I was far less than impressed when my family and I went to Mother's Day brunch here. My review is solely based on this special event experience and not their normal menu. My main complaint being the quality of the food for the price and the availability and preparedness of the restaurant to accommodate. Buffet was filled with 95% carbs- not good if you're trying to eat healthy. Granted a lot of this was known ahead of time since it was posted on the menu so I can't really hold that against them but I would have loved some different options- maybe a omelet station? $15 seemed very steep for my mini yogurt parfait and the scrambled eggs I ate. When we arrived at 10 (we had reservations) the buffet was very picked over. They didn't have any bacon or French toast out. The fruit tray was mostly just honeydew which is everyone's least favorite fruit. Juices were almost empty and we had to request a few times for them to bring out plates. Seemed very disorganized. Small gripe-the menu said they had drink specials- $18 pitchers of bloody Mary's or mimosas but when we ordered them the waitress said they weren't doing that today. Hmmm check the menu? Also, brunch ending at 10:30? Maybe I'm used to the twenty something brunches but can I get an extension until at least noon? . They started tearing down the breakfast buffet and setting up lunch around 10:45 so we were caught in that awkward transition time and felt like we had to rush out of there after having spent more money than I would at most other restaurants for a better meal. Can't say I will return based on my experience there. When we were leaving, a woman whom I presume to be the manager, asked us how we liked it. Granted the rest of my family seemed more pleased with the food than I did but we did voice our issues with not having food available for us when we arrived (along with many other parties) and she apologized. I NEVER write bad reviews on restaurants, but it is only just I write this one. I came to O'Mara's with my Mom, Dad, and Girlfriend for St. Patrick's Day and it was APPALLING the way we were treated. The staff is EXTREMELY RUDE and condescending, minus the younger servers. We paid $5 each to get inside, grabbed coffees at the bar, sat ourselves, ordered, and once the food arrived, literally 2 minutes after, a female assistant manager yelled outright at us saying "You can't sit here! You need to finish up your food and go back to the bar!" We told her that we weren't told we couldn't sit in the dining area, and she considered us liars. My parent's friend tried to reason with her, and everyone could hear the manager raising her voice yelling at the friend! The server came back to check on us, and my Dad told her to stop bothering us about eating our food quickly or we would not pay. The manager came to the table exactly saying "Do I need to call the Police because you won't pay." He ended up giving us a free round of drinks but that doesn't take back the level of disrespect we had at O'Mara's. The meal for 4 was about $100 with tip - what a shame. On top of that, my girlfriend and I got food poisoning from the Beef and Cabbage. Everyone felt like their food was microwaved. Go to another Irish restaurant/bar in Royal Oak - this isn't the only option! read more

I have to agree with a lot of folks here. O'Mara's for me is just, "meh." I actually have had some pretty good meals here. Sunday breakfast is pretty solid actually. It's just one of those places that you go to and doesn't seem to really excel in any one area. You know the place...food was OK but not memorable. Standard run of the mill bar offerings. Service was fine but didn't give you the warm and fuzzy. Environment is stale and in need of a refresh but still clean and serviceable. That's just O'Mara's at this point. It's an old Irish Bar / Restaurant that feels like it and is still reasonably well run. If I could do 3.5 stars here I probably would. My wife likes it more than I do. For my money, there are just better values and experiences all over the area but if you are looking for a decent meal without a long wait O'Mara's definitely can still check those boxes. read more

I was in town from Upstate NY visiting a friend, we decided to pop into O'Mara's Irish Pub for a Guinness & some comfort food. First things first, Brigid was our waitress. This woman not only loves her job, but she loves what she does. We absolutely felt welcome and at home. Her attention never wavered, yet she didn't hover, thank you so much for making our visit fun! Our visit started with amazing homemade rolls with an incredible crab spread. They offered butter, but why with that delicious spread. I decided on the Chili Con Carne to start, covered with shredded cheese and chopped onions, absolutely delicious. For my main course I opted for the fish & chips, a personal favorite of mine. What I really loved was that I got multiple chunks of fish, seriously big thick, chunks. A little lemon juice and tartar sauce, very tender and moist. Hadn't been to O'Mara's since before Covid; stopped in for dinner on a Friday night and was a little shocked at the changes. They seem to be in an awkward phase, trying to keep a but of the old vibe but adding new stuff that really doesn't fit the Irish-neighborhood-spot theme. The waitress was great (at least that hasn't changed!). But what's the deal with the preachy menu and the strange California-hippie-style juice things they're trying to pass off as drinks? A huge chart of the periodic table they put on the wall looks like someone stole it from the local high school science class; it's flanked by some sad plants that get no sunlight and just look pathetic under strings of LEDs. The carpeting in the dining area was removed, leaving just a worn, scarred concrete floor -- super unwelcoming. And the food has really suffered. Dry pot roast is NOT a winner. Nor is gloppy bread pudding, or Irish Coffee that seemed to be made not with cream but with 2% milk. I'm all for healthy food and real ingredients, but there's a way to do it that's welcoming and inviting, and this is not it. Right now OMara's is strange and off-putting. Berkley Staple for many years. I enjoy the music at this venue, they usually have some pretty great groups play there on the weekends. The restaurant seems very dated and tired. And so does most of the clientele. Wonderful folks, but not the happening "in" crowd here. To be fair, I enjoy some of the dinner offerings. But as good comfort-food level. Not anything creative, but meat and potatoes type meals. Service at the bar is hit or miss (they are expediting for the kitchen, waiting on the tables in the bar are, bar backing) and trying to wait on you at the bar. So many nice people here, but if you are looking for a trendy menu, or cutting edge drinks, not sure this is the place. read more

We finally got service - and a free round of drinks, which was nice - but should it have happened? Furthermore, a friend left behind an item. My wife called to ask about it and was spoken to very rudely. I would have called and complained, but I'd rather do it here. I noticed that their menu suggested that you leave a Yelp review when you get 4 and 5 star service. It's also for situations such as this, when you get 1 and 2 star service. I see other middling reviews for this place, and now I know why. I'll give them another chance in a few weeks and hope they do better. Again, a disappointing experience. This is the third time I have attempted to like this place a chance and once again... I start with i understand that being a vegetarian i don't expect to have 20 choices on a limited menu. I am so surprised in this day in age I have to settle for a really bad 14 dollar salad. I've been here a few times now and have always had a good experience. The service is great, quick, and waitstaff attentive. The food comes out quick and tastes pretty dang good (except for the pot pie - don't get that...). I usually sit at the bar, so I can't really comment on the wait time for tables - though they have plenttyyy of seating and I've never seen a line. Was not impressed. First of all, the place smelt like a hospital. Our waitress was very unfriendly. She asked if this was our first time here. We said yes. All she said was 'oh', and conveniently forgot to mention they had a complimentary dessert if we ordered a dinner plate. Waited 35 - 40 minutes for our food. The pork tenderloin I ordered was very salty and presentation was as poor as a soup kitchen. The steak my friend ordered was small and dry. I will not waste my $ here again. read more

I've been here for lunch and thought it was good. Well dinner tonight was bad enough we probably won't come back. Anniversary salad with chicken, gross and ugly. I was starving so I ate the salad. Perhaps if I had ordered the colcannon or other Irish fare they could have mustered the third star. My dining companions all seemed to enjoy their meals and they even comped my niece a free ice cream. So maybe 2.5 stars... But seriously, my salmon caesar salad was just not good. I was envisioning warm grilled salmon on top of the salad, but the fish was cold and slimy and looked a bit like it had been recovered from the day before's brunch buffet. I think I had two sad little croutons, a stray tomato (I presume from someone else's salad) and a sprinkling of powdered parmesan that looked to be from a shaker can. Gross. My soda was never refilled and the server brought our food out at all different times. (And not in the good bring the 2 year old something right away way, but in the make the grown-ups watch their food get cold because they are too polite to eat before I've been served) The place was wicked busy for a Monday morning, so apparently someone likes it. My visit at this place might be the most uncomfortable dining experience myself and my family have ever had. We arrived around 7:30 or so on a Saturday night. Prime dinner time (except the place was at least half empty). We waited alone in the "lobby" by the hostess stand for 6 or 7 minutes before anyone ever acknowledged us. By that time, about 10 more waiting customers crowded in around us until there was no room for anyone to move. Only then did an older (and larger) gentleman come up to us. He says, "Is 2 hours okay?" [We all look around at each other, "Excuse me?"] He repeats, "Is 2 hours okay??" real rude like we're dumb. [We look around at each other, and I say, "2 hour wait?!"] At this point everyone is like "Oh no, nope, we can't wait 2 hours..." and starts leaving (us included). And he says, "No! No, is 2 hours enough time for you to eat?" What?............................. We all start looking around confused (because who asks guests that?). We says sure, and he seats us about 5 minutes later. While the 4 of us (my husband and my in-laws) are sitting there, we watched as this same gentleman walked around the store barking at the rest of the staff, REGULARLY interrupting wait staff WHILE THEY WERE TAKING ORDERS (including interrupting us too)!!!!! I'm assuming he is either the owner or the manager, but regardless, he was the single most inconsiderate and RUDE man I've ever witnessed working at a restaurant. If he's the owner, he needs to take a less involved position, and if he's a manager, he needs to be fired immediately. Of the 4 meals my table ordered (we all ordered something different), every single one was sub par. I would rather eat at a fast food dive than ever eat here again. The food was terrible, that guy was rude, and we were uncomfortable sitting there watching the wait staff be borderline verbally abused. We all agreed immediately we will NEVER be back to this place. And I'd highly encourage the staff to find job elsewhere, as none of them deserve to be treated the way I witnessed them being treated. The food, and surely not the pay, is worth it. read more

We went out to dinner here when we first moved to the metro Detroit area. I regret that we also brought my parents here. We had spent the day out and about around town and we were starving for dinner. O'mara's seemed nice enough from the out side and there were a lot of cars in the parking lot. My husband I shared the shepherds pie- it was almost inedible! I left the restaurant still hungry. All the food was waaaaaaay too salty. The placed did reek of smoke. I need to add a star. For many years my ancient forbears tried to drag me along to O'Mara's on a Friday for dinner and the show, and I declined. But, as I found out last Friday, it is actually a hell of a time. The food is the food. Me, I still order what I always have (portobella + ravioli), which is ok. But the show was very entertaining - and I wasn't even drinking. Ron Coden and his trio sang a wide variety of folk songs, and did some shtick which cracked me up. Wow my experience with this restaurant is totally different than the other reviewers. Maybe they had the wrong impression going in. This is a tavern or pub; then add the food. The service has always been amazing. The dinner salads excellent. The chicken Marsala I'm told is very good. The fish fresh. But it has always been the staff and love Irish music that makes it a pleasant evening. Yes the interior needs a major overhaul. They must have run put of money after doing up the exterior so well. Overall a nice evening out. I'm not saying that it's gourmet. But it's a big step up from diner and more interesting than average. read more

Took my Diva Queen daughter and my son out to dinner here last week. Haven't been, honestly, in like, 20 years... It was a fave of my stepmom's. The restaurant is pretty nice and clean, albeit all the walls were closed off, because it wasn't busy and that made it seem awful small compared to how it appears outside. It was also darker than it should be, in my opinion. There were a few stragglers at the bar, and a few tables, pretty standard I guess for a Wednesday night. Interesting background music. We heard everything from Tom Petty to Bob Marley... :) The waitress, I never did get her name, was nice enough, but seemed kinda rushed to me... Not sure why. DQ got the corned beef, I got froglegs, and my son got a NY strip (his go-to usually). There is really nothing Irish about the place except the name and the few Irish dishes they serve. They also serve Continental, Italian, Mexican, seafood, chicken, steaks... etc... Ahh... another restaurant with an identity complex. We were given some tasty fresh pull apart bread with poppy seeds and butter... and CRAB butter. That's right, I said CRAB BUTTER. I could have eaten just this and been happy, I swear to you!!! We got soup and salad.. it was good, nothing special. My froglegs were cooked nicely, lightly fried, but they put this "garlic oil" on the side and OMG it was fucking disgusting!!!! Like totally burned garlic, I don't know WHO would eat this, but thankfully it was in a cup and not all over my tasty froglegs!! DQ's corned beef was tasty, and it came with some nice horseradish cream on the side... in a giant gravy boat... that was kinda weird, it was A LOT of sauce for a side. She didn't like it, but I thought it was tasty. But the plain boiled potatoes, cabbage and carrots were yet to be desired. She ate it, but was kinda like "meh" over all but the corned beef. My son's steak was nicely done, with one giant super salty mushroom on it... and he got rice pilaf as a side. He liked it all, cleaned his plate, except the mushroom which I made the mistake of eating and almost choking on. So, as a wrap, the food is decent in parts, the decor is kinda dated, but clean and pretty comfy, but the prices are a little higher than they should be, and the menu is just very confused. My husband and I, along with a friend, had dinner at O'Mara's early evening on 5/18/19. The food was delicious, and no complaints whatsoever about the cuisine, but the service...well, that's another story. We'd been seated at our table for about 20 minutes without any server approaching our table. My husband finally went off and inquired about the situation. Even then it was about 5 minutes later when a server took our drink orders (and graciously comped them due to the delay). Further service was just as slow...we ordered appetizers and they weren't served until 20-some minutes later. When we'd first arrived, we'd been advised that there was a wait for a table due to a funeral party. But while we waited for our appetizer, the funeral folks had long left and there were many empty tables surrounding us. Yet it was probably half an hour before we were served our entrees, with no one offering to refresh our drinks in the meantime. My friend had traveled from Lansing to meet us and had brought several shopping bags with her as gifts. Unfortunately, she discovered after she'd returned home that she'd apparently left one of her bags behind in error - one containing a onesie for her granddaughter. When I called O'Mara's this afternoon, the person who answered the phone was very brusque and told me "Someone else already called about it; all I have is a lost umbrella, I'm in the middle of a crazy time right now...." and completely dismissed me. I'm old enough to remember dining here when this restaurant was Chuck Joseph's, so perhaps I don't fit into their current customer demographic. I visited O'Mara's for the first time after having passed it everyday for nearly 4 years (as it is within walking distance from my house). If I feel a place has potential or is exceptional, I like to visit it 3 times, across the day and with different shifts. This first visit came on a Monday around 10:15am, for its "famed" Breakfast. Upon walking in, I was pleasantly surprised with the old pub feel. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but it was rather nice, for back in the day and I felt a bit under dressed. I was quickly greeted and seated and a gentleman brought water and filled my glass. Eventually, a server greeted me and I told her I was ready to order. She cleared my table of the extra settings and took my order - Greek Omelette, Rye toast and Turkey Sausage. About 15 minutes later, she brought fresh in-house jams and explained them. Another 15 minutes, and food finally arrived (turkey sausage coming separately). I opened my silverware and found it to be dirty. The server at the tables around me (who was extremely nice to her customers) noticed me waiting to eat and asked if I needed anything. I discreetly asked for a clean set of silverware and she apologized profusely and switched my silver. Then my server came and asked if I was ok. I told her I was fine. I ate my breakfast and the food was . The house made jam is not the prettiest, but it is tasty. Everything seems fresh, which is a huge bonus for me. As for ambiance, it's a nice, old-style restaurant. Feels like an old country-club or lodge to me, but a little more upscale (emphasis on 'a little'). Be aware, however, that you will inadvertently overhear EVERY conversation around you. One group on the other side of the room had a chatty ringleader. I was annoyed by her boisterous, uninteresting stories. She almost drowned out the politely-conversing women directly on either side of me... Almost. And finally, the bill. I expected to pay under $20 for my meal, and I did. The food is moderately priced, per person. There seems to be a good variety of dishes to choose from and my food all came out hot. I had water and had to ask for my refill. The same gentleman who filled my glass initially came around with a pitcher and filled my glass again. Then my server came with a pitcher of water. I can't say I'd be compelled to ever come back. I didn't have a good or a bad experience, per se. It was just ok. As for the breakfast being considered the best in Berkley, I don't think that is accurate. But then again, Berkley is pretty small and lacks diversity. There is plenty of diversity among Europeans, but otherwise, I found none of that here either. read more

It did seem that we waited a bit to order, but all in all, it was a nice dinner. It seems like they have special events scheduled, too. Doth mine eyes deceive? Be there an Irish pub in downtown Berkley? Until the rumoured renovation of Hiller's Grocery happens, the answer is a resounding no. O'Mara's is Irish, yes, and the theme is evident from the glowing sign on the corner of Coolidge and 12 Mile. They serve alcohol, yes. A pub? Not particularly. In fact, this counts as one of the finest dining establishments in the People's Republic. It may not offer while tablecloths, though the napkins are linen and the menu at a higher price point than any pub dares to charge outside Temple Bar. I don't know many pubs that serve up gourmet omelettes and steaks, rather than cheap burgers and delicious boxty (Irish pancakes, but savory). O'Mara's really has two menus to consider; their everyday menu with its sandwiches, a few choice soups and salads, and plenty of entrees with a gently Irish slant. Then there's the brunch menu, the granddaddy, offering a hearty plough man's breakfast, corned beef hash, eggs Benedict, and do I need to go on because your mouth should be conspicuously drooling. Whatever you get, request toast or an English muffin -- yes, even in an Irish restaurant, you aren't sinning against Eire doing so. Why? Jam. Homemade jam. Resplendent, sticky fingers and conspicuously bright mouth jam. It's the adult form of Saturday morning all over again when your parents made you toast and slathered it in the good stuff. Maybe the jellies your Irish grandmother made, or the special preserves that only came out if you'd been good. It's delicious. 1 star is earned for the jars of happiness that leave yucky old Smuckers in the dust. I particularly like it with the heavy Irish rye or soda bread. O'Mara's also serves tea from Kristie's, a local shop which thrives on a lot of loose leaf blends that are well worth sampling. Their proper tea menu contains greens, herbals, blacks, and fruity combinations as far away from the norm as you can get. Tuesdays see tea time, but for a girl with a job, I never get to attend these lovely times. Boo! I would give a lot for a weekend teatime or an evening tea. The food here is spendy, even at brunch. $12 for an egg dish seems excessive, though the portions are comfortably filling and the preparations beautiful. We always wince a bit seeing the price for orange juice and brunch, although you won't lack for savory food. Alex's next door covers more run of the mill breakfast options if that's more your speed. But you won't get that awesome freaking jam. Another special factor about this place is the live music, which admittedly I don't get to see often due to scheduling conflicts and my small child. However, Friday and Saturday frequently feature live acts beyond the usual Gaelic Storm knockoffs. They have jazz, rock, folk, and pop acts just to name a few, and it's always worth to see who is on the roster. Don't get too deep into your cups because the parking lot is a tragic nightmare, a pitted wasteland of potholes and uneven gaps that doesn't belong outside so nice a restaurant. The number of times I've had to skitter through no man's land in the rain and almost broken my neck is no fun at all, and I really wish they'd repave it all! read more

O'Mara's Comedy Night is one of the best nights of comedy I've ever seen. Talk about bringing the best of the local metro Detroit Comedy scene together in one night. I'm a huge fan of the potato soup. But that's really all I can say that I'm a real fan of. I've tried multiple items on the entree menu and I just can't say that I really love any one of the entrees to order again..I've just never been wowed. Ive visited this location multiple times and I feel like the menu is over priced for basic "American dining" with an " irish twist" aka a corn beef sandwich, some Irish beef and some Irish soups. Salmon was not impressive, the Tuscan sea food was underwhelming and almost tasted like saltwater, I couldn't taste anything else but seawater. O'Mara's food was good. Our service was great. The decor was dark and stuffy. Cloth napkins and glass water goblets add to the ambiance. The average patron age eating during lunch was 65. Was recently here for a baby shower and had a lovely experience! The space was clean and organized. The service was fantastic and very friendly. The food was great! Buffet style breakfast/brunch foods were delicious and fresh. Zero complaints about the event. read more

Matt and I went to O'Maras for breakfast on Saturday. The restaurant feels like a small banquet hall, not very cozy at all. I ordered the vegetarian omelete with light cheese and the marinara sauce on the side with multi grain toast and well done hashbrowns Matt ordered lightly scrambled eggs and toast, Matt had coffee, I had iced tea. Matt had to send his eggs back as they were overcooked and dry. The food was very good but should be at the prices they charge. It ended up costing $29.00 The service left much to be desired. Friendly but unattentive. The busboy refilled my water by grabbing the glass from the top with his entire hand and the waitress never came by to ask how the food was or if we needed anything until the end of the meal when she came to clear away plates. I'd be willing to go back and try again but Matt has no interest in that. read more

Ok... I don't know where to start with this one. So, I know it's a restaurant, but I'll start with the band. As we arrived we were greeted by the sound of Flowinicity, a band playing jazzy covers and a crowd pleased with their efforts. They were the saving grace of the night. You know how they say that on the Titanic the band played on, yeah that! The second thing to greet us was a pungent fishy odor. Our server, Tonya was very pleasant and attentive, however several people besides her felt the need to continually ask about ordering and we had been there for less than 5 minutes! We couldn't even look through the menu, because of the constant interruptions. We ordered two cocktails. One was a signature drink, the Ruby Rose (grapefruit vodka with lemonade and strawberries) and the other was a Titos vodka and cranberry. The Ruby Rose was ok, but my husband's drink was EXTREMELY watery. They served a single shot and juice in a large beverage glass with a bunch of glass. The waitress offered to take it back and have it fixed. Then began begging us to order again! We were really just there for the drinks and band, but we succumbed and I ordered the Chicken Mackinaw. It should have been absolutely yummy. It was a chicken breast covered with mozzarella cheese, mushrooms and bacon with a marsala sauce. Well, it wasn't. The chicken had a weird taste to it, not spoiled just weird. We packed up and asked for the bill. We later found out one reason why the drinks were watery (even the replacement). My husband observed it sitting on the bar waiting, for about 5 minutes to be served . We noticed that we had been charged for 3 drinks. We asked the server about it. She said she had asked the manager to make an adjustment, but she had refused, even though the full drink have been taken away. She went to speak to the manager again and we received a new bill. That was when we noticed that one drink had been removed but the drink that was served had been upcharged by almost $3. I asked to speak to the manager. After a five-minute discussion, which included some discussion about the chicken, she fixed the bill and requested that we come back again. Well that's never going to happen, especially when you tell me the chicken isn't seasoned in any way. It was supposed to get some flavor from the sauce. My suggestion is that you eat and drink elsewhere. Then come listen to the band and order a pop. read more

Soup was ice cold tonight and the chicken in the chicken Omara was tough and chewy, artichokes were hard to eat. Good service, absolutely terrible food. Also the older lady who sat us then used her fingers to pick up a pile of crumbs on the table. So gross and why wouldn't u seat us at any other table that wasn't covered in food?! read more

Went for breakfast for my first visit ever. Chose my own scramble with gluten-free toast, and it was good. Good portion size, GF bread wasn't stale like it often is at restaurants. Waitress CeeCee was also very good - helpful but didn't constantly bug me. Downgrade for the condition of the place: sagging water-damaged ceiling boards in the dining room; thick black plastic stapled/taped up in the corner near my table above the sliding partition doors (must have been to cover up something even worse looking); hangers and nails in the wall with nothing hanging on them; unfinished DIY repairs here and there. The word "clean" didn't really come to mind, either. There were cobwebs on the can lights gathering dust. And yeah, they bring you a little tray of three pots of homemade jam, but I couldn't bring myself to touch them. Waitress had to "trade out a lid" due to a large gooey thumbprint on one of the lids, which gave me a chance to look inside and see some kind of food gunk (bread crumbs maybe) stuck inside the jar. No thanks. I probably won't be back to eat. Maybe some night for drinks. Maybe not. read more
