We enjoyed our dinner at the Old Abalone Pub in the Westport Hotel. We both opted for Chef William Alonzo's 4-course dinner ($55 each). We enjoyed corn chowder with a dinner roll; strawberry salad; sole fish served over jasmine rice, and mixed vegetables. Every dish was super delicious. The dessert on the menu was peaches and cream cake, but unfortunately, they were out of it, so we ordered the berry cobbler instead. The cobbler was served with ice cream and was very good; it almost made me forget about the peaches and cream cake. The service was great; the servers were friendly and attentive. The dining room is cozy; we had a lovely table from which we could see out to the ocean. Definitely a great meal and a great experience. read more

This was the lone restaurant in the area but it did not disappoint! We tried the Crab Bruschetta - a first for us and it was delicious. My husband had the Alfredo pasta and he was happy with his meal. I had Steamed Clam Pasta and boy oh boy.... I have yet to see someone load so many clams up this dish! The pasta was mildly and perfectly seasoned! I don't think I have tasted a better plate of Vongole (aka Clam Pasta) in my life and I have had a few of them! We've lived here forever and never went to Westports Abalone Pub. We decided to try it out yesterday evening with our daughter and son-in-law. They have a full bar. We ordered calamari and roasted cauliflower for starters, then my husband ordered cioppino, I ordered the special which was a crab stuffed crepe, my daughter had the prawns and chips and son-in-law had the pork loin. As usual we tasted each other's food and gave it 5 stars. We will definitely go back again we're just sorry we didn't get the Chef's name. read more

We headed to Abalone Pub in Westport at about 5 pm on a rainy Saturday evening at the beginning of June. We made reservations the day before. We were seated next to the window, probably the best spot in the house looking out at the ocean and the falling rain. We were greeted and seated the moment we arrived. We had two servers and both were friendly and accommodating. We ordered a four-course meal that consisted of a corn chowder in a creamy coconut milk base, a strawberry spinach salad, a crusted baked sole with a tasty dil sauce over seasoned vegetables and rice, and a made-to-order baked berry cobbler that we enjoyed with a couple glasses of Semillon white wine. Everything was delicious. As we looked out the window from our table, the light grey rain-filled sky blended into the dark grey ocean beneath it. It was an enchanting evening. read more

First time eating there, it was a family dinner with cousins from Alaska. Our food was awesome, three of us had the Steamed Clams Pasta, one had a Combo plate with fish and shrimp and two had Fish and Homemade Potato Chips. There were no complaints anywhere! Wow, what coastal gem! On a father-son road trip up the coast we went a little late in the evening and needed a bit of dinner before turning in. This is important because you MUST arrive and order before 8:00 PM! We arrived at 8:01 and there was a debate over whether we could eat (we even had someone call ahead); in the end they offered to make us burgers and fries. From there, everything was great! Doting service, charming atmosphere, live music and great burgers and fries. The rest of the menu looked mouthwateringly delicious and made us wish we could come back! We love going to Westport, we love the hotel and we love sitting in the Pub gazing out at the Pacific Ocean. 5 stars. I just wish we loved the food and service. 3 stars. In general, the prices are steep for what is put before you - in my opinion, the food is either tasty or underwhelming and bland and if you happen to be there when their lead servers aren't working, service will be slow (and it doesn't matter if the restaurant is nearly empty). Our Air BNB hosts recommended the Abalone pub to us. It did not disappoint. I ordered a house made pasta. Linguini that was really light. It came smothered in a cream sauce that was delicious. Locally sourced veggies that were cooked to perfection and topped with chicken. The dish was fantastic. My wife had a locally sourced organic salad with goat cheese, peaches, prosciutto, mixed greens, pepitas and a vinergerette dressing that she loved. For desert we had a delicious cheese cake and some Ice cream. They have a good selection of beers and drinks. The menu has a good selection of different options. The chef here seems to be knocking it out of the park. The two ladies working the bar and serving tables were so very friendly, helpful and had a great sense of humor. Definitely recommend stopping for dinner if you go through Westport. read more

We love staying in Westport and do our best to support local business wherever we travel. The Abalone Pub was open for takeout only when we were there, which is completely understandable with the effects of COVID still impacting small business. I spoke with Tabby on the phone and she was so helpful and nice! She even texted me a memo for convenience! When we walked down to the Pub to get our food I was disappointed they weren't open for sit down. The interior is so beautiful. I can just imagine what it's like when full service is available. Tabby was just as pleasant in person as she was on the phone. She chatted with us the whole time we waited for our food. My husband ordered grilled fish tacos, I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and a piece of cheesecake for dessert. When we got our food back to our Airbnb, the fries for the burger were missing, my husband ended up with fish & chips and the piece of cheesecake was the tiniest sliver and looked like it came from a 6" round. We honestly were too lazy to call back and fix the order so we ate what we had. The cheeseburger was good. My husband said the fish and chips was okay. Things that made this dinner weird/awkward/generally bad: - The waiter told us that they had a new cook and so our dinner would be slow to arrive, with dramatic eye roll. Dude, put a spin on it that makes it sound like your restaurant is competent. (Or at least offer a drink on the house or something, if you know dinner will take an eternity.) - Magically, people who were friends with another person working (the manager, I think) got their appetizers and entree before we got our food, even though they came in after us and others who were waiting. They got the same appetizers as we did so I don't think it was an issue of cook time. - When we did get our food, appetizers and entree came out all at once. Not a huge deal, but is kind of annoying. - The food wasn't that great. Including the yam fries which people had raved about. Overview: if you're visiting Westport, you probably aren't there first and foremost for the food. So skip this place, get yourself a slice of pizza from the grocery/deli next door, and focus on the gorgeous landscape! read more

This place rules. They could just phone it in, being the only shop in town, but they don't. Crab/shrimp cakes were incredible. Fish and chips were legendary. Beer selection is a little light, but the choices are all top-notch. Sunday brunch was about as good a brunch as I've had, benedict on biscuits and some of the best bacon I've ever wrapped my teeth around. This was a pleasant experience. Somewhat small interior, with a few tables for dining and a bar with stools. I typically prefer the bar in any restaurant to be farther from the dining seating, but given that this is a small place, I was understanding. The staff was very friendly and eager to help. I enjoyed some beer while seated at the bar. While there, I observed the attention to detail regarding the cleaning of the glassware. This is something I always appreciate because glassware is often neglected and what passes for "washing" or "clean" in the food industry is a joke most of the time, yet something you just have to accept. So, needless to say, I was pleased to see such effort put into cleaning the glassware. There was a live performer, a young man playing guitar. He performed some Spanish songs. I'm not sure how often they have performers, but my visit was on a Friday, so I would guess it's most likely a weekend occurrence. The town is very small, and I can't imagine them being very busy during the week. I didn't order dinner, just an order of ceviche to accompany my beer. The ceviche was very tasty and I was happy with it. I did take a look at the plates of food being served, and they looked delicious. I intend to visit Westport again, and to return to this place so I can try dinner here. read more

If you're already visiting Mendocino or Fort Bragg, just drive about 15 more miles up north on Hwy. 1, and stop by this place on a Fri or Sat evening, or Sunday brunch time! You won't be disappointed. We did just that one Sunday, and landed in this tiny town (but gorgeous hotel and pub) at about 1pm. We saddled up to the bar and promptly ordered an ale (husband) and a latte (me). We enjoyed reading the paper as a local lady played the piano in the joint. (The bartender/waitress was a gem; so sweet, lightly chatty, and accommodating to us.) We then decided to order some brunch food to share--and it was amazing! We got a lightly breaded fish dish, accompanied with a roasted/stuffed tomato, a couple of savory potato-y pancakes, and some artfully skewered fresh fruit and berries! We even treated ourselves to a slice of homemade cheesecake with blueberries after that. It was probably the tastiest, made-with-love meal I've had in a long time. I'm looking forward to going back, staying for a night in the adjoining hotel, and spending both a Saturday night (wine!), and Sunday late morning (food!) at this pub. read more

We had high tea here last winter and it was amazing. This review is about our dinner we had last nite. I enjoy the coastal community where I live. The staff here recognized us and that is a nice thing love our local folks. Our meal started off with a shrimp cocktail and chips. The shrimp was bland but the sauce on it was so delicious and the chips homemade and yummy. I don't blame the staff for bland shrimp sometimes shrimp is bland. I had potato leek soup and it was lovely and creamy. It was perfectly seasoned. For my entree I had fish tacos. The fish was battered but not greasy. You could really taste the fish. The guacamole was so good with it. I would love to just buy a bowl of that to go. Yummy. Hubby had the chicken it was ok but it came with tons of zucchini which believe it or not was kind of overwhelming. The chicken was tender and lightly seasoned and it was a big plate of food. For dessert we shared a berry crisp with ice cream. You have to wait 15 minutes for it as they fresh make and bake them per order. It was so worth the wait so yummy. I love the mock tails they serve. They are quite creative. They only serve beer and wine but u can get quite creative with sparkling wine cranberry juice and candied hibiscus flowers or nice muddled raspberries with a fine brut rose with a hint of grapefruit juice and oranges quite luscious. The pub is only open 3 days a week and we usually go in the winter as work takes me away from my locals but I encourage visitors to go eat at Old Abalone Pub. read more

What a gem!!! Gorgeous little pub off the front of a quaint Inn. Careful detail put into every aspect of the decor, finished off with a gorgeous wood bar. Arrive before sunset, get a beautiful house made Sangria or Muddle and watch the sun fade into the Pacific off the beautiful Westport Coast. Trusting our gracious server, who commented on how pleased she was to have our company (even though our party of 6 arrived 20 minutes before closing,) we stuck with house recommendations all the way through and ordered strictly off of the special menu. The Clam Chowder being our favorite, with freshly made salads a close 2nd. The crab cakes lacked flavor, even with the aioli. Otherwise, absolutely no complaints. read more

Every time we have been in Westport it has been at New Years when this restaurant is closed. We were very glad we could experience it this time! We both had the 4 course special,which we could have very well have shared. First course was butternut squash soup made with coconut milk (great), the salad was outstanding! Peaches, goat cheese, greens, prosciutto and toasted sunflower seeds. Main course very fresh fish topped with a crab sauce (not really a sauce but chunks of crab), served with fresh mixed veggies and jasmine rice. What a sweet sweet place. They recently reopened (apparently they lost a chef) and things are looking good. I was bummed that an item I wanted was not on the menu, but that happens when you are getting your sea legs. I ordered the fish tacos and they were awesome. We had a seat right by the large picture window and watched a few whales off the coast. Not bad dinner time entertainment. The town of Westport is a rustic charmer too. As the only game in town restaurant-wise, it would be easy for the folks at the Old Abalone to lower their standards, and they absolutely don't. I was excited about coming here because the reviews were so good. We walked in and were asked if we had a reservation. We did not, but the place was pretty much empty.....interesting. We set at a table that had a great view of the ocean and the woods behind the pub. That is where the good part stopped. The service was slow and below average. It took at least 10 minutes just to get a refill on water.....and it wasn't that busy. The food was very very average. My husband had the covelo burger. We have had covelo beef before and I can BBQ it much better. I had a crab quesadilla. It was just ok and I think I am being generous. We rent a house in Westport often and I don't think we will bo coming back to this pub. read more

We were camping for the weekend in Westport and found out the Old Abalone Pub was open on the weekends. We got a great table with a spectacular view of the ocean. The interior of the restaurant had a beautiful bar and dark wood throughout. You really felt like you were in an old pub, but it had a lot of natural light so you didn't feel like you were in a cave. The waitress was so nice (she actually directed us over to the larger table with the window to look out after we had chosen a smaller one with no view) and the food was well prepared. I had the roast chicken that came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I love that it came with zucchini! It tasted so good as did my berry sangria. We were made to feel so comfortable there and were so glad we came in. I definitely want to come back again! read more

We had dinner here on 18 June 2011 and had a lovely experience. It's the sort of place that we would have ordinarily zipped past on Hwy 1, but thankfully, it had been recommended to us by a local. It has a lovely setting with large windows- we lucky to sit right next to one of them and enjoy a lovely sunset over the ocean. We ordered the following: - Layered polenta dish with bell pepper sauce (vegetarian) - good although I found the sauce to be slightly bland (this came with a small portion of blue cheese salad, which was okay) - Seared ahi tuna with ginger risotto and bok choy - very good (this came with a cup of butternut squash & ginger soup, which was nice) - Bread Pudding - Superb - Coffee - Excellent Although it was slightly expensive ($70 for 2 people) and the portions were on the smaller side, one doesn't expect to find such a fine place in a sleepy little town like Westport. We will try to have breakfast/brunch here the next time we are in that area and try some more of their desserts! read more

Husband and I ate here while staying at the nearby Howard Creek Ranch Inn. We were weary from a long day of driving, and didn't expect to find anything noteworthy in the tiny town of Westport...what a great surprise the Abalone Pub was! It is charming and warm inside (but not stuffy), the service was very friendly, and the food was fantastic. The menu was a small but thoughtful selection of upscale pub fare, with an emphasis on locally grown vegetables and meats. We both had a special-- flatiron steak with a light blue cheese sauce, with sauteed butternut squash and some lightly wilted farm greens. It was simple, executed well, and very tasty. Oh--and there was an acoustic guitar player playing some quiet jingly jangly dinner music too! Nice touch. This place is a great find and the hotel looks like it is pretty charming as well--would stay there next time. read more

My goodness! Who knew such a gem was in such a small town! We made reservations, but they weren't needed at 7pm. However, within 30 min, the placed was full! There was a flamenco guitarist playing that was amazing. The service was fast and very friendly. Everything on the menu looked great. Nothing was boring or usual. There were the usual proteins but accompanied with fabulous flavor combinations. The portions were just perfect. Enough to fill you up, but not so much that you were stuffed. My boyfriend and I shared the peach crisp and it was amazing. Lovely view of the ocean from almost every seat in the pub. A recommendation for ANYONE in the area. read more
