History of Present Indulgence: Wife and I came for breakfast after dropping our dog off at Germantown Veterinary Clinic. This was our first visit. Physical Exam: Food - I ordered the special four cheese bacon bagel that they had on special with tomato and scallion cream cheese. My wife got a plain bagel with scallion cream cheese. It was all impressively reminiscent of a NY bagel. Great density, chew, and crust. The cream cheese was administered generously. Ambiance - The establishment presents as a classic New York bodega with a deli counter layout -- compact, no-frills, and entirely appropriate for its intended function. Great place if you want something with quick service and great food. Service - Quick, functional, and to the point. No complications noted. Assessment: A neighborhood gem and so thankful we stumbled upon it. Royal Bagel Bakery delivers an authentically New York bagel experience in an otherwise unlikely corner of Germantown, Maryland. One downside is they got very plain coffee, but it's the type of place where I'm looking at the coffee purely as fuel, and nothing more. Can't say enough about this bagel and bakery. The generously portioned sandwiches are delicious, the variety is impressive, the staff speedily handles the rush. My nova bagel with all the trimmings was nearly flawless There's very limited and basic indoor seating and some outdoor tables if the weather is nice. But the focus is on the baked goods. I'm really not a big fan of this place I have tried it a few times over the years since it's so close to my house. The bagel itself is pretty good not sure if it's made fresh in house but the egg for the breakfast bagel sandwich is low quality definitely not fresh crack egg like I enjoy. I Would recommend Bethesda Bagel over this any day. Having grown up in New Jersey with two excellent bagel shops in town I am kind of a snob when it comes bagel breakfast sandwiches. I've been coming here for close to 10 years. I feel like the quality of the food has been on the decline for a while, and today will be my last visit. Again today, as on other recent visits the bagels were stale and the cookies worse. I ended up throwing away most of what I purchased. It's a bakery so I would expect baked goods to be fresh. The cookies at $20/pound were not fresh for the 2nd time in a row. I got the sprinkled tips with jelly inside, plain with raspberry and chocolate dipped. All were hard. I ate a couple and threw the rest away. About 1/2 pound. The bagels were not fresh either. Got a poppy and a salt. I used to enjoy coming here but no longer. To the owner: What has happened? The bagels were fresh, the service was fast and friendly and the place looked like a bagel shop with lots of other pastries displayed. I got there at 3pm, right on time for bagel 'happy hour' (who knew?). The special was but 1/2 dozen, get one free. NICE!!! read more

I planned a Celebration of Life for my husband in Md as I live in SF. My niece recommended Royal Bakery as she uses them for many events. I ordered the Jewish Delight Platter ($170.) and the Lg. Brunch Sweet Platter ($85.) She raved about the Choc. Cigars. The platter comes with other items along with cookies. When the guests started eating the deserts, the Cinnamon Sticks, Strawberry and Choc. Cheese puffs, and the Horns were extremely dry. The cookies were fine. Because my niece knew this was not normal, she recommended I call them. I spoke to 2 people; one was a woman manager. I told her that I felt the items may have been a few days old. She told me they were made the day before. Maybe they were left uncovered which is why they were dry. She told me the only thing she could do was to tell the owner, but nothing would be done. No offer to take my name or phone # for a call back. Again, I told my niece what their response was. Royal Bakery has lost a good, return customer. They also have delicious sandwiches and make cakes. I always come to get my turkey sausage, egg, and cheese on a toasted bagel and it always hits the spot. 10/10 will recommend! Their Ruben sandwiches are so good too! Service is great! They take your order then will call you when it's ready. They only have a few tables and they're usually taken up if they're busy. Stopped here on a Saturday late morning for lunch. Being a first timer - it reminded me of a deli/bagel shop you'd encounter in Manhattan. Plenty of pastry cases with cakes, cookies, bagels, etc. Looking for a deli sand I had a hard time just finding a turkey sandwich - so I went with a Canal St - Turkey, thousand island, lettuce and tomato on wheat. This was good - but the bread wasn't toasted or toasted enough - so the dressing made it quite messy - which rushed me eating it. Not really complaining just explaining. I noticed B&W cookies so I ordered one as well. Not bad - though the cookie part tasted quite bland. Overall good - would return and recommend. read more

Got a bagel toasted with "hot pepper" cream cheese. MISTAKE-- if you are from the mid Atlantic! Bagel -even though toasted not crusty in anyway. Hard and doughy. Cream cheese is a shame---they basically took a jar of pickled hot red peppers, chopped it up and mixed in with cream cheese---so the cream cheese is vinegary. Totally destroyed the cream cheese, as well as the bagel. I would've had them remake it, requesting them to double toasted with plain cream cheese. But I was in a hurry. Service good. read more

Today although the breakfast bagel sandwich was specifically ordered "without cheese" it had cheese on it...even though the person taking the order repeated back the "no cheese" instruction. Date of visit: Saturday 10/28/23 Food: I've had the oreo cupcake, Apple fritter, 42nd street sandwich, cinnamon swirl, oreo cake donut, chocolate cake donut, glazed donut, apple turnover, and glazed cake donut. The main standouts for me are the Oreo cupcake and the 42nd street sandwich. The Oreo cupcake is one of the best cupcakes I've had and the frosting is too good. The 42nd street sandwich is pretty good but it's a lil pricey for the portion of food you get. I've been going here for almost 10 years. Truly everything about this place has gone downhill, but today was the last straw. I went in on August 29th at 2:48 PM and I needed a dozen bagels, I was slightly too early for the bagel happy hour for a dozen deaI and I politely asked if they could honor it. When the staff said no, it wasn't the answer it was the tone and rudeness of the staff when they told me they couldn't honor the 3:00 happy hour deal. What is going to happen in the next 12 minutes? The bagels all sell out? Nobody else was in there? I get the deal not technically starting yet, but don't be a jerk about it, it was only normal to ask if any exceptions are ever made? What we got: Cherry turnover - 3* nothing spectacular here. We wouldn't order it again. Chocolate cigar - 3* a bit dry on the ends. It got better towards the middle but it wasn't really that great. I wouldn't order it again. Ham, egg, and cheese (added hot pepper cream cheese) on everything bagel - 3.5* I was really excited for this bagel. They have two kinds of ham: breakfast ham which is bigger and thicker, and lunch ham which is thinner and shredded. If I didn't know the lunch ham was shredded I would've thought this ham was the lunch ham. Other than that it was a pretty good sandwich. I really, really liked the hot pepper cream cheese. Royal bakery is a DMV must! - its been down the street from me my whole life but has recently become a part of my bi-weekly schedule. I love getting their turkey, egg and cheese on an everything bagel toasted. The cheese gets nice and gooey and it stays warm even during my 30-40 minute drive to work. Service is quick and kind, they have a good system set up! The inside is small, there's about 5-6 tables so I've always taken to-go. They do holiday themes too, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's, Easter... I've never ordered for these but I've seen the cupcakes/cookies and they're super cute. Their almond filled baked bread is sweet and flaky. Great stop for a quick breakfast or sweet treat! read more

I recently went for a deli sandwich, which was delicious! I ordered the ham and cheese "Villager" sandwich with Swiss cheese and deli mustard. The crisply toasted wheat bread set off the melted cheese and ham beautifully. The counter help took my order quickly and my sandwich came up shortly after. The dining area sports new marbleized tabletops in a compact area. The pastries looked too scrumptious to leave behind, so I ordered a chocolate cigar. These used to be brimming with chocolate filling and a fudge frosting that one could dream about afterwards! The current pastry looked the same, but had absolutely no chocolate flavor! I couldn't imagine how that did that! Warming it up helped slightly, but this is the biggest disappointment. I definitely won't be getting another one anytime soon! read more

We've been ordering from this Bakery previously for more than 21 years but the quality has been steadily going down while the prices have been steadily going up! Even though, I came in to order three sandwich platters and another platter of cookies. They had no brochure, photos, or price list available for me to view. They told me to let them what I was interested in and they would give me a verbal quote. No info online online either. What kind of craziness is this? No photos? I can't see what I'm getting? I'm supposed to order without seeing what their platters look like? I turned around and left remembering why I stopped going to this place... Marched right over to Giant Food and got a beautiful 24 count sandwich platter for $44 with nice choice of sliced deli meats on mini knot rolls and another 24 count mini croissant platter for $39 filled with choice of chicken salad, seafood salad, or tuna salad (Mini's are equivalent of 1/2 a sandwich). By comparison, Royal Bagel wanted to charge three times as much. Royal platters were about $14 per whole sandwich and Giant Food price was about $1.80 (or less) per mini sandwich. (Two mini's equals a whole sandwich). I'm truly disappointed in what this deli has become. Outrageous pricing and downgrade in quality. Really sad from what it used to be. Mehhh this place has gone downhill IMO. We didn't go during "covid time" because of the silly rules but we just came back recently and neither of us were impressed. BEC on a bagel had 1 small egg. I asked for well done bacon & it wasn't well done. My husband got the Penn Station, no tomatoes, and they added tomatoes and didn't add the hot peppers it was supposed to come with. As someone who worked in delis before, these are just careless/cheap mistakes. Realistically there are much better options in the area for breakfast/lunch - go somewhere else unless you're in a pinch. 3 stars because they do have donuts, cookies, pastries etc. also, and those were good in the past. read more

We got breakfast sandwiches I got the sausage egg and cheese on an Egg Everything Bagel I don't know why more bagel shops don't make this style bagel but it is a game changer. This sandwich was so good a little dry but nothing a little onion cream cheese didn't help out which is also house made. Bagels here are the best!! The owner is the best and if you come at the end of the day, there use to be a discount on the bagels. I am not sure they still do that. The veggie cream cheese has fresh veggies in it. It is my favorite! But let me tell you about the desserts! Do not go in if you have a weakness for sweets. I found my new cannoli spot that doesn't involve driving to Baltimore! On Saturday morning, I decided to pick up several treats for breakfast to share with my husband. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a sundried tomato bagel, a Choco Cigar, Raspberry Horn, and a cannoli. All were delicious. Stopped by to pickup a SEC bagel, and it's average at best. The jelly donut however was good, but it's gotten smaller over the past few years.
