The crab fried rice is phenomenal. Unlike many places that skimp on the crab, this dish is loaded with real lump crab that you can actually see and taste in every bite. The flavor is amazing, the portion is generous, and the price is very reasonable for the quality and amount of crab you get. Another thing I love is the location. The food truck is inside a mall, so you can enjoy your meal in a comfortable air-conditioned space without having to deal with the Maui heat. Great food, great value, and a comfortable place to eat. This hidden gem deserves far more attention than it's getting. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend giving it a try.

My family and I visit their sister restaurant, Star Noodle, quite often, so I was expecting the same level of quality. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We visited today at 1:15 PM, and I have to say I left pretty disappointed. The shoyu chicken was dry, and the overall food quality just didn't match the price. For a family of five, our bill came out to $178, including soft drinks. That's a lot of money for a casual plate lunch experience. What was also disappointing was being told by our server that they do not offer a kamaʻāina discount. As a local, it's always nice when businesses recognize and support the community that supports them. I understand we live in a tourist destination, but the prices should still reflect the quality of the food and overall experience. Unfortunately, Aloha Mixed Plate felt more like an overpriced tourist spot than the local favorite I remembered. At these prices, I honestly wouldn't even recommend it to visitors. My recommendation? Save your money and head to Star Noodle instead. We go there often, and the quality and experience have been much more consistent. From their happy hour food menu (appetizers were half off except anything containing seafood), the Roasted Chicken Wings were a hit with my sons. The Poke Tacos which were beautifully presented were fresh and tasty. One order comes with 3 so we ordered an extra taco which turned out to be the right move as they are on the small side. And I wanted to point out since the Tacos contained seafood, it was not eligible for the discount. Pizzas were priced at $16 (except for the Bourgeois) so we opted for the Margherita and Kahlua Pork and Pineapple. The latter was our family favorite. The pork was tender and flavorful which contrasted nicely with the sweet pineapple. We did order the Fish and chips from their regular menu. Mahi mahi was the fish of the day and it was good, but nothing exceptional. The fish came out nice and hot but the temperature of the fries were not so was a little disappointed. We ended our meal with the Banana Cream Pie. We all agreed that it was hands down the best Banana cream pie that we have had. The bananas were so fresh and flavorful, so much umami. Again, both were 50% off -- a bargain, and the kalua pork & pineapple pizza was still excellent and the best dish. Similar to the prior trip, not many draft beers were available -- so I just had the IPA again. Table service was also fine, server was friendly and attentive. They will give you a five piece tasting for free, either a dark, milk, or sugar-free flight. But why would you come here and just take... When you can also give back to folks in Lahaina rebuilding? So we got two free flights, one milk and one dark. My sweetie added on a drink, a pastry, and some very tasty chocolate and salted caramel gelato. I went with a make your own alcohol pairing, which was so much fun and very reasonable. For about $17, I got a shot of coconut rum with two chocolate pairings and a shot of premium Martiniquan JM volcanic rhum Agricole with another two chocolate pairings. And then I still had my free five pieces. What an amazing taste adventure, for cheaper than the price of a cocktail at a hotel bar or even a locally owned foodie place? I don't want to mess up your tasting - so you pick your favorites! But I normally don't like rhum agricole - and the pairings were such an amazing flavor adventure. Honestly, this is my number one recommendation in West Maui. Give the folks some business and have an amazing time! Oh, and they have jazz on Sunday nights' but I'm sure it's more crowded than than popping in during the day on a weekday. Every item here at a Merienda Maui food truck was delicious. The only mistake we made was not…read moreeating here sooner, since we would have returned to try more of the menu. We selected two types of tacos, the Shrimp and the Thai Beef Tacos. The shrimp tacos are served with a cabbage slaw, a ginger sesame dressing (not a strong flavor), gochujang aioli (dominant flavor that worked well with the shrimp), and some pickled red onions on top. Somewhat simple but all flavors combine well, the shrimp stands out with the aioli, and it has a tropical sense to it. The Thai Beef Tacos use a Thai marinade on the beef (sourced from Maui, though I couldn't tell the difference from regular beef in these chunks in a taco). Beyond that it's a common taco with a tomato salad (pico de gallo), jalapeño, cilantro, and mint (rather than a common diced onion pairing). The marinade infused into each piece of beef and truly carried the dish. I would have eaten it without the garnishes, though they do help fill out the taco. I also thought this was the most basic item we ordered, and would want to try out other items before repeating this. Lastly the Phili-bistek Sando with fries was the true star of the show. It reads as a cheesesteak with bell peppers and onions, and Mayo/chimichurri sauce on top. Yet I think this meat was also marinated, since I can't conceive how much umami was oozing from this burger. It is hands down the best cheesesteak I have every had...and I've been to Philadelphia. I found other recipes online that use a soy marinade to prepare the beef (tapa beef seems to be the Filipino name), and this sounds like it tasted. There was a lot of beef pieces, we shared the burger along 3 people, and I think that the circular shape made it seem larger than if it had been on a longer hoagie bread. Onion jam rather then regular onions would keep the tastebuds working, the Japanese Mayo would introduce both tangy and sweet flavors, and the chimichurri would add parsley, cilantro, and garlic notes. The burger was messy, but worth it. And the fries were extra crispy, similar to In-N-Out double fried fries but thicker. These work perfectly with just ketchup. We considered the Umami fries, which have gochijang and Mayo and Furikake at the same time, and I think all that sauce would reduce the crispiness of the fries. I would still try it, but the fries are top notch and a quick dip in ketchup is all that is needed. The Okonomiyaki Brussel sprouts also sound like an amazing Asian take on the vegetable and something to try next time.
