I love babka. I think it's one of the greatest things about living in NY (I'm from the midwest, which is deprived of babka). I would consider myself a babka fanatic. This place tops the list of every babka ever known to me and maybe every baked good. We happened to Yelp it back in February when we were at Peter Luger's and knew we were close to the Hasidic part of Williamsburg. Not many reviews but gave it a try. We couldn't stop raving about it, ate basically the whole half loaf in 2 days (for two of us) and couldn't stop wanting to go back. Today we went back. They had "heavy chocolate" or "heavy heavy heavy chocolate". We got 3lbs worth (for 3 people and to save some). What a great decision. It was so delicious. Gooey, soft, slightly undercooked and heavenly. We have driven there (easy street parking) but I don't think it's really close to a subway (but maybe the long walk would help burn off some of the babka). It's a very religious neighborhood and if you're not Hasidic, you will feel out of place, but it's not unfriendly. I would not walk around wearing a mini-skirt or skimpy tank top, though, out of respect. Also of note - closed in the summer, on Sabbath (Friday afternoon/Saturday) and Jewish holidays. Go early in the day because it's possible they will run out. I hope to keep this place somewhat of a secret for selfish reasons. read more

When it comes to family get togethers with my family, I supply the desserts. I'm always on the hunt for something new or different. Before I discovered a bakery in Manhattan a few years ago, I researched online for the best bakery and all resources pointed me to Brooklyn. I went to 3 traditional Jewish bakeries to pick up babka's to go. The first spot I picked up a loaf that I could easily hold in one hand; 2nd spot I could easily put in my pocket .. I had to walk awhile before reaching the 3rd spot and I was so weary I just wanted to order, pay and trek back to Manhattan. The first 2 spots were not memorable although the service at the 2nd spot was dismissive when I asked for babka .. This 3rd spot however , Oneg, was a tiny store with an older gentleman at the front who was very helpful and patient with me. He asked if I wanted a slice or the whole babka. And he asked if I wanted regular or extra chocolate. I was in such a rush I told him I would take both kinds and wanted the whole thing. He yelled [the order?] to someone in the back and out comes this older woman carrying what looked like boulders .. the babka's here are huge and hefty. Well you know what- both were excellent and to this day, now that I've tried different establishments- the babka's here are my favorite - especially the extra chocolate. They cost a lot more too because of the size but they are so worth it. You can request a portion- they'll slice it for you. I'm actually glad I got the whole thing . Even though my commute back to Manhattan was a workout for my arms, this truly was an amazing experience. I had gone there before I started using/posting on yelp so don't have a picture to share. The shock of seeing how large the babka loaf was paralyzed my tongue and prevented me from telling the kind shopkeeper that I wanted to change my mind about buying an entire loaf. What I initially thought was that the babka was overly sweet but it grew on me over the next few days and probably will over the next few weeks. The outside of the babka is also coated with something crunchy and sweet (sugar maybe?) Anyway, if you enjoy ranking babka, then you have to give this one a try, or your list won't be complete. read more

One of the best Jewish bakeries we've ever been too! The serivce was super, we tried almost everthing in the self serve selections (best stuff in the store and tons of variety). You get a bag to pick what you like and buy it by the pound. Seems like the place has been there forever. Super fresh and flavorful, all Parve, so lactose and dairy free!. I can't bring myself to eat another Zabar's babka now. I'm ruined. There's no going back. I didn't even know babka could be this moist and rich and chocolate gooey. I knew not what my life was missing. Yes, Oneg Hamishe's babka might seem pricey ($19 compared to a $10 or $12 Green's babka or whatever). I am as cheap as they come, but this is worth every penny. Overpriced Jewish bakery but their products are top quality! I can't stay a week without my challah so this is the place I go when I am not in the mood to bake. They have mini challah as well. Perhaps babka and rugelach are not my type of pastry in general... maybe it's the dry and heavy dough or extremely sweet sort of chocolate spread that they put in it (to me it has nothing to do with how real chocolate tastes like...) The babka was overloaded with sugar for sure so only if you're a fan of that type of pastry give it a try. I think I will wait a couple years before trying any babka again. read more

The onion rolls are overstuffed with fried onions... they taste better than candy. The onion squares are sweet and spicy... couldn't stop eating them. Is there a rating higher than 5 stars? Love, love, love this place. Don't walk, run. Their baked goods are to die for. Enjoy. read more

Everything is good, especially the rum balls and the three-jam Linzer cookies, but I wasn't blown away. The sweet roll had a good, strong Vanilla flavor and was something I don't recall seeing before. The bakery closes for like three months during the summer, so be warned. read more

Very good babka. Got the 'light' one which still seemed very chocolate heavy to me! I also thought their other babka-like treat was very good - it's similar but flatter and less gooey and chocolatey (quite similar to Zucker Bakery's babka, which I love). read more

Awful customer service. I recently bought a few packages of Oneg's semi-sweet Kosher for Passover chocolate chips. Only I found out the hard way that they contained soy, which I am highly allergic to and must avoid. I called the bakery Tues April 3, 2012 at 12:35pm. Before I could even ask my question, a lady with a thick Yiddish accent said :"We're closed," and hung up on me. When I tried calling the week before (several times in the late morning during the work week), the phone kept ringing; no one ever picked up. Aside from the soybean allergy issue: as far as the taste, I didn't enjoy the chocolate chips, which had a sort of slimey texture when melted. Obviously, I have no intention of buying Oneg products again. read more

Make sure you buy the babka, its behind the counter and you say how much you want, and they cut you off a piece and weigh it. They also have something that looks more like a chocolate strudel, which doesn't have the height of the babka. read more
