This place changed to a Japanese restaurant back in 2001. I was working nearby at the time and remember coming here. It's been years since I came back and glad I did. First thing I noticed were 2 Japanese ladies eating inside. Good sign! Was clean, plenty of seating, liked the solid granite tables. The "new" owner is this young guy who bought the place 3 years ago when the previous owner retired. He was working hard as the only waiter and 2 chefs in the back and bar. For lunch, i had the 12-pc sashimi (all fish) for $20...did I say 11 pieces?!? Man it was totemo Oishikatta!!! Probably some of the best sashimi I've had outside of Tokyo. Even my Japanese Nihonjin partner agreed it was very good (and she's a picky Japanese eater!). I liked that it was all fish cuts so I didn't have to sub or ask for sub for seafood I don't eat (bottom-dwellers, scavenger seafood). Shihoko-san had the salmon bento box and it was also very tasty. Of course we had to have the edamame appetizer. Overall excellent and we plan to be back! Glad it's nice and local here in Redlands. read more

Bae lives in Redlands, I live in L.A., we've been here a couple times now, once in 2019 and then this past weekend. We sat at the bar this time and had a great time. Last time we sat at a table and we think we definitely prefer the bar, as the dining room gets full on the weekend and can be on the loud side. Sitting at the bar was serene, the way I prefer to eat sushi. We had a couple of hot sakes, the Crash, the Firecracker and split the Shooting Star. All of them were so delicious and beautifully presented. Our waitress was attentive and efficient, and the sushi chef was great, as he took our order. We shall be adding this to our rotation for sure! Bae looks forward to watching the Dodgers after work (go Shohei and Yoshinobu!) at the bar with some sushi this upcoming season. read more

Likes its name, Tokyo Restaurant, is unassuming, straight-forward restaurant, but they try to make you feel welcome. For Sushi, this is our work place's choice. The service is attentive. In our group we had a great diversity of diners and everyone was able to find something they enjoyed. As you can see from the interior pic and Sushi bar pic, this is a small restaurant. I have tended to go a bit before peak dining times to get a seat. I thought I'd take a pic of the Tempura Shrimp to illustrate their Tempura. The Tempura was incredibly light and airy. The butterflied shrimp were quite large. The batter and shrimp didn't have very much flavor in, and of itself. But that's what Ponzu, Soy and Wasabi are for. The other pic is of the Philadelphia Roll. Overall, this is a very mild roll. Inside this roll its: crab, avocado, cream cheese and on top Salmon. Again, the flavor is all about the sauces. The Redlands Roll is very similar to this roll but baked, and I found that roll to have more flavor. read more

A long standing sushi restaurant in Redlands. I came in on a Saturday evening and I was able to get seated right away. It definitely has a bit of an older vibe but I don't mind the authentic sushi restaurant feeling. I ordered the sashimi plate b and uni. The food came out relatively quickly. The sashimi was fresh and decently sized. One of my uni tasted a little off but the other tasted very fresh. The prices here are quite unbeatable. My total for the two items came out around $35. I am knocking off just one star because service was not the best in terms of water refills. My husband works in Redlands so once in a while, I come to visit him and every time, we always decide to eat at this establishment. We come here for several reasons. First of all, service is top-notch! There's a gentleman that works there every day we are there and he is so on top of it. He's so quick and very kind. Second, the food is sooooooo good. This place has legit sushi. And the price is not that bad. At other places, I feel like I pay double for not that good of sushi. And lastly; the vibe is chill. The best in Redlands sushi! Albacore King Roll, Double Double Roll, Love Roll, how we love you so! We have been devoted customers for decades; our children have grown up here. They even made up a roll just for our daughter and put it on the menu since she is so picky. Ask for the Mavnado roll (tamago, seaweed paper, rice, deep fried with eel sauce, and spicy mayo). They also have marble drinks, wonderful hot tea, and delicious teriyaki. Lunchtime bento boxes are also always a hit because their tempura is so light and delicious - the broccoli is the best. I am gluten intolerant and I tried this place because I searched for local sushi and this place had a gluten free option on it. The server was really helpful going over the menu with me. And the krab they use doesn't have gluten! What a relief. This is the first California roll I've been able to have in years since my gluten issue started. Ordered everything with no sauce. Went here for lunch this past weekend. Service was good. The young lady managed to get orders, serve, do the take-outs, cashier, and take care of the customers in the restaurant and in the sushi bar! Impressive! Not much customers but she was courteous and always had a smile on her face. I ordered the bento box beef and hubby did the salmon salad (bit small for $16). We shared the baked sushi which I truly enjoyed! The beef in my bento box was cut into pieces but still tough to chew! That's why it's 4 stars.
