Scallop hand cut roll and salmon skin hand cut roll
    Saran W.

A friend and I went to check out Redlands Public Market and after scoping out our options, we decided to get a bite to eat at Shokunin. The dine-in location is kinda speakeasy-esque, located down a spiral staircase and behind the sliding door mural. There is also a much more visible touchpad ordering system for orders to-go. Interestingly, the to-go menu is more expansive and includes rolls, whereas dining in does not. The dine-in seating is also all counter seating, wrapped around in a U configuration where you can see the food prepared. My friend ordered tuna sashimi and miso soup while I got scallop and salmon skin cut rolls. For a weekday evening, there was a steady stream of customers stopping by to pick up orders, and a few others dining in. The staff were nice and it was neat seeing everything prepared right in front of us. I also enjoyed seeing the omakase that the couple next to us had ordered. The space feels pretty underground (because it is), with small windows coverings that I think lend to the ambience. It is a bit tricky to find because it appears closed from the outside, so maybe better signage to slide the door open would be helpful. I'd be interested to try the special rolls that are to-go only. They looked amazing as they were being packed!

Loved this little bento deal Shokunin has! Came out fast, tasted great, and was just a really great thing to have right after a long work day

Stumbled upon this place while out and about. Didn't even know this lovely sushi establishment was here. What a lovely hidden gem. Very friendly and quick service. Will come back for sure.

If you can find the place...it is worth the try. I only tried the "to go" option today so I don't have a review for the actual restaurant experience. SERVICE: I used the kiosk and it was pretty easy to order my sushi and pay. Also very easy to spend a lot of money - real quick (little pricey) FOOD: I am on keto, so I was happy to find a rice-less option. My Geisha roll was 5 fish with a cucumber wrap. My only critique would be that they made them HUGE. Good thing I have a big mouth, but I can't imagine my wife trying to eat these monsters. But, super tasty!! I'll try the restaurant next time, because if I am going to pay these prices, I may as well have some ambiance as well. But a big recommend from me!!

Our favorite sushi spot. We have tried their a la carte, to go and their omakase. Their omakase is our favorite of course but if you only have time for their a la carte, here are some of our favorites: Bomb set: a set of 3 inari style sushi (ask the chef what their toppings are for the day). Not only tasty but always a good value Eel hand roll: the eel is always cooked perfectly and I like that they do not add any sugary eel sauce. I can taste the eel and the smokey char better this way. Salmon Ikura: very fresh salmon and love the salty ikura with it Garlic chili blue crab: the spicy garlic is crunchy and not too spicy and the blue crab is sweet. Perfect balance

    Quality

Ordered 2X California Rolls for dine-in and paid for our meal, was given 1 set of chopsticks for 2 people and told we can't eat in restaurant and must take out even though restaurant was completely empty and I had requested dine in upstairs at kiosk. To make matters worse all the staff was making matters worse by trying to explain why ordering a California roll is only on the take out menu and not the dine in menú. The experience, service, empathy and kiosk system could be much better. I would rate everything a 1 of 10 at best. Nobody cares about customer service, experience, ambience or empathy at this restaurant.

Highly recommend! Shokunin is a sushi spot located at Redlands Public Market. It has a unique setup. They offer Omakase "Oh-Mah-Kah-Say" traditional dining experience in their underground space. Yes, you will have to walk down a spiral set of stairs and through a hidden sliding door. They have basic (10 piece) and premium (13 piece) courses. Reservations are recommended. Take-out and a la carte orders must be done via the kiosk upstairs. They have fresh rolls, tempura rolls, baked rolls, and classic rolls plus Shokunin specials, bentos, sushi bombs, drinks, desserts, etc. When your order is ready for pick-up, you'll receive a text with instructions to head underground. For my first visit, I ordered via kiosk for take-out. OMG... BEST Rainbow Roll I've ever eaten! It comes with krab, avocado, and cucumber roll, topped with salmon, yellowtail, avocado, escolar, and albacore. Fishes were very fresh and in good cuts. Sushi rice was soft and perfect in texture. Each bite melted in my mouth like no other. No roll has ever tasted so simple and divine. JUST SO YUMMY! Prices may be on the high end, but quality foods can't be compromised so it's all good. Iced Japanese Matcha unsweetened was refreshingly strong. Staff was superb. Service was good. Ambiance was neat. I'll be back and maybe next time, I'll try Omakase (it means I'LL LEAVE IT UP TO YOU (sushi chef). TO TRUST (in your hands)).

Food was not as advertised. This is the 3rd time and will not try again. The first time I got this box it had everything in the picture as advertised and this time it looked like this.Taste wasn't very good and not worth the money. Will probably never try them again. I would have been okay with what I got if the food had been good.

First time here and it was the best chirashi bowl I've ever had! Look for the spiral staircase across of the to go window.

The Ultimate underground Tokyo style sushi experience you will ever find in this county. It stays true to the quality and presentation just like their first location. The pictures speak for themselves and my tastebuds definitely say it was a certified Mouthgasm! The atmosphere is lively with Paul Hardcastle slash Kool & Klean vibes flowing through the room. Our Itamae Tony took us through a magical journey of the most flavorful pieces with the perfect pacing. The Omakase is what we ordered and please excuse me if I didn't name all the fish but all I can say everything was on point down to their service. Reservations are highly recommended because this place is Jumping Off! And I'm so sure it will only grow by word of mouth. Lastly, If You are looking for Rolls this is not the place for you, sorry. But they do offer it if you order from the upstairs kiosk. That's my take, Peace...

    Omakase
    Anna H.

We did another omakase experience last night and had an excellent time. This restaurant really cares about craft and quality regarding sushi, and since they first opened they've made a lot of great improvements! We love how special each omakase bite is and how fresh everything tastes. Wait staff was super friendly and accommodating and we were pleased. They have seasonal fish offerings with omakase and a wide range of drinks and other items on their menu. The little space downstairs feels intimate and nice. 85 dollars gets you one of the better 13 course omakase you'll ever have! The fish is very high quality, the chef explained everything comes from around the world. We feel lucky to have this nearby.

Saw this place come up on IG and wanted to give it a try and glad that I did! It's accessible through an underground staircase in the Redlands Public Market so definitely an interesting entrance. Got the 13 pc Omakase and was wowed! Excellent sushi/ngiri variety and so many unique and interesting flavors. The fish was all fresh and delicious. Excellent tuna, albacore, shrimp, and handrolls. We topped it off with a mango cheesecake slice which was awesome as well. It was busy, so try to make reservations. Our chef was friendly and informative. Service was solid but it did seem a bit understaffed and not super organized, it wasn't a big issue though. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has a traditional feel. Definitely a gem and a good omakase value as well for $85!

So, of course, I look on Yelp and came across Nko Niko sushi, which is regarded as one of the best sushi spots in Redlands. I actually went as far as double checking on reddit and the votes were definitely in! This place seemed legit so I had to try it. It's located in a shopping plaza so there is plenty of parking. There are several restaurants in the area, while Niko Niko is tucked away near the water fountains out front. As I arrived, they quickly sat me at the bar area and my typical rainbow roll and I tried their snow cone roll. The rolls were so good and the fish was fresh! I loved the sweet sauce that was added to the snow cone roll. After about 20 mins, the chef, who's name is Yaser, started asking me what my favorite fish is and why I like it. I told him Albacore and he instantly makes me some concoction with ponzu sauce which was fire. He then asked me if I like salmon and I told him yes and he makes me a seared salmon roll with orange sauce and pepper. By this time I'm stuffed but enjoying this experience. He made going to a sushi restaurant interesting again like when I first tried sushi. We start talking about Japan and he ask me if I ever had salmon skin. I tell him absolutely not and that when I bake salmon I usually take the skin off. He then tells me that I HAVE to try a salmon skin handroll so I figured I should just go with it. My mind was blown!! I actually like salmon skin lol. It was so good! Overall, I had an amazing experience at Niko Niko and Chef Yaser. I left him a generous tip for the experience and he changed the way I will forever dine at a sushi bar now. If you're in the area, please stop at Niko for some fresh tasty sushi and an excellent sushi experience with sushi chef's that know what they're doing. OOOOO 5 out of 5 Afros

I sensed something exciting was going to happen -- but relying entirely on word of mouth. Flash-forward to early 2026, where readers of the local weekly paper named this the Best Sushi of Redlands. I was so excited, and as my visit last week demonstrates -- things have only improved. KYO SUSHI was packed at 5PM on a Tuesday. Not only slammed, but standing room only. I don't know what happened but I'm so happy for them. Two subtle changes have happened and I'm all for them. A LOCAL NEWS channel sharing dreadful stories on the TV has been swapped for hi-def reels of lovely Asian spots, making our escape from the crazy world we live in complete. As an extra touch, we are now treated to soothing jazz, which helps in a room with so many happy customers. A special shout out to Sia, who greets regulars like family and will help you get exactly what you need. Hi to Wendy and the new young lady, all keeping a close eye on customer happiness. I believe KYO is on the brink of having outgrown this location, but a lease is likely keeping them there for a while. It's a shame they can't move next door into the old Von's location -- lol -- because what a place that would be. Enough room in their to farm the fish. Pro Tip -- try the Megan Fox roll!

Kyo Sushi was okay. I may have gone in with higher expectations because of the 4.7 rating on Yelp,…read morebut overall it felt a little overhyped. The roll presentation was very good, and visually the food looked great. The plates came out clean, colorful, and nicely arranged. Flavor-wise though, the rolls were fairly bland. The house mayo tasted like regular mayo, which isn't necessarily bad, but I guess I was expecting something with a little more going on, maybe closer to a spicy mayo or some kind of signature sauce. We also ordered a Philly roll, but were brought the Philly "Pro" instead. The Pro is deep fried, which I wasn't expecting, and I took a bite without realizing how hot it was and almost burned my mouth. I did mention that "Philly roll" and "Philly Pro" are close enough in name that I could see wrong orders happening pretty easily. Service was direct and decent. Nothing bad, just more to-the-point than warm or memorable. I'd probably give this place another shot, because it seemed like we may have gotten caught in a rush all at once. Not terrible by any means, and the presentation was definitely a strong point, but it wasn't quite the standout experience I was expecting.

For a Saturday at 4:30pm, we were seated and waited on immediately. The menu was expansive and I was surprised with the amount of vegetarian options for a Chinese restaurant. Our server was helpful in suggesting various fish options and knew their wait times. Some notable dishes were the sizzling beef with black pepper, beef scallion rolls, honey walnut chicken, mapo tofu, and fried chicken. The dishes that could be improved for flavor were the vegetarian steamed dumplings, steamed whole fish, and beef chow fun. We probably ordered around 8-10 plates (all dishes came with rice) and many arrived at the same time. The prices were very reasonable for the portions and it was just enough for everyone. Since we had a birthday celebrant, they were able to put our personal cake in the fridge. Our server provided a complimentary matcha cheesecake and candle towards the end of our meal. His robot server sidekick also sang happy birthday! I did feel like they were understaffed because the lobby hostess had to find the server for me several times when I asked for our cake and the check. Overall, it's a great place for large groups and celebrations.
