Great pizza, closest to NY style that I've had in DC. Sauce is a bit on the sweet side; crust has a good chew. Recently they added sushi to the menu. Strange to many but common at kosher pizza restaurants looking to expand their appeal. Note that this place is kosher (adhering to Jewish dietary laws) so no meat can be served with the dairy. So all the "meat" is imitation meat (eg. Soy). Don't expect real meat so you won't be disappointed in the pepperoni and sausage as some reviewers seem to be. read more

Decent simple NY style pizza joint. Quibbles: cheese a bit too brown and crust a bit dried out. The crust may be because I got the last slice late in the lunch window. I suspect the cheese is a mix, not just moz. Sauce was overly sweet for my taste. I definitely plan to return for another round. Guy throwing pies was a real New Yorker. Note this is an orthodox operation -- shut from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. Round 2: full pie to order. Sorry, the sauce is just odd,,,like its made with tomato paste. Dough was seriously messed up... almost raw on the inside. It may have something to do with the roll-through oven, which probably doesn't get hot enough. Took a walk around the neighborhood today and found this gem. The pizza was excellent! True New York style! They had a lunch special with 2 slices, a whopping number of perfectly cut crisp fries, and a large soda for $7.99. This was plenty enough for two people to eat. Locally owned AND they deliver! The pizza crust has to be some of the best I have ever had. Anywhere. This is mostly a take-out type of place. It is really unassuming and you really wouldn't be able to guess that the pizza is so good here. It is strictly vegetarian (Kosher) with some faux meat options. NY style pizza w/o the hustle. The best pizza in Wheaton, MD. I wanna love this place more than I do, but they make it so hard. After 6 years I still go back, but it's a real trip every time. They tore the store hours sign off the window because they can't keep regular hours. I've shown up several times in the past during times they had posted to find the lights off & no-one in sight. When they are open I have never seen the counter display full of pizza. They sell by the slice & whole pies & will turn the oven on when you get there. Once, when they had more pizza on display than what I had ordered, they just gave me the rest for free. Don't expect them to move fast though if you're in a hurry. They added a sushi bar in the back (to help pay rent?). They allegedly sell knishes too, though last time I ordered one I was told that the truck hadn't made it from New York yet. It was about 5-6pm. They come up on Google if you search for "delivery," but when I called & asked the guy on the phone asked me to come pick it up. They make good NY style pies (if you're not in NY) & have vegetarian meats. Kosher. I haven't tried the gelato. read more

Nut House Pizza, what a fitting name. My husband and I are driving home from our pick up order and I have never in my life been so compelled to write a review before we eat. Here's what happened: we placed our order online. A simple order: regular fries, two iced teas, an extra large cheese pizza. We walk in and the gentlemen behind the counter is on the phone. He does not acknowledge us and I'm fine with that he's on arguing with the person attempting to preorder pizza for Saturday night. We walk around taking a look at the fish, art, and Jewish newspaper. He finally gets off the phone and mocks the people attempting to preorder for Saturday. I show him our Eat24 receipt and he rings us up for $4.00 higher than our receipt. I explain to him the coupon online is $3.00 off an extra large. He claims he's giving me a discount. I start eating the fries and trying to explain the disconnect and inaccuracy in price. He calls Ira and walks down the line. My husband already skeptical due to the 3 star reviews and tells me, "well we're never coming back here." The gentlemen comes back takes our bag of fries grabs a small styrofoam cup, I tell him, "my hands have already been in the bag. I started eating those, what are you doing?" He starts pouring the fries back in the pan and says nothing. If that isn't a health code violation I don't know what is. Long story short, I was over charged for my meal, unsanitary fries were placed back to resale, and I now know why it's called Nut House Pizza. This was nuts. It's really disheartening. I was so excited that I found the pizza place after not having it for over 15 years. My Hebrew school used to get it every Wednesday night for Tichon so this was a nostalgic meal for me. The fries we received after the cluster were mushy. The pizza sauces is sweet and delicious. But was undercooked, the cheese had taken that it's been sitting under a heat lamp for days taste. Being originally from New Jersey, I know from good pizza in the "NY style". This is pretty mediocre with a tough crust. A "medium pizza" is actually 4 individual slices from a pre-made whole pie put into a box. Not many of the reviews have mentioned that the meat toppings are all vegetarian imposters. My wife, who picked up the pizza, thought we should return because she really liked the owner. (I should add that's she's from Kansas and doesn't know what a proper pizza is supposed to taste like). Since I didn't meet him and can only judge on the product received, I vetoed that and will continue looking for our regular pizza joint in the area. read more

As someone who was raised in a kosher home in the Silver Spring area this place has been a mainstay in the Jewish community for ages. I remember going here as a kid and I still continue to go here as an adult. Perhaps nostalgia makes me a bit biased in my review, but I just love this pizza. It offers a thin crust pizza (not exceptionally filling) and it's kinda a seedy hole in the wall type place but it's just delicious. They have awesome calzones and a (fake) meatball sub that's pretty tasty. I also enjoy the fries that they coat in their own "secret seasoning" (there's definitely cinnamon in there) and they have a great (albeit incredibly oily and unhealthy) dessert offering of fried dough coated in powdered sugar. Give it a try the next time your hungry and in the Wheaton area. read more

A small hole in the wall type of place. Not the place to go for a date, but great to get a quick slice or two. Service is immediate and never too busy. Easy to park and pizza tastes pretty good. The Cajun fries are definitely a big seller and tastes great! read more

Answer to Lindsay H.'s question (in review below): The origin of the name Nut House Pizza is that the location used to be a Planters Nut store! The Planters Peanuts company built hundreds of peanut shops in the 1930s and 1940s. The most famous were the ones in Atlantic City and New York City. Several such stores still operate independently. In 1961, Planters decided to get out of retail and most of these shops started going by the name of Peanut Shoppe. read more

Best pizza in the universe. This place is a DC-area landmark that make's Ben's Chili Bowl feel like you're going to visit your old, smelly grandmother. Can't top the thin crust, the sweet sauce and the finely melted kosher cheese. Their seasoned french fries also rival the best boardwalk fries in town. Walking in that establishment immediately makes your mouth water and makes you wonder why you've eaten food anywhere else. read more

A friend and I went to Nut House Pizza tonight in search for a decent, reasonably priced pie--and we found it at Nut House (I would love to know the origin of the name...). The atmosphere is very casual, with self-serve drinks in the fridge and we found ourselves sucked into a cage fight on the TV. The pizza we ordered (half white, half pepperoni--note that they are kosher and use veggie meats, which I don't mind)was delicious--the crust perfectlly crisp and the cheese melted just right. Disgusting pizza, and even more disgusting behavior by the owner! We got to the restaurant and ordered the lunch special with a Diet Coke to go and were charged $8.95. On the way out we noticed the sign on the window read "lunch special $5.85 (2 slices of pizza, small fries and soda)" After going in to tell the owner he walked outside to look and said "who put that sign there?" (a sign which was on the inside of the window), and proceeded back inside to take it down, with us waiting. Not only was there no apology, but he refused to pay us the difference, and said "give me back the food and I'll give you back your money" my dad replied that I was already eating it in the car, and the owner then replies "So give me back what's left of it" . . . As we left he followed us out with the sign in hand to get rid of it somewhere. . . The pizza itself was just plain bad, somehow both soggy and dry all in the same slice, yuck! Its an acquired taste, but the sweet sauce does get kind of addicting. Downsides though mostly have to do with the physical space-rather small and definetly not as clean as I would like restaurants to be. Nice place to go with the guys, but I dont think its an optimal 'date' place read more
