I always enjoy visiting Dick O'Dow's in Downtown Birmingham as a quick relaxing stop. This week I was thrilled to try a beer called Peanuts and Cracker Jack that is a Caramel Porter that tasted like a meal in itself. I frequently see Mitch, the current owner, very involved in the day to day operations which means he's close to the action, aware, and he is kind. The Celtic Rueben is a good choice on a cold day if you're hungry. Also, the bar has two unique spaces to enjoy. Up front closer to Maple is more like an old school pub with some unique wood counters/bar and the back of the bar has more of a warehouse feel with a long bar with several options on tap and a great place to enjoy watching a game with friends. read more

It's a shame I can't leave a lower rating. I had an absolutely terrible experience here at Dick O' Dow's. The food was disgusting, none of the ingredients were fresh. My salad had canned corn and jalapeños on it, the avacado was old, and the dressing was watered down, no flavor. The french fries, chicken wings, and chicken tenders were frozen from a box and just thrown in a fryer. They didn't even taste like they bothered to let to food fry long enough. The slider my son had as gross, luckily he's 5 and doesn't know any better, however he still didn't want to eat it. When we addressed this the server, who was new, she was kind enough. But then the owner, Mitch I believe, came out and refused to make any accommodations for the disgusting food. He got loud and boisterous with us, spoke down to us, and was even so bold as to claim that they have never had any complaints the whole time he's owned the place. Needless to say I'll never take my family to this place again. YOU should stear clear as well. This business needs to fail as it's a blemish on the prestige that comes from owning a business in the beautiful city of Birmingham. Find somewhere else in the two minute walk it would take to go somewhere else. read more

I haven't had this poor of a dining experience in awhile. I politely asked the very salty bartender to put the basketball game on. You would have thought by her attitude that I asked her to build me a space shuttle. The owner happens to be a 24 carat a$$hole to boot. You can definitely do better in Birmingham. Or anywhere, really. Make a sandwich and eat it in the street and you'll have a better time than at this place. read more

Could not believe the way he acted and talked to others and us. Extremely condescending and rude. Just avoid this place and horrendous food which was stale, cold and worse than a gas station hot dog. Our waitress let us know it was last call, so we ordered one more round. Shortly after, one of the male bartenders came over and told us we had 8 minutes to finish our drinks and needed to leave. I asked if they closed at 11, and he responded, "That's not how it works." Then, a woman came over and asked if there was an issue. We asked if they wanted us to leave, and she said no we could finish our drinks. Very uncomfortable. Don't ask for last call and then be extremely rude to customers. Would not recommend. This bar is a train wreck, and not in a charming dive-bar kind of way. The owners are some of the most entitled, disrespectful people I've ever encountered. They treat their staff horrendously--no breaks, constant belittling, and a complete lack of basic decency. On top of that, their attitude toward customers is just as bad. They sit on their stoop, scanning the place like they're doing us a favor by letting us be here. The way they look at people is so condescending it's almost laughable, except it's not--it's just insulting. It's clear they don't care about their employees, their patrons, or running a decent business. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place entirely. There are plenty of bars where the staff is treated well, and you don't have to deal with the owners' bad vibes ruining your night. read more

My friend and I came here on a Saturday evening in this summer and it was basically the only place in the downtown Birmingham area that had space available and that probably should've been a red flag. We tried at least calling or walking to 10+ places around downtown beforehand too, so it wasn't for lack of trying. When we walked into Dick O' Dows it was nearly empty, and this was prime dinnertime as well on the weekend. There were maybe only 20% of the tables occupied, which was really surprising, given how jam packed every other place was. There wasn't anyone to seat us after we waited about 3 minutes at the front, so we went ahead and found an open booth and seated ourselves. We waited probably around 5 more minutes before a waiter came to our table and gave us menus. The service wasn't bad, just slow, which was extra surprising given how little people were in the restaurant to begin with. Our waitress was actually super friendly and my friend who is gluten free had a lot of questions for her that she was very knowledgeable on or would check with others to get the correct answers, so that was really appreciated. Other than that, everything else was unremarkable. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about certainly, and I left our meal feeling underwhelmed, but just happy that we got to find a place to sit down and catch up. I won't be recommending this spot to anyone anytime soon, but might try it again if I find myself in a similar predicament where I find myself in Birmingham without a reservation on a very busy night. read more

Stopped in mid afternoon on Saturday to have a drink and watch the Masters. Front room was closed. Back room was busy. Service was slow and disappeared for long time. Asked for a cocktail and after some discussion was told cannot make due to not having an ingredient. Lots of draft beer. One person in our group ordered a wine and could not finish it. read more

Not sure I understand the negative reviews on here. My family and I have been coming here for years and was there as recently as Thursday of this week. The owner Mitch has always greeted me with a smile when walking by. The staff are always friendly and attentive and the food is rock solid. The vibe always seems convivial and fun. Years ago, I used to go to this place all the time. I admit I haven't been there in quite a few years for one reason or another. Went back today at early afternoon. It's a nice place. But I was shocked at the beer prices. Nine dollars for a pint of standard brewery beer and this is at happy hour time. They never said there was a happy hour fair enough. But I never thought that anyone would charge nine dollars for a freaking pint. Part of the reason I can afford anything I want to buy is because I don't pay ridiculous prices. Six dollars on an afternoon mid week would be the most it would seem. And maybe eight dollars if you want to gouge people on a Saturday night. We met Mitch (owner) the week before my son and his to be bride booked Dick O' Dows for their wedding "welcome party" which was held the Friday evening before their May 25 wedding in Birmingham MI. Mitch was professional and booked us in the back room which was the perfect spot for 70 people hosted bar and a few appetizers. No surprises on the completely itemized bill. If I could give zero stars, I would. This bar is a disgrace--not because of the drinks or ambiance, but because of the shocking way the owners (Mitch and Sharon) treat their staff. Employees are overworked, disrespected, and denied basic human decency like breaks. It's clear the owners care more about squeezing every penny out of their staff than creating a welcoming environment for customers or fostering a healthy workplace. I will never frequent Dick O Dows in B'ham again!! And suggest you don't either!!! Went to watch game and drink beers with an out of town friend at 5pm on Friday. The place was not crowded and we sat in the back at one of 2 open six tops. The waitress said we had to move, since it was just 2 of us-which was fine. Then the Owner came over and was extremely rude!!! She offered to move us to an open table directly underneath the TV with our game. I explained we could not comfortably watch the game from directly below the TV and she then brought over a bouncer to intimidate us. BTW we are both seniors? Our waitress Dani was AMAZING, very kind and attentive. However, I'm not sure if the gentleman was a manager or owner but was EXTREMELY rude to us while we waited for the rest of our party. Place was pretty quiet for a weekend. Our server was nice and efficient. Drinks were good, food not so great. Very little meat in the Reuben. Burger was missing some ingredients listed in the menu description. OK but not great. I wish an Irish bar around here would have popular Irish dishes like a spice bag, sausage rolls, an all-day Irish breakfast or even an old- fashioned, bog standard Irish summer salad. If it's an Irish bar have some Irish food not the same menu as every other bar. I'd pay good money for an Irish Sunday roast in the winter. Been here after a long time. A great sopt to grab a quick drink. Location: heart of downtown Bghm. Excellent beer collection. Gracious staff. Delicious food and lots of options. Absolute fav is their fish and chips (battered in Guinness :) ) - if looking for a more romantic and european feel, recommend the patio in the back (called "the dow"). Overall: must try. Lots of cute people of both genders. I was privileged to listen to some nice local music inside, of the Indie kind, and it looked like Alex L was playing drums. We cuties based on feedback from Royal Oak Eats regarding their chicken chili. She loved the chili! Me, I had the Abi Salad, which is a must repeat. The atmosphere varies from the front to the back and both are inviting, in their own way. We met the owner as he was training a new bartender and both were upbeat and engaging. Mitch offered great recommendations for this beer aficionado, which for me is over the top. I enjoy speaking with someone passionate not only about their business but well-versed in what's on tap. After we arrived home, I texted my buddy to discuss future lunch plans, and of course to enjoy more of the taps. Looking forward to the next visit! read more

This is always a good hang out for some of my Birmingham friends. It's loud and Roccus, but very animated and entertaining. This used to be a regular spot I would go to, especially in the summertime. They have the patio set out on the street. This is just a fun Irish bar with average food. It's always about the beer most of the times were here. I always get the Reuben sandwich when I come here as there isn't much else on the menu that I would normally eat. My friends always get either the fish and chips, the bread and dip or the potato leek soup or just plain burgers. I think the draw of this place is that it's just a cool and chilled place to meet up with friends and have some drinks. read more

Downside 1: You will see several people you'd rather avoid until the next lifetime like everyone you were tweeted about with on 248 makeouts in 2014 that can still be found on your digital footprint. Bouncers: mostly cool, though I did see the a gentleman turn down a 24-year-old with a government-issued passport. Downside 2: they might add a dash of Miralax to the mixed drinks of rude customers (as they should) because someone is always blowing their back out in the ladies bathroom. Can't speak about the mens, but there are only 3 stalls in the women's, and when a baddie in fashion nova occupies 1/3 of the toilet for 30+ minutes, it holds up the whole line! The Good: Bar in front in really nice, as is the back room area. The not so good.: High beer prices, food is non-descript. 6 of us ate there and the food was just filler. This is the third time I have been here and every time the bathrooms were a mess. The bathroom are nice but the trash can were overflowing with paper towels and what not on the floors. Been here a few times with friends. I feel like it's the go to place besides the Morrie, but Dick O' Dows accommodates for large groups a little faster. The beers are decently priced for the Bham area, but still on the higher end of what I'd want to pay for in Michigan. The atmosphere is loud in the back area, yet slightly more relaxed in the front. I personally prefer the front - if you can't dance at a bar, then I'd rather be able to hear my friends when we talk. The front and back rooms are both trendy - the patio area is also lovely and faces a cute alleyway with vines. I will say the bathrooms are in rough shape whenever I go - messy floors, sink tops and overflowing trash. Also, the service can be slow every now and then. read more

Dick O'Dow's is a great place for meeting up with friends. You are always bound to have that six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing with someone in this pub. Maybe that's just Birmingham for you. The food's not great though. Fish and chips are dry, and with the boneless chicken wings you get 12 pieces the size of a quarter for $9.95. Decent food and drink but our waitress seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. Group of 6 and it was noted by most of us. Not enough to complain but not warm and welcoming. Your experience might vary. Another waitress that brought the checks seemed much friendly for the short time we saw her. The back area was noisy and hard to talk even though it wasn't full. I prefer other places in the area.
