I ordered last night my 2 combinations. The 1st is orange chicken, 2nd is Broccoli with mixed veggies. I know that the inflation rate of meat and veggies are going up and that's understandable. My wife told me about Open Kitchen but she couldn't remember the name until I was running down Chinese Restaurant names. I have to say their food is delicious. We would drive into Rialto or a Rancho Cucamonga for Chinese food that we liked but found our spot close to home. We order the chow mein, kung pao, and General Tsao. Wow my friend has been trying to get me to go here with her and I finally did. I'll have to say I was impressed. The staff was very attentive and the food came out fast. Probably the best Chinese takeout/sit-in restaurant in Redlands. Their food is fresh, good value, and served HOT. This is an extra bonus when ordering takeout as it's just as hot when you arrive home, in sturdy, leak-proof plastic containers. I'm subtracting a star from an otherwise perfect rating because of one weird quirk... they try to be something they're not. To the first-timer, one is confused into thinking you place *all* orders at the counter, even dine-in. This turns out not to be true. I got given a slightly "off" look when ordering at the counter and then telling them I wanted to eat on the premises. They seem to want to give you table service, but they should really just give up on this and have all orders done at the counter. It's confusing, perplexing, and somewhat comical to witness. Note: This is a restaurant highlighting flavors from China. There is a difference, guys. But, I went less risky (fearing the higher use of MSG) and had the chow mein and the broccoli and beef, with more broccoli than beef. They fixed it together quickly and I found their accent to be more southern, thus giving me some home comforts since part of my ancestry comes from the southern China areas. And I was right! The chow mein was very well cooked, nicely salty, with plenty of veggies. They didn't overuse the soy sauce, which was very nice. The broccoli and beef were not soggy and the broccoli was not as soft but still had a good crisp. And it was cooked well enough to make me want more and be able to heat up again and eat it without losing any of the original flavor. The place is located in a larger plaza which gave it plenty of parking. And there were many seats inside which made it feel like an Asian food stop but not a restaurant. We used to live a block up from this place, so we would come here for take-out any time we were in the mood for Chinese. Being sensitive to food additives, fast food Chinese food has been something I've avoided virtually all of my adult life. I ate here awhile back (as in years ago, when they first opened), based on the "No msg" labels on their menu and the fact that it's cooked fresh--and imagine my pleasant surprise when I didn't feel lethargic nor experience bloat in my face, hands, and feet like I do with other places that have the food sitting out under a lamp. Finally, I can enjoy Chinese food! We live further away now, but we still make the 15 min drive to go here any time we want Chinese food for this very reason. It's delicious and it doesn't taste fake. Add to that the fact that it doesn't make me feel awful, which is a sign of the difference in quality, and anywhere else isn't even an option. It isn't super fancy or anything, but they do have sit-down options and you will never see them scoop already made, sitting food into your to-go boxes. They cook it after you order it. As an added example of the quality and taste, I made a huge order a few months back for family that was coming over for dinner, and they asked where I had gotten it from because it "just tastes--better than other places." Their words. Plus, my mom noticed that she didn't get swelling either (probably who I inherited the sensitivity from). All in all, worth paying an extra few bucks or so for the food.
