One of my favorite restaurants from my Italy trip. Great vegetarian options! We sat in their beautiful outdoor parklet, and enjoyed a great side of potatoes and a risotto that I still think about from time to time.

June 16: First night in Florence and we could not find our desired restaurant (turns out we're just tired). So we settled on this for our first meal in Italy. Definitely did not disappoint: The appetizers for 2 was a huge board of very good prosciutto, cheeses, pate and pickles. We had gnocchi and a fresh mozzarella salad and they both came with truffles! The grilled pork chop was enormous and the linguini was delicate and perfect. Just the right start for our Italy adventure. Show less

Aw don't sell yourself short, this place is more than ok! I thoroughly enjoyed my spaghetti with eggplant and shrimp. It was a huge portion but I ate every last bite with no shame. Fantastic local beers, good service, and 10% off with Yelp check-in!

Have a scheduled museum tour for later today so I figured I'd wake up early and grab something to eat. It's a good 57 degrees outside with a 90% chance of rain by 9 AM. It's rude to discuss the weather this way, huh? Back to why you're reading this in the first place. So I decided to dine here due to my newfound inclination to review the entirety of Florence before I head back home to California. I had the Big American Breakfast (€10) and sadly was rather disappointed. The manner in which the food is presented is aesthetically pleasing and the attentive nature of the staff makes this place highly commendable but the amount of salt present in my meal left me feeling like I should've chosen a location that caters to the less extreme palate. Here's a breakdown of what's going on: Scrambled eggs: a bit wet but the addition of cheese was pleasantly surprising Sausages: extremely salty Potatoes: tasted processed but considering their shape and color I wasn't too taken aback by this Toast: nice and crunchy- I slabbed on a bit of butter and voilà my favorite Tomato: warm and was a good palate cleanser post-sodium overload Salad: unseasoned but fresh (also helped balance out the amount of salt on the plate) Mushrooms: bland but cooked just right Bacon: really, really salty I'm hoping to return and try a different dish. Maybe American breakfasts aren't their forte and I'm in the wrong? Will post an update as soon as I can.

We stopped here for lunch, but did not want a huge meal. We enjoyed pasta. One order was for Paccheri alla Chianina (large pasta tubes with Chianina style meat sauce, sausage and porcini mushrooms. Delisioso! The other dish was spaghetti all'amatriciana (spaghetti with tomato and bacon). The waiter suggested a nice Chianti which proved to be very nice & inexpensive. We were able to use our Yelp discount. It is a nice, clean restaurant with friendly staff and good food.

Our whole meal was amazing! 2 Americans and 2 Australians traveling together and this has by far been our best meal in Florence. The house wine was one of the better wines we have had so far. And the guys were impressed with the beer selection, they even had some Belgian options which came in large bottle but were good for splitting between 2 guys. We tried the Ribollita soup since it is traditional to the area and it was a hit with everyone in our group! Similar taste to a minestrone but thick with cannellini beans and a bit of spice. Very hearty and delicious. The chicken leg with truffle cream was amazing, as well as the eggplant parm which was much more fresh and less covered in sauce than some of the others we have tried. The standout dish was the Paccheri with meat sauce. A large tube pasta different from what we have seen other places with a great meat sauce. Desserts were also great, tiramisu, apple tart, and the dessert wine with biscuits. I usually shy away from dessert wines since they are often syrupy but this one was excellent and had an apple flavor. We were so impressed with everything that we are planning to go back again to try some other menu items!

A lovely American waitress came over and helped me.(I'm not saying she's lovely because she's American, she just was really friendly) She explained that the cook makes all the poached eggs in one big pot and can't specialize one for a customer. She said they could fry it medium well and that worked for me. The other waitress offered to fry the egg or scramble it but she just wasn't friendly, and she didn't give me all the choices of how I could get the egg fried. That really helped me make my choice. The egg's Benedict came with American pork bacon and not Canadian bacon. The hollandaise sauce was deliciousness, but they give you such a small amount. They need to double it. Another reviewer mentioned how good the green hot sauce was, so I tried it. It was spot on great!! I made sure every bite had the green sauce on it. I usually only like shredded hash browns but their breakfast potatoes were perfect. They weren't hard and had a good flavor. The restaurant was clean but very small. It had a nice relaxing feel. I love to try the food of the country I'm visiting, but after traveling for two weeks it was nice to have something I eat at home. The eggs Benedict was a treat. I had the hot amaretto coffee drink and that just hit the spot and made the waiting to be seated all worth it. The had many types of milk you can put in your coffee, for example, they have soy milk, oat milk, etc. I would definitely recommend this place and come back. Oh and the less than friendly waitress served my food to me with a smile, but she never smiled again and never accepted my thank you's no matter how much I said them. Word of advice don't have a sad face if they can't provide something the way you want it if the waitress is blond and Italian. That will not go over well. You're not allowed to be quietly disappointed.

From the outside, it looks like a grand, iron-and-glass structure typical of European markets; inside, it opens into a bustling, multi-level space filled with food vendors, communal tables, and constant movement. The vibe is energetic, social, and slightly chaotic in a fun way - perfect for grazing, group dining, or trying multiple cuisines in one visit (from Italian to American to Mexican!). We stopped in for a quick lunch at around 2pm on a Wednesday; there was plenty of seating at high-top tables, and QR codes on paper menus make it easy to explore all the different food vendor options. It's also a fun activity to peruse the market, taking in different sights, smells, and flavors. All of us ended up opting for Schiacciatas (large Italian sandwiches that are a staple in Florence) from Massimiliano Parri, which all ended up ranging from €10-12, depending on toppings - yes, it's more expensive than what you'd get from a traditional schiacciateria, but you're also paying for the market's location and convenience. We appreciated the fact that they shave the meat right in front of you! My schiacciata came with freshly shaved ham atop crusty white bread, slathered with burrata cheese, and sprinkled with arugula and figs (I opted for no additional olive oil, since I found the ham quite rich already). I loved the contrast of textures and flavors, though I will say that the bread ended up cutting the roof of my mouth! All in all, Mercato Centrale is a bit touristy, but still miles better (and cheaper) than most "Italian" sandwich places you'd find in the US (pro tip: save your receipt for free use of their bathrooms). The variety can't be beaten, prices are reasonable for a central market, and it's steps from some of Florence's most iconic spots.

American/Aussie owned bakery brunch spot by the river, such a cute little eatery. We loved our visit and though it's definitely more of a touristy spot, as most customers spoke English, the food was delicious to forgo the tourist trappy vibes. We shared a plate and added some items as we didn't want to get too stuffed on our first day of Florence. We had the Nduja Eggs plate with bacon and avocado added. Nduja is a spicy Calabrian pepper spreadable pork sauce, and oh boy was it so flavorful. If I remembered correctly, Melaleuca spread this sauce on top of a fried bread and eggs. I don't see it on the menu at the moment and it's probably a rotatable dish... but it definitely kicked started my hunt for the sauce. Since this is a spreadable pork, it's not something I could bring back to the US but I was able to find it online back home. The service was amazing and the beverages were delicious. Like many Italian places, the dining room is small and bathroom is a single small room that might require a small wait if they're busy. Didn't get to try their baked goods this last time, but definitely on our list to go back for more when we're back to Florence for a visit.

Ordering was interesting. You don't pay at the counter but rather at the corner register for everything to-go. On one of the nights when we grabbed a couple of drinks at Gilli, the server loaded my desserts order on a card that I redeemed to my waiter. Then my desserts were served to me a few moments later. So I had tried ricciarelli at another pasticceria down the street, but Gilli's were far more superior. The almond flavor was more prominent, the texture was much softer, and the powdered sugar wasn't broken. Loved it so much that I got boxes of it for myself and loved ones. I had the pleasure of trying all their "mignons" (mignardises) and was particularly fond of the lemon with pistachios, chocolate passion fruit, and coconut chocolate ones.
