Today, we made a stop at One6Three, tucked into the East Rock section of New Haven, where it's been holding down its corner for about ten years. This place is small, unapologetic, and full of character. Decorative firewood stacked with intention, walls filled with wine corks, and #10 tomato cans repurposed as pizza stands. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot. Excellent pizza. Super friendly staff

Our fourth time passing through New Haven and the debate for best pizza in New Haven still rages on. This is a smaller space compared to the more popular places and no wait for a weekday lunch. The space is adorable, especially the outdoor area, more of a traditional pizzeria feel. We tried the King Pie, White Clam, wings and pig candy. First thing first, the clam pizza was good, but Pepe's was better. I really liked the King Pie, not sure if it's everyone's cup of tea with peanut butter, I thought it was really good (like a warm PB & J). The wings were well season and tender. The pig candy was definitely a big hit. Would love to come back and try more pies.

Nice and quick service if you don't want to wait on an hour line for the other guys. Ordered a 12 inch grandma pie with hot cherry peppers for myself, nice and light. Didn't feel like I ate a whole pie actually surprised I did end up finishing. The sauce is tangy, light on the cheese for a grandma, I did have to add some parm myself, but really nice otherwise.Place feels very old school but with a new school twist, great fun pie options. They do offer outside seating, not much space indoors.

An okish first time visit. I wanted to try a new pizza place in New Haven for a birthday and chose this one. But the food didn't feel like a celebration, in my opinion. One 6 Three is an unusual name - it's a small and cozy spot with few tables and bar seating, set in a residential neighborhood. We tried the gluten free crust (available only in 12") American margherita pie and added mushrooms in half of it. The wood fired crust was well done, I really liked it. Lots of garlic, yum. However, the tomatoes on it were raw and that didn't feel very good. Also, there were no condiments offered on the side- like oregano- is that normal in a pizza place? Maybe I need to try more pizza places :)

Just awesome. Pizza was outstanding. Great service. Good vibe. I ordered extra cheese not sure I needed it. This shop was off the main roads and worth the trip.

My husband and I have been looking for some good pizza for a while now. We've tried a few of the "popular" pizzerias but have been far from impressed. We ordered 2 pizzas. 1 large half cheese half pepperoni and fresh garlic and 1 medium Breaking my meatballs. Not only was the pizza amazing. Hot, fresh, tasty, but the service was just as amazing. It was extremely busy so our pizzas weren't done when we were told they would be, but we'd order and wait over and over. Definitely our new favorite spot. My husband loved the atmosphere and coziness of the pizzeria and we can't wait to go back for date night! Thank you 163!!

In a town with way too many amazing pizza options, one six three is towards the top of my list. They have so many fun, thoughtful pies, and the pizza itself is so well-executed. I have almost always done takeout and recently dined in for the first time. What a great experience! It's a small restaurant but the vibe is super warm and welcoming. They also let you BYOB so we enjoyed our pizza over a bottle of wine, making for a super lovely evening.

One 6 Three is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in February 2016. It was founded by Andrew Holmes and his girlfriend Alexa Flagge (with the help of her parents Jack & Janet). Holmes began his journey in the pizza-making business when he started working at a Seymour pizzeria owned by two Albanian immigrants. He worked his way up from cleaning to cooking and eventually took jobs at other restaurants. Holmes then found himself working for Jack & Janet Flagge, owners of the Old World Pizza Truck. In the catering business since 1980, the Flagges started their pizza truck business in 2007. Holmes began dating the Flagges' daughter Alexa, and the couple soon had a dream to open their own pizzeria. They found a location at 163 Foster Street, in New Haven's East Rock neighborhood, that had previously been home to Angelo's Pizza. Holmes knocked down the wall that hid the kitchen in order to help his new pizzeria build connections between the workers and customers. In addition to pizza, the menu also offers sandwiches, wings, meatballs, fries, mac & cheese, salads, and more. My two sons and I recently visited One 6 Three for lunch. We had been cycling around New Haven and were in the mood for some pizza. One 6 Three has been on my radar for a while. It's part of a growing number of pizzerias located in the Goatville section of East Rock. After locking up my bicycle outside, we headed inside and grabbed a table. My sons and I really enjoyed the open kitchen set-up; we love watching people cook. After looking over the menu, we decided to order and share "The Mootz" (hand-crushed tomato sauce & mozzarella) with half pepperoni, "Potato Head" (a thin layer of our mashed potatoes as the base, sautéed onions, smoked bacon, four cheeses & a sprinkle of scallions), and "Grandma's" (hand-crushed tomato sauce, fresh garlic, fresh basil & grated pecorino romano cheese). Great sauce, crust and toppings! I would say that these pies are sort of a hybrid between classic New Haven-style pizza and tavern-style pizza. Our favorite was probably "Grandma's". We all give One 6 Three our seal of approval!

I really enjoyed this pizza! I got a personal size Grandma's pie no fresh garlic, light baked. The crust was nice and crispy without being too charred. Reasonably priced, too. I would def return to try their other pies.

White clam pizza

I had the white clam pizza last night, and it was the most delicious pizza I've ever had! I wasn't planning on eating the entire 12 inch pizza by myself, but it was too good to resist! I look forward to having it again.

My husband and I called in our order for pick up tonight. It was our first time trying One 6 Three after hearing good things from friends. We ordered the Potato Head Pie and the Chicken Parm sandwich. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes which is fast! The food was good and the individuals who work there are nice. It was a good experience and we will be returning again.

My daughter and I decided to come here for dinner and I'm glad we did. When we arrived there was no seating inside so we dined outside because there was no more seating inside. Which was fine because it was beautiful evening. We ordered a large half Pepperoni and Cheese pizza and Cheese Curds. The Cheese Curds were delicious. They we're crispy, flavorful, and the dipping sauce was just the right touch to bring that flavorful profile up. It seem like the Cheese Curds had a garlic bread breading which was very innovative. The pizza was delicious as my daughter and I only left two slices to bring home. The pizza was a nice size pizza and I'm glad we ordered a large pizza. The pizza was crispy and had that crunch factor which I love. The pepperoni on top of the pizza was like bacon. I think was my favorite part of pizza. The sauce was awesome as it was also flavorful and brought the whole pizza together. The customer service was great and the staff we're so kind because as we're sitting outside, we had a couple of bee's swarm are pizza. We were fighting them off but two staff employees came outside and helped pick up are things to escort us inside as seating became available. The staff are so gracious and the kids and I will definitely be back.

We had the ricotta and honey on toast, meatballs, prosciutto/mozzarella to start, some white wine and of course PIZZA! The pizza was light and cooked perfectly. We had the Dolce Salato and the Diavolina. We loved the Dolce Salato! The Diavolina was good, but I think some more spicy salami or maybe an additional spicy component would have been a good addition to the pizza. It needed just a little bit more on the flavor side. But still everything here is high quality and I would recommend! Service was excellent. We were immediately seated and had the option to sit inside or outside. I first sat inside, then we moved to a larger table outside. What I really appreciated as a new mom, was their openness and flexibility for coming in with a stroller. I was nervous to be a burden to the restaurant, but they were super accommodating. Thank you On room for improvement, I think on a hot day, having the inside space being much much cooler, than the outdoor seating (especially for newborns/really young kids/elderly) would be beneficial. Yesterday it was cool inside to start (and remember I chose to move outside), but they started to leave the front door open to allow for easy movement of staff and guests between inside and outside, which made the indoor space get warmer over time. And I totally get that for the ease of movement for staff/guests, but maybe consider keeping it super cool on the inside, so that kiddos/elderly have a cool space on a really hot day to not overheat. The vibe here is great. Chill, warm and light! Come with family and/or friends and enjoy!

It was a lovely table and had the privacy that is lacking in many places. There was a bathroom on the level so no need to run downstairs if needed. My irritation for the late start disappeared immediately. I haven;t even started to mention the food. I ordered tapas plates and a salad; others had dinner entrees where the portions overwhelmed. Even now I can remember the salad mista that was incredibly fresh with a fantastic dressing. Tried the Caesar as well and it is a tough choice, BTWl. I had scallops and risotto which was incredibly filling with a tremendous sauce. Presented in a lovely way. I also had the ricotta filled purses with brown sugar and the flavor combination was pleasing. Other dishes included the spicy rigatoni, steak, short rib and bolognese. Rave reviews for all. Dolci included gelato and the chocolate cake. Very important to make sure and try the sweet at the end of the meal. We will return and others should try this restaurant. What it's referring to is New Haven, and in particular the prominent restaurants that originate its local style of pizza. Modern is the third of a trinity of well-known pizzas, and unlike the others it has not expanded outside of New Haven and is not on the same Italian-heavy street. I was fooled by the name into thinking that it was going to be "modern" pizza with pineapple and edamame or something, but it is actually just as traditional as the others. There is a small vestibule on entry, where you are apparently supposed to wait and get your name taken for a table. I was a bit nervous that there were several groups ahead of me, but it was not a long wait for me, maybe ten or fifteen minutes on a weeknight. It's a fast-cooking pizza and a decent-sized restaurant, so in the entirely likely event of a line, it does move quickly. The menu is focused, with the pizza accompanied by beverages and a couple of salads and bread-based appetizers. Figuring I won't be back in the area for a while, I just went ahead and got a salad and garlic bread that I knew I wouldn't finish; I was offered a massive side of marinara sauce with my bread. I also got a white birch soda in the distinctive local brand to complete the experience, and it was a strong birch bark taste. The pizza crust felt a little chewy to me at first, but it grew on me. The ample char and my wise topping choice of cherry peppers delivered a complex mix of flavors that transcended simple description. It was perhaps my favorite of the big players (I've tried some satellite Frank Pepe's locations but haven't been to the original). And the price and the atmosphere are accessible even for people who aren't Ivy Leaguers. Maybe the Connecticut sign isn't an overreach.
