They also had fresh sashimi and really good sushi options. I was most impressed with this buffet and will make it a point to return often. I find it to be a great deal. The nostalgia of a Chinese buffet I remember as a teenager. I loved it. The staff was super nice everything looked very clean and even though they were busy were filling up the buffet and cleaning up the messes. It was only 25$!!!!! And later into our meal after going back for more I noticed that flies had made their way in...a few of them landed on the food and none of the workers did anything to cover the food or swat them away..not sure if that can be fix or improved to ensure overall Quality and safety of the customers. I have been wanting to try this place since I saw they were open! Lately, I've been in the habit of reading reviews before I visit a place! They have some mixed reviews, so I wasn't sure what we were going to get! I figured for $25.99, all you can eat what the heck! I was so pleased with every single thing I tried! I had the crawfish, crabs, snow crab legs, octopus sushi, many varieties of shrimp, cuttle fish, all the sashimi available, oysters, muscles, Cajun and regular butter mixed. I'm a pretty adventurous eater so I really was in awe of this place! It's beautiful on the inside! It has these fiber optic looking trees hanging from the ceiling! It's a wonderful shade of glowing blue on the walls! The servers are nice and courteous! They come quick with your refills and take your plates away soon! This place is conveniently located next door to 88 Farmers Market (excellent Asian market). We had been looking for a place to lunch before we went grocery shopping and Ombu has a nice sized banner proclaiming its Grand Opening. Grand it is indeed! The interior is reminiscent of a Tokyo restaurant. My friend agreed and said it was also "very Vegas". It's clean, there's a bunch of neon and, if you look up, there are fireworks of color light filaments. It's pretty. The seating is comfortable and the tables all seem level. The food...YUM!!! Everything was very fresh and the variety was unbelievable. There could definitely be more labels, especially the dessert area. I tried a little bit of everything and it was mostly delicious. The "dumpling sauce" was not the usual sauce. The smell was extremely off-putting and it tainted everything else on my plate. It could have been just me but maybe not. The beef in the beef and broccoli was very tender and seasoned well. I found the brown sugar bun (there are a few dim sum bao!) quite bland. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the various chicken preparations were all balanced in the flavor/spice ratio. The almond cookies were soft, the star shaped filled (apple? pear?) cookies were weird and pasty, cake squares weren't labelled (not good for those of us with food allergies), the tiny brownies were moist, and I was not brave enough to try the packaged snack that described itself as "flour flavored with chicken meat floss". Here's a thing that I bothers me. Should plates and bowls be at knee height? Because that is where you will find them under the buffet items. Utensils are in the usual spots: on the same level as the food. Lunch price is $13.99 + tax. Dinner is $25.99 + tax. Lunch is absolutely worth it. I don't know what changes are made to make dinner $12 more expensive. There's plenty of seafood, including sushi, options during lunch. There is also a take out option which is charged by weight. I did not make note of the cost per pound but there were signs posted that stated wasted food would be charged at $9.90 per pound. Overall, I will happily lunch at Ombu again. I was super excited to try this new buffet, but it just wasn't good. The crab legs were rubbery and nearly impossible to crack. The meat inside was overcooked and super stringy. The snow crab used in the sushi was very strange in texture and color. The hot food was just not good and unflavored. The extra star is for the crab rangoons and salmon nigiri which was the only thing appetizing that I had. I may have high expectations, because I work at a sushi restaurant and I'm use to quality. But this was just not it. I wouldn't be opposed to giving it another try, because the service was good and it was very clean. Hopefully they work on food quality overall. read more
