First time visit--I was psyched by all the good reviews and looked forward to a great breakfast. But my meal wasn't as I anticipated, and I find the many 4- and 5-star reviews puzzling.
I ordered the chilaquiles. I love this dish, and have had it many times in the past. But what I was presented with here was more like a chorizo soup concoction with a 3 or 4 tortilla chips thrown in, with two fried eggs floating on top (a quick image search will show you how it's supposed to be). This dish was not at all appealing as far as presentation--except initially, when the pretty fried eggs hid the truth below. Then it was really sort of gross looking, with blobs of sausage swimming in tepid red sauce, and boo hoo, my thin slice of avocado had a brown spot on it. The eggs did come out hot, though, perfectly cooked, and the broth and sausage--although cool--were tasty. The chunks of queso fresco were mild, as expected--of course they didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of melting in their cool bath. Whole grain toast was very tasty, as was the coffee.
My companion had the Florentine "Omelette", with homefries, white "toast", and a side of Canadian bacon ($3.95--the online menu's $2.95 is inaccurate). His first bite of homefries was instant disappointment. Straight out of the kitchen, they were perhaps 2 degrees warmer--maybe!--than room temperature (I kid you not--I tried a bite).. The "omelette" was like none either of us had ever seen before, more like an egg crepe. A perfectly round, very thin creation, into which a little spinach, mushrooms, and cheese had been placed in the center, then the side flaps of the egg folded over the center.... very strange. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it was made with 3 eggs--maybe they were quail eggs, or perhaps produced by a special breed of pygmy chicken? Next, his first piece of toast was not toast, but white bread that had totally dodged any heating element--yum. Other pieces were very very lightly toasted, though, whoo hoo. (What's up with a breakfast restaurant unable to serve TOAST consistently? C'mon!) On to the Canadian bacon, which consisted of two extremely small, shrivelly, thin (I estimate 3/32") slices--certainly NOT worth $4.00 by a long shot. But it did taste good.
Aside from this, service was decent, ingredients were fresh, atmosphere is nice (art on the walls, lots of natural light) and our coffee cups did not run dry. I picked up a "buy 10, get one free card," but a little bird tells me I won't ever make it to to 10. While I'm not in a hurry to return, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that I might come back, someday, knowing what to expect. read more
