Just visited for the first time for my birthday dinner and our long awaited reservation for OBC kitchen was a complete letdown. Our server was new, I can be understanding to a point but when your acknowledging every table around us, putting in their orders first and delivering their food before even taking our order, you start to lose patience. Manager on duty Wednesday July 16 was also attending to every table but ours. We sat, and sat and sat waiting to order, then to get drinks, and waited some more for our bill while tables around us sat, ate, and left. Terrible service. Went for their breakfast/brunch this past Saturday. The good thing is that they were taking reservations so we got a table reserved for 2, outside in the patio. We were the first ones to show up at 10am... and the only ones for quite some time, which frankly I was very comfortable with. The service was good under the circumstances. For food, my friend ordered bacon in a glass and a crab and asparagus omelette and she liked them both. The omelette came with a side of potatoes. I ordered a Belgian waffle with a side of fresh fruits. The fruit salad was great.. the waffle wasn't bad but the cream on top was too sweet! Can't believe it took me so long to try this place. I had brunch here today and it was such a nice experience. The space is beautiful. The decor and feel of the place is awesome. The service from our waitress was awesome. I love waffles, so if it's breakfast/brunch time, that's probably what I'm going for. OBC's waffles did not disappoint. They were served with 2 slices of the most delicious bacon and a side of breakfast potatoes. The waffles was topped with freshly made whipped cream, raspberries & blackberries. The presentation was lovely. The waffle was crispy on the outside and light & fluffy inside. This was a 5 star meal for me without a doubt. I really liked that I was able to make a reservation on Open Table. I needed to add one more person about an hour in advance so I called the restaurant and they updated the reservation with no hassle. A great dining experience all around. Wow! Me and my fiancé came for brunch and we did not expect how great of an experience we had! We both got the $10 smoked Bloody Mary and let me tell you it was phenomenal! Service was phenomenal and the bartenders were very attentive and efficient. The bourbon selection is impeccable. We ordered the fried green tomatoes with the herb goat cheese and bacon jam and that blew me away how great it was!! Excellent dining experience! We came to town for a three day weekend and immediately tried to come here on Fri night - and couldn't get a seat. The place was packed. There was no sense in trying on Sat so decided to come again on Sunday. We still couldn't get a table, but the bar was pretty open so we were in. The vibe is chill, but yet upscale without the pretentiousness. The menu is presented on a tablet. Yep, no printed menu's. In fact, the tablet sits with you the entire evening. No rushing you here. The place would seem to be revered for bourbon connoisseurs...yet they still had a great craft beer selection (which is important to this guy). Our biggest challenge was deciding on a selection for both an appetizer and entree. There was so many great options we had trouble deciding. Started out with Crab Dip ($12) and it was both flavorful and a generous portion. My bride ordered the Cod ($24) and it was well prepared with unique side ingredients and delivered a distinct and enjoyable taste. I went with the highly recommended Halibut ($34) served on top of a crab cake which made it excellent. The bar staff (Jonathan) and manager (Apollo) made it an exceptionally personal experience. My friend and I had brunch at OBC Kitchen today, and, while it was a pretty good meal, it definitely wasn't one the better meals we had over our weekend in Lexington. The good? The service was great. Our waitress was lovely and very helpful. My friend loved her filet mignon benedict - she thought the meat was well cooked and liked the dish overall. She also liked her side of cheddar grits. We stuck to coffee and enjoyed the coffee service. The not so great? I didn't think my brunch dish - the smoked salmon plate - made sense at all. The toast was too buttered and ended less toast than soggy butter bread. The apple celery salad was a good idea but not well executed. The celery was cut in very large chucks, when thin slicing would have worked much better. The whipped cream cheese was served as a smear on the plate, rather than in a container from which you could have scooped the cheese. It was difficult to get enough cream cheese off the plate. And the ratio didn't seem right. I barely had enough whipped cream cheese to spread on two of pieces of soggy toast. I left the last two triangles of toast on the plate and ate the remaining salmon (the best and most successful part of the dish) on by fork without toast. The dish had a lot of good ideas, but ultimately was not a dish I'd eat or order again. Overall, the meal was fine, but not very memorable. An a-okay brunch. read more

Wow! Everything was so good--I'm surprised I haven't heard more people talk about this place. We went around 2:30 on Sunday after catching a mid-morning movie and loved it. My bf's Bloody Mary was great--the bacon was so good! I had a bellini, which was tasty too. He ordered chicken and waffle and I ordered a (custom) crab cake burger with fries. They should totally add a crab cake burger to the menu because it was AMAZING. We ordered the banana pudding cheesecake to go--and it took 20 minutes or so. We went to a class in Lexington Kentucky and chose OBC Kitchen as the place for dinner. I am so happy that I did. Our reservation was for 6 and we arrive there about 5:45 on a busy Saturday night and they seated us immediately. We actually ended up sitting right next to the hostess station in a little alcove. Some of my pictures that I am going to add will have a red tint to them because they had a heater above the door that was red. I was really looking forward to coming here so I had read the menu up about a dozen times and the fact that they have all these Bourbons on their menu really added to at all. Martha was our waitress but the service here was so good we ended up seeing four different people at our table waiting on us! Martha came to the table and we were not ready but she asked if we wanted dinner rolls and we said yes. She brought the rules to the table along with butter. She took our drink order and I ordered the Noe, Noe, Noe which was a take on an Old Fashion. My friend ordered the Honest A.B.E. I tried her drink and both drinks were good although it did take me about half a drink to warm up to the smokey cinnamon flavor of mine. We placed our order for appetizers and ordered The Bacon in a Glass and Tuff 'n Surf. My friend did not like the peanut butter sauce that came on the side with the bacon but I surely did. We also shared the other and although I am not a big oyster fan these fried oysters were good. Instead of ordering a main dish we decided to order just sides. She ordered smoked mac 'n cheese and I ordered the Buttermilk Jalapeno Skillet Cornbread and the Matchstick Frites along with Roasted Glazed Brussel Sprouts. Our sides came out and I ordered a 1 oz pour of Angel's Envy bourbon. The sprouts were served in a cast iron skillet and were so well prepared I ate them and did not leave a crumb. They also served the cornbread in a cast iron skillet but it was too spicy for me so I took it home to the hubby and he loved it. The Matchstick frites were good, thin and crispy and the grilled tomato ketchup that came on the side was good I usually don't like homemade ketchup but this one I ate. My friend said she really liked her mac 'n cheese. As if I weren't stuffed already there was no way that I could walk out of there and not order the warm buttermilk donuts. They came to the table piping hot and they were served with a chocolate ganache, a raspberry melba, and a salted caramel sauce. I would order these again and again. We did take some of our food home and they took it away from the table and packaged it up for us and brought it back in a bag with a handle. All of this was done with a smile and a thank you ma'am. Visiting Lexington for the first time, we decided to give OBC Kitchen a try after reading the great reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is located in a strip mall - usually a turnoff for me - but the interior designers did a great job of creating a country tavern feel, right down to the rough-hewn barn board covering the walls. We sat in the little cubbyhole immediately to the right of the entrance - a great choice for an intimate date night but not so much for people-watching. If you're a bourbon-lover, or bourbon-curious, you'll love this place. Our server gave us an electronic menu listing dozens and dozens of bourbons. When I had questions, she sent over what I guess you would call a bourbon sommelier. He taught me some of the essentials about the characteristics of bourbon in a completely accessible and non-snobby way. Unbelievably, just as I was about to order my second bourbon, he had already anticipated the brand I was about to order and sent a little taste to our table. I half-wondered if there was a hidden mic at our table, or if I had somehow fallen to the power of suggestion. Oh, about the food. I really enjoyed the arugula salad with satisfying house-made cheese grit croutons. It was perfect for a light meal, especially since we also ordered the rich sweet potato bruleé as a side (although it's really close to being a dessert). Saw this place on a TV show and decided to give it a try. We ordered off the appetizer menu since that is what I saw on the show. There were three of us sitting at the bar and our drinks were very good. We ordered the pork belly tacos and they were beyond fantastic. Then we ordered the meatball appetizer and it was incredible. We finished with the short rib tacos and all I can day is I can't wait to travel through the area again so I can get another order. Next time I order apps and off the main menu. We started with the bbq shrimp appetizer that was good and the thick slices of ciabatta cheese bread that came with were so good. Everyone enjoyed their meal. But. My steak and cake was just OK since the filet was overcooked and tough, not juicy. The crab cake was excellent. Service was so disjointed and lacking. They came with a bottle of water for the table but after filling all the glasses it was empty and not replaced. One person had to keep asking for water since that was the drink of choice. No one ever stopped by and we had to flag our waiter down a couple of times. The food was brought out by runners. Also, once we finished our appetizer our plates were left on the table along with the empty appetizer plate so the table was just overcrowded with plates at that point. read more

Went in on a slow day, and on a day trip. The fried oysters were some of the best I've had in the middle of the country! A few orders of these could have passed for dinner, but since that experience was so outstanding, we were eager to try the dinner option.. ended up with a very tasty Gnocchi that I would definitely try again. Let me start out by saying I'm currently thankful I don't live in the area (yet)... my bank account couldn't take it. Next, I need to speak extremely highly of Akeem (hope I'm spelling it right) - he is by far the most friendly, knowledgeable and attentive bartender we've ever had the pleasure of being taken care of by. Really, this man is fantastic! On point with his bartending skills, his cocktail, bourbon and food recommendations! Sit at the bar if you're able. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Next, the food. Everything we had here was really good - and during our 3 week visit to the area we ate here several times. The bacon in a glass is of course fantastic, and I really enjoyed the wings and the shrimp and grits. But rest assured everything we had there was delicious. qq we Now... on to the most important piece. Bourbon and cocktails. Their bourbon list is impressive to say the least, many rare and hard to find bottles plus many of their own single barrel picks (and some bottles are available for purchase) . The prices, even on things that normally carry oppressively stupid prices were not that bad and on the picks and normal pours very reasonable! My wife also tried several of their old fashions and once again Akeem knocked them out of the park. Many times an old-fashioned is wayyy to sweet but these had that perfect balance even considering some had multiple types of sweeteners. All and all, this place is absolutely fantastic and a must go to if you're visiting the area... and if you live there I'm sure you already go. read more

OBC (Old Bourbon County) Kitchen is an odd duck. It's located in a strip mall off of downtown Lexington. Said strip mall also carries other restaurants owned by the same restaurant group. It's as if the strip mall owner asked BHG how much property they wanted to rent and BHG replied, "yes." The menu is an interesting combination of Sushi, Southern, and American all wrapped into one. Also, they got tacos and seafood. Don't worry, the menu isn't a phone book but it does come on an iPad (to contain the ginormous drink list.) Regardless the food is great. The highlights were the more innovative appetizers including the Smoked Salmon "Potato Skins" and Bacon in a glass. The drinks were amazing too, besides drams of your favorite bourbon, OBC offers flights featuring their own private selection- something you can only experience on the Bourbon Trail. The grilled ribeye however was only just ok. I would have liked to see a bit more seasoning and flavor in an otherwise bland steak. The night we visited it was very busy but regardless the service needs some work. Our server was a bit more interested in talking to the hostess than taking our drink and food orders. OBC is a prime example of a place I'd give 3.5 stars. With an amazing drink selection and some hit starter dishes, it is worth a visit. But for me, there are some areas to improve on for a future visit. Pro Tip: As I mentioned, OBC is located in the Landsdowne Shoppes alongside the rest of Bluegrass Hospitality's storefronts. When you find OBC you actually have to enter through the Malone's entrance next to the storefront. read more

If you love bourbon and whiskey, you've come to the right place. Their servers are knowledgeable about all such things. Their wine and beer selections could be a bit heartier, but understand they probably don't have room! You must get the honey bacon to start - OMG so good. They serve them in a glass with the bacon standing up like straws. I could have had a whole meal of just that. For my entree, I ordered the Kale and couscous salad with salmon. It had a lovely dressing that wasn't too heavy and the salmon was grilled perfectly. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at OBC Kitchen on a recent cold Saturday evening while visiting Kentucky. Since I was dining alone I made a 7 pm reservation for 1 at the bar, I arrived a full hour early but they were able to sit me at the bar. Food: Lots of great apps and entrees to choose from but I ordered the Steak and Frites. A nice cut of perfectly cooked prime NY strip with fries on the side doesn't get much better. Finished off with their warm buttermilk biscuits served with three dipping sauces of which the raspberry was my favorite. The list of available whisky was very impressive and they also had a variety of well priced flights available. Service: Sitting at the bar was perfect for someone dining alone. I had a chance to chat with Iverson who ran the bar and made excellent whisky recommendation. Food came out quickly and service was top notch! Atmosphere: Great modern restaurant with a high energy vibe. Crowded, bustling, but not chaotic overly noisy. Loved my perch at the end of the bar as it let me observe all of the action going on around me without feeling rushed. Value: Well priced menu for both food and drink. The customer can choose their appropriate price point with many menu options that should suit any palate. If I was rating this place for their bourbon selection alone, it would be 5+ stars! The food was all mediocre and very expensive. The $25 wagyu burger should have been amazing, but was over cooked and not much flavor. The taco appetizers were very saucy and messy to eat. The stack salad was just average as it was a huge pile of blue cheese on top of the bottom stalk of a chunk of lettuce, so you need to use a knife to eat it. read more

This is a beautiful establishment that doesn't look like it belongs in a strip mall. Such a warm speakeasy style wood interior with distances tables and a laid back atmosphere. Not all of the cocktails were my kind of drink but I tried a few just in case ;) they have an insane selection of bourbon! The Call of Duty flight is the best choice on the menu. They do not have any beer on tap, so this is more of a cocktail and bourbon spot. It's worth a lunch to go for the Hamburger alone but let me tell you about the Bacon in a Glass... We started with the calamari. With the very light and crispy (almost tempura-like) breading, hot peppers, carrots and sauce, it was excellent. I had the Shrimp and Grits. It should've been called "Andouille/Bacon and Grits with Shrimp Garnish". There was a ridiculous amount of andouille and bacon as well as an almost as ridiculous amount of their Creole sauce smothering the whole dish. It wasn't that there weren't enough shrimp, it just had too much of everything else. With shrimp and grits, it would be nice to taste the shrimp and grits. Any andouille, bacon and/or sauce should enhance the main theme, not overtake it. The dish was way off balance. My wife had the Seared Halibut over "crispy potato hash crab cake". These were plated such to be swimming in sweet (way too sweet) corn bisque which nullified any crisp that the hash may have had. The halibut was cooked nicely, but that was the only redeeming quality. But again, the lack of balance ruined the dish. For the desert, we had the Warm Buttermilk Donuts. The exterior of the donuts was nice, but the center was doughy. The trio of sauces were good. They attempted to feign a down-to-Earth vibe with the wait staff dressed in blue jeans. I have to be honest, I was surprised to see this restaurant looked more like a bar than the romantic restaurant depicted in the Yelp photos. Regardless, our party of 8 had the best time! We were in KY this weekend for bourbon tastings and stopped in on Saturday night to celebrate a birthday. From start to finish, our server provided excellent service. Everything we ate was delicious starting with the bread all the way down to the donuts we had for dessert. I especially enjoyed my cocktail, Dr Pepper. The garnish on top is actually thinly sliced red peppers. I don't know now they are able to slice the peppers so thin, but it packs a punch of heat. If you like spicy cocktails do get the Dr Pepper. Both of my girlfriends also ordered it after taking a sip of mine. Other excellent items to note: everybody raves about the bacon in a glass with peanut sauce on the side. They also did an amazing job with the beef carpaccio. That was so good with the shaved cheese on top and fried oysters. Hubby had an old fashioned - excellent choice -- and for his entree he got the shrimp and grits. Shrimp was smoky/spicy and the grits were yummy. I couldn't stop eating his grits The only drawback was the party next door. The music was so loud that it sounded like it was inside OCB. It really didn't bother us that much. The food was great (love that little house salad and bread!) but what absolutely made our experience was the service. It was expedient without being rushed and all hands were on deck and working as a team on a very busy Saturday. Our server (I think his name was Trevor) was outstanding!! He had quite a few tables and handled everyone and everything smoothly. We ate at a top Chicago steak house a couple of weeks ago that couldn't hold a candle to the service we got at OBC.
