My party of 10 was very grateful to have gotten a reservation the day of for a birthday celebration. The hostess noted that reservations could be made at least three hours in advance. For a Saturday at 4:30pm, we were seated and waited on immediately. The menu was expansive and I was surprised with the amount of vegetarian options for a Chinese restaurant. Our server was helpful in suggesting various fish options and knew their wait times. Some notable dishes were the sizzling beef with black pepper, beef scallion rolls, honey walnut chicken, mapo tofu, and fried chicken. The dishes that could be improved for flavor were the vegetarian steamed dumplings, steamed whole fish, and beef chow fun. We probably ordered around 8-10 plates (all dishes came with rice) and many arrived at the same time. The prices were very reasonable for the portions and it was just enough for everyone. Since we had a birthday celebrant, they were able to put our personal cake in the fridge. Our server provided a complimentary matcha cheesecake and candle towards the end of our meal. His robot server sidekick also sang happy birthday! I did feel like they were understaffed because the lobby hostess had to find the server for me several times when I asked for our cake and the check. Today, I visited this restaurant with a party of five and wanted to share my experience. Unfortunately, our first interaction set a negative tone for the visit. When we arrived, the hostess attempted to seat us at a table that would not have comfortably accommodated our group. I politely asked if we could be seated at a nearby table that had more space. In response, she rolled her eyes and let out an audible sigh, which felt unprofessional and dismissive. When we were eventually seated at the requested table, she placed the menus down abruptly and did not hand one to me directly, instead leaving it at the end of the table. The interaction came across as unnecessarily rude and, frankly, not in line with the level of service I would expect from a hostess. That said, I want to note that the rest of our experience was positive. Our server was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our meal. The food itself was also very good (I would not recommend the orange chicken though) and something I would return for. I hope management takes the opportunity to address the front-of-house experience, as first impressions matter and can significantly impact a guest's overall perception. My second time giving this establishment a try again. Hmmm ;( I was really disappointed to be honest . My girls even stated "it's a beautiful restaurant and it's big ", too bad the food was not that good and services are ok". Green beans - too overly cooked was a tad mushy, although flavor was good . Shu Mai - it's smaller in scale than average, taste was alright not the best . Beef chow fun - dry style is missing the smoky aroma and lack savory flavors Fried rice - had shrimps , chicken & kids stated they didn't mind it Fried chicken- was crispy a tad too over cooked to a point it was dry inside . BBQ pork char siu - I don't recommend it , maybe it was a bad batch ? but it did not taste fresh , tasted old like it was cooked the night before and reheated, the color of the pork had a tinge of grey in some pieces. None of us ate it after one bad taste. We were debating if we should mention to the waiter. Since he stop by to ask how was our meal . I had to be honest, showed him the discoloration in some of the pieces and explained to him it smells not fresh . He apologized and asked if we would like to replace it or order another dish instead. I know sushi isn't Shanghainese, so that threw me off a bit. But I'm totally not complaining because the sushi is fresh and the food here isn't full of MSG. as delicious as MSG is, my stomach is very sensitive to it, so it's hard to find Asian restaurants that won't upset my stomach. The Chinese food here is amazing, isn't too oily, and I love that they are a family style restaurant. Not to mention their bar is stacked with delicious mixed drinks. The service is pretty good, although I've had a time or two when I feel that I waited a bit too long for food or drinks. Nonetheless, they definitely are very friendly and well trained employees. We were told the steamed fish would take about 40 minutes, which we didn't mind at all--it's not a dish you often see on menus, and we really wanted to try it. I have mixed feelings about this place. It's crazy because it's packed almost every time I go, but the foods average. Some of the items are pretty good, but not the best out there, which is why it's confusing. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong food? I've tried over a dozen items and that's just been the experience thus far. What really knocked my view down a few points is the waiters. On numerous occasions it felt like they've tried to make us uncomfortable so we leave quickly. Very attentive staff that one might expect in a 5 star restaurant. Rui's has a large facility with a roomy interior. Bathrooms are very clean. I ordered from the early dinner, lunch combo type menu. Selection is somewhat limited to a few American Chinese items. I.e. orange chicken, kung pao and sweet & sour services rice, side dish in a bento box. Food was fresh with quality ingredients but was a bit bland lacking umami. The chili sauce and soy sauce at the table came in handy. Let me start by saying that I haven't taken a single bite yet BUT I spent over $200 on a Delivery and requested multiple times on the Order for EXTRA hot mustard. We received NONE. This isn't the first time that it's happened. Really disappointed and probably the last time I order food from here or even go there. ... and now for the food. Pretty disappointing. At $20 an entree ur hoping for exceptional and this really was basically mid. Nothing special with the appetizers. Egg Foo Young was NOT good at all (gravy super thin & liquid-y, and patty real eggy). Can get better fried rice at ANY Thai place. Best dish was by far the Honey Walnut Shrimp. That I'd get again. I ordered the battered salt & pepper shrimp, a few noodle dishes, and a fried rice. The oolong hot tea I ordered was not as flavorful as expected. It's almost like there was half a tea bag in the tea pot versus a full one. Their menu includes a few dim sum items all-day which is nice. I am not sure they do traditional dim sum though. Something that I noticed that's an improvement since their move, is the portion sizes have increased to match the prices. Before, portions were much smaller at the price point they charged. First time trying Rui's and it did not disappoint! The food was great, the black peppered beef was the standout for me: tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The lo mein was also delicious, full of flavor and great texture. The orange peel chicken wasn't as memorable, but still good. The restaurant has a classy, clean ambiance. Our waiter was kind and incredibly helpful, even while handling all the tables on his own. Only downside was the receptionist at the front, not the friendliest welcome. Thankfully, the 2nd hostess (with the braided ponytails) was super sweet and made us feel much more welcome. They have a huge menu with a little something for everyone. The interior of restaurant is very nice however the service was slow with only a few patrons. We tried the dim sum, sushi rolls and a cooked entree and I would rate the food 3 stars. A huge turn off was when the hostess seated a young woman and her friend, allowing her to bring her dog into the restaurant and set in on the bench seat to nibble on a treat while they ate lunch. Albeit the dog was well behaved but it was clearly not a service animal and it was a shedding breed. Outdoors on a patio is ok but not inside a restaurant. The management is responsible for enforcing health codes. Makes me wonder what else are they lax on? read more

Rui's Shanghai Bistro has changed a lot since I last reviewed. Their new restaurant is hard to miss-- it's an enormous building in the heart of Redlands. With an upscale interior, tons of seating, and ample waitstaff, Rui's is unrecognizable from the tiny hole in the wall restaurant that it used to be. Fortunately, the recipes appear unchanged and all of my favorites still have that same flavor. The menu is even bigger than it used to be so there's always something new to get here. The honey walnut shrimp/chicken/vegetarian chicken is a must try, and I'm still a big fan of the sweet chicken curry as well. They've also added a sushi menu (though I'd pass on this, personally-- it's a little expensive and I come here for the Shanghainese flavors rather than sushi) as well as a dessert menu that includes several different flavors of shaved ice. read more

I decided to try this place based on the great YELP reviews. I ordered over the phone, and went to pick up. MARLENE was the hostesses that was helping me, and when I asked for some extra condiments for my $50 plus order, I got attitude from her. She was rude, and didn't even say thank you, until I did first. She then said it in a smart alec way. Clearly MARLENE was having a bad day or is not fit for this type of work. I have been to Rui's Shanghai Bistro once before, but for take-out only. I thought I had already did a review, but it looks like I haven't so I'm doing it now. After an amazing 2024 Yelp Falls Brew Fest, a small group of Yelpie friends and I walked over here for dinner. Upon entry, we immediately got our table with no wait time which was nice. Staff was super nice, friendly, and attentive. They brought our foods out all at once which was great. They refilled our water timely. Here's my take on the 5 dishes... 1. Fish with pickled cabbage soup (medium spice) - Good amount of fish, pickled flavor was spicy and tangy. Very nice! 2. Eggplant in garlic sauce (medium spice) - Excellent wok flavor! Good size eggplant. 3. Mapo tofu (medium spice) - Probably should have gone with more spice, but then again, the numbing sensation came through at the end. This was my least favorite dish. 4. Sauteed green bean with garlic - Amazingly tasty! Beans were crunchy! Great wok flavor! 5. Chicken chow mein - Surprisingly good! Noodles were thinner than expected. More chicken would have been nice. Ambiance was cool and comfortable. Lots of dining space. Really high ceiling. They even have enclosed rooms for special events... they probably will need to be booked in advance. There's even a nice bar at one side of the restuarant. Overall, foods and service were on point. Was good the first time we came but has sadly gone down hill since then. Ordered multiple dishes and didn't even receive two of them. Seriously understaffed on a holiday- Valentine's Day no less when people will clearly be eating dinner at a restaurant. They have robot waiters sending out food. Nothing comes at the same time. I had sizzling beef that came before we had any rice so I had to choose to eat it without rice or eat it cold. When we finally did get fried rice it tasted like cheap takeout place but costs 4x as much. Wife wanted red bean buns that never came after 45 mins. No refills on drinks the entire time. $75 for 6oz of beef, bad fried rice, fried pork, slow (bad?) service. I can't in good conscience recommend this place anymore. read more

The place has ample parking. The waitstaff was always attentive. The food is always exceptional and delicious. My wife and I came over for some dim sum and they delivered. The space inside is adequate for all the guests. It was bright and airy. They also featured a robot serving food. NICE!! This was my second time here and I recommended that we have a retirement luncheon for my co- worker here. We needed a fancier Chinese restaurant with lots of vegetarian options. I was nervous as my first visit was not the best. I'm glad that Ruis pulled through for me today! First of all, our party of 11 were put in the smaller side room. I asked if we could move to the big dining room. They were very accommodating. The waiter we ended up with was very good! I didn't have to ask for water refills. He was on it! The food did take awhile to come out. Most likely because it all came out at once in a rolling cart. The good: Eggplant came out hot! It was good. Beware it is spicy! The basil chicken was surprisingly good! It had large pieces of jalapeño. Be careful not to bite into it. The Yan chow fried rice was excellent. I liked the pork sung on top. The scallion Pancake was crispy on the outside. It was tasty. The green beans were seasoned right. The green beans could have been crispier. The scallion beef roll were also very good except the beef was cold, otherwise I highly recommend. The general tso vegetarian chicken was a good choice. The veggie meat was crispy. Interesting place. They've got about 20 parking spots for a restaurant that can probably hold over 150 people. So look to walk about a half a mile to get to the restaurant when parking is full. It looks like it almost was a karaoke bar, with the stage, but that didn't pan out so they serve Chinese food. It wasn't that bad, I felt a little bit bad for our server. She was running around with a few large tables, and it looked like it was limited staff. The person who brought us our wanton soup was classic. He Put the bowl of wonton soup down, but no bowls to eat it with. By the time those came, we asked twice, we had to send the soup back because it was ice cold. So that kind of tells you how the meal went. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of broth, a few wontons with a couple carrots. I will say the broth was very good. read more

On two more visits here I enjoyed A6 Handmade Steamed Pork Dumplings, plump Fried Shrimps, Vegetable Rolls, a good but small Rainbow Roll, very good Crab Rangoon, fine Hot & Sour Soup, and good Wor Wonton Soup with a plentiful amount of filled wontons and shrimp to start. On both occasions the soup was very salty, and one time my blood pressure soared a few hours later likely as a result. Pepper Steak featured tender lengths of beef, and Stir Fry Beef in Oyster Sauce with Mushrooms was good with very tender beef but included relatively tough vegetables. Others at my table enjoyed good Orange Chicken and well-prepared Honey Walnut Shrimp. Steamed White Rice accompanied the entrees. And helping to wash everything down was excellent Jasmine Tea. Like a lot of folks this seemed to be a great choice traveling through Redlands with some limited options but this a class act and a gem of a place . I read some ppl complaining about sushi but who would really order that in a Shanghainese restaurant lol? As per my pics you can see they have pretty darn authentic and tasty, such a surprise . Don't try and compare this to the like the SGV but very decent, clean, value for your money and hopefully the locals also support this place read more
