I've been a Kay's fan for over a decade at this point. I don't think I've ever been disappointed coming here. I prefer their breakfast to their other items, but that's just because it's very hard to beat. The breakfast is one of the best in Central MN. They also have some absolutely bomb pie. If you are wanting a place for breakfast, this is it. We absolutely loved their menu. I've never seen so many options just for breakfast. Have you ever seen 14 types of omelets?? And it's not just breakfast, they have sandwiches, wraps, salads, and burgers on the menu too. Since it was the weekend we went, they also have the option for a small breakfast buffet. The food came out so fast! We went for the omelets. The veggie omelet was soooo good. It came with a big side of hash browns. I only wished these were a little crispier. I also tried a side of biscuits and gravy. I did not care for the gravy on the biscuits though. The inside is your basic, ole diner. Small with an older feel to it. Yikes. If you go here eat breakfast because I've had better burgers at a little league concession stand. This was a rare miss for yelp and also for the parking lot test. My burger was not fully cooked, tasted like burnt onions from the grill and the iced tea was "instant" as in not fresh brewed. I really just cannot get behind this place. read more

Honestly fantastic service! However, I was disappointed with the quality of the food. You could taste and see the food was not all prepared in the homemade fashion of a true kitchen. Stopped by for lunch and pie. Tried the chili first. It was good and seemed home made which is always good. Wasn't the best but wasn't bad by any means. For my meal I got the carnitas open faced sandwich. I knew it wouldn't be seasoned authentically of course but also didn't expect the random pieces of bacon ham and sausage patty in it. It was supposed to have pulled pork,mushrooms, onions and peppers on sour dough bread. The bread was pretty soggy which wasn't appetizing to me but the pork was tasty. Food took a while to get as well. Watched as others got their food before me. Maybe the pulled pork takes longer. Took some pie to go which was pretty good. Wanted the peanut butter fudge but they were out. So got the French Sill and Almond Joy pie. The almond joy pie had a tough chocolate filling. Decadent but not the best. The French silk has alcohol in it for sure. I liked it but it's definitely a surprise. Wasn't expecting that. I know there's a lot of good food here and I'll come back and try other things. Everything was lovely. The sausage in the biscuits and gravy seemed to be cut up pieces of a sausage patty (some prefer the crumbles/ground sausage), but the taste was excellent. Two of us got the cake special- one with pancakes, one with French toast. Both were great. Eggs were done to our liking (over easy and over medium). This was our first time trying a caramel roll as well. A must try. Wish we could have take a pie home, but we had a size hour drive to make!! read more

I said "I have to make sure I have enough Ketchup", the gal handed me a bottle of Ketchup and said "this should be enough". I stopped in on a recommendation and I am happy I did. The place is quaint and charming all in the same breath but the smells coming from the open kitchen to the breakfast buffet made my mouth water. The staff seated me promptly and I sat next to the breakfast buffet bar. Had to check that out and it looked and smelled wonderful. The thick cut bacon almost lured me into ordering. I did end up ordering a type of scramble that came out heaping high with eggs and goodies folded into the dish. Topped it off with a Tiger sauce they had for an added kick. The meal was tasty and loved all the perfectly cooked tidbits and flavors were well balanced. About a month ago my boyfriend had come here with his family, and on his way home to Illinois brought a caramel roll for me, even next day it's still unbelievably sweet and gooey, I can't tell you how many people I've told at this point. My friend and I stopped into Kay's Kitchen for brunch on Christmas Eve. Surprisingly, it wasn't as busy as I imagined it would be. We seated ourselves and were given menus within minutes. They have a brunch buffet for $9.99 on Saturday and Sunday which is great if you're bringing a family in for a nice meal. They had a good selection of sausage, eggs, french toast, and pie. Word on the street is, this business is known for their homemade pies. I chose a 6 oz. medium well done sirloin steak ($9.39) with tater tots and my friend got the banana crepes. She thoroughly enjoyed her crepes, although the crepes were smaller. The waitress did let her know they would be smaller, but she still felt they tasted terrific nonetheless. As for my sirloin steak, it wasn't great. It wasn't bad but far from the best I've ever had. Had it not been for the sauteed onions, the entire dish would have lacked flavor. The tater tots were crisp to perfection, so I give them an A+. I do plan to come back to Kay's to try some more options on their menu. read more

Kay's Kitchen is the epitome of a small town diner. Around 11 or noonish today the joint was jumpin'. We had to wait a little while to be seated and the hostess apologized multiple times (though we were content to watch the hustle and bustle of the kitchen area). When we were seated, we had plenty of time to peruse the menu (I had enough time to switch my order 2 or 3 times because how do you pass up pancakes, but what if you really want to try those loaded hash browns?). Coffee mugs are generously sized and there are plenty of people bustling to warm up your coffee as you're drinking. I had the Johnnie hash browns which were delightfully crisp at the bottom and loaded with cheese on top. I even opted for the tiger sauce which was a very good decision. It was a little crowded up by the cash register, but negotiating with the other guests for room to sign my check wasn't too difficult. Standard American diner with bar seating and leather booths in the back. I chose to sit at the bar and the waitress was very attentive. I opted for an omelet for dinner, although they had a buffet starting when I got there. The omelet was alright. I've had better and I've had worse. It was a bit greasy for my liking but the fresh avocado was a nice highlight. I got a piece of French silk pie to go and the waitress boxes it up with a plastic fork for me since I was staying at a nearby hotel. The pie was amazing. Very silky smooth and tasty! Used to love this place, but will probably never go back. We tried to have breakfast here this Saturday and have never been treated so rudely. It was very busy and there was a wait to be seated, instead of seating in the order that people came in they randomly gave people in the back of the line tables. We were a party of two, they gave two boys in back of us a table for 4, but then refused to give us the next table for 4, and gave it to a party if three that just walked in the door. We waited 15 minutes and got mad and left after they refused us 2 tables. Will never waste my time or money there again. read more

Now this is a Great Place to eat. Saw the billboard for it on the way home from vacation. Big piece of pie so we knew we had to stop. The staff was friendly. They had their buffet going on at the time and if I was hungrier, I would have gone for that. Everything looks great that they had. All very hot and looked awesome. I decided to have something smaller tho. I had their Salmon BLT. I am so glad I did. That was one of the best sandwiches I have had. It wasn't too heavy. Just right. The taste of it was perfect. It wasn't greasy at all. The fries that came with it was also very good. We had to of course get the pie, but we got it to go. It did not disappoint. It was such a great dessert. If we lived closer, we would be there quite a bit more often. I really liked this place a lot. read more

Places like Kay's Kitchen are rare these days. Small towns are overrun with chain restaurants and it's getting harder and harder for small business to thrive. So I was really happy to find out about Kay's while I was in town for work. I ate here a few times and had breakfast and lunch entrees. I like straightforward breakfast and the combos were a good choice. I like my hash browns crispy and they actually came out that way! The chicken fried steak was my choice for lunch. Someone suggested trying the chili, which was good, but had beans in it, so no, not REAL chili, but okay. Pro-tips: it gets busy at lunch, so try to avoid those peak hours or you may have trouble finding parking. There's a buffet, which is good if you're in a hurry. Have eaten at Kay's since I was a kid, used to be really good, now not so much. This review is about 2 separate experiences I've had about a week apart. The only thing I order there is a sausage egg and cheese bagel. For some reason the people that do the cooking there decided to stop toasting the bagels, now I dont know that many people that eat raw untoasted bagels, especially on a breakfast sandwich. Last week the bagel was untoasted and had barely any egg on it, this week the bagel was untoasted and hard like it was stale on the bottom! What the hell? I called to see what was up and the annoying older lady who is very rude anyway told me to tell them to toast the god damn bagel! Um...isn't that your job? This has never been an issue before...so now I will just stick to Brigettes!! Update.... someone personally came into my place of business and gave me an appology and a gift card!! read more

Delicious food. Exactly the "mom & pop" you crave. We had breakfast here. The omelette are PACKED with ingredients. Hash browns are crispy. Thick bacon, good coffee. We had Jean as our server. From an online article, we learned she has been there since 1978. She gave awesome service. Although it was early and not yet full of customers, the food delivery was extremely quick. This place is great. It's not the cheapest diner in the world, but the food is excellent and the portions are typically American (aka enormous). There's rarely a wait, the service is almost too friendly, and every omelette and skillet I've tried has been top notch. As a former diner cook, I especially appreciate the fact that Kay's does not rush their hash browns. When you order browns later in the day, the cook won't have any half done on the grill already, as they would during the rush. They have to start with frozen shreds and they simply take a while to get properly crispy - 15 minutes, at least. It's easy to just toss greasy, soft, undercooked browns onto a plate and move on to the next order, but whoever has cooked my inevitably late-morning breakfasts has never rushed the hash browns. My wife and I ate breakfast here while in town on vacation. Great find!! The wait staff were excellent. Very attentive and seemed cheerful in the process. I had a twist on the benedict with hash browns instead of the english muffin. I think I'll go back and have that again. They also have a salmon benedict that sounds really good.
