If you need to reschedule your reservation for any reason... how dare you. I made reservations in January for the 2nd weekend in April. Last week I called to confirm dietary restrictions. Today, I emailed in to reschedule as my dad was hospitalized and Im flying to Colorado. The owner basically told me get lost and when i replied for clarification he didn't answer. Apparently, this behavior is the norm for the guy. UPDATE: The owner replied to my review with lies. We've been in contact a total of 3 times. 1) when i made the reservation 2) when I called about a dietary restriction And 3) when I contacted them 46 hours before my reservation. They never reached out to confirm my reservation after they approved it (manually, my email) and a deposit was not mentioned. If I needed a deposit, why wouldn't they ask for it in the reservation approval? Why not ask for it when I called them 10 days before my reservation? My guess is that the owner thinks people will have so much fun smashing plates after the food that they will call it a "cultural experience." But, I have lived & travelled internationally many times and this is a ridiculous RIP OFF. The servers bring the food to the table in a few "courses" - each time on one shareable plate. There were just the two of us at my table, so we split everything evenly and each got exactly this: 1 small salad, 2 pieces of bread, 1 slice of baked eggplant, 1 tiny piece of spinach pie, 1 baked chicken leg, 1 scoop of moussaka, 1 sliver of chocolate cake, and wine. We were charged $103/a person. With tip, I spent almost $130 for my meal, and left still hungry! I was expecting, and frankly paid for: steak, shrimp, and/or fish. But a measly chicken leg?! My girlfriend and I came to Opa last weekend to celebrate our anniversary. This wasn't a restaurant... it was an experience!! From the moment we stepped into the building, we were treated like family. Not to mention feeling like we were whisked away to Greece for the night. It is hard to find an honest to goodness Greek restaurant, and who would have ever thought that I would find one in Chattanooga, Tennessee! Opa is a little gem hidden in Chattanooga's downtown area. It is easy to miss as it looks more like a house on the outside than a restaurant. We were greeted and serves by the owner. He bring you what he wants, you don't get to tell him what you want to eat, and you know what? He knows best! I am not too fond of lamb, but he told me I would be having some, and it was so amazing! 5/25/2019- Passed by on our way to our Airbnb for two days and decided to stop by. Mainly because we saw a nice outdoor deck. We came in for lunch and were greeted by a young girl. She asked us where we wanted to sit. We said, we wanted to sit in the outdoor space upstairs. She told us to go ahead and she would be right with us. We walked through the restaurant to the upstairs area. When we got there it wasn't what I had seen from the street. Apparently what I saw was the patio for the restaurant next door. They do have an outside but it's just bare, no tables, and cement chairs. We went back in the restaurant and sat towards the front. The restaurant itself transports you to a Greece island café. We were waiting for menus and waters. The young girl brought us waters and said the menu today was a la carte. She said the dish was chicken, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, green beans with pita bread. It sounded very good so we said "sure". We ordered a glass of their white wine. At first, she brought out a big plate of Hummus, tomato, parsley olives, tzatziki, olives, and spanakopita served with fresh homemade pita bread. We did not know this was going to be served but were very happy it did. It was absolutely delicious! Next was the Chicken dish. The dish was huge, plenty of food is served here. The chicken was tender and everything was so flavorful. After the main dish, they brought out chocolate cake with baklava on top. Everyone around us was raving about it. We were pretty full so we said we would not partake in the cake. When the bill arrived, my boyfriend asked if they could adjust the bill since we did not eat or take the cake with us. After a little while, another girl came by the table and said that management said no. We just paid the bill and left. This place would get 5 starts for the food alone. But, as visitors, we were not fully explained the concept of the restaurant. Also, the lack of service was just awful. I think it was just the two girls for the entire restaurant. Waited 10 min or so and received a pomegranate tea, which was super refreshing bc it was outside and out. About 20 min later we received a plate full of traditional appetizers. We literally cleaned the plate clean. Then red wine appeared and we were told it came from his village. It was nice, not sweet nor too dry. As we sipped the wine, the chef came and said he had one question, meat or no meat. Of course we said meat! By the time we almost finished our second glass of wine, our dinner was being served- another heaping plate of food! We were served another glass of the tea and given another carafe of wine. Since there was no menu, we didn't get to choose anything, at all. I did not like the pomegranate tea, I don't drink wine either, so I asked for a Coke and was told they didn't have that and wasn't told anything else that they did have and ended up just drinking water. We ended up leaving because I was getting nauseous and couldn't even eat anything after the starter plate and all I ate off of that was the Tiropita. We always make a reservation. It's always been full each time we have been. The food is delicious! There isn't a menu, but they offer both meat and vegetarian options. Between the salad plate, two different dinner plates, and dessert, someone would be hard pressed, extremely picky, or hard to please not to leave full. They offer a regular drink (ours was pomegranate and green tea) and all the red wine you can drink. It feels like a restaurant in Greece inside. Afterward dinner, there is entertainment. They begin playing Greek music, the owner begins getting people up from their table and shows them how to dance Greek style (easy steps), and then the real fun begins when everyone is up dancing and plates are brought out to begin breaking and stomping on (I recommend wearing sneakers or a good pair of regular shoes). If you are budget conscious, you will want to find out how much it will cost your party for the evening. We have always had a blast. It's food, drink, and entertainment!! I am obsessed! From the relaxing ambiance to the drool-worthy food and the friendly owner, I don't have a single complaint. Their service is unique in that the owner asks you if you have any dietary restrictions, and then picks out your meal for you. I was initially a little nervous about this aspect, but as soon as I tasted what he brought out, I was completely sold. I started out with the iced pomegranate, ginger, and lemon green tea, which was really refreshing. It wasn't sweetened, but that's the way that I prefer my tea, and I could really taste the pomegranate in it. We were then served a huge plate of hummus and tzatziki with homemade pita bread, and oh my goodness their pita bread is so good. The hummus also had a handful of high quality olives scattered around, and I really enjoyed them. For the entree, I was served the lamb which was perfectly tender and not gamey at all. I also got to try the chicken which was bursting with flavor and cooked perfectly. I had green beans and potatoes as my sides and they complemented the dish well. We finished the meal with a piece of chocolate cake which was the perfect way to end the meal. The final bill came out to be around 25 dollars, and it was completely worth it. We came in 15 mins before closing-- the place was empty, but the owner warmly greeted us and immediately served us this delicious drink concoction of green tea w/ pomegranate/ginger/lemon. We both said meat and he quickly whipped up a plate full of a variety of dishes: spanakopita, spinach salad, tomato cucumber feta salad, sautéed green beans, pita bread, and FALL OFF THE BONE chicken. (Literally the meat slid off the bone when picked up.) Even as he served us our giant plates of food he told us to save room for dessert. And sure enough, 10 mins into devouring our plates we were served deconstructed chocolate baklava. We left with our tummies stuffed and our hearts filled with warmth. The entire experience truly made it feel like we were dining in someone's home who was more than happy to feed us delicious food. When we checked out, the owner explained to us that he doesn't have a set menu because he gets fresh produce from the local farmers and he caters his menu towards the seasonal ingredients. If I could give zero stars I would've. I have been wanting to try this place for forever but COVID had other plans. I saw they were finally doing takeout so I suggested to my husband we pick up. So sad we did. Ordered an Opa plate and Greek salad, which should've been ~$28. Went in to pick up and was informed it'd be $42! I asked to clarify and was told again it was $42. But the attendant couldn't tell me how much a salad and the plate actually cost. He told me I didn't have to pay or take the food but I felt guilty doing that. So I paid. I get home to a old soggy Greek salad that was inedible except for the few fresh cherry tomatoes on top. The tzatziki was sour cream. No hummus. Overcooked potatoes and buttered noodles. On my birthday, I decided to go to this fabulous restaurant, but unfortunately reservations are made far in advance. My friend called to see if there was any possibility of a cancellation. Fortunately, the owner and chef answered the phone when we called, and invited us to join him for my birthday celebration. Wow... What a celebration! The atmosphere made me feel as though I was actually in Athens, Greece.... One of my most favorite places to visit! Michael, the owner and chef is what makes this establishment so successful! His aura is so special in this restaurant that it makes everyone want to be here. It is very warm and welcoming. I was so thrilled that I had chosen this restaurant for my birthday celebration..., and I was truly more excited that Michael accommodated us!! The food and wine are both absolutely phenomenal! Listen....this is the best Greek food in Chattanooga, okay? I've been to Acropolis, Tazikis, and Kabob-ster; Opa is drastically better and different from the rest. I ate lunch here today with two friends and had a wonderful time. The food is fantastic! I ordered spanakopita and a lamb gyro. To my surprise, he first brought a plate with hummus, yogurt sauce, grape leaves and fresh pita to the table. We didn't order it, but it was a nice appetizer. I've never been to a Greek restaurant whose grape leaves I liked. I usually can't stand them, but I couldn't stop eating the ones here. I don't know what sort of sorcery he's pulling back there in the kitchen, but they are delicious! Then he brought the spanakopita. I love spanakopita, particularly because I like the salty feta cheese in the dish which is usually the prominent flavor. This spanakopita had feta in it, but I could really taste the spinach. I've never had spanakopita like that before and quite frankly, I prefer this version. The flavors were well balanced; nothing screamed over anything else. Next came the gyro which has lamb meat (marinated for two days!) and the usual other fixings (red onion, tomato, etc.). It came with a small side of yogurt sauce, which I thought wasn't going to be enough. I was going to ask for more, but I'm glad I didn't. It was a nice surprise now and again to have a bite with yogurt sauce in it instead of the gyro dripping with the sauce, as it does at other places. I was really able to enjoy the flavor of the meat and the soft, warm pita bread. (By the way, his yogurt sauce is really good as well. It's a little thicker than the more "runny" sauces at other places, and it's flavorful). We thought we were finished, but then he brought each of us a slice of chocolate cake. I realize none of you reading this knows me personally, but let me just say, I don't have a sweet tooth. I get savory food cravings and rarely sweet food cravings, so cake isn't something I salivate over. This cake, however, was so moist and chocolatey. I don't know what he did to it, but if you like chocolate cake, please get a slice from Opa! The place is small (I'd say it seats about 10-15 people inside, and there is seating outside as well) but it makes for a nice cozy meal. The decor is lovely and the place is clean. Michael, the owner, is an absolute doll. He's very personable and passionate about his food; I loved talking to him! I left there with a slice of baklava that I haven't tried yet. Nice people, fun atmosphere, decent food. Like everyone else, we showed up (at lunchtime) and things started arriving at our table after quick confirmation that neither of us is vegetarian. The servers/proprietors were fawning over my little guy and made sure he had a high chair, soft food (potatoes) to eat, etc. Very sweet. Spanakopita arrived along with plastic cups of pomegranate "tea". The appetizer was just alright; no complaints but not wowed either. Next, Styrofoam plates arrived heaped with boiled seasoned potatoes, yogurt sauce, pita bread, salad with a couple olives and sprinkle of feta, and roasted lamb and chicken (more chicken than lamb). The highlights of the plate were gorgeous ripe, red summer tomatoes, fresh spinach greens and the rich yogurt sauce. The produce was fresh and tasty. There was also a garlicky toum that I mostly avoided lest we have a very long, smelly trip back to Asheville. Oddly, the same spanakopita was on the lunch plate. The meats were underwhelming - the chicken was stringy and dry, and the lamb was likewise a bit overcooked and underseasoned. With yogurt sauce everything was edible. The pita did not taste homemade, and the potatoes were fairly basic. The pita would have been better untoasted as the edges were a touch tough. I did like the simple vinaigrette on the salad and wish there had been the option to order lunch a la carte. Dessert was a crowd-pleaser moist chocolate cake with chocolate chips, fudge icing, and phyllo strips - probably Duncan Hines, but who can really blame them? As the reviews show, most people find it irresistible (count me out #sorrynotsorry). It's hard to imagine a cuter place to have lunch and escape to "Greece" for a few hours. This restaurant holds one of the most unique dining experiences in Chattanooga. Instead of ordering off a menu, when you arrive, the owner gives you a sample plate of a few traditional dishes. Then, 15 minutes after you are seated and served pomegranate tea, the waiter brings out a plate of beautifully-plated and tasty food. I really enjoyed the experience of this restaurant, but a few cons are the atmosphere and the lack of pricing. The atmosphere (including the seating) was a bit odd and choppy, and although the meals (including an appetizer, meal, and dessert) were very reasonable at $20, I wish I would have known the price range in advance. Also, the waiter seemed to be a bit angry when my friend did not eat all of the appetizer, questioning "did you not like this? Why did you not like it? It's traditional Greek holiday food". These cons were cancelled out by the incredible food and an untraditional dining experience not usually attained in the Chattanooga area. read more
