Don't let the look of the restaurant or location fool you into thinking this is no better than grocery or gas station sushi! I'm visiting in town for work and was craving some sushi rolls. This was the only location close enough to walk from my hotel room (30 min walk) and it was worth it! I had the pleasure of being greeted by both Chris (server) and Miguel (chef/owner) when I walked in. I sat up at the bar and experienced friendly and fast customer service. It was slow when I dined in but Miguel kept me company the entire time as he prepped my order up. Chris helped recommended their specialty rolls that I had my eye on and they hit the spot. Both the Dragonball Roll and his personal favorite, Sad Boy Roll. I added the Agedashi Tofu as an appetizer and an Asahi large beer. I ate everything and left with no left overs. This is the perfect example of a hidden gem in the rough! Xami is in a small building off Broadway in a bit of an out of the way area. Its not fancy and the parking lot is small but don't pass it up! When you enter there's a small area with sushi bar seating and then there's a side room with more tables. Service is really friendly and attentive. The sushi is reasonably priced and very fresh. I got the pick 2 for $11 lunch special with a spicy tuna and an avocado roll. What a deal! I also got a miso soup and some kizami wasabi -- surprised they had this! I enjoyed watching sushi chef Miguel stay on top of orders and it turns out he's also the owner. Very cool. I love supporting local businesses like this and look forward to trying more rolls - they looked to have pretty extensive options. What a great surprise. We found this restaurant, Xami Sushi, in what used to be a rougher part of town and now it's an outstanding sushi spot. When you first pull up, you might think, "maybe I should keep driving," but don't doubt yourself. Go inside. The place is clean, bright, and welcoming. The owner actually took our order and was happy to chat and also offered to customize anything we wanted. He really cares about the food and how it's presented, and it shows. I think they've been open here for about two years, and they're doing things right. We were there for lunch and I had three basic rolls (tuna, salmon, and Philly), and my wife went for the more adventurous rolls. Everything came out fast, fresh, and with generous portions of fish. From the outside, the location is a little sketchy. I actually had my husband go in first to take a look before I decided to join him. But once you step inside, you completely forget about the exterior. It's a small, intimate space with a sushi bar and a separate dining area with a few tables. It feels cozy and focused. I usually avoid specialty rolls at most sushi spots because imitation crab tends to upset my stomach, but I had no issues here, which says a lot about their ingredients. At one point I mentioned that I do not like artificial wasabi, and our server brought out fresh wasabi without me even asking. That small detail made a big impression. Service overall was excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, and very intuitive. We did not have to flag her down for anything. She also did a great job recommending sauces for my husband, who is not typically a big sushi fan, and he ended up loving the meal. We ordered the Sad Boy Roll, which was a standout. The flavors were balanced and memorable. We also tried the Xami Roll, spicy tuna, and a selection of nigiri, all of which were very well done. The gyoza were average and probably skippable. Don't judge a book by its cover! Pleasantly surprised all around. From the outside looks of this place you'd never guess that inside was killing it on sushi. The owner/chef said he has been here for a little over a year. The service which was just him was great and friendly as he chatted us up. Pricing was great and the quality was high. (Spoiler alert) Miguel the owner chef of this hole in the wall vibe establishment is getting some of the freshest fish in the city. The fish is flown in and goes to the fish market right around the corner from his restaurant; where he personally goes to pick out the fish. (Many restaurants have it delivered to them). Xami Sushi is a wonderful addition to the south Phoenix dining scene. I picked up lunch and was pleased with everything, from the friendly service to the excellent food. Both the exterior and the interior are simple and unassuming; the interior has a small number of seats at the sushi bar plus a good number of tables in the adjoining room. The sushi chef and the server were very welcoming when I came to pick up my order. I ordered the Baja Roll, the Tootsie Roll and the spicy garlic edamame. The Tootsie Roll is a pretty common roll that you can find at most sushi restaurants, and it was well-executed here. The Baja Roll was beautifully crafted and delicious--the yellowtail was fresh and the roll had a delicate but impressive flavor. But even though I loved the sushi, my favorite part of the meal was the edamame, which was perfectly garlicky and just spicy enough to provide heat without being punishing. I wouldn't have thought I could ever be this excited about edamame, but I was. All in all, ordering from Xami Sushi was a great experience and I will definitely do so again. read more

Totally Blown Away!!! Wasn't sure if it was the South Phoenix dive location that lowered my expectations, but this spot totally blew me away. The sushi was excellent, and Miguel--the chef--was an amazing host. I was heading back to the office and looking for a lunch stop when Xami came up in my search. Once I saw the location, I had to triple-check the reviews because they just didn't seem to match the location. That curiosity is what made me give it a shot--and I'm so glad I did. Definitely worth the trip, and I'll be going back for sure. I had the Sad Boy roll and the yellowtail sashimi--both were fresh and flavorful. They combine a bunch of my favorite sushi ingredients and caramelize and seal the flavors by setting it on fire right in front of you. They sell burgers too, in case there is somebody in a group who doesn't want good sushi. The ambience is pretty chill. I stopped in because my friend (LA) and I (Denver) were staying in the airport Hilton nearby before early flights home the next day. We both agreed that it was the best sushi either of us had in (at least) in years if not all our years. It topped sushi in both LA and Denver...what more do you need?
