The best NY style bagels in Montgomery County. They are chewy, well covered in whatever you ask for (e.g. onion, everything, etc.) They make a great scallion and cream cheese spread and a really good whitefish spread. They sell lox in two sizes so if you want it just for one or two people get the small or for more the large. They do deli style carry out by the bagel if you just want a sandwich. Goldberg's has always been a solid consistent choice for high quality bagels. If I had to get nitpicky... I do think their Rockville location is just a TAD bit better. But I also haven't had a bad bagel from this location. The Rockville Bagels are just a bit exceptional as they bake them right at that location throughout the day. The gentleman at the counter actually told me that they get one daily delivery from their Rockville location as they just don't have the infrastructure there to cook bagels at that location. No harm, the bagels are still delicious, but I would say to get the best bagels from that spot - you want to go earlier in the morning. I ended up getting an egg bagel with scallion cream cheese. I had to avoid seeds as I had just had some dental work done lmao. I know TMI. But my go to would definitely be an everything bagel or a sesame bagel. But I'll tell you what, that egg bagel was DELICIOUS. The morning that I went, the gentleman behind me asked the guy at the register if they were aware that they had just been featured in the Washington Post that morning as one of the top bagels in the D.C. area. I have been to Goldberg's many times over the years, and have had practically the same experience every time. Their bagels are fairly good (4 / 5 stars) and usually reasonably fresh. Service is very consistently UNfriendly, oftentimes bordering on downright surly--reasonably efficient but never welcoming. I would give them either a 1.5 or 2.0 for that. Seriously, would it kill them to greet their customers with a smile and interact with them in a way that makes them feel welcomed?! The bagels are good, however the staff, especially David, the short older guy with a beard and glasses, are humorless and cold. Once I went in to buy a dozen bagels and found that I was taking the last of the onion bagels. Joking that the bagels were now a precious commodity, I told David I was going to sell them for big bucks on eBay. With a straight face and a very serious tone he told me that bagels should never be shipped and were best when eaten fresh. I was astounded that he thought it was being serious and had absolutely no sense of humor. Another time I was there and asked whether their frozen bagels were sliced before freezing. David began lecturing me, saying that I shouldn't slice bagels before freezing them and that sliced bagels will get "ruined" and dry out in the freezer (Slicing and freezing is what I've always done and I've never found them to be dry). When I got home I researched whether or not what David said was true. Not surprisingly I found dozens of articles recommending that bagels be sliced and frozen. I also found several articles saying that freezing sliced bread and bagels can make them healthier by transforming their starch into "resistant starch" and that this process--freezing, thawing, and especially toasting--lowers the glycemic index, reduces blood sugar spikes by up to 39%, and improves digestion. When I mentioned this benefit to grumpy old David he angrily snapped that there was a lot of misinformation on the Web. Wow. My recommendation is that you go to Goldberg's for the bagels but refrain from conversation with the cold, humorless, and unfriendly staff. It'll only leave you with a bad impression. Update: I see that I'm not the only one that finds the staff unfriendly bordering on rude. I also see that Goldberg's has not responded to any of their customers' complaints. This means that they either don't read their reviews and therefore don't care about their customers' satisfaction. And so the rudeness continues. read more

First time here and stopped to get a quick bite. Saw some onion bialys that looked freshly baked and got some to go. Probably taste better warmed up, but it was pretty flavorful. I stopped by to try a couple of their bagels after completing some errands in the area: +a plain with veggie cream cheese +a plain with scallion cream cheese The bagels were more on the chewier end, and I didn't get the light crisp of the exterior as others have mentioned; the cream cheese was fine, and I wished it had more of the scallions or the veggies mixed in which made it more distinguishable from plain cream cheese. If I were to return, I am curious to try out their Original Breakfast Burrito, their Spicy Burrito, and possibly their Nova Lox & Cream cheese bagel. The staff was very friendly and efficient, and there were a handful of tables inside to dine in. Many seem to stop by to get their orders to go. This is in a great location for those that commute into Downtown DC bc it is right by the exit on to 16th Street from Georgia Ave. I called in my order of a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel and it was ready five minutes later when I arrived to pick it up. I LOVE NY bagels and one of my favorite brunch items when I have time is lox with capers on everything. I try it everywhere and am usually disappointed. Not Goldbergs. It's truly a hole in the wall. Parking is kind of tight but there are about ten spaces out front. The owner works here and yes the bagels are made fresh daily at the Goldbergs in Rockville (also far). I toast my bagel when in doubt. Here it's not necessary. The crisp outside and soft inside of these perfectly salted and seasoned bagels makes it completely unnecessary. This was so good, I spent very little time eating it lol. Wolfed down is an adequate descriptions what happened here TODAY. I've tried several bagel cream cheese combos and NEVER been disappointed. It's all so good. It's definitely at least as good as Bageltowne which is far. I live in Shepherd Park so this is my backyard spot. The owners are usually here. Today they were walking around wiping things down and making sure the shop was tidied after what I assume was the morning rush. The customer service is superb and they can tell you about anything on the menu! Their bagel selection is tremendous. I should not take a few pumpernickel bagels for later but I'm not sure that I can resist. The oat bran bagel is calling my name and the selections of CREAM CHEESE?!? I'm so glad this isn't on my usual morning commute. I'd be the size of a barge! The point of this review is: come to Goldbergs. It's a tiny dive with fewer than 15 tables but the FOOOOOOD. Take it out, eat it in, but enough to share with friends, but if you love bagels, come to Goldbergs! P.S. my husband says to try the soy bacon on the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. Lox, capers, a scallion cream cheese schmear on an everything bagel is the set up, folx. Barely toasted, because these babies are fresh and you don't need much more to get a little crunch. I'm hesitant to write this negative review because these bagels are certified kosher and I like to support my community. But they've ruined the bagels and bialys. Since the Rockville location opened (2005?) they used to make classic New York bagels (with the dough shipped in from the NYC area), crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I say used to because over the past year both the bagels and bialys have been soft and fluffy. No more shiny crust. You have to toast them to make them worth eating, even when they're fresh and warm. I suspect they changed the dough or how the bagels are made to make them more like competitors' inferior products. This has been the case since shortly after Goldberg's placed a lowly 7th on a ranking of local bagels reported by Washingtonian magazine published in April 2022. The know-nothings at Washingtonian used "soft" as a superlative to describe higher-ranking bagels three times. My feeling is if you want soft bagels (Are you toothless? Are you a newborn baby?), just buy the frozen product from your local grocery. read more

If you have been following me for some time, you should know I have been craving good New York bagels. I have not had that since I left Winchester, where Royalicious was only a half hour away and gave me a great experience taste-wise. Unfortunately, Royalicious is now an hour away, and during the summer food can get moldy in the car after a long drive, so I need something closer. After hearing much hoopla about this place, I figured to give it a try. I mean, New York bagels, in a Jewish part of town, closed Saturdays, you figure you have to be doing something right, right? Knowing how busy bagel joints can be, I trekked (hardly, it was a 20 minute drive from Falls Church) out to Silver Spring to get myself a few things to see it for myself. My first impressions were good. Easy drive, easier location. Cars were already filling into the parking lot before 7 am (which is when it opens on Sunday) of customers waiting to get their morning fix. And yes, I did see some Orthodox Jews in the line as well. All the more encouraging was I saw an Orthodox Jew behind the counter helping out, which really made me feel at ease. After that, well, the tide turned. Sure, they were efficient, and the interior took me back to a bagel store I am familiar with from New York/New Jersey. The prices were fair, and the customer service was friendly, and I could not wait to try these things when I got home. Okay. Was it the worst bagel ever? Absolutely not. Was it the best bagels ever, like they said it would be? Absolutely not. That is exactly what they were, just okay. No frills, just a simple crafted bagel and they have all the flavors you would expect a New York/New Jersey bagel shop to have. Then the experience took a dive. I found out that they DO NOT make their bagels on site. They get them from a bagel shop in New Jersey (when I asked, they did not know where in New Jersey - bummer), frozen, and they just cook them. No ovens, no boiling water, nothing. To me, that is "cheating" - not cooking your product on-site. Unless they are referring to the dough itself, a great bagel is born in the place it is made - not just redone. It also creates a sense of feeling and wonder. Here, I just saw boxes of boxes of bagels stacked up and then just dumping the bagels into their respective baskets. Not quite what I was hoping to see for a well-renowned bagel joint. While at least I have bagels for the week, I will still keep looking for that elusive bagel joint. read more

I have been coming to Goldberg's for a number of years, mostly at their Cabin John location before they closed a few months ago and now have been going to their Rockville location. The bagels are pretty decent decent but some are very distorted- almost more hole than bagel. While I always thought bagels were a little high priced, the cost has now skyrocketed to $1.40 and the store is frequently out of many bagels by late morning. Some other items such as their tuna salad, which is just some tuna and a few veggies is over $10.00. I also find that the tables are frequently not cleaned so I often have to clean them myself if I eat there. I try to support kosher establishments but this one may be off my list of places to go. All their meats are plant based, so that was awesome. Hadn't had a Philly cheesesteak since I gave up meat 12 years ago. It was a small sandwich for the price, but enjoyable. There were 2 major downsides to the visit. One: they had like 5 bagels total. For the sake of bagels, we bought 2 anyways. They rang us up, put our bagels in a bag and handed them to us. When we asked if they could toast them, they said no. His excuse was that they had already rung us up, and for them to toast the bagels, they would have had to ring them up like sandwiches and charge us more, which he wasn't going to do, so too bad, we don't get toasted bagels. Which leads me to the second point of disappointment with the visit: racism. I was wearing a kuffiyeh (because, you know, Free Palestine) and the owners of the shop, including the obese man that helped us, are Jewish. We're very aware that Zionism is not Judaism, so we hold no grudges against the religion of Judaism. But apparently, this man has a hatred for Palestinians and Palestinian supporters. As we waited for our Philly cheesesteak, we chatted with other awesome Jewish guys in the shop. But the people behind the counter couldn't hide their disgust with us.
