Old Creamery Cafe is a nice small town restaurant. I just missed breakfast on a Saturday. The parking lot was almost full, which is always a good sign. The service is fast and polite. The sound level was medium to low at a busy time. The food was exactly what I expected and was tasty. I'll be back. I'm not sure why there are the negative reviews. We stopped in here on a road trip. It was about what I expected from a truck stop restaurant off the highway; the food was fair but pretty overpriced. I wouldn't expect this place to wow you, but if you need something quick and easy off the highway, this will do the trick. I will say that the restaurant was cute! Tried this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend, and despite the overall Yelp rating. The decor is very interesting, and there are plenty of old treasures to look at and figure out what they are. We had friendly and good service. We ordered an omelet, country fried steak, and the buffet. The omelet and country fried steak were both very good and came out hot and fresh. One of the over medium eggs came out slimy, so that was left uneaten. The buffet was okay. The caramel roll and biscuits & gravy were excellent. The rest was okay. Small town cafe with lots of character off the freeway in Rice, Minnesota. Lots of kvetch everywhere. They were accommodating our large bicycling group, sweaty after a hot ride. I didn't take lots of photos of food since the majority of riders did the all-you-can-eat buffet. Our food was good, plenty and even included a ice milk machine afterwards! read more

I don't understand the 2.8 star reviews about this cafe. This is the finest small town restaurant I've ever eaten at and believe me I stop at many places. The food, service and atmosphere are the best. This is easily a 5 star small town restaurant and you owe it to yourself to stop in and experience what this place has to offer. read more

We just dropped in as a pit stop on the way further north. The small breakfast buffet was perfect. Just a few standard items, yet satisfying! But the Caramel Rolls? AMAZING! Homemade. Twice now I've left this restaurant after being told I couldn't order breakfast at 10:30 in the morning. I ordered steak and eggs, hash browns and toast. The waitress told me she had to ask. The cook said no, I told the second waitress that the first waitress had just fucked her out of a $20 tip, and I left. Suddenly, Old Creamery has a sign out front; "Steak and egg special served all day!" It still took me two years to come back. This morning I ordered steak, eggs, hash browns and toast. The waitress said "I don't know, I'll have to ask." I warned her "You tell him that Perkins is 15 minutes away, and this will be the second time I've walked out of your restaurant after being told I can't have breakfast." She told the cook "He's trying to order steak and eggs!" He shook his head saying "I don't know" and made eye contact with me. I walked out, and I won't be back. How hard is it to pull some eggs out and cook them? It was 10:15 am! Long story short? Perkins is only 15 minutes away. Save yourself some trouble. I took my young son there to treat us on my birthday. BIG mistake! They had a fish buffet and I love fish. The waitress came in panicked and gave us our menus. I wanted the fish buffet and my son ordered a hamburger plate. The waitress was angry because I didn't know what I wanted to drink right away, dashed away frazzled and never came back. My son's burger was done and sat on a shelf for 40 minutes. The buffet didn't have any fish, and I couldn't get the waitresses' attention when she ran past my table. I thought they were waiting on the fish before serving the burger. They served the burger and the waitress ran away before I could say there was no fish. When I saw people go up to the buffet I followed because I thought the fish came in. There was none. A girl went to the buffet and come back to a table of six with an empty plate, shaking her head no. I gave in and ate the wild rice like everyone else, because I was so hungry. The waitress came, never checked on our food nor took a drink order; she cleared our plates and gave us the check. I said there is no fish. She replied, "Oh you want more fish?" I said, "No, I never got any fish." The waitress immediately caused a scene, yelled at me, pointed to the buffet and said, "Oh there's only been people going up to the buffet all afternoon!" Yes they were eating rice and salad like me! They're hungry too! Over an hour and 1/2, they finally brought the fish out and my son had been done eating for a while. When I paid my bill the waitress didn't even apologize. I said, "Its OK to make a mistake, it's how you handle it that counts." She gave me the angriest look and left me at the cash register. I followed her and she waved her arms up in the air and swung her head back and forth; from the back she looked like R2-D2, caused another scene and yelled to the cook, " You deal with her! I had enough of her!" so the whole cafe heard her. -I never did anything except want time to order a drink, wanted fish on the buffet within the hour, and said "mistakes were OK ." The owner was a complete jerk about this and defended the waitress. I since won a gift certificate but could not bring myself to go back there. Happy Birthday to me! read more

We stopped by the Creamery after church yesterday, wore our masks & sat down. We were asked what we wanted to drink almost before we sat down. They had a buffet that was excellent, anything you could possibly want. The strawberries on the fruit bar were the biggest & sweetest I have ever had. Our waitress, Michelle, was very attentive and very nice & personable. She came back several times to chat & remove our plates. One person at the salad bar at a time because of covid was never a problem, never had to wait. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting great food & great service - make sure you have Michelle wait on you & you will be a perfect meal. read more

My husband and I thought we'd found the worst roadside diner in MN when we lunched at Olivia's Family Restaurant in Owatonna, but later this summer we found the Old Creamery Café. Not going to trust Google Maps again! At Olivia's the food seemed like it was dropped from some food-service drone, despite the location in America's heartland. At least Olivia's was very clean. Here the food just seemed like it had been cooked in decades-old grease. The whole place smelled of grease. The breakfast buffet was abuzz with flies. The dining room near the entry has too many tables and too much kitsch (also looking dirty and dusty, maybe the "old" in the name was a clue?). The ladies' room was passable, but my husband said the men's was smelly. Ugh, ugh. Would give this 1 star except for the cheerful staff who were clearly trying their best. Depressing. read more

The waiter was good, but the steak was cooked from old meat, grey all the way through and jiggled like jello. Unappetizing.

We live in Rice and go here maybe 1x a month or so. Food is great if you order off the menu. I wouldn't recommend the buffet at all though. The service has always been great and friendly. They do have a lot of cool things displayed, but they could use a good wipe down and cleaning. I love it. Just don't get the buffet. read more

This was the perfect stop for some comforting Minnesota food. The decor made me feel like a kid again. My husband ordered an omelette which he loved and I had the chicken and wild rice soup. It hit the spot. Our server was very sweet and attentive. We will stop again next time we drive through. read more

I hate this restaurant so much. It's seriously disgusting. Everything is super old and kind of smells and there's junk all over every surface. Lunch for four is $30... And it shows by the food. Eating here is like dinner at my grandma's house (Note: grandma had 11 kids and is notoriously a quantity-over-quality kind of gal). Wth kind of a diner doesn't have a salad on the menu?! They do have a salad bar... You get iceberg lettuce with ham, eggs, cheese, and olives. Hope you're into a salad straight out of 1984... Oh, with Ranch or Western. Because those are your options. I'm a little bitter about the salad situation if you can't tell. We also had the opportunity to serve ourselves water out of our very own pitcher! Which had flecks of dried food all over it. Gag. My husband and I love to come here on our way home. The kids love looking at the old items that make the fantastic vintage decor all of which my husband can name and tell them what it was used for it's like a trip back in time. The staff is always friendly and accomidating and the food is good. I have some of the other reviews on here and can honestly say that the resteraunts name is perfect fit for this little gem. It may be a little out dated but it is definitely a good sample of down home MN nice. With all of the COVID-19 they were observing safe distance and safety practices. Food seems to get worse every time we eat here. Last time my husband got a quarter chicken special. He got 2 microscopic pieces of hard chicken skin and bones. My mashed potatoes were hard/cold and green beans were canned/ overcooked/ ice cold. Chopped steak was tough as nails and dry. We probably won't eat here anymore. Service was horrible! I had to ask for drinks everytime a glass was empty. And she took our glasses to refill with water and mixed up whose glass belonged to who and instead of getting us new ones just placed them on the table and said sorry...WTF. My husband and I ordered the walleye (I ordered broiled and he ordered fried) and it came with a potato and salad bar. Well first off there was a bug in the salad bar. When our food came the fried walleye was on par with a VanDeKamp's fish stick and the fries were limp and tasted like they were undercooked and freezer burned. Wonderful food and wonderful service! This little cafe is all about home town cooking! The food is home-style cooking at its best! The wait-staff was also kind and friendly.
