I needed to find a hardware store last minute, and when everything was closed and all the local drug stores didnt have anything I needed I was saved by this Nuthouse. I just happened to stumble on it, and it like it was in a time that stood still. I felt like Tim "The Toolman" Taylor. I had my caveman on! I bought what I needed but if I stood there longer, I would have come out with a bunch of unnecessary items. Cluttered and lil pricey but they are open 24 freaking hours a day!!!! Shoot my favorite circular right now it the Harbor Freight one I just got a couple of days ago so this type of really means a lot to me. Not the biggest selection but respectable for a hardware store in the middle of Manhattan and the price for the 24 hour availability is definitely seen in the item prices however it would be very worth the convenience when, let's say a water faucet busts at 3am due to a drunken friend slipping while vomiting in your sink. This place is awesome, 24/7 and they have an incredible amount of crap packed in there. They've saved me a number of times at 12am with random little things. Only bad parts are they're pretty expensive and depending on who's there they may be very helpful/not helpful at all, very knowledgable/completely clueless, able to speak english/completely unintelligible, so can be iffy on the service side. read more

They have everything and they are open 24/7. That said, they need to work on their customer service because you might get a staff member that is great or one that is awful. It's a crap shoot. Oh, the no-dog rule is actually because they are worried that the dogs may hurt themselves on a nail or something. It's really nice that they are so concerned. But they should tell people that, instead of letting it come across as some arbitrary and rude rule. Again, great selection, great hours, fair prices, but customer service can suck, depending on who you get. Apparently Home Depot doesn't cut wood at their Manhattan stores, and they referred me here, and I'm glad they did! The salesguy helping me was so nice, walking me through what I needed (which glue, length of nails, etc.) and cutting the wood I needed to my specifications. The 24/7 nature of the store is also a nice bonus since the few other lumber yards I yelped seemed to close early. read more

Been there a few times, massively overpriced. I called today to inquire about getting custom cut wood when I found out Home Depot couldn't do it, the guy on the phone took my measurements and said he 'couldn't convert metric,' then became condescending and irate when I asked him how long it would take, and then hung up on me in the middle of me asking about the cost, but not before making an extremely offensive remark under his breath. They have almost everything someone would need from a hardware store, a home goods store AND a kitchenware store (at least on the basics front). However - I don't really like the pushiness of the sales staff (as long as they "claim" you, they earn commission on everything you buy, even if they didn't help you with it - this ensures a healthy competition to grab customers first). They're helpful, but once they THINK you're done they try to rush you to the cash register, which isn't pleasant. read more

Went here for some 3/4" finish grade plywood for some shelving. Employees were terrifically helpful. Got me my request in about 25 minutes, cut and sanded edges very nicely. Price was a bit higher than I had hoped, but reasonable given that it was a higher quality of plywood, cut to spec and sanded off. Yea its kinda of expensive sometimes, but the ability to replace a smashed coffee pot at 4am is nearly invaluable to me-- as is the sheer variety of solutions to problems that the store offers, like how to clear my stubborn drain clog at 3am, or the ability to find a car jack there when no one else has one in Manhattan. I needed some hardwood squared up on a table saw. I called, spoke to Juan, and he said to bring it on in. I did, and he cut it right then and there. No waiting, No "oh, we only cut the wood that we sell". Now that's just good business. I'll definitely patronize Nuthouse again. Juan is great, and Nuthouse Hardware is great. I'm a fan with some reservations. Pluses : They have EVERYTHING you might need. They have EVERYTHING at ANY TIME you might need it or want it. That really should be enough. Its a hardware store. How great to be able to get something at 4 in the morning. The minuses - don't expect sale prices. You can find stuff elsewhere much cheaper but not at 4 in the morning. Helpful? Somewhat but it depends on how busy they are. You can encounter someone very interested or someone who couldn't give a crap or is having a bad day and just wants to get you out. But hey, they're a hardware store not therapists. Know what you want if possible and go late at night for more attention. read more

Great hours, well laid out, excellent selection -- BUT -- The manager woman is out of her mind. I have no clue why they keep this woman on there. She gave me the WORST experience I have had in a store in my life, no contest. Beyond rude -- appalling, and I do not exaggerate. Screaming abuse at me in the store because I said NY law required them to charge the marked price, not what was in their computer. ($10 versus $12, if you're curious.) Judging from some other reviews, other people have had similar experiences. I feel bad for the owners -- they put a lot of care into the place, in their window displays, etc. -- but you cannot subject people to an abusive madwoman if you want them to come back. I grew up in a retail store, and my father taught me to respect the customers. Too bad; it's very conveniently located for me, but I will never go back there. read more

The help here is rude. I went in needing a faucet adaptor knowing full well it would be diffucult to get the right one without the part with me, because it's hard to matching the pitch of the threading. I came prepared to buy 4 or 5 and then return the ones that didn't work if necessary. The minute I said I needed a faucet adapter, the guy just laughed at me. Good luck, Nuthouse. So this place sounds convenient - open 24 hours and the workers there were great, very nice. However, it was definitely not a quick run-inside-and-grab-something kinda place. I had to be escorted to the 4th floor (which can be a trek if the elevators are busy) for a simple screwdriver. Don't know why they wouldn't have them downstairs. Seems like a basic enough item. Okay, I may give this place one more try and if it's no good, I'm going to Home Depot. read more

I used to live right across the street and Home Depot wasnt too far.. but the guys in this store were so awesome and so helpful.. maybe they were nice to me cause they always saw me in there. We remodeled our kitchen and this place was available all night long! I bought, everything from cleaning supplies, to kitchen appliances, to tiles! Beats the rush of any home depot! read more

Imagine if the people from the most miserable post office you've ever encountered were running a hardware store. That's this place! Nut House is a perfect name for this store. As in you have to be insane to even consider walking in here. Every time I went there, I left thinking "what is wrong with these people?". My fourth and last trip there went like this: I enter store to buy gloves. I know where the gloves are so that cuts down the chance for one of their idiotic employees to send me to the wrong floor. I go directly to the glove section on the wall of the first floor. It is near on of their check out counters. I am standing there looking over the gloves, I pick a pair and hear a huge, dramatic sigh behind me. Then I hear a drumming, tapping sound. I turn around and some young black girls is in full pout, rolling her eyes and tapping her foot with her arms crossed, staring at me. Bonus! She works there! I suppose I was blocking her way to her register. But what her tiny brain couldn't help her understand is this: 1.I didn't put the gloves there. The store did. 2. She could have said "excuse me, sir. I need to get to the register." 3. That is NO WAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER. When I looked at her in disbelief, she shoved her way around me. She didn't say a word, but made that weird, ghetto Pshhhst! sound. That was it for me. Did not buy gloves, would NEVER return to that place. And, even if the service was in any way acceptable, the prices there are outrageous and there is absolutely NO organization in place. read more

GOUGERS! Hurricane Irene about to hit the city and need flash light batteries? Friends, neighbors,do not depend on our neighborhood hard ware store 'Nuthouse'. This Friday frantic New Yorkers are trying to buy basic needs for ourselves and families. I needed flash light batteries.After waiting on line and suffering mob warfare they would not sell them to me unless I bought a $45 flash light. No $45 flash light no batteries-of which they had cases of behind the register. We live one block away and have been going to the Nuthouse for the past two years, but no more. Customer service is consistently terrible and they have a (very STUPID) no refund policy on EVERYTHING. This place has HORRIFIC customer service. Incredibly rude workers who do not take the time of the day to help customers. I went in looking for a specific part, asked someone to help and they informed me that they would order it for me. Took my name/number down and would call. No call so I went back. I was given the wrong part but didn't realize. So I went back again. This time, I was told that it was my fault because I didn't remember the name of the guy who ordered it and I could only come in when the guy was working. When I inquired as to why he didn't call me, I was told "he forgot". But no rationale as to what happened if I "forgot" his name. read more

The service is poor in the hardware department and excellent upstairs in the House Ware department. Has the potential to be a great store........ how fitting that i write the first review, since i live two doors down! this is a 24 hr hardware store - yup, you read that right. all day, every day! caulk for your bathtub on christmas morning? a gallon of freshly mixed paint for your living room, at 3;15am? it's all here, all the time. there's a home-goods part on the 2nd floor, with stuff like nice-smelling candles, spatulas, shower curtains, etc. read more

DO NOT make a long trip there based on a phone call -- they will automatically say yes when you ask them if you have anything -- in my case, an item that doesn't even exist. I drove all the way from Brooklyn in the middle of the night because an employee told me they had a particular item, then when I arrived, the employee -- evidently the very same guy -- said, "no, we don't have it," and proceeded to ignore me. I had to go through four employees, finally blowing my top, until I found a nice guy who gave me a very helpful and informative explanation -- but unfortunately it was that I was looking for a nonexistent item and would have to call a professional to solve my problem. Would have been a lot better if the dope who picked up the phone just said "I don't know." read more

This place is only good for the sheer fact that they are open 24 hours. Customer service is absolutely abysmal. The pathetic low-lifes that work here couldn't be asked to get off their stools to help a customer out if they were literally dying in the aisle next to them. Also, NEVER get keys made here. I have gone 4 different times and each time the key does not work. I am convinced they make a good portion of their revenue from customers having keys made and not bothering to go back once they realize they don't fit the lock. If you need a 24-hour do-it-yourself spot this is it. Otherwise, look elsewhere. read more

This place is horrible! The staff are rude and don't speak English. I bought a blender here that was horrible .. They made me come to the store 3x before a manager would speak to me about it and in the end they wouldn't take it back. I have made copies of keys that don't work. I bought wall stickers that don't stick to the wall. I will seriously never come here again. read more

The downstairs hardware guys are generally pretty helpful as long as you are not there during a super busy time. But, upstairs in the home section, the woman that runs that department is absolutely so mean and rude. If I see here there, I turn around and go somewhere else. read more

My son in law went there November 4th during the catastrophic event of hurricane Sandy and thought he was doing the right thing and bought me a generator. Well needless to say he was ripped off! They charged him $799.99 for a generator that costs $439 in Lowes. They charged him $19.99 for a 2 1/2 gallon gas can! To all you people below that experienced the same experience of price gouging from this establishment, I urge you to file a complaint with the New york State Attorney General which I did. read more

The second floor house ware sales staff are horrible. There is an emaciated ugly old woman named Barbara who is obnoxious and I heard her verbalize a derogatory remark about a customer after the customer dropped something (did't break). Personally I find them suspicious instead of helpful, rude, and ignorant. Including the black guy who copied my keys. Wide variety of merchandise but it is the poor customer service that keeps me away. read more

Never, never, never buy anything you might have to return from Nuthouse Hardware. They will only accept unopened goods. If you open something and find it is defective, they will refer you to the manufacturer. Tough luck for the customer. read more
