MITSUA Marketplace. A one of a kind shopping experience, even if you are not Asian. This place has so much food, specialty shops, a bakery and a great food court. They also have OSHINBO. Thee best place for Taiyaki. On occasion, I'll run in just for a Red Bean Fish, for my wife, or the Custard option for me. A sweet, smiling lady is pretty much the only one who works there. Oishinbo satisfies my periodic taiyaki cravings. We never leave Mitsuwa without getting a multipack (or two) of treats from this nice little shop. The employees are pleasant and work diligently in spite of the waves of customers that flow through their environment. This is a small store, located inside a large grocery store, alongside an outdoor mall that gets a lot of heavy traffic, particularly on weekends. Patrons should be aware of this and temper their expectations if they're expecting a quick, takeout like experience on a bustling Saturday or Sunday. I live in a different state but would imagine the weekdays being a lot slower. The trick is to stop by there first to place your order. Once you get your ticket/receipt (don't lose it!), take your time to have a meal, peruse the aisles, or visit the other cool stores outside, at your own pace. Don't be that guy/couple/family standing around for 20 minutes, blocking the area while schools of people have to dart around you as they navigate their way through the food court. Moreover, don't also be that guy that then jumps on Yelp to levy a complaint that you had to waste 20 minutes of your overly precious time when that could have been avoided with better time management. Lastly, some advice from an Oishinbo veteran: the batter can get soggy on the ride home. Just throw them in the air fryer for 5+ minutes at 350 to bring them back to new. Go Oishinbo! read more

A good place for anyone with a craving for freshly made taiyaki/Oubanyaki. Oishinbo is located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace right next to the food court. At Oishinbo, you can either order Taiyaki or Oubanyaki in a set or individually. We ordered a set of six which in my opinion is the way to go. The taiyaki are very large and doughy, and the flavor of the red bean filling is sweet but not too sweet. The store was manned by two employees, who were quick in preparing my order. Price wise, these taiyaki are not cheap at a few dollars a piece, but they are also not expensive. Note, they only accept cash for payment. Oishinbo sticks to a traditional Japanese treat without adding too many bells and whistles, but there taiyaki are nonetheless very satisfying. read more

Oishinbo specializes in one of my top favorite treats, imagawayaki! Unfortunately, it is difficult to source delicious ones in the city so whenever I can make the rare trip across the Hudson to Mitsuwa, this little stall is the very last stop I make (so I can enjoy piping hot imagawayaki for the ride home). As everything is made fresh to order, expect a wait which can sometimes be 20-40min during peak weekend hours. Not much has changed over the years (except maybe the price). I personally order the 6 for $15 creamyaki pack. The cakes come with little zodiac animals on either side, and split open to reveal delicious, sweet, and piping hot custard. I usually can't resist these types of street food desserts because the aroma reels me right in. I was so excited for this place the second I walked by the stall but it was an absolute disappointment. I ordered the cream yaki which was about a 10 minute wait but I didn't mind because I knew that meant it would be fresh. When it finally came out, it was very dark and hard in the exterior, seemingly burnt. I took one bite of the outside crust and it was pretty bad. Very bland and dry. I was hoping that after getting to the filling that it would make up for it but sadly, the filling fell short as well. It was slightly sweet but not as sweet as I had expected, to help compensate for the lack of flavor in the crust. Hugely disappointed. I hadn't been there in years but remembered the custard filled taiyaki fondly so being in the area, I made a special trip. After waiting 15 minutes, I was disappointed to receive pastries that were under cooked with raw dough inside the crispy shell. Not only that, the pastry itself was tasteless and the custard overly sweet and still cold even though the outside was hot (I ate one in the parking lot). Cooking them some more in an air fryer helped the raw dough issue but not the flavorless issue. The 2 ladies working seemed to be phoning it in. Never again. Mitsuwa is showing its age. read more

Most people get B.O. under their arms, but my friend Oi gets Shin B.O. I have no idea why his shins sweat so much. This little stand inside Mitsuwa is named after this anomaly. I wasn't impressed by the product at Oishinbo, which appeared to be much like "custard fish" that I tried up in Toronto (at Kevin's Taiyaki), and fell madly in love with. There's also an expensive, hipstery version in Chinatown Manhattan. I forgot the name of it. Here, however, there was a distinct mediocrity about it. They serve not only the custard kinds but also red bean, green bean, and some others. However I'm giving it a healthy four stars because it's cheap, fresh, hot off the "press", it's beloved by the locals, and the service is absolutely wonderful. read more

I can't seem to go to mitsuwa and not stop at this spot and get the pack (6, buy 5 get one free) of tai-yaki or cream yaki. You can ask them to do half and half. The fillings are great and pretty much the same as TK north factory that sometimes comes to mitsuwa as a visiting stall, just with less variety. The actual pastry part of the obanyaki is too hard, thick, and over cooked. They were able to hand over our order (one red bean one custard) in a few seconds (we did not see them actively making any new ones) which makes me think these were not made to order and were just sitting there getting stale and overcooked. I was pretty disappointed in these, especially after having TK north factory whenever I get the chance to stop by when they're here. We also got lychee ice cream which I enjoyed the creamy fluffy texture of, but the flavor was a little too sweet and artificial. The good reviews make me feel like we got unlucky, but these places really should treat all customers the same and have every order be made on the spot. This is a pretty tasty option for dessert at the Mitsuwa Marketplace, but it can't compete with the amazing Black Sesame soft serve at Matcha Love. You may be tempted like I was to get the fish-shaped Tai-Yaki ($1.75), mostly for the novelty factor since it looks cool, but I much prefer the Cream Yaki ($1.75), as it has some deliciously sweet cream inside instead of the red bean filling in the fish one. Both are good though, as they are served piping hot and fresh. It's a little doughy and one note, but it's very tasty for at least the first couple bites. Get this at least once. Taiyaki are nostalgic eats for me. I grew up in Okinawa, and these were one of the treats my parents used to buy for me whenever we stopped by Jusco, Awase Fish Market, or when shopping in Naha. Thus, there was no way I was leaving Edgewater without buying a box for the drive home. From what I saw, Oishinboi sells azuki bean-filled Taiyaki and cream filled Imagawayaki. You could buy them individually or buy the 5+1 box. To my dismay, I did not find any cream filled Taiyaki, which was what I was looking for. Maybe they sold out when I stopped by--I'm not sure. However, these will suffice...for now. The azuki bean filling for the Taiyaki is not too sweet, which is a pleasant surprise. If you're familiar with dorayaki, this is similar except that a fish-shaped waffle replaces the pancake. They are soft when fresh, but do note that if you wait to eat them, the batter has a tendency to get a little chewy. As for the cream filled Imagawayaki ("Cream-yaki"), the custard is perfect. From the sweetness to the thickness, this is exactly what I am looking for. Like the Taiyaki, these are soft, but do get chewy after a while. I'd definitely come back for both.
