First time coming to Ohana dish located in Fort street mall. I was hesitant to eat here because they only take cash. I came in here anyways because their food looks amazing. I came here around noon so it was a little busy because everyone was going on their lunch break. Luckily, I was able to score a table for two. Food ranges from $5-$9. Depends if you get a mini or a regular plate. They have chicken katsu, garlic chicken , curries, fries saimin as well as donburis. Sodas are $1. Food: I ordered their mini garlic chicken plate for $6.25 and my hubby ordered their regular chicken katsu curry plate for $9. Their garlic chicken was very flavorful and compliments well with white rice and salad. For each plate you can either get tossed greens or Mac salad. While walking down Fort Street the other day soaking in the sights,sounds and smells, I passed by Ohana Dish. The photos of their food by the entrance caught my eye. The food wasn't the usual plate lunch fare. Today I sampled the shoyu pork. It was tender and the sauce was a nice balance of savory and sweet. First off, the restaurant itself is spartan: a square dining area with a few tables and low counter where you order. There were a few patrons digging into their meals. I decided on the shoyu pork because this isn't a dish you find all the time. In Hawaii, common pork dishes include roast pork (Western and Chinese style), Char Siu, Korean style (with or without Jochujang sauce), and Kalua pig. Shoyu pork, doesn't seem as common. The pork slow cooked in a sauce of shoyu, mirin and maybe a little bit of ginger. It was incredibly tender. It didn't look that special but once I bit into it, I was hooked. I plan to visit this restaurant again and try something else. Fort Street is a tough place to open a restaurant because there is so much competition. This place seems to offer something different. read more

Yay!! one of my favorite places is back as Ohana Dish it was formally Ohana Lunch where all the dishes were under $7 well they are back of course a bigger place so prices are a bit higher but not expensive the food? well I have to say it was like it was before which i am so happy! the Menu has evolved a bit but is basically the same they added a few to the menu and lost the Liver, Liver? Yuck you say? well when they did have it the picture looked so good and I had tried everything on their former menu that was the only thing left so I had to try it (i had horrid thoughts of dry fried liver and having to smother it with ketchup as a kid due to the taste) so i was prepared for that torture but I was soo surprised I actually liked it the way they made it! so although they don't have it on the menu anymore oh well but they have some new items!! the food is tasty reasonably priced and now in a location on Fort Street Mall insuring that they have a lot of traffic. I was happy that they remembered me from eating at their old Pensacola St location and that the food was like i remembered that now I'm going to have to make the trek to Fort Street Mall to eat every once in a while. read more

Zoiks. There are not enough Saturdays in my life. All right, maybe it wasn't the healthiest decision to order mac salad to go with my nanban chicken because it's traditionally topped with tartar sauce. Had I known I'd get that much sauce I would've considered going tossed. But I always like to try mac salad whenever a new place pops up. Ohana Dish is a few doors up from Marukame Udon on Fort Street Mall. I like that they are open on Saturdays because most mom & pop eateries in the downtown business district only open for the busier weekday crowds. So it's best to go soon before they decide to stop Saturday lunch service as I've seen other places in the area discontinue weekend service. It saddens me that downtown Honolulu is dead to the world on weekends. If it's any consolation I noticed more foot traffic nowadays compared to before. Nanban Chicken ($9 tax included): Two generous portions of sliced chicken katsu placed on top of sweet sauce, which to me tasted like tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce.) Topped with healthy dollops of homemade tartar sauce which contained lots of finely minced onions, cornichon pickles and pulverized boiled eggs. The plate could've used more rice but I still had leftovers. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The crispy, breaded panko complements the tender soft bites of chickenny goodness. I have to rate it 3 out of 5 Stars because after awhile the sauce on the bottom made the chicken soggy and it was a little too much tartar sauce for my liking. It would've made a really good chicken katsu though. The mac salad is pretty standard. A little undercooked for my liking. It was light on the mayo which I appreciated and it had chopped carrots, finely diced and riced potatoes and a detection of Japanese mustard a.k.a. neri karashi. I want to go back and explore their other menu items like the garlic chicken and toriten. I did not see tempura on their menu so maybe it's a daily special? I like that they also open til the early evening hours on the weekdays so I can do take-out should I ever have any late afternoon appointments on the occasion that I do make my way to this part of town. Parking a plenty at munincipal lots, particularly Kukui Plaza on Saturdays (50¢ every 30 minutes on weekends.) It's just a short little stroll everybody could use in their life. Tip: Cash Only. And DO NOT confuse this place with Ohana Bento & Sushi that's further up the mall. It's two entirely different businesses. read more

Okay, I returned on Monday. The mini oyako donburi is broke da mouth delicious and good value. The cashier lady very graciously brought me a small cup of water since I did not order a drink with my $6 (no tax, cash only accepted) mini oyako donburi. I am going to order their fried saimin next. I was busy on my phone so the male cook delivered my mini fried saimin with garlic chicken to my table! Nice! The fried saimin is SO DELICIOUS with kamaboko (fish cake), onions, cabbage minced in the fried saimin plus the garlic chicken is awesomely delicious! This is my favorite eatery of all places in Honolulu now! read more

I love this place! It's my #1 choice to eat in downtown. Their shoyu pork is amazing and they give a lot! My sister and I are usually able to share a plate. The tempura is also good and they have a great (homemade?) sauce! They're open late so I'm able to grab some on my way home from work. +1 for convenience. +1 for service. +1 for quality. +1 for quantity. +1 for DELICIOUSNESS! I hope that they never close. I had their mini BBQ chicken curry for lunch which was good. I like that they offer mini plates. I also like that they offer tossed salad in place of mac salad. Having BBQ chicken instead of chicken katsu is different but is good since I like BBQ chicken. The only flaw might be that the rice seemed to have been cooked with too much water. Wow! First time trying this place. Was looking for something with rice. I got the mini katsu curry ($6.25 including tax). SO GOOD!! Don't let the humble surrounds fool you. The katsu was fresh, crispy, with a light crumb, juicy. I suspect the katsu was made to order. There was a solid scoop of rice, generous cup of curry (so delicious) and a scoop of mac salad. There was the choice of tossed salad, but hey. It's a point of pride for me to try the mac salad at as many places as possible. I am full, but now I kind of wish I had ordered the regular size ($9), just for the joy of biting into that crispy, juicy katsu, smothered in delicious beef curry-gravy. Go get um. read more

So far all the food I've gotten to eat from here is yummy. Bbq chicken with curry, love it. Their tempura is a light and crispy, as well as anything fried that comes out of this place, fried yet not greasy. Tried their ginger pork, light ginger taste to tender pork. The only thing open other than McDonald's ... And chicken Katsu curry is one of my favorite dishes. This is my second time visiting Ohana Dish and I could have swore I wrote a review before but oh well... This place is a small clean mom and pop owned business. The prices are reasonable at $8 bucks for a regular plate. It comes with Mac or Toss salad, I like to be able to choose. So that's a plus for me. I'll definitely be back for another Katsu Curry fix. read more

Had their Chicken Katsu Curry for lunch the other day and let me tell you, BOMB! I'm not a huge fan of chicken katsu really because the breading always is falling off and they're usually greasy. But not Ohana Dish. You That chicken was juicy and the breading was crunchy which I absolutely loved! Their curry has its own flavor too. This was my very first time to check out this little Japanese restaurant in the busy downtown area, by the HPU area. What really wanted me to try out and check out this place was the items and selection of food that they offer. Today was the day that I got to try the chicken kaarage plate and I am glad that i got to try something else besides eating at the same place each time and it will be a good idea to try something new and tasty. It reminds me of eating mochiko chicken with rice, but i am not too much of a salad person. However, it is worth the money and the extra. 50 for brown rice and the good stuff. I am glad that do not charge tax and it is a cash only restaurant so be prepared to bring cash with you because they do not take cards of any kind (e.g, debit and credit cards). I hope that eventually that this establishment will be ready to take debit and credit cards as another way of payment as well. I can't wait to go there again the next time I want something that satisfy my hunger and get the best meal out there. Tried this place this week and I got the chicken katsu curry regular size plate lunch for $9, pretty reasonable considering it's in downtown. The food establishment is very open and seems very clean. The workers are (very) Japanese and quite polite. The curry itself was delish! I got my plate lunch with mac salad; I've had better mac salad, but it wasn't bad or terrible, I just had better. Best Japanese style plate lunch plate, dollar-for-quantity-for-taste that I know of. For me, it's just the right amount to make me feel full. Used to be on Pensacola, and when they closed down, I was sad...(shiku shiku...haha)...but now I found them again by accident! Chicken Katsu curry reminds me of my Japanese ex-girlfriend's mom's home-made Japanese style curry...the kind that is slow cooked so the veggies break apart and make the curry thick... This is Japanese-style food. They have excellent katsu, chicken or pork, coated with panko, cooked perfectly, and non-oily.

My favorite is the Toriten chicken. Tempura battered chicken with ponzu dipping sauce. Get the regular size because it's soooooo Ono.

This place is wonderful! I came across their place because I was tired of dropping my money into L&L. So I figure, Ima try this place out. They are super friendly&nice. They NEVER miss. I always get Chicken Katsu Curry with mac salad. It is delish. The katsu is crunch, not burnt & the curry is exactly how it should be. My one minor problem is the portions are a TAD bit small. But they are cheap, the food is good & the small portion isnt enough to keep me away (: I rather support local & help a family out then some place like L&L who dont appreciate business but rather take my money. So disappointed. Was ono for garlic chicken but the line at Fort St Cafe was out the door...So, came here & tried their garlic chicken. Lesson learned.... It tasted nothing like garlic chicken. More like fried chicken with sweet sour ketchup sauce. It was freshly made but it tasted gross. I couldn't even finish it, just threw it away. Service was ok. Cash only.
