Working in Virginia City, Nevada, I am constantly inundated with people wearing western/historical clothing. I finally made my mind up to join the others and buy some boots. And everyone knows, the Red garter is the best place in town to buy western wear. So, I walked in and started trying on boots. Having larger calves, nothing fit (which was really annoying because they have a fabulous pair of american flag boots that were really calling my name.) Marcella, the co-owner, came over and asked if I needed help. I shared with her my dilemma and she went into their inventory and probably brought out 8 boxes of boots. Those didn't fit either - especially the american flag boots. Damn my calves. She said she likes challenges and said she'd reach out to her retailers to see if any of them have boots that would fit. I thanked her profusely. Over the next two weeks, we kept in contact through email and she sent me photos of the boots she could order that would fit. I chose the cutest style. Within no time, I got the email they were in store, went in, tried them on, and bought them. Oh man, they are amazing. I am definitely a faithful customer now thanks to all her legwork. We made a resent trip to Virginia City last weekend. We walked the Main Street. I was looking for a belt, but left with suspenders and jeans. The belt will be another time, the bucket has its own story. They sale American made leather belts, about $80.00. You do have the option of a less expensive non-American option. The American made a great quality. The owner was nice and helpful. We came in on Labor Day at the end of their day. We came in and they were going to close. He told me take your time they would close after we finished. There is a wide variety of merchandise, boots, hats, belts, Western clothes and accessories. I will return the next time I'm in town. They have the best merchandise in town. read more

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the BEST place in America for authentic western wear, but for the middle of nowhere, it's pretty dang good if you are caught up in the whole Wild West vibe and fancy buying a pair of $300 cowboy boots and $200 cowboy hats. There are belts and lots of flannel and for those days you are feeling kinky and want to get your Civil War Re-Enactment outfit on, come on over. There are, strangely, signs everywhere they say NO PHOTOS. I wonder why - I don't see anything proprietary in selling cowboy boots that you can find pretty much online or anywhere else. read more

My Carson City friend, a.k.a. Western Nevada Tour Guide, told me we have to stop in at The Old Red Garter. She said they have wonderful things. Me, not being an enthusiastic shopper for the sake of shopping, said, what the hell? It was Christmas Eve. The weather had turned to "wintry mix." Any port in a storm, right? This is a large store with a wide variety of goods. The exterior sign says "Western Wear." That means it sells enough boots to line half a wall, from floor to ceiling; western hats; belts, purses, bags; and all varieties of clothes for men and women. We, being single middle-aged women who live with pets, did not cross over the continental divide to the men's side; someone else will have to tell you about that. But we spent close to an hour going through the racks. When we entered, we saw a prominently displayed sign that read "50% off entire store today." The possibility of a big bargain turned me into an interested shopper. While my friend worked her way through the boot section, I explored the rest of the women's side. Not only does this store carry modern goods, but it also carries Victorian-era women's wear. I saw a full-length, stunning opera cloak at the rear of the store. Another woman was looking at it, and I said, isn't this gorgeous? But who would wear it? She told me that she had the very same gown at home, and that she was a Victorian-era re-enactor who entertained tourists during the summer season. Who knew??? I still didn't buy it. But I did find a beautiful sweater with fake fur. I've never seen the like before. And at half-price? Sold! Even at full-price, it was reasonably priced. I might have -- might have! - bought it anyway. My friend did buy a pair of boots. Very cute. You could spend big bucks on items here. I saw a coat that I liked very much, but I couldn't afford. Maybe you could. It was gorgeous. In fact, there were many items here which I hadn't seen anywhere else. If you get carried away, they will ship your purchases for you. Wonderful store. I'm so glad it's a couple thousand miles away from me, or MasterCard would like me even better than it already does. We were two very satisfied shoppers. read more

If they don't have a western style hat here for you, then it doesn't exist. Exquisite hats made of fine leather with great eye to detail adorn the ceiling and walls. There's some cowboy duds throughout and boots, too, but it's those hats that catch the eye when you walk in. The cashier was super friendly, too. The reason this place didn't get five stars was due to the woman on the floor, she kept following me like I was going to do something. If I'm willing to drop a cool $200 for a hat, let me browse for the right one without being followed everywhere. Otherwise, enjoyed my experience here. read more

The locale brings in the nostalgia that one is looking for when searching for the best western wear available. I have been to countless Western stores and this one takes the cake. Here you can find authentic western wear, casual wear, men's, women's, and children's boots, hats, boot and hat care products, belts, and much more. The boots are great quality brands weather your looking for something flashy, or something you can wear riding, you can find that here. My husband is a Stetson man and picked up a beautiful open road at a fair price. The owner professionally steamed and fitted it for him as well. He also refitted and steamed the hat he was wearing at no charge. My daughter, who is three, found a dream pair of pink light up boots as well on sale for the amazing price of $30! Her jaw dropped when she saw these so of coarse daddy didn't pass them up. The owner is very knowledgeable about the history of the town and his building and was very kind to tell us how he got into owning Virginia City's "Old Red Garter". This place has great ambiance, hospitality, and products. I definitely recommend this place to those looking for a great pair of boots and a great hat. *They do close at 5:00pm during the "off season" so if it's not summer, be sure to get there earlier in the day. read more

I'm not sure about the merchandise. I called and they said they would be there until 6:00PM. I left work early and drove an hour and a half. I arrived a little before 5:30 PM. The doors were locked. I tapped on the window and told them I had driven an hour and a half. The guy shrugged his shoulders and shook his head no. I'm sure they have great merchandise but I don't think I will ever buy from them again. read more

I heard a lot of good things about this place. They have three different phone numbers that I tried calling so I could find out their hours but no one ever answered or called me back. I finally decided to drive up there and hope they'd be open. I was trying on some clothes (they didn't have many options for sizes) when the lady who worked there approached me and took the clothes out of my hand without even asking me what my plans were. I told her I wanted to purchase those so she gave them to her coworker and asked him to set them up front then he decided to put them all away. The lady continued to be rude to me and said she assumed I was still there because I wanted to buy something and she did not want to answer my questions about their business at all. Simple questions about when they get new items and their hours. She acted like me being in her store was a burden and I felt as if I was being poorly treated for no reason so instead of making the purchases I wanted to I left. Attitude is a big deal no matter how nice their items were I will not waste my time or money on such a rude individual. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Don't waste your gas money when they aren't willing to work with their customer. read more

Loved this place. My wife and I do cowboy action shooting which you you dress up in authentic clothing for. Where we are from it's hard to find authentic "old" west wear, except online, but Red Garter had a huge selection including the exact boots I've been wanting. The owner's grandson (Paul I'm pretty sure) was helping me and what a trooper. He even helped me look for the exact hat I wanted and when they didn't exactly have it, he found one that he steamed and reshaped (which they charge for where we are from ,if they'll even do it) into exactly what I wanted. We spent quite a bit and when we paid they gave us the discount they give to local reenactors because of our cowboy shooting. Next time I'm in Virginian City I'm going back. read more

This is an overpriced, dusty western store. Employees are not that friendly. Has some nice hats, however they are run of the mill. There is a section of the store that has pre-made hats that can have the crowns shaped, however, after browsing the town, I found the Virginia City Hat Maker inside the Pioneer Emporium, who makes the hats completely by hand, and for a good price - and we left with a much better souvenir. read more
