This is watered down apple juice

Today's experience was disappointing. The apple juice tasted very watered down and lacked flavor. The service also felt uncomfortable there were small comments being made that came across as suspicious and could potentially offend someone. Overall, it wasn't a very welcoming or enjoyable experience. Food was good but not great

Old Mill Cafe is assuredly a gem of Modesto, as far as breakfast spots go. For me personally, it's a little out of the way and a little dated inside--you can see the remnants of days-gone-by with the formerly-smoking-section architecture in place, and yeah, the menus are a little sticky and worn with some spelling errors sprinkled in--but who gives a darn when the food and service is absolutely excellent?! The first thing to endear me? The excellent size of the coffee cups! I hate when you go to a breakfast place and the mugs are tiny, which is the standard fare for most of these sorts of places. Not at Old Mill. They're nice big mugs and they hold a respectable amount of coffee! Like what you'd have at home! Other standouts were the Chicken Fried Steak (it didn't need a knife at all) and have y'all heard of their Chile Verde Pork Omelette?! Apparently it's been written up in the local paper AND DESERVEDLY SO! It literally melts right on your tongue. Absolutely stunning! I don't go out for breakfast often but I'm coming back right quick for that omelette! Lastly, the service was amazing! Our waitress was attentive and friendly, all of the waitstaff were really, and the food came out quickly without sacrificing flavor or quality! I do wish my hash browns were crispier though. I always order them hella crispy but these came out with minimal crust and lots of steamed shredded potatoes. But again, hardly a dealbreaker for returning! Can't wait to come back soon!

This was such a cute little spot! The service was amazing from the moment we walked in the door, everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. Our server was attentive throughout our meal and my coffee never went empty. The food was sooooo good! Huge portions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Another tasty breakfast spot! It was my first timecard trying trying out this little place in downtown Modesto. I've passed it many times and I think it's an old restaurant. My friend said it was at another location actually in an old windmill. Tasty omlette and country fried potatoes. And yummy fresh light fluffy biscuits and tasty gravy. I didn't notice sausage so good for me. A bit of an older crowd and apparently some regulars. Waitresses seemed friendly. I would just liked to have had an option of flavored creamers for my coffee. I'd go back again.

Best chicken fried steak in Modesto! Great friendly service. Kid friendly! Clean dining room old school vide.

My New York Steak & Eggs

The coffee was watered down and lacking. I order the old fashioned breakfast New York strip, and with country potatoes and toast. The only thing edible were the eggs and toast. The country potatoes were cold by the time they got to the table and the New York steak was improperly cooked. In the photo you can see that the meat is gray, which means they put it in an under heated pan or griddle to cook it in this day and age. We are paying far too much money on dining out for it to not be perfect. Don't waste your money cook at home.

They have yummy pastries on display but the breakfast menu has tons of savory options. We ordered H Street Block which is a blueberry french toast casserole. It was the perfect size. It looks small, but it was very filling and just enough to get my day started. It's a bit pricey for the size but since that was the portion I wanted, I wasn't too disappointed. One of the workers mentioned they do have kids menu options, but they didn't have the printed kids menus available, so if you don't see them, just ask when you are ordering. The Champions Breakfast platter was a great choice for our kids to share. It was one of the better fruit bowls I've seen, with a variety of fresh berries and oranges. The place is pretty small inside, but we were there on a Thursday morning so it was no issue finding a parking spot or a table to sit. I appreciate how kid friendly they are, even bringing kid size water cups with lids, and there are even some children's books on the shelf in the back. Such a cute little spot, I would have never known about it if I wasn't looking on Yelp for breakfast places in this area.

We had the country fried steak which was probably the best one I have ever had in my entire life! My sons had chorizo and eggs and the other one had chocolate pancakes, ham and eggs. The place was clean and for such a busy brunch we were sat very quickly! Service was amazing as well! The staff was so accommodating, friendly and professional! They were so hard working turning those tables over and checking on tables all the time. We didn't have to wait for plates to be cleared or refills of Iced Tea!! My husband gets different things on the menu when we go and he enjoys all of them. The only problem I have is it is so loud in there because it is such a small and confined restaurant. And I enjoy the live music being played. It's just such a tight confined little place. And you have to yell to talk to one another therefore everybody else here's your conversation. This is not a good place to go on a date or to get to know somebody over conversation. That's why you have Galletto's or Tresetti's down the street. But if you wanna go and have a quick breakfast, then this is the place. Though wait waitresses are always very, very nice. And the prices are great.

Sadly disappointed…read more My friends and I stopped by Commonwealth on a Saturday afternoon for a late brunch. It was a beautiful day so it was busy for both indoor and outdoor seating. Here, you order your food, grab a number, and find your own seat for the food to be brought out to you. We sat at a table outside to decide what to order. There were no menus available so we just had to search for it online before heading inside to order. Despite being third in line from the register, we had an extremely long wait to order. There was only one person running the register who also had to make the drinks, meaning the service incredibly slow. We wanted to order the five taco platter, garlic fries, chicken Caesar salad, and mimosa pitcher. Sadly, we were only able to get the pitcher and salad. The cashier told us "sorry, we aren't doing fries right now." Not doing fries? Every plate in the vicinity had fries on them. She said that because it was brunch hour, only food on the brunch menu could be ordered. We looked at the brunch menu again and literally saw garlic fries as an option as a side for the burgers/sandwiches. No where did it specify that you can't order off the other menu and both were available online. What bothered us about this is that we placed this order at around 1:50pm, and brunch ended at 2:00pm. I understand that we are not entitled to things on the lunch menu during brunch-time for items like the tacos, but considering the menu swap was less than 10 minutes away and they were quite literally were "doing fries" at the time, it didn't make much sense to us. The only food that we ended up ordering was the Chicken Caesar Salad. This one dish took a super long time to receive. By the time it was brought out, the three of us nearly finished the Mimosa pitcher. The waitress noticed we had no silverware and said she would go grab us some. Because of how the service had been going thus far, we placed a bet on whether or not the waitress would come back with the silverware. Surprise, surprise. She didn't. We had to go inside later and search for silverware ourselves. We weren't even able to get sharing plates which was upsetting since the waitress asked us if we would be sharing the salad. The salad itself looked delicious, but was bland. The dressing was missing that zing and zest that a Caesar dressing typically has. I do appreciate that is was a chopped salad, had avocado, and seasoned croutons. It is just unfortunate that it was lacking any flavor at all. The food prices are quite affordable for the quantity of food you receive though. This experience was disappointing because I was so optimistic about the place. The menu looked good, it had fun and casual vibes and a cool crowd of people. If Commonwealth worked towards better service practices, it would have been a more positive experience.
