A must visit when in Bozeman, they offer an outstanding range of menu items including some Buffalo options which is always hard to find. Went with the classic tenderloin and it did not disappoint, cooked to perfection paired with potatoes and carrots. The restaurant itself has a great bar for a few pre dinner cocktails, however the real star is their service. Ribeye was terrible. Steaks are over priced you're better off taking the family to Texas Roadhouse. At the roadhouse you'll get a steak prepared correctly on a chargrill that melts in your mouth. Don't waste your time eating at this overpriced restaurant. read more

I was told to go to Open Range and get the ribeye because it was the best one ever... so I went and got the ribeye. It was delicious. Hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had, if not the best steak. I placed my order to go and was even able to get a cocktail sealed up for safe transport home. I was also told I needed to try the escargot but I did not think take out escargot would taste the same as in person. So I will be back to try that one day and I'll report back when I do. read more

We have lived in Bozeman for a decade now; but took a couple of years off from dining at restaurants. Our August 2022 visit to Open Range was a wedding anniversary celebration as well as a "welcome back to the real wold" dining event. We were disappointed. Wines were not offered by the glass, only by the bottle starting at about $60 and up. I took the "Prime Rib Special", my spouse took the on-menu chicken; we split a salad and bought a nice $60 red wine. The waiter was friendly and very, very busy. Open Range has visible staff shortages for which I do not hold them responsible....this is a problem everywhere. Our entrees came after about a 45 minute wait from ordering. The prime rib was "refrigerator cold" to the touch and nicely red in the middle. It was brought by a kitchen staffer (not the waiter). When the waiter came back to our table (10 minutes after serving) I told him the Prime was cold and he took it back. I cut the end just a bit to mark the meat. A few minutes later the meat came back to me (the same piece judging my my mark) on a blazing hot plate. It was no longer "rose" in the middle, it was cooked to straight brown. They had obviously just popped it in a microwave and re-plated the meat on a prewarmed plate. It was tasty enough, but frankly, I like a warm piece of meat with a rose-rare center. Not too much to ask from an expensive steak restaurant. I did not have the heart to send it back for what I had hoped to eat, we decided to simply finish, skip dessert and leave. My spouses' chicken offering was correct with no issues. We paid about $215 for this experience including a tip. Open Range is THE premier steak restaurant in Bozeman, aside from my own kitchen. I am not sure if the cost and quality are aligned anymore. read more

Great staff and customer service. Very attentive to their guests and the food was delicious. I had a medium rare steak, it came out to perfection. Parker brings a professional but enthusiastic approach to the bar. If you happen to come in ask for Parker! Have him tell you his joke of the day. I have been staring at this empty white page and one yellow star for 3 days now. Because 3 days ago this restaurant left me speechless. I will go into more details, but if you don't have a ton of time, move on and go to a different "steak house." Go to Texas Roadhouse, Outback, or even Applebee's. You will get better service and better food. And at least the owners of those places will not pretend to be Montanan because they have a house in Big Sky. More coming soon. read more

This place has such great potential that I isn't living up to at all. I've been three times. Once I had the smash burger, which was more like a pile of scrambled beef on a soggy English muffin. The second time I had the bison tenderloin. It was well seasoned and cooked perfectly but served room temperature, so it wasn't very enjoyable. Last night I had the duck breast, which was delicious and cooked excellently. The fruit chutney on top was a very nice touch and added an nice sweetness. However, the cold rice pilaf was unseasoned and undercooked, and the caramelized fennel was bland and didn't add anything to the dish. Great menu. Great ideas. Poor execution. So I went here with mixed expectations after reading many of the previous reviews. Tonight though, (Thursday night) this place was outstanding and didn't fall short in any way. The whole table ordered 16 oz ribeyes they were all cooked to perfection. We tried the bacon Mac n cheese and split amongst the table there wasn't a single morsel of that left. We also tried the French soup and wedge salad. Both those items were good, were they the best I've had no, but they didn't detract from the meal by any means. Open Range is steakhouse in the middle of Main street in downtown Bozeman. The outside appearance fits the bill with a beautiful brick facade equipped with a sign that shows a silhouette of a steer. Inside it is simple, clean and more casual than I expected. In all fairness, downtown Bozeman is a very cool, casual college town. The servers are very friendly and their attire is straight from the 90's with oversize white button down shirts and slightly baggy jeans. I loved it. We ordered cocktails and they were very good and poured well. The menu is simple and easy to navigate. We were a group of 7 and they sat us at a high table with high chairs. We all had the tenderloin, a very popular choice there. It took EXTREMELY long for us to get our food and when it came it was nearly cold. However, the meat was good quality and was still buttery in your mouth considering the temperature. The veggies that accompanied our protein were delicious as well. Ultimately the great service and quality of food overshadowed my long wait and temp of my meal. I also feel that the pricing of the dishes are high for such a casual ambiance and experience. read more

We were seated in a booth facing the wall even though every other booth was open and we asked if we could maybe sit elsewhere. The hostess simply said no. We've been to Open Range many times over the last couple years. It's no longer the restaurant it used to be and we will not come back. It was always a little pricey, but in the past it was worth it. Everything was garbage this time and absolutely not with the money, not even half the money. The house cut fries are gone and replaced with frozen bagged fries they cook. The ribeye I ordered was really just a piece of mediocre prime rib already cooked that they barely seared each side after cutting. The hamburger was gross and dry, and not the same burger they used to serve. Very sad that Bozeman has lost what used to be a fantastic restaurant. read more

We were very disappointed that this place fell short of various recommendations by colleagues and locals. We found it to be completely overrated! First impressions were really good- the visuals are interesting; black and white photos of dogs by visitors and an updated interior. However the fake candles and other decor was inconvenient with the idea of a high end establishment. Our waitress wasn't attentive and actually a tad curt and our entrees arrived 45 minutes after ordering. She didn't much care about the experience we were having from her quick "how's your dinner?" as she ran by. The food was just okay. Nothing to write home about. My steak came out warm obviously has been sitting waiting for our waitress for awhile, the fries were overly salted and the beets in the salad were overcooked or from a can. I don't know how this place received good reviews. I am not a picky eater and it was the worst meal I have had in a long time. I had the Salmon and it basically tasted like brown sugar. My partner had the Chicken and it was ok but the side of rice (or whatever they called it) was awful. The drinks were not strong, the prices are way too high for the quality of food they provide. Had a wonderful experience at Open Range. The atmosphere and the restaurant are very inviting. The food was great. Had the shrimp cocktail and the bisque to start. The bisque was really good - very flavorful and done well. Had the ribeye and the fries. Loved them. Steak cooked like I ordered - medium rare and the seasoning was nice. The fries were very good especially with the truffle added to them. To top it had the cheesecake with the chocolate and raspberry on it - perfect way to end the meal. Service was very attentive. Ambience was good but that was about it!! Coming from the Kansas City area and traveling extensively we appreciate fine food. Service was just so so. It took over 45 minutes to get our meal after it was ordered and everything was cold. I had scallops which were correctly cooked but again cold! The husbands steak was good and cooked correctly. Vegetables with the steak and the steak were cold. We asked for bread and we got a small rustic loaf with a small container of flavored butter for $9.00. We also ordered mushrooms on the side which came out in an iron skillet looking perfectly sliced, perfectly bland, and tasting perfectly like canned mushrooms. Certainly not worth the $12 price tag. Overall this is not a place where I would come back to. I think they rely more on reputation, then anything else. Surely there are some better restaurants in Bozeman than this! read more
