The sashimi was cut the correct way--not too thin and not too thick, exactly how it should be. They also have a good happy hour, but that is not the only reason to come here. I can only speak to the sashimi and sushi, but the quality was excellent and they serve fresh wasabi game changer. So for sushi Downtown I would say this is one of the best. I would say that the appetizers are quite expensive but Obon is part of Phoenix restaurant week that happens twice a year (https://arizonarestaurantweek.com/). Restaurant week allows you to get a 15%-17% discount on a 3 course meal. One of the biggest foibles of this place is the extremely slow service. I had to ask for water 5 times because of how inattentive the waiters are. Also, we were there for 1.5 hours because that's how long it took them to get all our food out so definitely don't go here if you have somewhere to be. The food itself is above average though. I got two rolls of mochi, kanto beef, and the crispy rice trio. I took home a little bit of the Kanto beef since all of this did a good job of getting me full. The hanging lanterns were so pretty and made the restaurant feel warm! The staff was nice and even gifted me a free dessert and sparkler for my birthday! The matcha is mixed with earl grey so it was like drinking an earl grey milk tea with matcha undertone. The omurice was so good! The egg was nice and fluffy and the sauce over the eggs makes everything much more flavorful. I would definitely come back for this dish. The Obon French toast was delicious! The bread was fluffy and the berries is soaked in yuzu so it gives the dish a nice citrus kick with the creamy sauce over the toast. I lived in Japan for 3 years and this brought me back to some of the ramen shops I frequented over there (at a larger scale, because ramen shops tend to be on the smaller side in Japan). Service was excellent, from the front desk to the wait staff. The food was great. Finally came in to try for the first time! We went (unknowingly) during a weekend marathon so it was a bit crowded despite having reservations. The staff were so accommodating and helpful to ensure we still had our space despite the unexpected rush. The space is beautiful with all the exposed wood and lanterns! We were seated in some tables that were pretty close together, I could reach out next to me and touch the other patrons' food if I wanted to LOL so I would keep that in mind. The signature rolls were so yummy-- especially the Tataki Maki, the crunch of the shrimp tempura paired with the tuna aburi was an amazing texture experience and I will be ordering it again when I come back. I was really excited to try the food at OBON Sushi Bar & Ramen, but the experience was deeply disappointing. I placed an order for a few items at 11:38 AM, and by 12:30 PM, it still hadn't arrived. When I followed up, the staff simply blamed "staffing issues" with zero urgency or accountability. Poor staffing is an internal operational problem, not the customer's. If you cannot fulfill orders on time, you shouldn't keep your Uber Eats app turned on to accept them. Very disappointed in this place. First of all, way overpriced. Living in NYC I can get ramen for the same price or even less. Same with the cocktail prices. We ordered steamed edamame for the table and it was COVERED in salt and drenched in oil. I got the original ramen and when I took my first sip of the broth, I couldn't help but make a face. We started with the spare rib bao bun, which I believe was a special, and it set the tone immediately. It was tender, full of flavor, and clearly well braised, finished with a gochujang sauce that gave it a nice kick. It was so good that I changed my entrée and ordered the Braised Short Rib Donburi. The donburi was a different profile, more savory and rich, but just as good. Both dishes were excellent in their own way, and it was a great decision. We added several sushi rolls and everything was great. No misses at all. My son, who is very particular, ordered the Obon Ramen and said it was really, really good. Spicy chicken, pork belly, several proteins. Clearly their signature dish. The service was great, and the manager, Po, stopped by our table and was welcoming, extremely knowledgeable and professional. We also tried shishito peppers, miso soup, and spicy tuna crispy rice, all bursting with flavor. My favorite was the tuna tostada. For our main courses, we ordered sashimi and ramen. There's a variety of seating options (sushi bar, high tops, booths, tables, and a bar). They also validate parking if you ask. There was a great variety of offerings on the menu, everything was fresh and delicious. Sushi chef Po is a legend and puts a lot of passion into his work. Everything was outstanding. The place was pretty much empty, but they still said reservations are best.. when we sat down we both ordered drinks and looked over the menu and the waitress came over at least five times within 10 minutes to ask us if we were ready. I feel like she kind of had an attitude and wasn't very friendly. They did not let us know that it was happy hour, but we found out on our check from our drinks that it was. I'm not sure if they have happy hour food specials or not, but that would've been nice to know.
