If you're in Edgewater, Omusubi Gonbei is located in Mitsuwa Marketplace. This is the place for some quick eats... Grilled Eel & Shrimp tempura rice wraps are good... they have plenty of other variety of Japanese rice balls as well other food to select from as well. They are made fresh daily and it's a small kiosk in the corner. Common seating eating are if you decide to dine in at Mituswa. read more

If you are visiting the Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater, Omusubi Gonbei is an absolute must-visit. It is easily one of my favorite spots there! They specialize in authentic Japanese rice balls, and you can truly taste the difference - they use high-quality rice imported directly from Japan, and it makes for the perfect texture. They offer a huge variety of fillings to choose from, but I definitely have my go-tos. The spicy tuna is always a hit, the kombu (sweet seaweed) has incredible flavor, and you can never go wrong with their classic Spam musubi. Beyond the rice balls, their karaage (Japanese fried chicken) is also pretty good and makes the perfect savory side to pair with your meal. I highly recommend stopping by and grabbing a few of these if you are ever in the area. They make for a perfect quick bite or a full meal! read more

If I'm in Mitsuwa, I usually take the opportunity to get some rice balls at Omusubi. If you're lucky, you'll arrive at the counter with no line but it seems to attract customers like moths to a light. They have different rice balls to choose from - meat and veggie based. The karage chicken and mushroom are probably my favorites. When asked which ones had the most filling they said the "bombs" which are more fish based. I just wish all of them had more balance between filling to rice ratio. Each ball is a solid size and because they run between $2.50-5, you feel pretty good about it. But you'll likely want to sample a few. They don't give soy sauce anymore which isn't a big loss since it's not the good kind anyway. They have also adjusted prices higher because of those darn tariffs and no more pennies (RIP). There's general seating in the Mitsuwa food court. Weekends are not a fun time here unless you get there early especially when they have events and samples. read more

3.7 is pretty accurate. Omusubi Gongbei is an onigiri chain with many locations in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Their two locations in the NYC metro area are inside Mitsuwa Market in Edgewater, NJ and in Katagiri Japanese Grocery close to Grand Central in Midtown Manhattan. The location inside Mitsuwa is essentially a smallish stand, when you enter is directly to the back of the store, within the food court section. There's a counter with an assortment of onigiri in a display case, this location is bigger and has a little more variety than the midtown location, though both are geared towards take out since the onigiri come wrapped in plastic and are easily transported in a paper bag. Like most have mentioned before, the nori (dried seaweed) wrapper comes wrapped around the rice ball, so it's moist and not crispy, and the rice could use a little flavor (though paired with fillings it's ok). I'll say the positives are that the size of the rice balls are quite large for the price, it's hard to find this value in Manhattan these days. The fillings are also decently generous compared to some other places. On my most recent visit I got the Bomb $4.50 (cooked salmon, spicy tuna and kombu) and a Cod Roe $2.80 for takeout and both were good for lunch the next day. My other favorites are regular kombu (marinated cooked seaweed), shiso & plum, and chicken karaage. read more

THE GOOD ---------------- + Ridiculously wide variety of different rice balls for sale here - salmon, spicy tuna, grilled eel, spam, scallop, shrimp tempura and the everrrr popular BOMB (salmon + spicy tuna + kombu) to name a few. + As of 2025, the rice balls are still very, very reasonably priced at $2.50 - $5. + If you want to go all out, get the Bomb or Spicy Bomb rice ball! They'll run $4.50 - $4.80, but so worth it. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Unfortunately, some of the less expensive rice balls can be a little light on the meat (e.g., Chashu Pork) RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = On weekends, the line can get a bit long, but you won't wait more than 3-4 minutes to get to the front. read more

This small onigiri business has a nice variety of different flavors/filling. Pretty cheap costs too! I'd say the rice balls they make taste pretty great. The only issue I can really think of for the food is that sometimes, the inner filling for some of the onigiri they serve can be too little. But other than that, pretty good food. I like to come here and eat the spicy tuna and chashu pork versions usually. Service is usually fast and nice. No problems there. read more

I was drawn to the ladies making Onigiri in the window. They were so skilled and make the process look so easy. There are so many options to choose from. A lot I've never seen before. I wanted something simple and chose the Curry Brown one. I didn't eat it until later in the day and it was delicious. I shared it with a friend and she loved the simple but complex flavors of the curry, corn and edamame. The price was good for the portion and the taste. I have to bring my niece back she is going to love this place!!! Omusubi Gonbei 595 River Rd Edgewater, NJ 07020 (Review 38 in 2024 and 838 overall) read more

LOL the bomb should not be $4.80. It was huge because it was just rice. Very little filling--it's probably only popular for its name. It's okay for a quick carb snack. read more

This is a small corner kiosk inside the Mitsuwa marketplace in Edgewater. They have a large selection of flavors readily available to be picked out. We went on a weekday before noon, so there was no line and went straight up to the counter to order. The lady that took our order was efficient, I was able to communicate with her better in Spanish. They have a nice selection of vegetarian options that are clearly marked by a green sticker on the name. That was extremely helpful, especially when it's the first time here. My friend ordered the tuna mayo and I got the curry brown. The city brown had brown rice with edamame, corn, and curry seasoning. It had a very curry flavor, but since there was not much to hydrate it, it was very dry. I didn't ask for sauce as I wanted to try it as is, but maybe sauce would make this better so that it's not as dry. The price is affordable and reflective of the size, however, as it is rice, it's quite filling. I would definitely come back to try more options and order sauce to accompany it just in case. read more

Pretty good onigiris! They are superr affordable (~$3-5 per onigiri), and are very filling! Service is pretty quick, even when it's busy on the weekend, so make sure you know what you're ordering. The only thing I'd say is that there's a lot of rice in the onigiris, and not a great amount of the filling, but other than that, great for a quick bite! Definitely recommend at least trying one of the onigiris! read more

After shopping, we decided it was lunch time. What better than some onigiri? The new limited edition, Scallop Onigiri was advertised on their Instagram page awhile ago and I couldn't wait to try it. Always crowded and packed with long lines but their onigiris are always delicious. Sometimes cold because while it's made fresh that day, it was made earlier in the day and probably had cooled down and sat at the display all day long. Scallop onigiri- while delicious I was expecting abit more oomph. Very tasty tho. read more

This hole in the wall kiosk at Mitsuwa has great rice balls to pack on the go for roadtrips or when you're just craving a good quick meal. They offer from eel to salmon, spam to sour plum, and all the above! I just wish they weren't so rushed when handling the line. Service is good but it makes me very flustered when they move so fast and don't give me time to think through the different flavors. read more

Huge musubi/onigiri! The best flavor I tried was the spam and egg. The others were also tasty, but the shrimp inside was a little small. They were freshly made and even better warmed up if you brought them home to eat. They're cheap and filling - you can make a meal out of these. They were pretty busy taking orders, so I came back when it calmed down a bit while I waited for my food from another vendor. read more

"Homestyle Onigiri" Ever wonder how onigiri can taste this good? I did too. I tried my hand at making these delightful rice balls at home. Armed with the finest rice, top-notch nori (seaweed), and premium mentaiko, I thought I had the secret recipe down. Spoiler alert: I didn't. There's some sorcery in their rice and cooking method that I just couldn't replicate. Their rice is tangy, chewy, and bursting with flavor in a way that my home efforts could never achieve. So, I surrendered. Why spend hours in the kitchen when Homestyle Onigiri offers perfection at such a great price? Highly recommended! read more

When I'm not in the mood for a meal at the food court over at Mitsuwa, I tend to gravitate towards the Omusubi Gonbei counter in the back. They have a display case full of the different types of onigiri available. If you're not peckish, 1-2 is really all you need. My favorites include their Nitamango ($3.50) which is cylindrical shaped and houses a whole marinated soy egg inside and their Chashu Pork ($2.70). read more

Small corner place to grab some rice balls; good prices and we saw them being made fresh. I like the "Bomb" bec there's a variety of fillings, with some spiciness. Also a good size so enough as a snack. The seaweed wrapper gets soft though bec it is covered with plastic wrap after the riceball is made (unlike some places which has the seaweed separate, until you are ready to put them together). read more

I LOVE omusubi/onigiri and these are just as good as the ones home in Japan. Freshly handmade and with so many choices including brown rice musubi. I bought 18 and gobbled them up!!! This is a little counter inside of a Japanese grocery store Mitsuwa Edgewater NJ. If you need something quick for lunch or dinner, get a few rice balls to go - they're filled with things like grilled salmon, shrimp tempura, char soy pork, and they're only a few dollars each. They also have small orders of fresh Japanese fried chicken and Musubi. They do not take American Express but they do take all other types of payments alongside Apple Pay and other contactless options. You have to pick up a Musubi from here! Bought The Bomb, salmon, and Takana. Honestly wished I bought more. I had my doubts since the seaweed looked soggy and it was only covered in plastic wrap, but I was wrong. The seaweed held up, rice tasted great and the fillings were amazing. Ate one the next day and it was still tasty and held its shape! This is the perfect meal for a quick lunch or even breakfast. All 3 that I ordered tasted great. Decent rice balls for it's price. I think this is the quickest grab and go spot here in Mitsuwa. I only like certain rice balls from Omusubi Gonbei. There are certain rice balls that is blend. My first time having a rice ball, and my first time trying spam ever! I got the salmon rice ball which had sockeye salmon, not a fan of that particular type of salmon. No real flavor, just tasted like salmon. I also got the spam with sweet egg omelet. Okay, this was a winner! Salty smokey spam with a slightly sweet egg omelet, was the perfect combination. Both items had way too much rice though, overpowered the whole thing. If I went back I would only eat the spam one from here, nothing else was appealing. read more

This is a great place if you want to have a quicn and cheap lunch. I got 3 onigiri (salmon, tuna, and eel) for the price of 3 dollars. They were also pretty big. Why the 3 stars? I feel like there was too much rice and not enough filling. There was not a good balance between the two. Also, the filling didnt have that much flavor and mainly tasted like salt. Overall, fair prices for decent riceballs. My sister and I came here a few weeks ago on August 18th, and since we arrived an hour early, most of the shops inside Mitsuwa were still not open, so we decided to look around the marketplace and see what was available. Omusubi Gonbei was one of the first shops that caught our attention and better yet, it was open!! The riceballs for the day were already made and put out on display. They have a pretty large selection of riceballs, though I wish customization was allowed. For example, my sister doesn't eat white rice, and because the only brown rice options were Jaco Brown (boiled & dried sardine with seaweed), Tuna Brown (cooked tuna with spicy mayo), and Salmon Brown (baked Sockeye salmon), she pretty much had to settle for one of them. She ended up getting the Salmon Brown, while I got the Spicy Chicken (chopped chicken with spicy peanut sauce), and while they tasted good, they're not exactly the best riceballs we've ever had. The riceballs at Omusubi Gonbei were considerably larger than some of the other riceballs I've had in the past, but most of their size comes from the rice. Yes, the rice was delicious, but there's wayyyyy too much rice and so little filling. And I swear I tasted more peanuts in my riceball than chicken. Like hello?! It's called Spicy Chicken not Spicy Peanuts for a reason. Anyways, we were hungry and the riceballs served as good appetizers. I wouldn't highly recommend this place or their riceballs, but it's still good. read more

Excellent onigiri place that I visit every time I go to Mitsuwa. Ever since this place opened up they have been fantastic. I highly recommend the mustard green onigiri, the nori and plum onigiri, the mushroom onigiri, and the kombu onigiri. Those are my favorites. I don't think onigiri is a food that everyone will like, but I can't imagine anyone not liking this place if they like onigiri. I love onigiri, and this is some of the best I've ever had, and the portions are very generous. read more

Don't let the photos and ratings deceive you. I have not been more disappointed in a while...there's barely any flavor and meat. It's essentially slightly meat-flavored rice. Highly recommend avoiding this place. Pros: it's pretty cheap. Maybe that's why they're entirely rice. read more
