The sashimi was cut the correct way--not too thin and not too thick, exactly how it should be. They also have a good happy hour, but that is not the only reason to come here. Obon specializes in sushi and ramen type dishes. I would say that the appetizers are quite expensive but Obon is part of Phoenix restaurant week that happens twice a year (https://arizonarestaurantweek.com/). Restaurant week allows you to get a 15%-17% discount on a 3 course meal. One of the biggest foibles of this place is the extremely slow service. I had to ask for water 5 times because of how inattentive the waiters are. Also, we were there for 1.5 hours because that's how long it took them to get all our food out so definitely don't go here if you have somewhere to be. The food itself is above average though. I got two rolls of mochi, kanto beef, and the crispy rice trio. I took home a little bit of the Kanto beef since all of this did a good job of getting me full. I called the restaurant to ask about allergies, and whoever I spoke to was not very helpful and seemed really inconvenienced that I was calling. The cocktails weren't our favorite especially for the price. Not horrible but not something I would order again. My boyfriend ate his sushi rolls before my street noodles came out, and our friend got his food after we were both finished. The street noodles were again not very good for the price. They tasted like pad thai, but I prefer the dishes from local spots more- they are cheaper and taste better in my opinion. Had a great dining experience at this new location in Cityscape. They will validate your ticket if you park in the Cityscape parking structure. The decor is very beautiful. I lived in Japan for 3 years and this brought me back to some of the ramen shops I frequented over there (at a larger scale, because ramen shops tend to be on the smaller side in Japan). Finally came in to try for the first time! We went (unknowingly) during a weekend marathon so it was a bit crowded despite having reservations. The staff were so accommodating and helpful to ensure we still had our space despite the unexpected rush. The space is beautiful with all the exposed wood and lanterns! Absolutely Outstanding!!! Obon is in a superior location, literally across the street from the Phoenix Suns Arena... making it an ideal pre-game or post-game/concert spot. We started with the spare rib bao bun, which I believe was a special, and it set the tone immediately. It was tender, full of flavor, and clearly well braised, finished with a gochujang sauce that gave it a nice kick. It was so good that I changed my entrée and ordered the Braised Short Rib Donburi. The donburi was a different profile, more savory and rich, but just as good. Both dishes were excellent in their own way, and it was a great decision. We added several sushi rolls and everything was great. No misses at all. My son, who is very particular, ordered the Obon Ramen and said it was really, really good. Spicy chicken, pork belly, several proteins. Clearly their signature dish. The service was great, and the manager, Po, stopped by our table and was welcoming, extremely knowledgeable and professional. The atmosphere was polished but comfortable, again and the location is ideal, for ambiance, downtown flow and overall vibe. For a Monday night the crowd and energy were impressive.
