OH LA LA -- Cafe, Bakery, Kitchen has been open nearly a whole year and I never knew of its existence until a month ago when I passed by it in the car. With it finally on my radar, I made a visit with my husband this past Saturday evening, around 4:30 pm. I wanted to pick up some bread because my husband and I were planning on making chili for the whole family for dinner and wanted to pick up an assortment of bread (and of course I also made rice for traditional people like my mom because it isn't a proper meal without rice). I was greeted by a friendly employee at the register. An employee also smiled from behind the counter when I walked in. I ended up purchasing: Multigrain Batard, $8- This bread had sunflower seeds and oats baked in. The bread was softer than the other breads that I purchased, which my mom liked (she said the other breads were too hard for her to eat so she skipped on those). I wasn't the biggest fan of this bread but my husband liked it, along with my other family members. Baguette, $8- I loved the chew of this baguette and ended up being my favorite of the 3 breads we purchased. Sourdough, $14- Please note that you can purchase half for $8 but my husband suggested we purchase the full so that there was enough bread for everyone. I really liked this bread too and thought it was nice and chewy. -------------------------------- (Total= $30) My family members had asked me where I had purchased the bread because they all seemed to really like it and thought it went well with our homemade chili. I was tempted to purchase dessert and pastries that I saw in the glass case but decided against it since another family member had already promised that they would bring dessert. But I definitely see myself coming back here to try the pastries and other breads with my little girl dog, as there are a few tables and chairs outside (and of course there are plenty of chairs and tables inside too). Living in the SFV is advantageous on many culinary fronts. One of which is, that if you drive about half an hour east on the 210, you will come to Pasadena. Here you will find, Oh La La, a bakery, breakfast and lunch spot with a French theme. There are the usual fresh breads and pastries and other full meal items. The menu was tempting me to go all out, but I came here for coffee, because I had plans for lunch elsewhere, in Pasadena. I ordered my favorite, a medium Americano - as a rule, I do not like to dilute my poison :) They gave me a table number and the coffee arrived in a lovely blue cup and saucer (see my picture). Yes, no paper cups, no self serve, no calling out names. It was delivered to the table. The coffee was strong, robust and at the perfect temperature. My husband, baby and I went to discover some new pastries and we were not disappointed. I also really enjoyed paying and then being served.. I wish more restaurants and cafes worked that way. A really solid French Boulangerie in Pasadena with a great atmosphere! I kept hearing about this spot so I finally stopped by Friday morning and the place was pretty busy! I ordered a Jambon buerre sandwich that was fantastic. Great, great baguette, soft on the inside with that great crust on the out. Lean flavorful ham and loads of butter, just the way it is in France! Simple delicious and to the point. The Croissant wasn't bad but just okay, it was a bit too dense inside and the outside was mostly soft and not very crispy except for the center hood or fold. It wasn't greasy or overly buttery but still had a good croissant flavor. Sadly the Hojicha latte was just not good and the only disappointment. Sunday afternoon at 4pm. The bakery is wiped out. Plain croissants and sandwiches left. I thought about this spot last minute but didn't think there would only be plain croissants left an hour before closing. I was here so decided to try the only croissant available and a cafe latte. Croissant was buttery on the inside with a slight flaky crunch outside. No need for spread it was tasty as is. Latte was fine without any added flavored syrup and I was ok without sweetener too. At 4pm on a Sunday, the place was clean and not busy. Regulars probably know nothing would be left at this time? There were customers strolling in (most likely the same way I came in on a whim). The service is incredibly slow -- it seems like they never have enough staff at any given time. I've come here for both brunch and their jazz nights (which are PACKED and you will be waiting even if you have a reservation) and the service has been the same regardless of the number of diners. My friend and I decided to try this new bakery given its popularity. We went on a weekday and in the early since a lot of comments stated they tend to run out. It's located down Colorado St so there are plenty of street parking locations. The inside area is spacious so it's a good location to meet up with friends for an early breakfast and/or to just grab some coffee. I grabbed two of their regular butter croissants, the pain au chocolat, and one of their seasonal fruit pastry (when I went awhile back it was permissions). The croissants were not as buttery and flakey as other croissants that I've had. The pain au chocolat had a generous amount of chocolate filling (tasted like Nutella) but again was much denser than I had anticipated. The seasonal fruit tart, though, was the star and I wish I had gotten more! Overall, although it didn't quite live up to my expectations I would still come back to try out their other pastries. read more

I had the poached egg with salmon on brioche -- small portion with greens on the side, but no dressing. My son's steak with egg was made from flap meat and was average; the egg didn't seem very fresh, more like pre-packaged yolk. A positive note: I ordered a croissant for my 3-year-old daughter, and after about 10 minutes of waiting, realizing she was hungry, they brought it out heated and ready. We came here after a morning at the Huntington Library and glad we had the chance to try Oh La La. Great place with a cool vibe in an old but modern architecture dining room. The pastries and breads were delicious and the coffee drinks were a great afternoon treat as well as tasty. We had coffee and croissants but the dishes coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. Sandwiches with house baked bread will be had on our next visit as well as the eggs Benedict which both looked delizioso. Friendly smiling staff guided us thru the order process and samples available for tasting helped make the decision on what to try. I was struck by how singularly unhelpful the staff was to the customer ahead of me. The customer asked for a side order of an item and the staff said they don't do that. When the customer pointed to the written menu showing that it was indeed being sold, the staff relented. Then the customer asked to have her croissant warmed up, and the staff said "no", they don't warm them up. I was starting to get the soup nazi vibes. When it was my turn to order, I asked for four items. The same staff person bagged each individually. I asked if they could be put in a larger bag or box, and she handed me an unopened bag apparently expecting me to stuff them in the bag myself. She was probably having a bad day, but the fact it was reflecting on how she was serving customers ruined my experience. Despite this, I still paid a 15% tip because I didn't want to be vindictive. My pain au chocolat was not very good. It lacked flakiness and it was a bit too chewy, almost like a corner donut store pastry. My wife had a savory croissant which was a bit better, All in all, if you're looking for a comfortable place to read, study or meet a friend, this is a perfectly fine place. Disappointing Experience - Won't Be Returning My wife and I were really looking forward to a relaxing afternoon date, but unfortunately, this restaurant let us down on almost every front. We spent $65 for two dishes -- the wild mushroom tartine and the breakfast burrito -- along with a baguette, fries, and a coffee. Sadly, none of it lived up to even basic expectations. The wild mushroom tartine was especially disappointing. Instead of the creamy burrata that was advertised, it came slathered in a watery, unappetizing cottage cheese. The mushrooms tasted old and rubbery, and the bread underneath was completely soaked through -- making the entire dish inedible. When I asked about it, I was told they could remake it, but after that experience, I politely declined. The breakfast burrito had no flavor at all, and the baguette was so hard it felt like it had been sitting out for days. Ironically, the best part of the meal ended up being the cold, leftover fries -- and that's saying something. I understand if ingredients run out late in the day (we visited around 1 p.m.), but just be honest and let the customer know. Swapping out components without a heads-up -- especially with such a poor substitute -- is unacceptable. This place turned what should have been a nice date into a frustrating experience. Our visit started rough to say the least. Service made up for it. We arrived just before 12pm and the place was packed. By 2pm, it was cleared out. We were told they didn't have burgers and no hibiscus tea, although both items appear on the menu. I opted for fresh squeezed OJ and my friend asked for Jasmine tea. My OJ tasted terrible. It was tart and almost tasted like grapefruit and I hate grapefruit. I even added one pack of sugar and that still didn't help. We managed to flag down an employee, we were both unhappy with our drinks. She offered us the housemade lemonade and that was much better!
