"Olili" means "shimmering and sparkly" according to our server who was working his second day at this brand new restaurant, less than 2 weeks old. As the shining star of all the Foodland eateries, it is aptly named. It's located in the back right side of the fabulous new Waikiki Market, a well designed upscale market that reminded us of a fancy Japanese department store market. I love the vision of whoever conceived of this place, which embodies a classy but relaxed feel. It's a bigger better version of the Kahala Market and prices are on par so you don't feel like you're getting ripped off for being in Waikiki. More than just a place to get food, it's part of a concept that honors Hawaii. They succeed in their vision of "Aloha Meets 'Ono" which I didn't see until I was on my way out. It starts when you enter the parking garage of Lilia (on Welina St.) and the walls welcome you with inspiring messages that transform dark, geometric, concrete structure. Take the parking elevator to the ground level and walk makai towards the International Marketplace where you can take another elevator up to the second floor. They need signs and information on how to get from the garage to the restaurant to make it easier for Locals. Parking is validated. We paid $10 for 3.5 hours.
(Yes ... long review but lots to say about this new star on our culinary scene!!)
The architectural and interior design are literally brilliant! With a ceiling full of gorgeous lighting, Olili is beautiful to look at from the inside and outside from the street below. Its large glass windows overlook Kuhio Ave for an amazing effect at night. With the outside lights of Waikiki and those of the restaurant inside, you are surrounded by lights. I loved our round corner table which afforded us good conversation and the best view.
(On to the FOOD!)
With a one sheet menu, Olili does an amazing job of covering the basic protein bases in a unique and creative way. It pays homage to Hawaii's mixed plate culture in a way that is both local and international, traditonal and contemporary, with some vegan and gluten free options. Lucky to try this new place with close friends who also enjoy food. We ate family style so between the 6 of us we were able to sample half the menu. Everything was excellent but * for the popular dishes and more **for the top winners of my post meal survey.
PUPUS
**Hand-cut beef tartare-my personal fave, this beautiful red American wagyu was like beef sashimi with notes of shoyu cured egg yolk, ssamjang, and and mustard seeds mixed in for flavor and texture . Paired with light crispy tendon puffs that reminded us of chicharon, it may have been one of the best tartares I've had yet!
*Bone Marrow - another possible best yet, the braised oxtail Ragu had an amazing concentrated pho like flavor, again putting an Asian spin on a traditionally European dish! Muah!
Smoked fish dip- always one of my go to faves ,newer more interesting dishes caught my attention more, but still excellent! The marinated ikura on top was amazing, just wish it had more!
Local Roots- root vegetables with buratta and macadamia nut pesto -it didn't Wow like the others.
MAINS
***Garlic shrimp forbidden rice- this ancient Chinese black grain rice with its hard almost nutty texture is totally unlike the soft white grain most of us know as rice. It's ahmazing! Mixed with, lup Chong, pork hash, bottarga, and topped with 3 jumbo garlic shrimp, this dish was full of interesting ingredients that harmonized to create a delicious bowl of taste and texture.
* Chili Crab Noodles- another beautiful fusion of flavors, seasoned with Fresno chili, and mixed with chunks of Dungeoness crab and shishito! Muah!
*Crispy Kona Kampachi on Portuguese bean soup- we wondered why a bowl of soup cost $42 but it's really like 2 dishes in 1- a perfectly cooked slab of kampachi atop a thick almost stew like soup chucked full of goodies. Muah aussi!
*10 oz Prime NY Strip- another dish that succeeds in blending flavors from Hawaii's different cultures. Loved the jang steak sauce and fried gobo!
DESSERT
*Okinawan Haupia "Mud" Bar- Ube custard , Haupia sorbet, shaved Okinawan Potato-beautiful taste and presentation!
Hawaiian Rainbow Cake - lilikoi , guava, kalamansi cream, pineapple coulis, sprinkle with young coconut shavings was also attractive and delicious!
SERVICE
Young, friendly, polite. Some need to gain more experience to match the level of fine dining, but they tried hard and we felt taken care of by the overall staff, especially the Market manager who had to help us with the elevator.
Bravo and MAHALO to Sr Chef de Cuisine, Brenton Lee and his team for this sparkly new gem of a restaurant!! MAIKA'i !! read more
