This place was pretty good! Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect of a Japanese-Thai fusion place. I didn't know if they would be able to get the noodle dishes right on either side. However, the menu looked interesting enough to give it a try. I ordered the black garlic tonkotsu and my GF had some lettuce pork wraps and corn tempura. I think that everything was executed pretty well! If anything, the tonkotsu might have had a little bit too much black garlic to the point where some sips of the broth were a little bitter. However, it was a very nostalgic moment for me because it tasted very similar to the Yo-Kai ramen machines that we used to have in the Netflix offices years ago. I would eat a bowl of the black garlic tonkotsu there almost every morning for a quick and guilty breakfast, and the bowl here brought back a ton of memories of those times, so thank you! Oh Nute, you are onto something great. I've officially tried this place twice! And both times were excellent. First visit: Dined in around 8pm, no wait, but certainly during peak hours you'll have to wait. It's a small restaurant but it's very cozy. We ordered the Karaage, Khao Soi, and Tonkotsu ramen with spicy added. The Khao soi is probably one of the best I've had in the city. The karaage was very authentic, it took me back to my visits to Japan. Generous pieces of well-seasoned dark meat. For their dipping sauce it's either Kewpie or their own aioli because it is so rich and you can tell there's lots of good fat in there. My only complaint would be that the "spicy" is not spicy at all. I wish they had a stronger chili oil or paste on the side. I asked for a side of their spicy sauce and it was very mild. Everything else about the ramen was incredible. I had ordered the crispy pork, they didn't bring me the right kind, but when I asked, they gave me a free side of it to make up for the mix-up. The broth is extremely rich and decadent. Black garlic oil is really hit or miss with me, but in this case it was incredible. It didn't taste super artificial and it didn't overpower the rest. The ramen noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente. Second time: I ordered through doordash to see if the quality would be maintained. Happy to report it definitely is. Ordered the chicken pad kee mao (absolutely delicious and this has a good hint of spice!!). Also got the gyoza, this I'm sure is good fresh but doesn't travel well. Order while dining in. And then also tried the curry udon. Really incredible, and thoughtful packaging. You can tell they care about their customers and the quality of their food. I discovered Nute 's on a complete fluke, and when it's meant to be, it's meant to be. And this was definitely meant to be! Nute's is located in Bernal Heights/SF, and if you haven't been here, you need to put this at the top of your must try list. The Yuzu soda was delicious. I don't often see this being offered in restaurants so it was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the tonkatsu with extra meat. Whatever you do, get the extra meat! Everything about this was really tasty. The broth was flavorful, the pork was very tender and juicy, and the seasoning combined with the seasoning of the broth made for a perfect bite. I absolutely will order this again the next time I'm here. The mushroom fries were out of this world fantastic. I've never had mushroom fries before, so of course I needed to try them. I'm prefacing this by saying I don't know what they fry them in, and setting that aside if you're a vegetarian, you want these! If you are a carnivore, you want these! The next time I'm in, I will find out what they fry them in. They are meaty, tender, lightly seasoned and properly fried. They aren't greasy or even remotely oily. The mushrooms are meaty, and realistically, I could've made a meal out of them alone, and I would've been perfectly content. Good service and great food at this Bernal Heights hidden spot. Khao Soi Gai was good and had a lot of different flavors mixed in. Chicken wings were ok. The best dish was the pad thai with shrimp, had a great balance of sweet and savory flavors. Mushroom Fries $11 This was good with the sweet and sour sauce but the batter was either overdone or just not great because it was very hard and randomly shaped. Way too much batter to actual mushroom ratio. Tebasaki Chicken Wings $11 The crunch and chew was good but the chicken meat itself can be more flavorful and seasoned. The sauce on the skin was pretty good. Khao Soi Gai $18.50 i personally did not like the crunchy noodles on top, I think there was too much of it. The flavor of the curry is heavy and the oil separates a little if you take this to go. Pad Kee Mow It is good here, can get quite spicy quick. Such a cute and cozy Japanese & Thai fusion restaurant tucked away in Bernal. We shared the spring roll appetizer which was such a refreshing start to the meal with a fresh mint dipping sauce. My friend ordered a red curry dish, Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiaw, with pork and baby back ribs. She said it was delicious with a spicy kick to it! I ordered the vegetarian ramen which came with fried tofu, and I added a half soy marinated egg. I really enjoyed my ramen as well! I think it's my second time at this restaurant. First was years ago. Wasn't a memorable experience and I only realized that I've been here before after sitting down. My overall rating: 3/5. Friend's overall rating: 2/5 Pad Thai with chicken: 8/10 it was above average. Comes w tofu, some egg, chives, peanuts, lime, bean sprouts. Sauced up and tasty. Well balanced. Pad see ew with chicken: My friend rated her dish a 5/10 and said, "if it was free, I'd eat it. Like it's edible... but wouldn't pay for it. I expected better for the price. I felt like I needed to eat it with rice because it was too salty, too sweet, too unbalanced. I'd never come back again. The whole experience was bad." They were WAY too heavy-handed with the soybean paste and it ruined the dish. She also said that some noodles were hard and undercooked. Not enough wok-hei in my opinion. It's the worst pad see ew I've had. Service made the experience worse. Overheard the server tell another party that each person needs to order something, with $18 min pp but there's nothing written so I don't know how legitimate that was. He also charged us an extra $1 fee without disclosure and we were confused as to what it was for... that rubbed us the wrong way. Also, he didn't fill up our waters at all, not even in the beginning. Super knowledgeable staff and it was easy to sub in gluten free rice noodles, sub out the soy marinated egg and something else I forgot. They added bok Choy to replace those items and it was so so good. Cozy tiny spot. Can be a wait as they don't take reservations. You put your name on the list and then wait close by. Very small, very quaint but very authentic and absolutely delicious food! Everything is very authentic, and made fresh. Their noodle dishes are amazing, and feature dishes from Thailand and Japan. You cannot go wrong with anything you order except for underestimating spiciness... I eat a lot of spicy food, but here a '3' is plenty. The fried small plates are also wonderful. Parking can be terrible because of small one way streets all around. The decor is simple and not ostentatious at all. This place does take reservations, but it is worth the wait. Very mixed review here. On the one hand, the food we had was very good. However, the service we had was of fairly blunted affect and unwelcoming. Moreover, we sat down for dinner at 7:30pm, by which time they were already out of key staples: many sakes were not available (took five tries just to pick something that was actually in stock). And there were many menu items that were sold out as well: GUAY TIEW KUA POO, DRUNKEN NOODLES "PAD KEE MAO", and PAD SEE-EW. As someone with celiacs, that left me with only two options for dinner: either a curry or pad thai. That was a little annoying. Nevertheless, the flavors were good and the textures were nice. Vegetarian review alert ‼ Okay so Nute's was on my Yelp bookmarks for a while because it's super close to home and had good reviews. It has both Japanese and Thai food which is great. Here is everything my partner and I ate at Nute's Corn tempura with match salt and shoyu (3.5/5) : Matcha salt. Genius. I have a bias for matcha but whoever thought of putting it on a savory tempura. God bless. And the shoyu had something in it.. can't put my finger on it but to me it tastes like it had the kick of vinegar which was perfect with the tempura. Really wanted to try the squash blossom tempura but it was sold out so I'm guessing it's a specialty of theirs. Pad see ew (3.5/5) : My partner seemed to think it was the second best pad see ew he has ever had but umm. I love drunken noodle and I was a bit disappointed that they couldn't make a veggie version of pad kee mao so I was not in the mood to appreciate the pad see ew. Sorry. I did like the flavors.. very balanced and nice. The tofu chunks were a tad bit larger than I would have liked and had not soaked in the flavor of the sauce as much as I would have liked either. Vegetarian Ramen (4/5) : The broth was so understated and simple yet delicious. It had a tang and nice kick to it which made it stand out. Bamboo shoots were not from a can and were delicious. Came here around 1pm, after our morning errands. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated (without making a reservations). There was one person serving all 17 seats - place is casually elegant. Lights were on the dim side so you could say it leans on the intimate side but the seats are quite close together so you could hear your neighbors conversation if you were paying attention. Our server was friendly and as attentive as he could be, being he was the only one doing all of the front of the house duties. The space is small with limited seating. Pretty standard setup, not especially intimate. Service was solid. I got the chicken curry, my friend got the beef curry udon, and we shared the gyoza. All three were amazing. The flavors, noodles, vegetables, and protein were all great. I would order all of them again. Didn't care for the highball and I wish they had Thai tea or more drink options.
