One of my favorite places to eat. Their food is always 5 star...but today, not so much. I stopped and ordered a full order of biscuits and gravy to go. When I got home and started to eat...the biscuits were so raw that they strung like cheese. I find it hard to believe that it wasn't noticeable when cutting them in half! If they didn't have any fully cooked biscuits, I would have waited for them to finish baking. I payed almost $11 for food I had to throw in the garbage! read more

I was getting my truck worked on at the mechanic across the street he recommended that I go there and have breakfast or coffee to stay warm while I wait. Upon entry I was greeted by several waitresses that were wearing masks and was seated immediately at the bar. I ordered a decaf coffee ($2.25) and a combo breakfast ($9.95) which was 2 "Plate" size pancakes (yes that big), I asked for egg whites and was served 2 pieces of thick cut bacon. Breakfast came out quick, it was hot. The syrup was also hot. The pancakes were huge. I took half of it home with a half order of bacon. The staff was prompt and friendly. This is a really late post, however I still needed to do it. I was in Modesto for a convention and the hotel breakfast wasn't what I wanted...so I found this place on Yelp... and a friend and I decided to check it out. I love waffles and they made an amazing waffle!! I loved my breakfast here, plain and simple! Waitress was great, no complaints here! Will remember this place next time I am in town! read more

Well, all I can say, is that if you are a coffee connoisseur, this is not the place for you. We didn't even make it past the coffee to try the food. I mean, the food may be good, but if the coffee is not good, that sets the tone for the rest of the experience. It was watered down and reminded us of donut shop coffee. Stop in for breakfast to kill some time while in Modesto last week. Restaurant decor is dated and their clientele are mostly local elderly at 9 am. Noticed MFD having a meeting in the back room, yay, support your local eateries. I loved that I actually had a cup of coffee!!!! Chile Verde omelette was delicious, the pork was so tender and flavorful. Definitely a return visit for that and serving size is decent. We were there Sunday for breakfast. While eating, we noticed that a table with a small dog and service dog with a group. That's not the complete problem, one of the waitress's picked up the small dog a couple of times ( most have known the family). Holding and rubbing the dog against her. Well... I'm not sure what has happened to this place. Used to be the best breakfast spot in the area. My grandparents used to be regulars. The service is still excellent. Friendly wait staff who know your name and order if you're a regular. However, like most places, the food prices have skyrocketed in the last 6 months -- which generally isn't a big issue -- however, the food quality has really suffered. A few months back I had my usual -- an omelette, cottage cheese, and a biscuit & gravy -- the omelette was overcooked and rubbery. Thought, perhaps, the cook had a bad morning (we all do, occasionally)... However, today, I experienced the same issue... an overcooked, rubbery omelette. The atmosphere here is very "local diner" and often you'll see groups of regulars. There's nothing wrong with the atmosphere or the service... it's the quality of the food. Employees are often heard lamenting other employees being out leaving them shorthanded. Open 5 AM-2 PM, they are focused on breakfast and lunch with traditional diner cuisine. Got here before opening, and was the first one in the door. They opened precisely at 6:00am on a Monday. My server was Amy, and she made this experience perfect. Even if you don't experience Amy's customer service, you'll still love this place. Cozy, warm wood grain everywhere. Fresh coffee smell first thing in the morning. Very clean establishment. The prices are amazing. My omelet was a 3 egg, with cheddar and bacon mixed in. It's typical to get the choice of hash-browns or country potatoes with an omelet, but in addition to these choices, I was also provided with 2 biscuits and gravy, or English muffin, or a fruit cup, or any toast of my liking. I chose the biscuits and gravy, and it did not disappoint. Entire plate was slathered with what seemed like homemade gravy. Biscuits were full size, like the ones you would make yourself out of a Pillsbury container. Hash browns were ACTUALLY browned! Not soggy, and not burnt. A+ 11 for all this? Astounding. This entire morning has bested any Dennys, IHOP, Perko's, or Mimi's experience I have had. This place is exactly what you hope a Denny's breakfast would provide you, but somehow always disappoints. If you're coming through Modesto in the morning, or starting your day in the area, stop on by. It is near the 'Water Wealth Contentment Health' sign, so a little out of the way for most... but so worth the driving time. I tried this place with my husband and son this morning for the first time and we loved it. The food is great, the portions are huge and they cooked my eggs perfectly. The service was really great the ladies who helped us were all very sweet and patient. At first blush it does look a little run down but it's very clean and feels very comfortable. If you're from Turlock and you miss the waffle shop that was on west main come give this place a try. It's very reminiscent of that. read more

One of my favorite breakfast spots in Modesto. Always great service and the waitresses are always very friendly and attentive. We attend a monthly meeting at the Old Mill. I've learned to be very careful about what I order as many dishes go right through me. Today I ordered a half BLT with fries. One half of the sandwich was the dry heel of the bread. Really? Who serves a restaurant sandwich on a heel of bread? A quiet, clean, classic American diner situated in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, the Old Mill hosted us today with the grace and sincerity that characterizes the people of the Central Valley. We were on a return trip from Los Angeles (where I had one of the most bizarre dining experiences of my life--see my review of Swingers Diner) and after our meal it was a quick and easy choice to write a review that shares this understated gem just off Highway 99. Arriving on a Wednesday morning, the parking lot was ample and, reassuringly, nearly full. Inside, the restaurant's lighting and decor were welcoming, with a bank of windows filling the room with natural light. As welcoming were the staff, particularly Amy and Savannah, who sat and served us. Bright-eyed and cheery, Amy was an excellent introduction to the restaurant, and brought a cup of Joe in a playful, bright green coffee cup. Savannah approached the steps of service with ease, offering time for us to decide on our order. When asked her guidance for first-time patrons, Savannah shared a charming story of how the kitchen's handmade Chili Verde helped her through her pregnancy cravings--a dish she still enjoys multiple times a week years later. It was the kind of recommendation you would be a fool to ignore, so I gladly ordered the omelette. The kitchen was quick, and my Chili Verde omelette came with perfectly flavored country potatoes and a side of hollandaise--all satisfying--as was the generous side of biscuits and gravy that I had to take home to enjoy later. My partner's waffle and bacon smelled incredible across the table, and Savannah's attentive service meant that my coffee cup was always more than half full. With portions as large as their hearts, the Old Mill Cafe is a welcome respite of warmth and hospitality.
