The double chocolate babka is far and away the best I've ever had. It is moist and gooey on the outside and has a nice crisp on the outside. I'be ordered the full sized babka five or so times and it is consistently excellent. Other babkas do not compare in my opinion. Hands-down the best babka in NYC, which, by definition, means the best on the planet. Keep your fancy-shmancy butter-based babka--sometimes things are meant to be pareve. Try both the chocolate and double-chocolate and decide from there whether or not you have a favorite. In addition, the onion pastry is delicious, as are the doughnuts. They also have a nice selection of challah, including spelt. Oneg really IS a "heimishe bakery"; the staff is very pleasant. And incidentally, it's not a far walk from the Hewes St. station on the M--don't bother with Google's bizarre directions to get off at Marcy Ave. and take a bus from there. I've heard so much about Oneg's babka, that I finally took a detour to visit, and it was well worth the trip. I had one slice of the regular chocolate and one of the extra chocolate. I'm a huge chocolate lover, but in this instance, I think I actually preferred the regular babka, which already has so many intricate layers and is very rich on its own. The extra chocolate babka seemed to have more chocolate than bread, making it extra decadent and chewy (and sticky). Both were good, but the regular babka already has more chocolate than any other babka I've had, and I do want some bread/pastry, otherwise I might as well buy a good chocolate bar. Note that they sell by weight, and each slice looked manageable, but given how heavy and dense they are, there was plenty to go around and share with a friend or three, which is good since my two slices came out to about $20. read more

I've dreamed about coming here for weeks before my short visit to NYC - forget about visiting the Met, MOMA or DUMBO, Oneg was going to be the highlight of my trip and I was determined! Come hell or high water, I was going to get my hands on some chocolate babka (spoiler: I did). Upon entering, the warm and comforting smell of chocolate enveloped me, and to my utter delight, the entire back wall was lined with rows of fresh chocolate babka. The babka is made in long loaves and can be cut to your desired length. Warning, these dense loaves are sold by weight so the price can quickly add up. I purchased a chunk of dark babka and a chunk of regular babka. These 2 chunks were about the equivalent of one third to one half of a loaf and cost 40 USD. HOLY MOLY is this stuff worth every penny! While the regular one is fantastic, the dark one is definitely more chocolate than bread - made for chocolate lovers. This stuff is rich so a little bit goes a long way - my tip is to buy a chunk, portion it and freeze it for future consumption. The moment you enter the store, you can smell the amazing baked goods. Everyone is here for their chocolate babka. I made a mistake to come here on a Saturday when the store was closed the first time but I was determined to try their famous babka so I returned the following week. I got both the regular chocolate babka and the double chocolate babka, the double chocolate version is much thicker, almost shaped like a loaf of bread. It also weigh much more too (=more $$$). I love the rich dense chocolate and the chewiness of the double chocolate version but I found it way too sweet after a few bites, I took a closer look and noticed that there were layers of sugar within the babka. It would be perfect if they could skip the sugar for me. The texture was not as nice in the regular version but I found the sweetness to be just right. read more

I ordered mail order from these folks some Apricot Hamantaschen and they were prompt to package and ship as promised in a timely manner.They sent by Fed Ex and it arrived quickly.They charged a very fair price for product & shipping to their credit as well. The cookie was fair enough but unfortunately the filling has favor other than apricot that distracts :( For me its just not the taste I was looking for sadly compared to say William Greenberg's bakery filling which for my preference is superior and other old world bakery's turning out this iconic classic.The quality is perfectly satisfactory otherwise.The box is about to become a gift to my neighbor I am going to try their onion pockets as there are raves about those on a few sites. Came here today with my husband. We came to the Williamsburg area just for this bakery after seeing some of their photos on social media. The place was very small, and as soon as we walked in, the whole area was filled with the smell of fresh baked goods. We got the chocolate babka, chocolate donut with Boston cream filling, and chocolate croissant. There were so many different ones we wanted to try including the chocolate filled donut, cinnamon croissant, and onion bread. Chocolate babka had more chocolate than the bread... as you can see in the photo. The chocolate croissant had more babka textures than the regular croissant I was expecting, and the donut was very chewy and doughy on the bread part (my husband really liked it). Avoid the pastry straws. Chocolate rugelach was good. Pay by the weight. Chocolate babkas are very heavy. Err towards requesting a half or quarter loaf. But ultimately it was not as good as Bread's Bakery chocolate babkas. Even though I have a huge sweet tooth, it was more like a brownie or fudge than a bread roll with chocolate layers. Germaphobes, this place may not be for you. Customers put the smaller pastries in bags/plastic containers. I saw them use their bare hands. Also the staff was using their bare hands to move pastries from one tray to another. There was a glove box for customers and tongs but I didn't see anyone use them. read more

I admit Chocolate Babka makes my knees weak, and I've been meaning to venture to Williamsburg to buy Oneg Bakery's version after reading a Serious Eats article lauding it. Well I had a dinner with some friends in Brooklyn planned after work, so with a few hours to spare before dinner, I finally had a chance to visit Oneg Heimishe's Bakery. Even though I arrived late in the day (just after 5:00PM), the bakery still had the intoxicating smell of fresh baked goods. I could see so many delicious items for sale such as donuts, challah bread, cookies, various rye breads, but I quickly re-focused and spotted my objective: Chocolate Babka. This Chocolate Babka was pretty heavy in weight and after cutting a slice, the heft was visibly attributable to the mesmerizing amounts of delicate chocolate laced ribbons of dough. Chocolate flavor was deliciously strong and sweet but restrained, with little pockets of smooth chocolate hidden between those folds of dough. An interesting note was that despite the Babka's heft, it was not overly rich as the chocolate was the dominant aspect shining through. It's quite possible Kosher baking edicts omit the use of butter in baking, which would explain the absence of a "buttery" richness; I know many Kosher recipes use margarine. This could also explain this Babka being just a bit dry. I also have to note the pleasant streusel like coating on the Babka, which added a pleasant sweetness and some crunchy texture. Overall, this was an excellent Chocolate Babka, and in my rankings is just a little behind Zaro's more decadent version. read more

"CHOCOLATE BABKA"!!! The magical word that makes people go faint just from thinking about it..... Seriously... The chocolate babka at Oneg is to die for and there is nothing in the world that could replace it! It's this big and tall loaf of kokosh (that's how we call it here...) That has probably enough Coco to coat the entire Air force one and still have some leftover Coco in the bowl... So when you try it, Devour responsibly! Freshness is never a issue as all of their cakes are baked fresh daily (sometimes my Babka is still warm... Mmmmmm..... I'm literally salivating while writing this review!) and the leftovers get distributed every night to worthy organizations. As for the bakery itself, it's pretty small without any seating (probably place for like 8 people standing) and could be crowded and an uncomfortable experience at times. This tiny bakery in Williamsburg only sells a few things: babka, mini croissants (cinnamon and chocolate) and challah bread. This review is only for the babka. I purchased a loaf of it to bring over to my in laws for afternoon tea. One loaf us about $20 but can feed an army!! This babka is one of the better ones I have tasted in my lifespan of babkas. Very chocolaty. They use a pretty decent chocolate...I believe a semi sweet one which is great because there are swirls and swirls of chocolate. A thin slice of this goes very well with coffee or tea or even wine!! I would not hesitate to get this again for the next gathering. I do want to try the challah bread next time. Ordered a babka through Goldbelly on 10/25 with scheduled delivery on 11/24. We had read so many excellent reviews and wanted the babka to be our special dessert for Thanksgiving. This is our first time hosting Thanksgiving and we had all of our family hyped up for the babka only to find out in the afternoon of 11/24 that it still hadn't shipped and will be rescheduled for Friday. Had to scramble last minute for dessert and needless to say everyone was quite disappointed. Friday noon got another update that it's been rescheduled for next week. Oneg has the best chocolate babka I have ever had in the City. I am no expert on them and am not looking for authenticity or anything like that, but I am no noob either, having tried some of the best at Mother's in the Bronx, Breads Bakery in Union Square, and a few others here on Lee Avenue as well. We purchased a single slice of babka about an inch thick, and it was so sweet, decadent and dense that it lasted us 2 days. Those folds you see in the photo are filled with delicious, thick, fudge-meets-brownie-batter richness, and the folds of pastry are the consistency of the inside of a cinnamon bun. The exterior has a crumbly, croissant like edge with less buttery taste, but a perfect contrast to the gooey interior. The sweetness is high, but not in the typical way. I don't know how they did it but the sweetness sits underneath the rich chocolate taste, instead of hitting you smack on the tongue. Oneg is definitely worth a stop if you are near Lee Avenue for the babka, the hamentashen and some of the other small bites. read more

I stumbled in out of the pouring rain and the man dressed in Hasidic garb asked me, you're here for the babka? I was completely out of place in this neighborhood in my plain clothes, but felt like mishpacha in the cramped bakery. The man sliced one of these ginormous loaves in half and it was still my weight bearing activity for the day. I recently ordered ONEG BAKERY'S ONION POCKETS. I'm a former New Yorker. I now live in Albuquerque New Mexico and had them flown in through Goldbelly Foods. I am an absolute onion lover so I thought when I got them they would just have a few onions on them like an onion Bagel... Wow was I wrong. These onion Pockets were not to be believed, they loaded them up with onions so much so that I needed two hands to pick them up to keep the chopped onions from falling out. Each large roll is round and resembles a small loaf of bread. The bread itself was quite delicious and appealing. I dare say it is the most delicious bakery product I have ever eaten. If you have not tried them yet, make a special effort to order some from the Oneg bakery in Brooklyn N.Y. If you like any type of bread with onions in it, this is the top of the line. It is definitely a five-star product and the Oneg bakery should be congratulated for having such wonderful authentic products. I settled on their famous double chocolate babka. They cut me a nice thick slice and it came to $10 (they price it by weight). Normally I would think that's overpriced, But you're really getting your money's worth. I got at least two days worth of babka, cause it's so rich! As soon as you take that first, sweet, melt in your mouth bite of babka you're hooked. It's the best babka I've ever had! It's barely even a loaf, and more like pure, chocolate fudge in the middle. It's super duper dense! The babka is sweet, but actually not overly sugary. I could tell that they added a nice, healthy pinch of salt to balance the sweetness. The absolute best chocolate babka I have ever eaten. Real chocolate, lots of thin layers of pastry, just the right amount of crispy sweet crumbs. Heaven. The shopping experience was fun. Everything is sold by weight at the same cost per pound which is liberating. You get tongs, plastic gloves, bags and clamshells and start selecting. The babka is cut to order. I asked for a nice big slice and a four-inch piece filled a clamshell and probably weighed a pound! That, plus another clamshell filled with (heavy) rum balls and strudel, and a bag filled with fragrant rugelach and crispy chocolate and cinnamon cigarettes, cost $37, which was more than fair. What a treat! Next time I'll skip the cream puff since the filling was likely not real cream (probably because it was made to accompany a meat meal), but everything else was wonderful. My grandmother would make the very best babka in the world and it was my very favorite dessert. Forget Oreos and Mallomars. It was all about the babka. And then my grandma passed away. :-( My mom never got the recipe and so it was lost forever. Until I found Green's. But then something happened. On my way home the other day, I decided to pop into Oneg's and try the babka. I saw glowing reviews and figured I'd give it a shot. Surely it wasn't at the level of Green's. And it wasn't. It was better! What?!?! This even beats out my nostalgia. What makes it so damn good? It's just layers and layers of rich chocolate. A really good babka should be moist and chocolate-centric. This is it. This is the best damn babka I've ever had in my life! At $8/lb, it's good value considering how good and filling it is. So I will return and I will be bringing my sister, who is also a babka-holic. But if you like old-school babka, this is it. read more

This is certainly the most intense babka I have ever had. Dense, sticky, bursting with chocolate, it's almost closer to a candy than a baked good. An expensive treat, but a little goes a long way. A slice will constitute your entire breakfast, and you will need two cups of coffee to get it down. Also enjoyed some rugalach and schnecken. Could not wait to try the chocolate bobka after reading all the glowing reviews. We were totally disappointed. First, after paying almost $23 for the bobka we expected "manna from heaven." There was plenty of chocolate. lots of grainy sugar and uncooked dough inside. It tasted like chocolate cookie dough. For those people who never tasted Gertel's bobks before they closed or Zadye's in New Jersey, Oneg's migjt be ok.
