This was our first visit to Okunori, and overall we had a nice evening. We were a party of five, and the restaurant has a really enjoyable atmosphere. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. We tried the Tiger Crunch Roll, California Sunset Roll, Yuzu Yellowtail, and the shishito pepper appetizer, along with several drinks. The food was good, although I wouldn't say the sushi rolls were among the best I've had. The drinks, however, were very good. We also had the Murasaki Cheesecake for one of our guests who was celebrating a birthday. Unfortunately, the experience ended on an unusual note. After we had paid our bill and left the restaurant, I received a voicemail later that evening saying we had been given the wrong bill and asking me to call back. Before I had a chance to return the call, I received another call from the restaurant the following day. I was told there was an additional $90 that needed to be charged. They did apologize for the mistake, and I approved the additional charge because we had, of course, consumed the food and drinks. What left me a little uncomfortable was how the situation was handled beyond that. Since the billing error was on the restaurant's end, I thought some small gesture--perhaps offering a drink or appetizer on a future visit--would have gone a long way toward smoothing things over and making a first-time customer feel appreciated. We did enjoy the evening, the service during dinner was very good, and I really liked the setting. The signature cocktails are unique and the bartenders are very skilled and super friendly. The food is excellent. This place is new and a must try. Everything tasted so good. We had the "Eighty Sixed" cocktail, which is basically a Lychee Martini made with Gin, but we swapped the gin with Vodka. So bomb. We got the Edamame, which was addicting, the Yuzu Yellowtail, which was full of flavor. The yellowtail sashimi was also amazing, then finished off with the Rainbow Coast Roll. Low light and fancy ambience. As soon as you enter you can definitely get the high end restaurant feel. Waiters were all very friendly and professional. We were treated nice as soon as we entered. We didn't have reservation, but they accommodated us right away. One thing I wish they would do on their menu is include how many pieces/slices of fish you're getting on all menu items. They have it on some, not all. If you have a big appetite,i probably wouldn't recommend this place as the portions are extremely small. I understand that it may be that "japanese style" and you're paying for some high quality meat and fish. We ordered the: Waygu Tartar, Spicy tuna roll, Yuzu Yellowtail, and the Fried Shiitake Red Snapper. The Waygu Tartar is essentially high quality meat that you're eating raw. At first it tasted very delicious, but as you keep eating it, i think it got to me that I was eating raw meat and it wasn't appetizing towards the end. Definitely an acquired taste. Spicy Tuna Roll: Very delicious. I enjoyed the fried onions they garnished it with. Not much to say! I'd order it again. Yuzu Yellow Tail: I wish their menu would tell you how many pieces you were getting. It came with 4 slices. They were very delicious and flavorful! The sushi however gave both me and my partner stomach issues causing us to both be sick by the end of the night. Zoe was our server, she was very attentive, well versed on the menu, very sweet, and gave great recommendations. Tried two cocktails: the lychee one and another I can't recall but had tequila. Both were very good. Steak frites with the Japanese chimi on it was fire. So good that we ordered another one. One small critique is the first steak was a little chewy. Second one came out like butter. Can't remember all of the names of the things we ordered, but yuzu yellowtail was our number one winner. We ordered another one of those as well. We got edamame, oh and the miso soup!!! The miso soup was so rich, so salty, the dashi you could taste the hours of cook, the mushrooms added a great earthiness. Our kids loved it. Holy. Flavor. We had the most incredible experience here. The food was absolutely outstanding. Miso soup? Everything about it tasted home made. It was earthy with delicious mushrooms. Garlic noodles had so much flavor without being overpowering. The sushi? Not a massive menu, but I've never had sushi with REAL crab, only ever imitation crab. Again, flavor was beyond expectations. The fish was very high quality. Sashimi came with its own spread of sauce for flavor and it was perfect. Surprisingly, I never used any soy sauce for our sushi dishes - that's a first for me. Holy flavor. Cocktails were delicious, balanced and refreshing. The service was great. With it being a newer place, our server was knowledgeable but still maintained confidence and professionalism when she needed to clarify our questions about the menu. Desserts were also incredible. There's only 2 on the menu, and I high recommend ordering both with coffee. Coffee wasn't on the menu but they obliged, which earned extra "points" from us for sure. Ambiance? We loved it. Such a great new addition to town! We tried Ōku Nori for the first time and really enjoyed it. The food was unique, the flavors were great, and our server was SO nice. We didn't catch his name, unfortunately, but he was wonderful the entire time. The Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice was one of my favorites, which surprised me because I don't normally love raw fish! It was really, really good. The Garlic Noodles were also delicious. I personally would have loved a little more sauce on them, but I'd definitely order them again. My husband had the A5 Wagyu and loved it. He said the beef was incredibly tender, and the sweet potato with it was delicious. We also tried the salted edamame, which was good, but next time I think we'll go for the spicy one. And the Golden Milk Bread for dessert was SO GOOD. It almost tasted like an amazing elevated French toast. Definitely get it! The drinks were great too. The only thing I would change is the seating. We sat in one of the two-person booths toward the very back, and the seats are angled in a way that was honestly pretty uncomfortable on our backs. We mentioned it to our server and he was super nice about it and said those booths were actually from the previous restaurant. Hopefully they can eventually update them because that was really our only complaint. Overall, we had a great experience and really liked the food. Food was okay, server only checked on us once while we were eating (we were there over an hour and a half). The table next to us was dirty for over an hour while other tables were cleaned. They took our menus and just kept serving us water like we're too broke to order more? Ordered a cheesecake and waited for 30 minutes only for the server to come back and ask us if we've received our milk cake?? But the table over got their desert 10 minutes after ordering. Bf and I went to State Street to look around and parked right in front and noticed a new restaurant was open. We were surprised because two weeks before we saw the location and was wondering what will open after Rock N Fondue closed. So we were pleasantly surprised to see the new restaurant and decided to try it. It was their official opening night. We were greeted and seated right away. The interior was so chic and elegant, with more tables upstairs. My only tiny critique would be the music was slightly too loud for my taste, but I understand it's a bar restaurant. All service was so friendly and great. The menu is an interesting Japanese fusion, which we love. The drinks were also very interesting. I had the Corpse Reviver and the Crispy Rice (with spicy tuna). He had the Sunomono salad and the Yuzu Yellowtail. All was so good! It seems as if they are trying to be a "Redlands Knockoff Nobu" which comes off as unoriginal and ultimately embarrassing. If you want authentic and great tasting sushi you're better off going to Kyo Sushi down the street. Went for the first time about 4 to 5 days after they first opened, so there were a couple growing pains. It took a long time to get seated because they were missing a host/hostess. We mentioned wanting to get Omakase, but were initially seated upstairs where they don't offer it and had to be moved down to the bar. I ordered the penicillin for my drink, and the ginger twist on it was too strong for my liking... ginger burn. I think if the ginger was less strong, the flavor would've been good. We ordered the 14 course omakase, which was decent quality, but comes out as all 14 courses at once on a tray. I typically expect the Omakase experience to be plate by plate in a little more intimate with explanations of what I'm eating. By the time we got to the seventh piece, I wasn't able to remember what each thing was. They did add in the Wagyu sashimi, which was delicious. The interior of the place is pretty. Compared to the other Omakase option in Redlands, I would go to this place if I was looking to come for sushi with a group of people, but I think I prefer the omakase experience at Shokunin just because of how it's done though the quality and price are similar. read more

I have never been served Sashimi that looked so unappetizing I almost felt sick. The drinks were okay but overpriced...not sure how many drinks it would take to make me eat the food. Closer to a 4 1/2 . Wife and I decided to try okunori on our anniversary and was very pleasantly surprised. While we ordered multiple dishes, the yuzu yellowtail which was so bright and full of flavor and miso cod ....just melt in your mouth fish butter, really stood out and had us wanting more. The waygu tartar was decent and the sushi rolls were all solid. I had mentioned it was our anniversary and they kindly brought us out a custom heart sushi dish as a congratulations. The cocktails were very well balanced and the overall atmosphere was comfortable and fun with out being uptight despite the more upscale decor and staff appearance. read more

The restaurant was busy at 5:30 PM on a Wednesday. I overheard they were turning away people for tables at the host stand if they didn't have a reservation. I asked to sit at the bar top, which quickly filled around me. There are no TVs. The atmosphere is hipster and is probably better suited for a stop for a date night, small bite, or stop along a crawl around downtown Redlands. The bartenders and sushi chef were friendly. No beers on draft. They seemed to specialize in mixed drinks. The food menu is limited in comparison to other sushi spots. The sushi was fresh. It was a thinner, lighter cut for nigiri than I am used to, but enjoyed it nonetheless. The red snapper came with an herb and sauce that was special. The miso soup had large chunks of raw mushrooms, which was interesting. I think if I get the miso again I'd ask for no mushrooms. The mixed tempura was fresh and crunchy, with a little too much salt. Twice they forgot my order and I needed to remind them what I ordered so they could check in the back of house, once for the miso and once for tempura. It could be because they are still new or that they were busy. The guests seated next to me were thrown off by some of the "upscale" attitude of the place. No ice in the water. No paper napkins. I don't see myself coming here again alone or after work for a quick bite. I can see coming here before or after going to Redlands Oyster Cult since they have a similar vibe.
