave me an awesome head massage.... I wanted to just lay in that chair all day. Her hands are magical. I only wanted a trim, and she did exactly what I wanted, which was amazing. You'd be surprised how often you ask for a trim and end up with half your hair chopped off. Seriously, Nikki is da bomb. She was wonderful. The whole salon was wonderful. They are so nice and welcoming, I'm definitely coming back. It's safe to say this is my new hair salon. My only complaint, and I don't even think it warrants as a complaint, but the only thing keeping this place from being five stars for me was the feather extensions. Yes, she took them out and put them back for free... but they attach them to your hair in a different way, it's not a metal clamp like Featherluxe, it's a softer material and definitely does not work as well with my super thick hair. The strands of my hair it's clamped to keeps escaping, and it's harder to brush my hair with the new clamps. So, I'd probably go to Mana Culture or track down the Featherluxe girls if you just want feather extensions. But. If you want an awesome haircut/style/experience, Karu is the place to go. read more

Since it's NYE I wanted my hair flat iron curled, my favorite way to style my hair these days. Nikki was my stylist and boy can she give an amazing scalp and neck massage, heck yeah!!! She was sweet and a great conversationalist, and really seemed to enjoy doing hair. She was meticulous with every step of my appt - shampoo, dry and style. Love this place! My husband and I have been customers for about a year, and we just adore everyone at Karu. Everyone is very friendly and the atmosphere is so relaxing and inviting. I've been to many salons in Austin, and was never really satisfied with my cut or color. Then, I found Kari and Tim. They are wonderful people, and so great at what they do. Tim has been cutting my hair for 1 year now, and it is the healthiest it's ever been AND he manages to keep it super long! Don't know how he does it, but he's the best. It's been about three weeks since my cut with Timothy Patrick and it still looks amazing! The hardest part about moving to a new city was finding a stylist, so I'm thrilled to find someone I can trust with my tresses. Girlfriends have asked who cut my hair. Men whistle at me on the street. I have thick, straight hair and it's hard for me to get the shape I want. I was able to say pretty general things like "I like the length but don't want crazy layers" and Timothy was able to translate my preferences into an amazing cut that I'm incredibly happy with! I was also really impressed by his meticulousness -- he's really an artist. Expect a nice shampoo, a wet cut, a great blowout, and a dry cut. I was also surprised that I didn't walk out of the salon with heaps of product in my hair -- he styled it pretty much like I do every day, so there were no surprises. I originally found Karu Salon and the beautiful Tina Spears Master Hair Colorist through Yelp. I went in for a consultation and chose Tim Patrick for the cut. I am really happy I chose Karu for my first color experience. Tina is an amazing talent who gave me a beautiful ombre that was complimented from the first day to the time walked out of the salon to the day I returned to have it touched up 6 months later. Tim is an amazing hair stylist knows his cut, styles and products and I have walked away very happy with everything he has recommended to me. These two always make me feel welcome, take the time to listen to what it is you are coming in for, but are also fearless in offering up fresh ideas. KaRu is one amazing place. Not only are their stylists and colorist amazingly talented, it's a fun, friendly, and unpretentious place. The ambiance is energetic and inviting and the decor is stylish and beautiful. And they always seem to be traveling to hair and color shows, so they keep up to date on the latest cutting and coloring techniques and trends. When I first moved to Austin, I had two (yes, two) really bad coloring jobs in a row. When I complained to a friend, she ordered me to go to Tina which I'm so glad I did and am never looking back. My color was seriously jacked up (read: brassy blonde twice over with orange-y leaking at my roots. Good times.) yet when I sat down in Tina's chair, she didn't even flinch despite my need for a corrective color. She got my hair back to a beautiful blonde and has been keeping it that way for the last three years. Tim is a genius when it comes to cutting and volumizing my very fine hair which, without products and brushing, is as straight and limp as it gets. Tim cuts my hair so that I can style it in a number of ways and I don't end up making myself looking like an 80s hair band groupie. Recently, he used a new technique to cut my bangs and I absolutely love them! Whenever a new product comes in that will work with my hair, Tim always tries it out on my hair and doesn't try to show me anything that wouldn't work in my hair but never pressures me to buy anything (actually I've never felt pressured to buy anything there), which I appreciate. Plus, he's hilarious and that makes the time fly by. Since I've been going to KaRu, I've referred several of my friends all of whom have raved about it and I can't imagine going anywhere else. I have never been one to keep up proper maintenance with my hair or nails or anything of that nature. Mostly, what keeps me out of salons is that they are so expensive and I can never justify spending the money just to look good. However, when the Living Social deal came up for a haircut for $25 bucks, I couldn't pass it up, and I'm so happy I didn't. Nikki was friendly and most importantly, listened to what wanted. I have extremely curly hair and she took the time to make my mane straight when I asked. I know this is very time consuming, so I totally appreciate her doing that for me, especially since I was already getting such a great deal. This salon is small and quaint and the decor was adorable. I have already recommended Nikki to several of my friends and set a return appointment when I left. I am looking forward to seeing what she does next! read more

Robin cuts my hair and knows exactly what to do. I have super thick hair and I have been trying to grow it out for a while but end up chopping it off when summer rolls around. I have had stylists attempt to give me manageable layers before, but they end up looking terrible and puffy in the wrong places. After having my hair thinned and layered by Robin it is easy to manage and looks great. It is hard to grow your hair out in Texas, especially when you have enough hair for three people.
