After reading all the negative reviews (from last year) about the angry & grumpy owner at this place, I hesitated trying it out until a few months ago. I was pleasantly surprised all staff there were so friendly & nice ! Today is the 4th time I came back for the yummy bagel sandwich & their house coffee. The service was accurate and friendly. I was buying pastries and some pretty cake slices. The red velvet was fine. There was a very chocolate cake (prettier than it tasted) and a key lime tart that was OK (and very tart). I bought 2 elephant ears and should have returned them. Very disappointed. They were huge and looked light and flaky, which fooled me as they were very dense and hard. Inedible. I threw them away. Not thrilled with myself for that and my company was disappointed. I bought 2 bagels which were good and chewy and fresh, thank goodness. My overall opinion is that I spend more than $40 on things that were prettier than they tasted or went to the trash. There are 2 of these in Maryland. The one in Gaithersburg is a treat. They are real bagels. I am also passionate for hard rolls (look like kaiser rolls but are not) The hard rolls are hard on the outside and soft as a pillow on the insde. Perfect for a roast beef sandwich. Then there is the dark side. The Olney location. The Olney location doesn't have hard rolls unless you order ahead. I tried but never got the hard rolls. I like that you can get end of day bagels for a price that's much less than their menu price. But I have to say when you go in and you pick these up, they usually seem to be very rushed and almost like they don't appreciate the fact that you're coming in and getting them at a discount Today however I was super hungry and decided to order a sandwich. $12 for a sandwich these days isn't a ridiculous amount but also it's not super cheap. I would rather pay an extra two or three dollars and get a real sandwich that's gonna satisfy my hunger then a super thin sandwich that hardly does anything and I'm still left hungry afterwards. This is the best place for bagels in the area, no doubt. The bagels are always fresh, cooked correctly (middle is moist and slightly crusted on the outside). Breakfast bagels are substantial (typically have to split with another person) and they have a ridiculous variety of other cookies/pastries. I used to love Panera's bagels until I tried Royal bagel in Ollney, Maryland. They blew Panera's out of the water. They are so good and I got them around 2:00 in the afternoon and they tasted fresh and had a good bite to them (texture). I keep them in my refrigerator and they hold up very well in a ziplock bag. I also recommend if you're a pepper head their hot pepper cream cheese but the vegetable cream cheese is tasty too. read more

I visited this bakery today for 1/2 dozen bagels and when I returned home the order was incorrect. I chose to return to bakery and ask for refund or new, correct order and requested, as a customer-centric business, to comp me a few bagels for my inconvenience...the manager proceeded to berate me, telling me to shut up (3x) and almost denying me a refund. Owner is a rude, no customer service skill DB who needs to learn how to speak and deal with the public. After his employee, who was not paying attention and could not focus for 2 minutes, totally messed up my very simple order, even 6 bagels to go, which he bagged himself, became rude and arrogant when he was called out on his error. Then the owner, acting very rude and arrogant, starting yelling at me and at one point, after they had finally corrected my order, told me, "You have your bagel not just get out of here". What business owner who is totally in the wrong would ever say that, other than of course someone who is rude and arrogant. The best thing was there was another customer standing there when the owner started yelling after the guy who screwed the order up was arguing with me about what I did or didn't say and he spoke up and said, "Look dude, you were not even here for the first exchange this gentleman had with your employee who was very rude to him so you don't even have a clue as to what's going on or what you're talking about, but right now you are the one being very rude to this customer who had his order messed up by your rude employee and now you're acting like it's not a big deal and seems like you don't even give a crap. If this is the way you run your business I won't be back. This owner needs to be put in check. I will not be back and I will take my business and dollars elsewhere. read more

All I want to know is what kind of bagel place charges customers to slice a bagel in half? I ordered half a dozen bagels and asked to have them sliced in half. I was told it would be 10 cents/bagel to slice them. That's probably to stupidest thing I've ever. I told them to nevermind--I'd slice them myself at home. The girl behind the counter turned around and said sarcastically under her breath "it's so expensive". No miss, it's not expensive. It's the principle. Way overpriced. You cannot order a bagel with cream cheese and nova. You have to order a "platter" with onions and tomatoes so they can charge you $15, or $16 if you want any cream cheese other than plain. Pastries are also higher priced than usual. The pinwheels were buttery and not too sweet, with a hybrid of shortbread cookie and pie crust texture. Absolutely so happy I found this place!! I randomly met a delightful lady in line at the HoneyBaked Ham store as I patiently waited to pick up a Thanksgiving protein augmentation to the turkey already being cooked at home. She is a lifetime resident of the area and regaled me with many a tale of the DC region's history...and a secret neighborhood spot: Royal Bagel Bakery. You must understand I am a creature that has encountered an uncomfortable stage in life: I tend to have more money than time...and I rarely budget my free time as efficiently as I should. Apparently The Boss looks after fools such as me and He put Royal Bagel Bakery right in my path. Even though they conspicuously warned patrons that holiday pie orders should be made in advance, I swallowed my pride and went up to inquire if any pies were available. Excelsior!! The delightful young lady behind the very busy counter (I was in line a solid 10 minutes, owing to the line of very knowing patrons) told me that they DID have a selection of pies that were not committed. With that happy news in hand, I picked up an apple and a cherry pie. I can't yet attest to the taste but, man, did they look inviting in the box. I have tried coming here at least 10 times and every time I have received my order it was missing one or more items. Even when the receipt clearly states what goes on the sandwich. Asking for double toasted and not getting it toasted at all is ridiculous. Asking for cream cheese and getting none is very sad. Didn't even realize there were not one, but two of these awesome bakeries around. The Olney location is more convenient for me than Germantown. It's hard to beat sandwiches this fresh for a fair value. If you can make it past the giant display case of amazing looking pastries, cookies, and other desserts you will find very friendly and accomodating service and a small eat in area. Don't let the name fool you, they make so much more than bagels! Haven't had an occasion to need a platter for a party or work function since finding this place, but they also seem to have a good variety for those orders too. Definitely will be coming back to try more! Busy times may be a little tight in the parking lot, it's the shopping center by the Olney library and post office, but probably not a big issue most of the time. read more

The hot italian sandwich is banging! I got it so many times while I worked at the pharmacy next door that the staff knew I'd always get it... I always added bacon, but getting it on a toasted cheese and herbs bagel or the four cheese and bacon bagel was money. i like to eat my sandwiches with potato chips; adds crunch and sodium... The chicken caeser salad was on point too-- lots of dressing and a fairly large size. Sometimes I'd get the cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese. It's pretty darn good... I've tried the baja chicken wrap and roast beef sandwhich before. They were okay, but not spectacular. Prob need to get double meet in the baja chicken wrap. I can't believe this place only has 3 stars. That is upsetting to me. We've picked up food here at least once a week since we moved to the area and everything we've ever gotten has been amazing. Their sandwiches are filled with meat and so good, especially the Friday special and the reuben. Their lattes are super tasty. Their bagels are great and, unlike another reviewer, I've found they keep quite well left alone in their bag... Like, still fresh 3 days later. Their toasted coconut donut is amazing. Their egg and cheese on a croissant is, for whatever reason, the best I've ever had. If you order the daily special sub, it comes with a side (haven't tried the macaroni salad but their potato salad is bomb) and a donut (again, toasted coconut is where it's at) for a very reasonable price. A lot of complaints seem to be able their pastries and for those I can't vouch (we are committed to Passion bakery in Sandy Spring). But definitely stop in for breakfast or lunch - you won't be disappointed! read more
