Spinach Pie
Sarah B.

Ok, so my review is going to be very up and down. It's difficult because I'm a huge fan of Mediterranean food, but there are not many options for this in Eastie. During coronavirus quarantine this and Nour were the only Mediterranean places that delivered in the area (usually only 3 or 4 options). Item 1) falafel salad with Greek dressing: the house dressing was great. But one of my biggest pet peeves is getting a salad and having chunky vegetables. I hate the work of having to chop/cut them myself and feel as if this defeats the point of buying a salad when I can make it at home with the same effort. Also, the amount of veggies lacked. You can't tell from the pic, but it was mostly lettuce. The craziest thing of all was the olives had pits! Who puts pitted olives in salads?! Falafel wasn't exciting. Item 2) pita: this came with the salad. The pita was actually delicious. A nearly perfect combination fluffy, crispy, and buttery. I recommend getting a side order of this Item 3) spinach pie: so spanakopita it actually one of my favorite foods! I was a little unsure when I saw it how it'd be, but it is very delicious. I'd go back and just get this. Highly recommend if you have not had it before. Tastes very authentic Item 4) grape leaves: overall they were okay. Not the best grape leaves I've had and a bit oily, but if you're craving grape leaves these will do. I prefer the grape leaves at Nour, however overall I'd say this place is slightly better.

Gyro
Jasmin G.

I was really craving gyros. I found this place through yelp and most people raved about it, so I figured I'd give it a shot. +Pita was fluffy & soft -Gyro meat was so dry and overcooked I couldn't even finish the gyro. -Curly fries & onion rings did not taste good either I guess my search for good gyro continues.

The chicken breast sandwich is fantastic and at $7.99 is inexpensive. I highly recommend Odyssey to anyone!

Convenient location. Not long hours (closed usually by 9pm), not many great deals deals to be had either but good and honest food.

Vuolo's in Winthrop is a cozy little Italian gem that's absolutely worth finding. The standout for…read moreme was the cioppino--loaded with seafood and served over homemade linguini. It was rich, fresh, and packed with flavor. The lobster ravioli was another highlight--hearty, beautifully presented, and just as delicious. We also tried a chicken special (can't remember the name), but it ended up being a great surprise and definitely worth ordering. To finish, we had a warm chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla gelato, which was the perfect ending to the meal. Service was just as impressive as the food--our waiter was attentive, friendly, and really added to the overall experience.

For a little restaurant on a quiet street corner in Winthrop, you'd never expect the vibrant atmosphere just beyond the front door. Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in the Greater Boston Area, but owner Lisa, her family, and her staff have succeeded in making Vuolo's a destination restaurant. You better bring an appetite because their menu demands nothing less. I could fill up on just the crusty bread and roasted garlic oil alone. My top two appetizers are probably the tender meatballs and perfectly crispy mozzarella fritti. If you need some greens, the Caesar salad is perfect for sharing. As for entrees, it's usually a toss-up between the chicken parm and gnocchetti, unless it's October, when I only have eyes for the divine pumpkin ravioli. (That is a reminder to always review their monthly and Monday/Tuesday specials.) While all of their desserts are amazing, the crème brûlée and tiramisu are standouts. For those that imbibe, Vuolo's array of cocktails will truly blow your hair back. Beverage Director Joe is a wizard that knows how to satisfy any palate. Not only do they nail all the classics, but their inventive cocktail creations are not to be missed. Their creamy martinis (espresso, pistachio, and pumpkin in the fall) are the best I've had anywhere. I also really love Ol' Buddy Ol' Pal, their version of an old fashioned. In both taste and presentation, Vuolo's cocktails give any popular cocktail bar in the city a run for its money. The caliber of dining and food options in Winthrop has improved in recent years, and I would say that Vuolo's was the one to kickstart that movement. Needless to say, I feel just a tad spoiled having them so close to home. Nothing beats a satisfying meal in a cozy environment with some of the friendliest customer service around. Whether I'm planning a birthday outing or just want a casual weekday dinner, Vuolo's is always a top contender.

They did, but pulled some punches. I opted for an Italian Wedding soup, which hit right. The soup was well seasoned and the vegetables still had enough texture to signal to me they were fresh. While I had been hoping to enjoy the soup as a first course, the kitchen brought my Sicilian chicken panini at the same time. The chicken was well cooked (and not too pressed) but the flavor of the red pepper was a bit lost in the mayonnaise (which in hindsight was an odd choice of topping for this one). We also had pancakes and eggs -- because breakfast all day almost seems like a good idea. The pancakes were well cooked but was looking for a lot more crispiness from the bacon. Service was a bit spotty and our dishes did take awhile to appear. Fortunately, there were some nice ladies with a few too many martinis to keep us entertained.

It also happened to be a convenient coincidence that I moved within walking distance nearly two decades later and there's no excuse at this point to not make a visit. Let's just say expectations were high. We (party of two) put our names down at 6PM on a Friday night, and were told that there were two parties ahead of us and that they don't have a policy of handing out potential wait times. We took a lap around the block and ended up waiting until ~7:30PM to get seated at a nice table along the window. There were only a few tables, and it looked as though there were some larger parties in the room (a party of ~8 and another party of 15), and so that maybe contributed to the longer wait time. We ordered a 1/2 order of the scallops limoncello, followed by the chicken parm and the lobster ravioli. Everything tasted great, although I will say that it was maybe a touch on the saltier side. It wasn't off-putting and made it inedible, but might have been just a bit salty nonetheless. It was a bit cramped, but the energy was good and the wait staff were super friendly. When I was about to ask for the check, the waitress somehow convinced me to get the amaretto cake, which was honestly a great choice to end the meal with. Overall, the food was really great, and a bottle of Chianti for $30 for a sit-down meal in a restaurant is honestly a steal in this economy. Not sure if I would come back to dine-in given the long wait, but I would consider take out.
