Morons. Literally. I have apple care plus and these guys claim they have to charge me if my iPhone has software issue. Further when I first came in guy told me they couldn't determine if it was hardware issue. I left called Apple Care, got supervisor on phone told him my issues and said that's 100% not accurate. They have equipment and ability to determine if it's a hardware issue. I called Onyx back, spoke to original guy that helped me in store, he then spoke to manager and said in fact they could run tests to see if it was hardware issue but that if it wasn't hardware and software they'd charge me full price to fix despite me having AppleCare+. I came here because I wanted to get a screen repair on my iPad Air. this place was licensed for AppleCare so I brought it here thinking they would be able to replace the screen. With iPads unfortunately, they still have to mail your iPad off to Apple. This was not explaining to me so the reps at Onyx were very forthcoming with the information as far as AppleCare and Apple policy. The location is clean is very quiet. It's not too much going on. I don't believe they have public bathrooms but it's very open and aesthetically pleasing if you will. everyone seems knowledgeable they do other repairs so I most likely will be bringing my laptop here next for them to work on. It isn't a Mac but they do other computer repairs. I drop my iPad off the Tuesday before Christmas and I got it back the Thursday before New Year's so the turnaround was impeccable. They caught me immediately left me a voicemail. Let me know how much the co-pay was on my AppleCare, and everything was taken care of. You would think with AppleCare other locations like Best Buy or geek squad would be knowledgeable. Went to Onyx in a panic! I had important work to do and the screen on my MacBook Pro had gone black the evening before immediately preceding a scheduled presentation. I was able to make my presentation using my iPhone ...whew! However, there was work I desperately needed to do. Looked on the Internet for solutions ... found none that would help me. I went to Onyx the next morning when they opened. Charles was the technician who greeted me and took care of my issue. I paid to have the service expedited on this Thursday, as the normal support would have taken anywhere from 3 - 6 days, not including the weekend that was upon us! Charles saw that my computer was still under AppleCare. He ordered the part I needed and suggested that since I was there so early in the morning, it might come in the next day, which was Friday. I was a little nervous with the weekend staring me in the face. However, Charles called me early in the day on Friday and had my computer ready!!! When I went in to pick it up, he answered other questions for me and all I had to pay was for the expedite! I am truly a happy customer. BTW, I had used Onyx in the past and have been satisfied with their services. I highly recommend them! Charles is the greatest!!! read more

Computer troubles, whether affecting a beloved gaming rig or a vital work computer, are some of the most unpleasant technology troubles one can have. It is for this reason that I was so appreciative of the friendly assistance and exceptional service offered by Onyx Consulting. Immediately upon arrival, I was greeted by the general manager, who listened attentively as I explained my issues and made recommendations and suggestions based on what I had told him. He gave his frank assessment and made it very clear what the likely timeline and potential costs or issues for the repair might be. He was completely upfront and honest from start to finish. I was very happy to learn that Onyx offers an expedited service fee, in exchange for which one is guaranteed that a technician will begin diagnosing the computer within two hours, although it usually happens even faster: I was fortunate enough to have a technician be able to look at my computer within about 10 minutes. This service only means that diagnostic work will begin as soon as possible, but it was well worth the cost to have an idea of what the problem was as soon as possible. The technician who handled my actual evaluation and repair was exceptional. He kept me informed on every step of the process and ensured that I was aware of the work he was doing. He was fastidious and attentive to every detail, ensuring that he knew exactly what problems I was having so that he could fix them. He also offered suggestions for the future and things to keep in mind moving forward. By bringing my computer in early in the morning and taking advantage of the expedited diagnostic fee, I was actually able to get my computer back that same day. Obviously this sort of timely turn around isn't possible for all problems, but I was extremely impressed by the efficiency displayed by Onyx and the quality of the work they did. I highly recommend Onyx Consulting for all of your PC or Mac needs. My issue was for a personal device, but if I needed regular computer service as a business owner, I would highly consider Onyx Consulting. I'm so glad to know there's a place close by to get Apple support and service! I had a backlighting issue with my MacBook (which was covered by an Apple Service Program) and I would usually just take it to a Genius Bar at an Apple Store but it's a bit far from me and inconvenient. I've never tried an Apple Authorized Service Provider because I've always trusted the service at Apple Stores, so I took a risk with this. I was quite impressed by Onyx! My main impression was the quick turnaround time. I dropped off my MacBook on Friday, they ordered the new part, got it in on Monday and finished the repair by Monday afternoon! I honestly thought I'd be without my computer for several days. And the tech did call to update me on timing and expectations. I will certainly go back there. I don't know however if Onyx does free diagnoses and help like they do at a Genius Bar. read more

I'm never taking my tech anywhere else! I had a great experience with Onyx. I had spilled water all over my laptop and was incredibly stressed all day, but the staff member who helped me (I think his name is Jake) was so helpful and patient in answering all my questions. He looked at my laptop and checked to see if my data had been corrupted, then advised me for what the best course of action would be. He was transparent about the costs of replacing/fixing and even gave me some good recommendations for where to buy a new laptop. This business is not accessible to anyone who cannot climb steep stairs; in fact, it is way out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Both times I have gone there, I have brought this issue to their attention, but they seemed uninterested and no improvements were made between my first visit and my second visit yesterday (several years after my first visit). In fact, when I went there yesterday I noted that their new social distancing waiting area has seating of inappropriately low and high heights -- nothing at a standard, ADA compliant height. The ADA was passed more than 25 years ago. Don't you think it is time to at least TRY to come into compliance? read more

In the category of computer repair services, I've found no better than Onyx. We've used them mostly for my wife's Apple products but now also to repair my PC. They always give us the straight skinny. If they're busy, they tell us that and then provide an estimate for when they can get to our machine. If the machine is toast, they tell us that, too, before spending much of our money. Friendly people; easy to talk to, even if you're not very computer literate. With the latest repair, I actually thought my PC was toast but after a not very long investigation by the Onyx tech, the repair cost was fairly minimal and was completely covered by the initial charge for looking into the problem, except for parts. Convenient, at least for us Eastside folk. Easy parking in front. Highly recommended. read more

2 yrs ago, I could not power up my 5 yr old MacBook Pro. Apple's Genius Bar suggested that it was a mechanical issue. Found Onyx as authorized 3rd party repair shop. They fixed the problem within 2 biz days (they were busy for good reason) and suggested that I decline the next OS update since my laptop speed could not handle it. Thanks to them I was able to recover my old files and transfer to a new MacBook. Would return to them if I have future Apple product issues read more

I have been using Onyx since 2011 and they have always done a good job and been very honest and transparent about the issue with my laptops. I recently visited Onyx because my mac was seeming to boot up but the screen remained black. Jenni waited on me and after I told her the issue she said give me a min to look at at and 5 min later came back and said it was just the circuit, "sometimes you have to rest it and I reset the circuit and now its working." I'm thinking it did not need an expensive LCD as I thought it may need. I said, thank you so much and what do I owe you. She said you owe nothing. This is why these people won my confidence years ago and I still go to them today. And know that when they say something is wrong or there is a major problem with your computer, trust them, there is. These guys have lost a customer. I've gone there a few times for a desktop ruined by a power surge and a few other other hardware issues. They do what's expected, but definitely aren't cheap. The reason I'm done going there is their bad business practices. I had a harddrive failure where I couldn't recover my data. My data was about 150,000 digital photographs (I am a photographer) and they were going to charge me $50 to see if they could recover it and then refer me to their Atlanta partner Cherry Systems..."the only data recovery place with a clean room". Their charge: $1400. I was devastated...out of budget. First off, having them try for $50 is burning $50...the other place would charge $50 for the same thing, but that would go to the recovery, so don't get double-billed. Second, and most importantly, these guys lied to my face. I asked them if there was a cheaper alternative. I said I literally can't pay $1400 and I'd have to wait months to save to recover needed files or take it apart myself. They said there was nothing in Atlanta except their partner, Cherry Systems. I asked multiple people in the store who had been there for years, none of them new to the store. What each stated was not true. The place I took it to, Data Savers LLC near Mercer University told me that they used to have a relationship with Onyx but the owners had a falling out. Data Savers fixed my drive for only $650 (less than half) in two days...and IN A CLEAN ROOM. Onyx let's the politics of their relationships with local businesses trump their frequent customers even when they can't go with their partner. Screw that! Cost me nearly a grand because of some spat? Good bye Onyx. read more

The Apple stores contract out to Onyx Consulting for most of their repair needs. However, you have to go directly to Onyx if you want to get a new, upgraded hard drive and NOT void your warranty. So I skipped 2 trips (one with a middle man) and headed straight over to Onyx in Decatur. I was sure that I was going to be without my computer for days because they said they were fairly busy when I called to see if I needed an appointment. "We don't take appointments. Come on by and drop your stuff off." So I said, Okay! And prepared to be ansty for days without my shiny, pretty MacBook. 4 - 5 hours later I get a phone call. "Ma'am, you're computer is ready whenever you can get it." I got there about 5 minutes before they closed, apologized profusely for not getting there at a decent time, and was greeted with the nicest closing demeaner possible. Lot's of "no problems" and "thank you for coming to Onyx." Not to mention they took a coupon that I found at Dancing Goats for $10 off. I SHOULD be headed back there this weekend, but I'll probably forget. Thank goodness for these guys! **They aren't just Apple guys... fyi. So if you have a PC, they can most likely help you. I suspect Onyx would rather not work on older Mac computers. I asked for a quote on replacing the keyboard on a 2010 15" Macbook Pro, and said they could even use a used keyboard already in its top, which greatly reduces labor of unscrewing many teeny screws and re-screwing them. (The part typically runs $60) They quoted me a price of $420-$475, more than what the laptop is worth, and THREE TIMES higher than a just -as- highly rated competitors quote, and almost EIGHT times higher than my lowest quote, from an unrated company. Perhaps they prefer just to deal with easier and more lucrative cell phones? read more

Thought my G5 was dead due to logic board issues, however for $40 found out differently. Onyx was prompt and easily identified the issue was a crashed drive. One qualm: I was able to revive the drive without going through the suggested data recovery specialist using a software solution. And my computer is experiencing kernel panics, likely due to another hardware issue that Onyx wasn't able to identify. So while I'd like to give them 5 stars, the fact I was able to recover the drive myself and still may have a problematic component (video card/pci-x) that they weren't able to identify, I can't really do that. But, being someone who is fairly familiar with repairing/modding his own mac and near completing apple care technician certification - I represent a small subset of customers who can remedy some of their own issues. They certainly have saved me a trip to the Apple Store, probably a couple of grand on a new machine, and were able to isolate the issue when I couldn't so they still are good in my book. read more

Onyx saved my wife's term paper when her drive failed 12 hours before deadline. We willingly paid a rush fee, but the prices in general are amazingly good. I've been in IT for over ten years and I was astonished at their low rates. Absolutely not wheelchair accessible. But when we walked in, she on crutches, the employees walked downstairs and conducted all of our business there in the lobby. Top marks for courtesy! read more

OK, this is my second review for Onyx. My Chromebook recently died and I brought it in to Onyx to see if they could repair it. They looked at it, diagnosed the problem, and said I would probably SAVE money if I contacted HP to see if I could have it repaired. Luckily, HP would repair it for free due to lots of people having the same problem I was having. I saved $250! Onyx could have easily said, "We'll repair it" and never suggested calling HP. I trust Onyx so much that I wanted to bring it to them first. They definitely will have my business again in the future if/when I need repairs. read more

Since this location is right down the street from my office, I called to confirm that they could help, and the guy that I spoke with was incredibly rude. Without going into the back & forth of our conversation, I ultimately asked him, "So you won't help me with a battery replacement?" and he replied, "Yeah". The great thing about Onyx is that if you're willing to pay a rush fee, you can have someone look at our computer right away, likely before you'd even get an appointment at the Apple Store. If your repair is covered under your warranty, you'll still need to pay the rush fee, but if you're in a time sensitive situation, it's well worth it. My computer was actually misdiagnosed at first (probably because it was working intermittently). When I went to pick it up, they turned on the computer to show me, and the error occurred once again. I had to leave it there for another night (with a deadline looming -- but hey, that was my fault for not backing up often enough), but they did fix the problem (hardware issue that was Apple's fault) by the next day. If I had another time-sensitive problem, I'd definitely go back to Onyx over the Apple Store. read more

This place is great. They were the only ones in the city who would even look at my 2006 MacBook and got it running well. They also will order you anything you want from Mac and it comes in super fast. When I finally got sick of my tiny, annoying MacBook Air, I went in to see them and they helped me choose the right new computer. No crowded showrooms, no bright lights, just helpful advice and good service. If you need a new Mac, this is the best place to go if you find yourself unable to buy a computer in a sales-tax free state. They offer lots of extras for buying through them when you need technical support. Their prices are the same as the Mac store, and you are supporting local business. read more

These guys are amazing. I had an issue with my Imac space bar and originally we thought that the keyboard would have to be replaced which can be quite pricey. They were able to fix it much more affordably then originally thought. On top of this, I had my toddler with me who was being active and busy and they were so kind to him, even interacting as he chatted away and let him watch the repair. They were seriously so nice. Here's my experience (seriously terrible) working with Onyx in Decatur. This is why I am rating them 1 star. I would rate less but Yelp won't let me do less than one star. Oh and this is my very first Yelp review. I don't like giving bad reviews but they are really that bad. Summary: No one from Onyx was helpful, and they were very rude giving off a pretentious vibe. Onyx lacks in good communication, customer service and quality control skills. They returned my undamaged brand new $5K Macbook Pro to me damaged and took no responsibility for the damage and actually had 3 techs come over and blame me, the customer, for their error. I ended up taking the machine to Apple and they gladly covered the damages that Onyx overlooked and took no responsibility for. All evidence on the damage pointed towards the tech who handled the computer during or after the fix i.e. Apple or Onyx. I personally think that Onyx did something to the computer and didn't want to own up to Apple for it. Explanation: I brought my brand new Macbook Pro in for a fix for a faulty Apple part. The screen needed to be replaced so they sent it off to Apple. They assessed the computer for any physical damage before they sent it off. None. The computer was in pristine shape. Right out of the box. I got a call a few days later saying the computer was ready for pickup, then the tech said "oh wait that's not the right computer, your computer is not ready for pickup." Ok, nevermind. So I waited a few more days...nothing....a few more days...still nothing. I finally called Onyx a week later and asked if my computer was done and that I hadn't heard from anyone. They said it was ready and had been ready for a week...wow! No call from onyx. No apology for not communicating. Time is money. A few days after I picked it up I noticed a small divot in the new screen as well as physical damage to the body of the computer where the tech would have used his tools to take the screen off for the repair. I email Onyx and tell them about the damages with pictures, I heard back from a tech who pretentiously said they didn't think it would be covered but that they'll reach out to Apple and try to work it out. 4 days later no response from Onyx. So I drive to Onyx and talk face to face with them about the damage only to have 3 techs come out treat me like I'm some kid off the street trying to hustle them for a free fix for my recently damaged computer. It was unbelievable to not have any of them apologize for any inconvenience that they caused me and not take my side on the damages. All 3 techs (including one of the managers) huddled around me and the computer and gave off this pretentious vibe as they cast the blame on me and begrudgingly gave me an 800 number to Apple that I should call...wow, thanks Onyx for the 800#. Super helpful. (After the manager gave me the 800# he didn't even wait for my response he rudely just walked away. I was left alone at the counter. They were basically telling me to F#@% Off ) They said the damages should have been noticed earlier if I was going to get them fixed. Makes a little bit of sense but remember when my laptop was sitting on the shelf for about a week when no one called me. That was the time between the fix from Apple and the delivery to the customer which they failed at reaching out to me and have now factored that into the time frame for when I noticed the damages. But that's besides the point. I am a professional. I have this $5K new laptop that was dropped off in pristine shape and given back to me damaged. Not cool Onyx. Own up to your mistakes. Onyx is terrible when it comes to customer service and I honestly cannot speak for their repairs since they didn't work on the mac but I can speak for their quality control since it was returned to me damaged. I will not be bringing any of my computer equipment to Onyx in the future and will recommend other options to my employees and other professionals who work with macs or any other types of computers. As a recent customer I should never have been treated like I was and that I did something wrong and that I damaged my machine and that I was trying to get a free fix on my broken mac. That is 100% ridiculous. No one from Onyx was helpful. Apple on the other hand has great customer service and has met all my needs as a customer who was returned a damaged device through Onyx. They have granted me a fix on my machine because they owned up to the fact that the damage came from them/Onyx and not from me. They were not accusing me of trying to hustle them for a free fix as Onyx did and they noticed that the damage was obviously related to the screen fix because of it's location on the Macbook Pro. Apple said they did not want me to go through Onyx again. They told me to go to the Apple Store. It's very obvious guys. Please get it together! read more

These guys are awesome! My iMac decided that it would like to beep instead of working. So instead of lugging it to the Apple store in the mall, I brought it to Onyx. The only people other than Apple that would not void the Apple care warranty.Tuesday afternoon, I checked my computer in with Tom, who explained it could be one of two things but give them 2 days to get it on the bench. I got a call the very next day explaining the issue and would you believe it was ready by Thursday for pick up. Richard kept me in the loop with status updates. About a month ago, my little expensive MacBook Air stopped turning on, so before taking it to Onyx, I dropped it off at another Apple Certified repair spot, and they returned it to me without an invoice and told me it was a hopeless cause. Top-notch service. My Mac was in a never-ending re-start cycle when I installed a new Operating System. I brought it in and the person at the front desk tried various things out for 15-20 minutes, eventually solving the issue. They easily could've taken the computer in back and added to the queue. Instead, they were able to graciously take care of everything while I waited. Look, when a place goes out of its way to repair your computer on-the-spot, graciously and with no hassles, you can't ask more than that. Kudos to Onyx! Highly recommended. read more

I took my aging Mac Laptop to Onyx when it stopped charging. Onyx was recommended by Apple. They charged me $250 and I had to come back in a week. Within 30 days of picking up my laptop it stopped charging again. I went back to Onyx and they said there records showed I had not paid for the repair when I picked it up, which was shocking, insulting and untrue. Next they fixed it again, said they would not warrant it and it stopped charging within two weeks. This was a very disappointing experience and I would never take anything to them to be fixed again. read more
