Went here on a Saturday and was able to grab a seat with a friend in the area up the stairs. The cafe was beautifully decorated with a good amount of seating. We were debating between the Shibuya Honey toast and the Matcha Cha Cha toast, so we asked the worker which they preferred. Unfortunately the Matcha toast was sold out so that made our decision for us. Everything worked out though as the Shibuya honey toast was so delicious!! 10/10 and as far as I know you can't get it elsewhere nearby. I would come here again just for this alone, but be warned it is very sweet. As for the drinks, they were good but nothing spectacular. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and super cozy. It's a great place to stop by for some food/ drinks, or to do some work. They do have actual foods like unagi, salmon, and tuna bowls! We got the Rose Hana Milk Tea and the Uji Matcha Milk Tea. Nicely balanced and deep in flavors, they used good matcha and you can taste the floral notes of the rose. It was way too sweet, I would highly suggest asking for half or quarter sweetness. The Shibuya Honey Toast is soft and crunchy on the outside, dense like bread pudding on the inside. We went here on a whim while waiting for the train. We ordered the Shibuya Honey Toast and Matcha Cha Cha Toast to go and 2 other drinks with matcha and ube in them. Not an unusual drink for us. Drinks were on par with the good ones we've had. But the toasts, well, for us they were overpriced. It's just like French Toast with muscles added with a flair of sliced strawberries and vanilla ice cream for the Shibuya and Matcha ice cream and strawberries for the Matcha Cha cha toast. I wouldn't order this again. But the ambiance is great! I'm giving OMi 4 stars because of the ambiance inside of the store and because of how nice and helpful the employees were to us. We needed some time to go through the menu and they were available for us to ask questions and they even let us know what special deals they had available. We ended up doing the BOGO Thai tea soft serve. The ice cream itself was alright. I wouldn't say I love Thai tea, but I also don't hate it. I'm a bit indifferent to the flavor. Super airy and relaxing place with tons of windows. Is a great spot to hang out with some friends, do some reading, or get some work done. The service is very friendly and quick. We went right when they opened and met the owner. He was extremely friendly (and somewhat superhuman with being able to run multiple restaurants, be a lawyer, and take care of children). I really wanted to love this place but It wasn't a good experience. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that there was just one person working alone. The store itself was very busy for a rainy day so I can only imagine how busy it gets on a nicer day. The barista looked overwhelmed and the drinks had long wait times to come out. I thought it'd be a nice place to sit with friends but it seems a lot more like a study cafe. Everyone's pretty silent and working on their laptops making it awkward to talk. The menu doesn't have a lot of options, especially pertaining to milk tea so I just ordered a hot vanilla latte. The latte art was cute but honestly this was one of the worst lattes I've ever had. I was really excited to hear about Omi on Instagram because I love shaved ice and am ridiculously passionate about it. It's probably one of my favorite foods. I love Chicago and living here, but I do find myself jealous that as someone who is from NYC, New York has a lot more shaved ice options including good kakigori. In my opinion, their Omi kakigori has more of a snowy bingsoo texture than what I associate with kakigori personally, but I could be wrong / I'm not an expert. I have ordered something here three or four times now and have to say that every time it is fallen short. Oolong boba tastes like it was from a can with tapioca balls disintegrating without a chew and overly fragrant syrups in the drink. The milk tea left a filmy taste in my mouth. O-Mi... surely, you must mean Oh My! On a recent stop in O-Mi, I was served up racism and humiliation instead of a brown sugar tea with boba ...by the manager no less. When I picked up my order, I noticed my order did not have boba. I told him that I ordered boba. The so-called manager decide to say to me "you didn't order that." I assured him I did (it is my regular order every week), and a friend with me later confirmed that I did in fact order a brown sugar tea with boba. After he took the beverage to add boba, he decided he would mock me and my voice as he was adding boba. So, I added "maybe you didn't hear me." He kept mocking me as my children and friend stood there. I told him "you need to stop." He doubled down and started saying "you need to stop. Maybe you didn't hear me." You can image how upsetting it would be, as the only black person in this restaurant with my children, white cis man mocking me (as his reports both Hispanic and Asian were working). I asked him for the manager and he said he was the manager (which my husband later confirmed). I asked then who is the owner, and he responded her didn't know. He continued to mock my voice as I asked. Eventually, I raised my voice noting that I am a regular and pointed to another regular. I again asked him to stop, and when he didn't, I finally dumped my drink on the floor. His repsonse: "I don't care." He then had the audacity to speak to my children chastising how I was acting. I responded that I was demanding respect and asking someone to stop mocking me. I am sure some of you will read this and think nothing of it. But let me be clear - NO ONE DESERVES TO BE HUMILIATED FOR ASKING FOR SOMETHING AND TREATED AS LESS THAN FOR DEMANDING RESPECT. The cafe was a regular stop for my family, and we loved coming either as a family or as a weekly stop to grab treats for our children. So while this man got his little $20 + 20%, he has now lost a family that weekly stopped in. Thank goodness that Lakeview has high turn over and a number of other boba tea spots. read more
