This Metropolitan Avenue location is actually more beautiful and spacious than the Forest Hills spot on Austin Street--but unfortunately, that was the only positive. I wish I had read the reviews beforehand. To start, the service is completely impersonal. Don't expect a smile or any real interaction beyond being shown to your table or having your order taken. Food: The food is bland overall. The bread served at the beginning is clearly microwaved to warm it. The lamb gyro isn't sliced from a rotating grill; it's reheated in a microwave. At first, my husband and I thought the staff was just warming up their own food, but we quickly realized the microwave went off after nearly every order. The chicken in the chicken soup was extremely overcooked--so much so that it tasted like chunks of tuna rather than chicken. The meat pie was also disappointing: soggy and not properly cooked. Save yourself the time and go to the Forest Hills location instead. At least there, you can actually see the food being freshly prepared rather than reheated. read more

I was brought here on a date a while back and it was actually a pretty good experience. Service is super courteous and kind, and the restaurant is decorated well and spacious with many tables to choose from. My date ordered the chicken kebab platter and I got the eskendar kabab which is my favorite Turkish dish ever. I did taste the chicken kebab on my date's plate, and I found it a little bit on the bland side. Eskander kebab was delicious and the serving was absolutely huge, which is great because this makes for amazing leftovers. It was swimming in clarified butter and a delicious tomato sauce, which is just how I remember it being when I had it in Turkey. I like that they cut up the bread and used it as a base because it's soaked up all the juicy goodness and butter and also makes it easy to heat up the dish the next day. I wish the lamb was a little bit more of a fatty cut than Gyro style shaved meat though. That is the only thing I would improve in this dish. Overall, we had a wonderful dinner here and I would definitely come back to try other things on their menu, especially the baklava. Don't get me wrong, they are polite and friendly, if they notice you. Came in and the two employees were having such a nice conversation minutes passed before they noticed me. But then, I order my simple gyro platter and in a third full restaurant, still waited almost 25 mins or more for dry, kinda stringy lamb doner. Pictures are of only two things worth my time. OBA has become one of our go tos whether it be for take-out or dine in, we are always left satisfied. The hot falafel and hummus appetizer is delicious. The falafel is crispy and flavorful and the hummus is smooth and silky. The Baba ghanoush is an excellent version without being overly smokey like other versions I've had before. The Lahmacun is wonderful. The gyro plate which comes with rice and salad make for a wonderful meal. Platters come in small or large depending on how hungry you are, but the small is by no means small. Even their wraps are delicious. I haven't had a bad dish. The lamb cuts are thin, moist, lightly seasoned and less greasy when compared with other places. I appreciate this healthy, lower-sodium approach. Single orders are packed with enough food to feed two people. The pita is good, with a buttery lightness, but both their tzatziki and red sauces are watered down. Fine. No silverware. No napkins. Server brought pide bread (very good) with three small dishes (olives in oil, hot sauce and very thin white sauce). We ordered Coban salad that was awful. Supermarket anemic tomatoes. No dressing covered with I don't know what spices. Lamb gyro platter was dry and cold and not served with any sauce. The white sauce was so thin we didn't want any for the main dishes. Hubby ordered chicken gyro on homemade bread. Dry and tasteless and more onions than chicken. Had to beg for silverware and water and Diet Coke (thanks for 2 cans with no glasses and no straws and no ice). Can't even eat this food. The jacik (think really weak, tasteless and slimy tzatziki) was unpalatable. They hostess tried to help but didn't understand that poor service and low quality food were not what we came for. Lamb gyro (Doner): A generous portion of tender lamb shards in a pita stuffed with a garden salad of spinach, arugula, romaine, red cabbage, red onions and tomato slices. Perfect with white or red sauce. I prefer lots of the white sauce which gives the sandwich a perfect balance of flavor. If you like it spicy, give the red one a try. I will definitely come back for another one of these sandwiches. $9.25. Everything was fresh and tasty. The lamb was so delicious! The menu has a variety of different dishes to choose from seafood, shish kebab, vegetarian hot and cold appetizers and Turkish favorites. Absolutely love this place - the quality hadn't changed even after years of being here. We usually do a few cold appetizers and the liver which is so YUM. We also order the family meat platter / this is so generously made. The tenderness of the meat, the juices that mix with the rice, and the perfection of the flavor is absolutely delicious. Last Sunday we stopped by this location after a movie because the location on Austin street is always crowded and parking is so difficult. Lucky for us the place was empty. The server was very friendly and took our order right away and food came quickly. Bread was delicious and nice and hot. The portions of the mixed grill are smaller than in the past but we didn't mind because it is consistently good food. Prices are consistent with similar restaurants in other neighborhoods. This recent visit was a much better experience than a precious one, and I'm glad we gave them another chance. The food taste pretty good but also pricey for what it is. The falafel was really flavorful but sticking the crispy falafels into the hummus was a mistake since we didn't finish all of it, it was soggy the next day (and couldn't be put back in the oven). The hummus was really good as well. The gyro combo platter looked anemic but tasted quite good. Again, a huge mistake packing all the meat on top of the fries which made the fries totally soggy but I really appreciated the roasted tomatoes that came with it. The lamb and chicken Adana was pretty good but lacked seasoning. I think all around the chef is a little light handed with the salt. However, the white sauce (a very thin Tzatziki) and the tahina sauce (very thin as well) did make it better but those needed a little salt too. The red sauce was weird, it tasted like a cross between a hot sauce and marinara, I didn't enjoy it. I do appreciate the well-cooked rice and fresh salad that came with the platter. I do feel the food is of better quality but for what they charge, they can definitely pack the falafels and fries separately and not have such watered down sauces. Super excited thats OBA opened on on Metro! We haven't had the chance to visit the Original on Austin but heard great things. Since Wafa's and Deasura closed, I've been missing a local wrap place and Poof! Along comes OBA with Gryos, YAASSSS. We ordered a Gyro Wrap (not Pita although that would prob be great as well), large Gyro platter and Calamari. The Calamari was a good portion appetizer and was decent, they really like paprika! The hubs loved it. The Gyro was delicious, totally hit the spot! It needed some white sauce inside though, the lil sauce on the side was NOT enough and for whatever reason, places that charge for sauce on the side rubs me the wrong way. I'll pay for a SIDE of sauce, like the HUGE (8, 16 or 32oz) Green sauce at Pio Pio, but the tiny lil ones, come on. Yes, I know Pio also charges for lil sides as well.
