What's not to like about Duggans? Came here after 20 years maybe? It was picked by some local friends from my church to meet. The ambiance is very fun and cool, 50's to 60's themed with lots of neon, gas pump signs, old cigarette machines. Service was top notch, with the manager or owner checking on us as well as the server. Food was solid bar food, good and no surprises. We split some apps, and the beef bites were a pleasant surprise. I'd pass on the nachos next time, but the pizza was good too. If you haven't been, give them a try. There's a reason why they've been around so long. read more

First of all, Duggans is consistently dirty. I was at the lower bar one evening and watched one of their busboys take the kitchen floor mop and clean the inside of the back-bar beer cooler using the floor mop. Second, the food is always below average. Even for fried bar food, Duggans underwhelms. Third, the waitresses and bartenders always act like you are bothering them by merely existing. The one tall brunette bartender upstairs who is more attractive and friendly than the rest of them is amazing - but the rest of them are abrasive and bad at their jobs. The owner is clueless and cares only about the bottom line. He has run other bars into the ground and will probably do the same here. I've been a customer here since 1988, before they had the renovated second story. I always come back to enjoy the Big Chief double-decker hamburger deluxe. The special sauce makes the burger quite fantastic. The wait staff, cooks, and bar tenders have always been friendly over several years. There are a variety of places to sit and each have a slightly different vibe. Although, I prefer sitting upstairs and feeling the breeze when they have the windows open on a beautiful Michigan day. We'd stand in an incredibly long line, and the owner, "Suzie", would be working the line to get in. I used to come here when I was younger or when the Woodward Dream cruise would roll by. You can sit up on the top level and watch all of the classic cars go by on Woodward down below. Haven't been back in years. Random impulse decision of coming here as well. Also I hadn't had a drink pretty much all weekend and that sounded tempting. They have a much better craft beer selection on tap than I ever remember them having. I tried both a mimosa first and then a Milkshake Stout from Rochester Mills after. But they have a beer for everyone. Hard ciders and seltzers as well. The food was also way better than I remember. I think last time I was here probably in my twenties I ordered like a junior sized cheeseburger. Nothing to write home about but solid. This time I went with the Pocahontas. Yes, you read that right. It's basically a french dip. But thinly sliced shaved roast beef with provolone cheese, horseradish aioli, and the au jus to dip your delightful onion poppy seed rolls in. Damn was this amazing. I barely even touched my french fries (which were thin cut) because I wanted to finish this mammoth sized sandwich. They also have malt vinegar on every table which is a huge plus even though I was so distracted by the sandwich that I forgot to use it. This will always be my favorite Irish pub / tavern in the royal oak area. Great upstairs seating area where they can open the garage style windows. Lots of TVs and great pours for cheap! Decent food menu too. More for friends and family gatherings and celebrations. read more

It's really a shame as to what this place has become. It's a dump. I mean there is absolutely no pride in ownership anymore. The stairs going to the seconds floor, the carpet all over just looks gross, greasy and beat up. The whole place looks unclean and beat up. We sat in the second floor and when the breeze came through, you could smell the bar. Old nasty stale beer spill. If you've worked in a var before, you know what I am talking about. Had a beer with buds but then went to the Chalet instead. I didn't trust to eat anything there; sad to say. It wasn't always like this. I always, always, shop local and shop small business. My hope is that the manager or owner see this review and step up. You guys know how this place was. C'mon. I want you to not just survive but thrive. Our burgers and fries were served lukewarm at best and looked like they'd been sitting waiting for server/runner delivery to our table for more than just a few minutes. Upon asking our server to cash us out due to our unfortunate experience, she wanted to argue that our food was prepared in a timely manner; perhaps it was however it was still not all that warm or tasty. My husband and I each only took one bite out of our burgers. Paid the bill in full, didn't ask to have anything removed from the bill, even left a 20% tip as I pointed out to our server that the mediocre food was no fault of hers. I know, I tried a little bit of everything here. Your fish and chips are by far my favorite. You literally just battered and fried up three baby cods and put them on top of my fries. DELICIOUS. Cajun steak pasta? Just the perfect amount of butter and grease to satisfy a craving but not enough to upset the stomach. Salads are crunchy fresh and the dressing packs a lot of flavor. I had to hunt down for my server to make an order in which it was still incorrect (salad still had tomatoes for my non-tomato eating spouse) but... if you have the mindset to come here... you already know they are busy and you should order your three Guinness's when you sit down. I only went up top to the bar and the vibe is really cool. I love the decor and everyone was super chill. They had different sports on all the TVs so whatever you wanna watch, it'll be on! I will say it's a little inaccessible if you have mobility issues, like getting up the stairs and also I noticed there was no handicap stall in the women's bathroom. That might be different in the downstairs part though, I didn't get to go there. The staff was all pretty nice as well, I didn't interact too much besides ordering a couple drinks, but my group ended up being the last ones there and they let us finish our pool game without interruption which was sweet of them! :) I got a shirley temple and there was no cherry, but a solid amount of grenadine and really red. Stopped in for lunch because it was actually nice in Detroit today. I was told the Big Chief and the Ted's burger were definite must try's. I went with the Ted's and it was terrible. The burger itself was flavorless and barely warm. I'm guessing that it sat for 5-10 minutes before the waitress picked it up because the bottom bun was already soggy and gross by the time it made it to me. I'm guessing it would have been worse if it had the special sauce in it. I had them put the sauce on the side and I'm glad I did. It's just goopy tartar sauce that adds nothing to the burger. I suppose if you're feeling nostalgic or if you were drunk the food would have been worth it, but I wasn't either of those things. Heads up, if you don't have cash they will charge you an extra 3% because they can't afford the transaction fees. read more

My office got a carry out the Friday of St. Patrick's Day Weekend. I got Corned Beef & Cabbage and a cup of Creole Reuben Chowder, all of which was pretty dope. My meal came with garlic mashed potatoes with sauerkraut. I'd like to go in-person and see what the inside looks like and how the staff treats you. We ordered take out from them once more before the pandemic hit, and everything was pretty good again. I have been here multiple times, it's always a sports bar that we go back to. Food is surprisingly good. Burgers are amazing. They have plenty of beers on tap to chose from which is a plus. The summer time is amazing because they open the windows and you get a nice breeze. Service is meh at best. Every single time I've been here seems like there's only 1 MAYBE 2 serves working all the tables and it takes forever to order anything. I did ask for a side of the chief sauce to sample and I didn't like it. So glad I didn't have the little chief for that reason. I actually really like Duggan's. It's a classic pub but the upstairs, especially on a nice summer day, is so fun. They take off all the windows and you have a nice breeze with bar food and drinks. The upstairs and downstairs are decorated with a bunch of car and Michigan stuff. And they have pool tables upstairs. I just don't know if I'd considered it an Irish pub aside from some of the food options. Granted this isn't the best food ever but it is tasty! Plus the atmosphere is so fun and everyone was nice. We come over from Allen park once a month for this place specifically! We get the steak bites app, "big chief" burger, and a cup of French onion soup EVERY TIME. We crave the rustic, well seasoned & consistently delicious food. On top of that, there's always some great beers on tap and always friendly, attentive service. I love this place! I hope they never change their menu. Their French onion soup is the best I've EVER had (I order it at every restaurant to compare). The cheese blend is perfectly melty & plentiful, the bread is not trying to be any weird hipster interpretation of a crouton, the onions are caramelized, and the broth is flavored perfectly- not too salty just right. read more

I am surprised to come to a Irish pub and the extent of the Irish dishes is shepherd's pie and fish and chips. Really? I don't consider Mac and cheese and chicken pot pie an Irish specialty either. The place got full as we ate our lunch meal. And the group behind us were quite loud making it difficult for us to hear each other. We met some friends here for dinner as it is one of their favorite places. The inside has a warm fun atmosphere. But that is probably the most positive thing it had going for me. I ordered a margarita which came without salt and was very weak. My burger was dry and not especially tasty. The fries and coleslaw were good, however. Our service was ok, the waiter was efficient. I came here during the Woodward Cruise weekend and the view from the upstairs deck was awesome. I'm not sure if this was the best time to experience the place because it was insanely busy, but maybe it's always like I experienced. So the wait for a table was 45 minutes but we were able to grab a spot at the bar overlooking Woodward and it was perfect. The bar top was filthy and when I asked if they would clean it the bartender said "I can clean it again!" I mean it had crumbs and sauce on it from the previous person and I pushed the dirty plates off to the side!! So that was weird!! Then the bartender took our drink order and never asked if we wanted to order food. Well we did and we had to ask for a menu which was a 2 sided piece of paper. It took forever to catch the bartender to take our food order! I got the mini turkey burger and it came with fries and a special sauce. The person I was with got the mini regular burger and it came with fries. When they delivered the order they asked who had the turkey burger and then proceeded to give me the wrong one anyways. My wife and I just returned from Duggans and we were totally disappointed. I ordered the Big Chief burger at a cost of $18. It was undercooked. I should have sent it back. My wife ordered the Lake perch, it came with 3 pieces of overcooked fish and a PLATER of fries and a roll. For $23 totally overpriced. I am a twenty year plus customer of Duggans. The changes made over the years have not been customer friendly. I have witnessed firsthand the price increases (gouging) that has taken place during Dream Cruise and how customers are taken advantage of. Each year it has gotten worse. And now add on top of that the new policy of charging to your bill a 3% surcharge if you use a credit card or debit card!!!! I now understand why the "regulars" no longer come here. So sad to see this landmark take advantage of people. I will no longer be taken advantage of....so long Duggans! read more
