This place is one of the few quality casual/affordable sushi spots in Houston outside of Bellaire that I continuously come back to. I have been going here for years and never leave unsatisfied. Their happy hour deals on appetizers (buy 1 get 1 free) is such a good deal! The quality of fish is 7-8/10, and their cooked dishes are decent (the sushi is better). Wait times are usually pretty long if you come at peak times (from my experience: lunch, mid happy hour, and late dinner). The service is usually on top of it and they do try to turn over tables fast, but it's a casual spot so don't set expectations super high. Parking is kind of a headache in their main lot, but usually I'm able to find a spot in the lot right next to it. Overall this is a safe spot I find myself returning to if i'm looking for casual sushi.

I'm honestly shocked I haven't written this review yet. I love sushi and Houston has a lot of options. Oishii is one of the few affordable spots left. This restaurant functions without reservations and sometimes the wait is lengthy. They do have decent parking in front of the restaurant and the lot next-door. Their happy hour pricing is amazing. They have a large variety of fish available every day. The quality of the fish is above average for the price (8/10). The staff is attentive and they are trying to turn over tables relatively quickly. I always keep this place in my back pocket for a budget friendly date or meal with friends. I will definitely be back. :)

We waited for our pickup order for over an hour and 30 minutes. We were told they recently replaced their staff, I'm not sure what happened but the new hires definitely need more training. I added an extra star because they added in edamame and gyoza as compensation.

My husband took me out for sushi on my birthday after some shopping. I always remember this little gem by Lakewood Church It had been years since the last time we were here since we live in Humble. We got here around 3:30 and were seated after the lunch crowd finished. Happy Hour started so it was perfect timing to have some Kirin Light beers with our sushi. I was impressed that the prices have remained the same over the years! The sashimi pieces are pretty decent and super cheap. I don't remember the last time I found sashimi for less than $2 a piece! Michael was our server and he was awesome! Overall, Great service all around. Oishii gets busy during lunch and usually has a bit of a wait if you don't get there right when they open. We haven't gone for dinner, but I'm sure it's the same.

Everything is great here all sushi is fresh and the chicken fried rice with beef is great . Small restaurant parking is not great watch out where you park . Service is great and ambiance is regular background talk . I can't remember every g I had but every g was great and freshly made .

This was the special. Only $20 and THICK cut!

This was our second time here. I can't believe that I didn't post the first time. The place is very clean, and the service is awesome. It gets crowded even during week nights; so, you know that this place is great. Tonight we had the special sushi , which was THICK. It was so good. I had the nabeyaki udon, which I haven't had in probably 20 years. It was delicious and authentic. Will definitely return many more times.

Oishii is a popular spot during lunch, happy hour, and during dinner. I would recommend coming in early and with a smaller group since the interior is also on the smaller side. The service is solid and the food comes out very quick, especially considering how busy it can get! While the sushi quality will not blow you away, the sheer value of what they offer certainly will. Their happy hour menu is an excellent deal, allowing you to select two items from the happy hour section for only $6. We also tried some of their nigiri and featured specials, one of the specials being a sashimi plate. I kid you not, I have never seen such thick slices of decent quality sashimi for such an affordable price in my life. The sashimi set even included two very rich, tender, and buttery pieces of bluefin tuna. Other items that I would recommend are the dynamite and spicy salmon rolls from the HH menu, HH tempura, and any special sushi or sashimi plate they currently have.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY OF FISH, AMAIZING PRICES X QUANTITY, AAAAND OUTSTANDING SERVICE Mike is the ROCKSTAR of the crew. He is helpful and friendly and always down to party with your crew as well! Ask him for recs from sashimi to rolls to sake & expect a 100/10 meal. Favorite rolls definitely gotta be the June roll and the salmon one I have a pic of (that roll's name just vanished from my memory in thin air apparently...). Also, ask for their toro - 4 pieces of HEAVEN in your moooouuuutttthhhh.

Got to try the iconic Oishii this past weekend! It literally means "delicious " in Japanese so that was more motivation to try it! My partner and I tried to go a couple of times, but once it was super busy and another time, it was closed. From what I understand it's always pretty busy there. When we came, we had to wait about 30 minutes or so. The dining area is actually kind of small. My friend saw some clean tables, but maybe it was a staffing issue? The people that came after us only waited a few minutes so maybe it's hit or miss depending on when they get the tables ready. The prices are incredible. Very affordable sushi. They have sashimi, sushi rolls and individual pieces and a very extensive menu. I ended up getting two sushi pieces and a specialty maki roll. I also tried the soft shell crab hand roll as well with vegetable tempura. With the tempura, I always love the sweet potato, but sometimes it's not fully cooked and it has some crunch to it. That was the case this time. I like when the sweet potato is fully cooked and soft on the inside. There were onion rings, zucchini, and broccoli as well. The sushi was pretty good overall. I ended up getting the Todd roll which had red snapper in it. Unfortunately I couldn't really taste the red snapper because it was overwhelmed by the salmon and jalapeño on top. Probably wouldn't choose that sushi again, but overall it was still pretty good. Overall, a nice spot, but it took a while to get seated and parking can also be kind of crazy. Honestly, if I go back, it will most likely be for takeout since the prices are so great. Can definitely see myself coming back though!

Still the most affordable sushi HH in Houston. It gets pretty busy even on weekdays- came around 6:15 pm and had to wait about 40 minutes for a table (barely made it for HH!) Apps come quickly but sushi takes longer to come out. My favorite apps were the fries (so crispy!) and the agedashi tofu (also nice crispiness and the sauce is a great pairing). The sushi rolls that are available on the menu are also good! Just note that they're smaller (6 pieces). Rolls off the regular menu are also 6 pieces but they're pretty thick pieces. Lots of options so you're bound to find something that fits your taste! Very casual laid back vibe. Parking can be a challenge at peak times.

Teriyaki salmon bento

I came to Oushii restaurant an hour before closing with my friends from my Toastmasters club. We wanted something quick and near the club. It was only 5 minutes from the meeting. I was glad they offer separate checks and no mandatory tips added. Because the tables can be easily arranged, everyone got to sit together. I was trying to figure out which dish to order, between Bento and Teriyaki menus. I ordered teriyaki salmon bento because it came with 6 pieces sushi. The volume of food worth of the price I paid. But not sure how the salmon steaks were soaked in light gravy. The broccoli had no flavor. I was able to finish without a doubt. The fish was tender and juicy. My friends were pointing something above my head as we were ordering. So, I pointed the camera with the selfie mode to see the menu. Ah, I'll order the specials next time

AMY Roll

My go to for a sushi fix! Best value and I love the rolls here too. The AMY roll is the best for hamachi lovers. Always make sure to get my salmon nigiri.

Special #2- 10 pieces of nigiri and 2 rolls

This place seems to be super popular. We arrived around 6:15PM on Saturday and there was a line out the door. There weren't any parking spots available so while hubby drove around I went in and got on the waiting list. I was told it would be a 30 - 45 minute wait and they'd call me. We were finally able to grab a parking spot and in about 30 minutes I received a call stating there were 2 spots at the bar. It was kind of overwhelming to decide what to get as the menu is almost too extensive. They fortunately had a chalkboard with 3 specials and we decided to get them so we could try a bit of everything. Special #2: 2 pieces of sake, tuna, escolar, peppercorn tuna, yellowtail nigiri, 1 Stella roll, 1 skydiver roll, and 2 miso soups $28.95. Also chose Special #3: 3 pieces of sake, tuna, and escolar sashimi, and 2 pieces of peppercorn tuna, yellowtail and toro sashimi and a miso soup $19.99. I thought the prices were crazy cheap but I'd soon find out why. The miso soups and the salad came out quickly. I was hoping for that hot, rich umami taste but instead the miso soup was lukewarm and had a very strange artificial taste. It was weird. Salad with the ginger dressing was fine but hard to mess that up. #2 special looked impressive and it was a ton of food but I was very disappointed at first bite. The nigiri had a very high rice to fish ratio and the fish didn't seem too fresh. Both rolls were very Americanized and way too rich for me. Sashimi was okay. I think people love this place because of the cheap prices. They also seem to do a lot of takeout. One thing I noticed while sitting at the bar was that all 6 sushi chefs were non- Asian which is definitely a first for me and I was the only other Asian person dining there. Service was fine and the customers seemed to be enjoying their food. Really wanted to like this place but the food was very meh at best, and tasted more like AYCE sushi. If you are not looking for good quality but value, this restaurant is it.

Did happy hour get moved to Sundays as well?

What time does happy hour start?

3:00 pm to 6:00 order one get one free on selected items

Do you take reservations? If so, how far in advance?

Hi! I've been at oishii for almost 5 years and try to help everyone to my best ability. Any reservations Can made made at anytime for any day. There's less hope in you obtaining your wanted time if request the day of. You could place the reservation…

Do y'all know if/when Oishii will be closed this December?

Yes we close every year approximately half way through December for about 3 weeks

Do they take Apple Pay?

Yes

Do they do delivery?

No we do not

Phones are never picked up. Will you guys ever pick up phones? Someone said phones are working for this location so why is it that we get a repetitive tone that results in the end of the call w no help?…

They are really busy with dine in and especially take out orders. If it's a busy tone, that usually means they're on the phone with another customer. I usually try every few minutes and they pick up.

Do your phones work? Tried called several times on different days and always get dial tones.

Phone works, online menu / ordering does not

Are happy hours still fine in only?

Yes - they have always been and are still dine-in only.

Are there tables for large groups, like 10 people?

They'll push two tables and two booths together. Definitely would have to make a reservation. But yes I think they'll be able to work with you.

Do they do to go orders?

Yes, they do. You can make a call to order and pick it up there too.

Upon arrival, I was told that I could not sit at the sushi bar and eat. If I wanted to order I had to go sit in the common area of this dining hall. After this discussion, I said fine and asked for a menu. They then told me I had to get up and order at the register and view the menu glued to the counter. They took the order of a couple who sat down maybe 2 minutes before me in front of me. I will never come back to this place. They seem to be the last man standing in this dining hall, and with this kind of customer service, they won't last much longer. GENERALIZED REVIEW:…read more Came here with a friend from theatre after a full run--he had this place recommended to him by another theatre friend, so we're just passing on the word. The plaza was a bit confusing to navigate, and I'm pretty sure if the place weren't full of Asian parents and their kids, it would've felt like the shadiest place ever because you have to enter from the back. Otherwise, the plaza had a lot of great-looking stores overall. My first go-to: I've loved drinking Kirin Light ever since I discovered it in Chicago. The flavor is literally so light, with a slight acidity that brightens up my meal. The sake here was frankly also delicious. I didn't order it, but my friend did, and they had it warmed. The flavor was soothing and subtle, almost like tea. It was exceptionally easy to drink, and the ocean-themed ceramicware was a beautiful touch. We ordered two rolls: the Shaggy Dog and the Truffalufagus (a fun tongue-twister). I personally chose the Truffalufagus (which is not fun to spell) because it seemed like the most unique dish on the menu, and I enjoyed it very much. What I liked most about it was that it was subtle yet impactful. I also loved the textures--from the internal crunch paired with the fresh jalapeño to the softness of the fish. I'm glad I gave this roll a shot, and I would be excited to try it again anytime. The Shaggy Dog was great, but it appealed less to my flavor profile. It was a little too rich and creamy for me. I recommended this place to my BF as a potential future date spot--I personally think he would like it... if he weren't the type to enjoy AYCE sushi so much. If they had more unique rolls, I would definitely come back just for those. I was tempted to order the Surf and Turf for this round, but I didn't want to seem like a glutton, hahaha.

Also had to highlight their house made soy sauce which was extremely umami, very unique and sets this place slightly apart from the many other sushi joints in its range Truffle crab chawanmushi was certainly a top highlight for me as well - rich truffle oil with the perfectly light steamed egg and sweet crab chunks, just an incredible dish and I could have easily eaten several of these The uni was also extremely fresh and buttery and was nice even for someone who doesn't usually like uni In the same class and range as places like Kata Robata and I would say it's a strong rival! Started off with Toro Amaebi Tartar which was interesting the taro chips mixed with everything…read moretasted light and creamy with everything mixed together. The Chawanmushi was decent but it was a little different than I expected. It had a little bit more liquid at the top of the egg custard. The flavor was fine nothing overpowered and it was soft and had that gelatin mush to it. The carbonara udon pasta was creamy and tasted exactly how I imagined it would which was smooth and creamy with a little crispiness from the pieces of bacon. Just make sure you mix the egg into the pasta to give it that rich creaminess. The only dish I would say that was underwhelming was the crispy rice. I guess my expectation would be a little less rice and a balance of the crispy rice around it. It reminded me more so of a thick fried outer crust. However, I did like the fish and meat they used on top of the crispy rice. They all had their own flavors. The Handroll tasting is probably the most interesting dish I ordered. It seemed to have a good portion of fish and they try to keep the seaweed nice and crispy by leaving the plastic film over the seaweed. The flavors of the Handrolls were subtle. They did make a nice presentation. The salmon flight was pretty good you definitely could tell from the different cuts and fattiness of the salmon. My favorite was the aburi cheese the scorched cream cheese gave the salmon a melted coating of cheese and made it silky and smooth. The nigiri platter was almost like a flight of nigiri. In the order I ate them they got progressively better. My favorite was the scallop and tuna. The only roll I tried was the royal chutoro. The portion was a good ratio of rice to fish and the tobiko gave it a slight crunch. as service and parking. The parking costs $10 and it's only Valet. If you decide to park on the curb somewhere you will get a parking ticket (I saw a guy placing tickets on cars). The atmosphere was upscale and you can tell they try to emulate Japan with the decor(zen inspired). Overall, the fish was tasted fresh and the vibes were there. However, I do think everything was a bit overpriced compared to competitors.

Anyone that loves sushi has tried Kata Robata once or have even come back to this place…read moreoccasionally. After learning that the same chef opened a second location I knew it was a place I wanted to try. Katami design is similar to their other location where natural wood is their theme which gives it that Japanese theme and style. They have a small bar when you enter and a sushi bar next to the bar area. And adjacent to the bars is the main dining area. Because of that, this entire area can get pretty loud. If you are trying to have a quiet dining experience or a romantic experience, I suggest your reserve a table in their sun room. Also know that when you get their, off street parking is free in that area but if you valet, you must enter from the parking lot from Eberhard street but the entrance to the restaurant is facing West Dallas street. You will see plenty of door while walking from the valet station but the entrance is the door facing West Dallas. Anyways, our server was Cindy. She was very cheerful and attentive. Of course, it was a full house on a Friday night but Cindy was always there when we needed anything. She was an amazing server and made our dining experience even more pleasant. For starters, we had the Hamachi Yuzu and the Hotate Crudo. I love yellowtail and the fact that the Hamachi was fresh made this a great dish for those that love yellowtail. And the crudo had the perfect amount of scallop mixed with cucumber vinaigrette made this a refreshing dish to enjoy. As we started to order our nigiri sushi pieces, Cindy saw that we were ordering all the "toro" and suggest we order the "toro maguro don" which has all the toros along with the akami and the takuan. Which was a great suggestion, allow us to enjoy all the toro for a cheaper price. We also had the kanpachi. And for a filler, I also had their Texas Hamachi roll which has fried shrimp, spicy tuna and yellowtail. To be honest, I do not think you can go wrong with anything you order. And to end the night, our dessert was the apple caramel bread pudding. I love bread pudding and who does like caramel flavor. So, if you like bread pudding, you will love this dessert.

The courses started off with some fun sashimi, bridged with a Laksa noodle soup, and then finished off with various pieces of nigiri and then dessert. Everything was super tasty, but my favorite was the first dish of bluefin tuna with jalapeno sauce (the sauce won me over). We went for the 6pm seating, and Chef Sky said he normally wraps that up by around 7pm to prep for the 8pm seating so if you want to really take your time I'd recommend trying to get the 8pm seating. However I didn't feel rushed at all for the 6pm. The only reason the review is not 5 stars is because I didn't feel very full at the end of the dinner, which I suspect may be because not all the courses were nigiri where you have rice to help fill you up.
