The situation was desperate. A year and a half outside of my once golden highlights and almost six months post-cut, I was ready for some work to be done. My only solace was Yelp - and the people who write these reviews - to help me avoid a 4th mistake at the hands of an under seasoned stylist. And that's when I found Todd. His name isn't one you'd normally see every day, and the name "Nue" just seemed to speak to me: something new. Try it, you might like it. Try something....Nue? I was absolutely surprised when I heard his voice answer the phone. I didn't figure it was him at first - but when I told him I'd been referred to a "Todd", he instantly responded that he was in fact the man with magic hands...in the flesh. Sort of. Wow, I thought... he answers the phone. How cool is that in a city where even assistants have assistants? I have to admit, I was a bit nervous, but he calmed me right down. Very level headed, easy to talk to and even easier to book an appointment with. Apparently, Todd lives and works at his own studio, allowing him the ability to make appointments in the evening - sometimes late - to accommodate his clients. Perfect! I scheduled the appointment for a Thursday evening and drove up a couple days later. It was an hour drive from South Miami in rush hour traffic, but I had my iPod and great music so the drive didn't seem so endless. I just prayed that my experience would make up for it. Nestled in a classic art-district building with giant panes of glass and vintage decor, Todd's Nue Studio is welcoming and - lets just say it - a time warp. Think back to vinyl records, paper mache lamps and gold fabric colored sofas. Picture art in browns, blues and mellow tones with a flash of red and orange. When I got there, I met Caroline at the bar. Yes, their counter is a bar. She's sweet, pleasant and helpful. I was introduced to Todd right away - from across the room - as he scanned his parlor to see who this new girl was walking through the door. See, that's how Todd is; he knows his clients. And he didn't know me, but he certainly made his way to the counter quick enough to shake my hand and introduce himself. He's like a celebrity here on Yelp, but in person, he's a laid back guy with a great personality and a flavor for creating conversation. You think it? He'll talk about it. After reviewing my mane and toying with it a bit, he gave his honest opinion on what works with my hair type. He also mentioned that he has his own style - he cuts dry - but he assured me that he knows what he's doing and with the sincerity in his tone, I couldn't disagree. A brief cut and I was ready for Michael Angelo to rev up my color. He talked with me for a few minutes on what I was looking for and then came up with a great idea for some strawberry blond lights and some copper lows. Once my color was complete, I moved back to Todd for the finishing touches. As I sipped a frozen Sangria, he worked with my cowlick, trimming the bangs just enough so that they would hang right. He then applied minimal product and fluffed. We discussed a great lounge nearby and he offered up the information and an invite to an event in a couple weeks. I also walked out with a CD that Todd had burned himself, because the music was so freaking amazing that when we commented on it, he offered up the disc without hesitation... very cool in my book. Here's the highlights (no pun intended): - Studio is comfortable, vintage, not artsy but unique, full of great music and chatty people who make you feel right at home - Todd is experienced, educated and artistic; you'll be surprised just how intimate he can be with your hair. It's like a 6th sense. - Michael Angelo is a one-of-a-kind "mixologist" with a flair for blending color in combinations that make your hair pop while looking totally natural - Prices are by the hour but extremely reasonable, he only charges for the time he spends with you - He offers free bang trims for the next few weeks - just stop in and he'll touch it up for you - You will be extremely comfortable! If you're cool with an occasional swear word now and then, great conversation and a puppy sleeping in a dryer chair while you have your hair dyed, then this is the place for you! Am I hooked? Let me start this review by saying that I have curly hair (for you curlies out there I'm a 3C) and have bounced around from all kinds of salons (from dominican salons to high end places to Supercuts) trying to find someone who knows how to cut curly hair. I've literally walked into places and seen my stylist's face fall when they see my hair and what they have to work with. Once I was even left with a horrific mushroom haircut... but I digress. I saw the reviews for this salon and thought I'd give it a shot. A couple of curly girls wrote some positive things and I thought: 'one last try before I straighten the birds nest I have for hair.' I called, made an appointment for a haircut and color but was told that color wasn't going to be a possibility on the day I was to go in, understandable since I called on a Wednesday and my appointment was Friday. I arrived at the salon and it has a really cool atmosphere, very hipster. My stylist was Jason and without any preamble I have to say that he did a GREAT job. I knew the minute he said he'd cut my hair DRY that he knew what he was doing. He took his time and went curl by curl trimming my hair. Knowledgeable and a sweet guy to boot. I asked him if there was any chance of getting my hair colored and he told me he didn't do that but called in someone who did (Lily). I explained to Lily what I wanted done and she warned me the color might not take because of some previous color I had but that she'd do it. I have to admit that I am not in love with the color; I wanted to lighten my dark hair and I think only some of it took the color... I'm not sure if it's because of the previous dye job or what. Regardless of the color not coming out as I had hoped I am excited to go back and I'm pretty sure I've found 'the one.' I refuse to let anyone else cut my hair. After reading the reviews and at the insistence of a friend, I made an appointment with Carolyn at Nue Studio. From the moment I walked in I felt at ease and happy. The salon is really cool looking. I love the style! I felt like I was in a thrift store in NYC. The receptionist was sweet and offered me a diet coke, which I happily accepted. She introduced me to Carolyn and she was just the sweetest! We talked about my hair and she explained that she cut hair dry. She began to look at it and after a minute of looking over it she began to cut. While cutting she explained how she cut curly hair, which I found interesting. It took her about 30 mins to finish with my hair. She paid a lot of attention to detail and combed my hair every which way just to make sure that it was perfect. When she finished we talked about how best to style my hair. She gave me lots of tips on what to use so my curls looked defined. When I was getting ready to leave she gave me her cell phone and told me that if I was unhappy with it at all, or if it didn't look right when I straightened it out, to please call her and she'd take care of it without charge. She reassured me that I should feel comfortable to call, she just wanted to make sure that every client was happy. I simply adore her! I made an appointment to return in 2 weeks to dye my hair. I got to give credit where credit is due: Thank you Yelp for introducing me to my go-to Salon. Yes, the reviews are true- This place is the real deal. I get my haircut with D and I adore him. First off, he has the best spot in the salon- facing the window with a fantastic mirror. Besides that, he is extremely talented and knows hair. My hair has never looked better and I don't even have to work on it. He kept the length, but cut it in a way that my hair looks voluminous, full, and it air dies perfectly. When I tell people my hair is extremely thin, everyone swears differently. D makes my thin hair look like I was born with a serious mane. Can I ask for more? I also need to give a shout out to Jason. My boyfriend gets his hair cut with him and he looks so handsome (Ok, I am biased, but his hair does look 100 times better). Recently, D had Jason wash my hair. It was heaven on earth. The head massage I got was better than any I have ever received, and I love head massages! If you are lucky enough for him to wash your hair, God loves you. The salon itself is really cool. Always has adorable dogs hanging around and cool music playing. They have cute clothes in the front too. I haven't visited the spa yet, but it is definitely on my list. Okay, I will admit it. I have not written a review about this place because Nue Studio is almost too good to share. But I gotta stay loyal to the Yelp community and feel I must share my thoughts on this gem. Miami is not a city known for customer service, especially in the salon industry. I have been to so many salons over the years where they have been snobby, rude, and uncaring towards their clients. Nue Studio is the complete opposite of your typical Miami salon and the reason I love coming here. From the minute you walk in the vibe is laidback and cool. All of the staff I have dealt with are nice and pleasant from the receptionist, to the hair stylist assistant, to the stylists themselves. I always cut my hair with D and he does a great job but I have seen several other stylists work and they all do a good job so no matter who you get you will be in good hands. Things I love: -Their shampoo chair is the most comfortable one I have ever sat in. Usually they hurt my neck but not this one. It is so comfy I fight off falling asleep when I am in it. -The girls that wash your hair do a great job and take their time. They give great scalp massages too! -Stylists are always on time. I have never waited more than 5 minutes to be seen. -They send a text reminder for your appointment which is very convenient. The only drawback is parking. It is in a busy area of Wynwood that only has metered parking so be sure to give yourself a few extra minutes to park. Over three months ago my mom brought me to this salon to get a treatment done. My hair is very curly and hard to control and very fine and long. Todd, gave me a keratin treatment, and I loved it. First time in my life to have silky, shiny, healthy straight hair. Todd told me if I liked having straight hair he would recommend the "Japanese treatment on my next visit. Knowing I was coming home from college for a quick holiday break, I asked my mom to make an appointment for us both. We both had an appointment on Wednesday and wow was Todd busy. The day before a holiday everyone wants to look good. He took his time giving us undivided attention. He gave me the Japanese treatment, which should last about one year and my hair looks great. Very healthy, and straight. Afterwards, he gave me a haricut. Because my hair is so fine and long he put some much needed layers in it, to give it some thickness, and a nice new haircut. Todd, is terrific. He does fantastic work, and I am so very happy with my hair. So many hairdressers do not know how to deal with my type of hair but Todd makes it look so effortless. So call me a snob but I'm really hard to impress when it comes to my hair- I have A LOT of it and am a total freak about it. I have gone to Nue Studio 2xs since I moved to Miami and have seen Carolyn both times. The final product has been FANTASTIC! I get all over color and a cut-the great thing about it is that Carolyn is as particular and "ocd" about hair as I am! You don't leave the salon if it's not perfect, regardless of what other reviewers may say- I'd assume they think great color comes from a box and a fab cut from Supercuts in a strip mall. Carolyn also promises that if the cut just doesn't work after a few days or :::gasp:: my color oxidizes blue or red ( I dye it black) that I can come in to have it fixed. It's great to have that safety net, but what's even better is to not have to use it! Oh and their music is incredible! read more

Todd is a genius! I have never in my 24 years of life have had a better experience at a salon as I did at my first time at Nue Studio. The staff was very personable and skilled. I was attended to immediately and didnt have to wait the usual extra hour after my scheduled appointment that I have to endure at most salons. Fortunately I was able to book an appointment with Todd during his week in Miami. I had never had a dry haircut done before, but I dont think I can ever go back to wet cuts. Todd knows how to bring out the best in your hair and tells your exactly what he thinks will look good, not just what you want to hear. It was very refreshing! I am the type of girl who HATES change. I have been flying from Florida back to New Jersey every time I needed a haircut/color because I was scared to leave my stylist from home. The key word "WAS" until I met the lovely people from Nue Studio. (Queue standing ovation to Michael Angelo!) A colleague from work recommended I go there as I live in the building just above the salon and I am glad she did! Michael Angelo is a color GOD! His work is magic. He transformed me from a brunette to a blonde! He is super flexible with his schedule and will work past closing hours which is great because I never get off work until 7PM anyways. Just recently he stayed at the salon until 10:30PM doing my hair! What other hair dresser do you know that would do that?? ......Don't worry; I'll wait for an answer.... Truly, the anti-salon. Everyone was nice, the place was great. I was a little bummed that Todd was late, then he had to take care of personal things which delayed the cut-by-new-hairdresser-anxiety to an uncomfortable level. But... once he got going, it was great. I have curly hair. I like it that way. He was not digging it - and blowed out my hair with the promise that it was the way to looking more 'professional'- a request. Must give him props- it looks and feel great. I'm interested to see how it will look curly, but I'm confident. Todd definitely give the impression of being honest + capable + good. What more can you ask for? I found Nue Studio through Yelp and was coming here for the past couple of years and getting my hair cut with Todd and referred friends to the salon. I had been getting pretty consistent cuts, but my last few cuts just weren't up to scratch. It felt rushed, and as other reviewers have mentioned, T is more focused on catching up with those around him than on the hair he's cutting. During my last cut, I explained that I wanted to keep my layers longer and start phasing out the choppiness that the freehand layers had brought to my hair. My request was brushed aside (no pun intended) and I was told was that I couldn't have long hair without layers because it wouldn't look good. I walked out with a haircut done on auto-pilot. A few months later I decided to give another salon a try on a friend's recommendation. I told him I wear my hair curly daily, but since it is difficult to maintain I usually put it up in a bun. I told him I wanted anywhere from chin length to shoulder length. He got right to work. He began by straightening my hair. He told me that he needed to do this for precision. He cut off about 7 to 8 inches(a lot). He kept me calm and talked about his experience as a stylist. He has been doing hair for 25 years. He told me that he was very experienced with my type of hair since he is from Brazil. Within the hour he was done. It looked pretty choppy but he told me once I did it curly I would see the transformation. I definitely did see the difference. He recommended Bed Head-After Party, told me to look for the pink dildo looking bottle. He said that it was made for my hair and that his clients swore by it. I found the product for $17.00 at Walmart. I love that he recommended what products would work on my hair. He ensured me that if I did not like the hair cut, that I can come back and he would fix it at no charge. He gave me a great dry cut for my curly hair. I don't have one single complaint! My husband found this gem back in September and got a great haircut from Sashi. After a month or two he convinced me to give it a try. They booked me with D and he was wonderful. Just the right amount of nice & chatty. I got a Keratin Treatment which I expected to pay $225+ for and it ended up been $175 ... I was happy as can be! A month later I had my brothers wedding and decided to do hair color, highlights and a hair do. D happened to be in Georgia so I ended up with Sashi. Turns out I was just as happy. She did an excellent job. She listens very well! I got the exact results that I expected. Oh and she does make up as well! Last experience there was today. As I was checking out the reviews for the salon Todd Jameson Nue Studio I noticed they had a different approach and look. There location is in my favorite area of Miami in Midtown. Walking over to the salon I noticed the shop was hip and trendy. The store was very artsy with all the pictures on the walls and cd's pasted on the floor as decoration. I love the store and its look. Once upon a time, I made a promise on my Bardot review to Mr. Jameson that went something along these lines: "...I promise to visit his studio soon so he could work the same magic he was currently displaying on the turn tables on my head." After a year of traveling the world filming documentaries and being in debt to the man and higher education, I found myself in front of the mirror last Friday night contemplating what had become my hair-do (don't), which I had baptized "the nun do". It was time. I picked up my phone and dialed the number, giggled a bit, hung up and proceeded to follow directions by sending a text...10 minutes later I had a response from Todd that read "Woww yeah I remember you". My appointment was set, except I had no idea what I was going to do with my very long, thing, soft, boring hair. Tuesday comes around and I'm counting down the hours til my long awaited moment. I was actually nervous in a "like a virgin" sort of feel. I arrived early so Caroline offered me a seat on one of the swanky couches and offered me a glass of water while Todd finished his previous appointment. Professional doesn't begin to describe the experience. I like to think of Todd as a freelancer, he doesn't work for the man or doesn't do anything in a conventional manner, instead he goes into the story (or hair in this case), feels you out, takes the time to get to know you and works to get the best out of you. There is no way you are leaving the studio disappointed, the only thing that might throw people off is his modern/casual style of running his business...but I dig it, get with the times people! I also found out besides being a hair stylist, DJ, bartender and artist he is also a great hubby and dad....all that and a bag of chips. I'm so happy I found this place! I found Nue Studio via Yelp and the (good) reviews couldn't be truer. I get my hair done with Carolyn and she is awesome. Unlike other stylists I've been to, she actually listens to what you want and won't stop until your hair is PERFECT. SHE IS A PERFECTIONIST. When I first started getting styled with her we started out with just a cut. When I saw how great her work was, I then turned to her for color. My hair has never looked so healthy! I fork out the cash for this place because I have Kate Moss-thin, shitty white guy hair that requires expert treatment to look halfway decent. I go with Jason. He's a really nice guy, and snips a mean haircut. The damage here depends on who's cutting your hair, but usualy comes out to about $45/cut including tip. Granted, that's expensive for a men's cut, but it does come with a complementary cleanup that makes the cut last a few weeks longer. Pro-tip: come on two wheels or four legs if you own a horse. Turned out to be the most enjoyable hair cut I've gotten yet. Super chill, with Todd telling stories of Tokyo game parlors and French Quarter trannies and model shoots gone awry, while a bulldog nuzzled my leg to be pet. I walked out with a new book recommendation, a menu for a local place that's apparently good, and hair I was happy with. Note: it's not on most online maps yet because the area is new. Cozette did mine and my wife's makeup for our wedding last month (September 2011), and let me tell you, we were blown away. Neither of us really wear much makeup, and after consultations at MAC and Sephora where, despite my request that I *not* be made to look like a pirate hooker clown, I ended up looking like -- you guessed it -- a pirate hooker clown, I was really terrified that when Cozette said "natural" she meant some strange weird makeup artist version of natural. Well, she didn't. "Natural" meant we both looked bright and shiny [metaphorically speaking - no oily shine on our faces at all] and...well...natural. She seriously just made us look really good, in real life and in pictures. No pressure to do crazy stuff or false eyelashes, just nice simple enhancement of our natural good looks (ahem). We bought a bit of makeup - powder, lip liner, and lip gloss that was definitely worth it. I would go back in a heartbeat if I need makeup for another special event. read more

The amazingness of this salon started when I called to make an appointment and had a conversation with Todd about my hair and what I wanted to do, he told me how they cut hair there and he just made me feel excited. I also felt like I was talking to a famous person after reading all these reviews on yelp. So the day comes to cut and dye my hair and I'm greeted by Eddy, one of the most fabulous hair stylists I've ever met. He told me that he was going to do my color but that unfortunately due to my excess of hair I would have to go back on Monday because he wanted to do things right. After the many color catastrophes I've had I was more than pleased that he was being sincere with me and wasn't going to mix up a bunch of colors just to get the job done. So this day I just had my haircut done by Todd who cut it dry, ironed it, and then gave me the cutest up-do so that after a few hours I could let it down and have my hair in soft waves. It was very exciting, and my hair was still super long after the cut. Todd was awesome and I loved how he gave me tips on what to do with my hair. He also gave me an amazing CD, that I've become obsessed with. Three days later I went in for Eddy to dye my hair. He dyed it and gave me a color filler before to prevent my highlights from coming through the color dye. It was the best dye job I've ever had- it's been three weeks already since I went and it has yet to fade (this has never happened to me). While I was there I also decided to add on a few more layers to my cut and Eddy did an amazing job! He gave me many layers but still managed to keep my hair extremely long. He also added soft curls to my hair that I absolutely loved. Eddy's a fabulous stylist and very entertaining. Oh and P.S. Todd gave me another CD this time around- yay! Overall my experience was outstanding! The stylists here are the best in the business, the salon is beyond charming, and you will feel cool while you're in here and even more when you come out! I visited Nue Studio on 1/25/13. The studio is located at Midtown shops which houses some great little stores, this an ultra up beat setting and it took me only 5 minutes to park (which is awesome considering Miami parking can be hectic) On to the salon! I only have GREAT things to say about NUE STUDIO. The studio itself had a very urban-hippy flow. The staff was BEYOND nice and accommodating. I received the BEST haircut by the head honcho himself Todd. Now, I can understand the rave reviews. He was engaging and social, listened to exactly what I wanted and hit the hair cut on the nose! When my fancy salon in South Beach decided to significantly spike up their prices, I decided some place else was necessary. Being French, I'm very picky with the places I choose to cut my hair... simply because most places don't know how to cut straight hair correctly. They just buzz their way through every cut. Lucky for me, I found this little gem. The place is low key, not pretentious, and I've stuck with the same hair stylist since my first cut there almost 2 years ago. Cynthia is all about providing great service and she's a bubbly joy to be around. What a great experience I had. I definitely used yelp as a platform to getting my long mane chopped & so happy I had the ba**z to do it..... I had hair down to my hips & as you can see from the profile picture it is now just to the bottom of my neck. That being said, the salon itself is very rock & roll and ecclectic. Certainly NOT anything you would find in SoBe; they have a couch in the middle of the salon on a raised platform facing the chairs as your waiting area, lockerz as the stylists work station, skull art covering one entire wall, and CD's make up the floor - needless to say it's just a kool, funky, bada$$ spot! My stylist Sachi is the cutest little thing, she is from Japan and I can't say enough good things about the way she cut & styled my hair. Being a fellow asian definitely made me feel more at ease since this was a huge MONUMENTAL cut. I am definitely going back to her for all future hair appointments & have even convinced the future hubby to go there too. I had taken a hiatus from Nue Studio as the person I was using for color no longer worked there and I have recently returned to give it another try with Obi. I first made a consultation to take a look at my highlights and see what would need to be done. It wasn't a color correction per say but refreshing to have a full head of highlights with a few different shades of blonde. Obi also recommended a get a good cut with Miles to finish up my new look! I was very pleased with both as they equally listened to what I wanted and followed through. The pricing is definitely not cheap but there were no surprises as the price was what he said it would be during the consult. In addition, I thought that I should mention the customer service has improved immensely since the last time I was there 2 years ago. Everyone was welcoming with a smiling face and I felt like people actually knew what they were doing and liked working with each other. I am looking forward to returning again and again! Getting your haircut can be a stressful experience at the best of times. Getting your haircut in a strange city is pretty much just asking for trouble. Thanks to YELP I found Nue Studio! I have to admit that my expectations were set pretty low. The fact that I had no frame of reference for hair places in Miami, I kind of assumed that I wouldn't be getting a good haircut. I rationalized it that it was just hair and no matter what they did to me it will grow back...eventually. From the moment I walked into Nue Studio I knew that I was in good hands. This place was unlike any hair salon I had ever been to. It looked like a very cool cross between a modern art gallery and a cocktail lounge. The energy was great and all the staff were very friendly and totally down to earth. I think this has a lot to do with Todd himself. Despite the fact he was sporting a wicked cold when I met him, he exuded an air about him that spoke to his depth of experience all wrapped up in a really laid back persona. This brings me to Carolyn! She was fantastic and most definitely gave me the best haircut I have gotten in a very very long time. Not only did she take her time making sure that I was happy with my hair, but she was a pleasure to talk to. She listened to what I wanted and made me feel very relaxed and at home. I've been looking for the perfect stylist for many years and I finally found her! Her name is Carolyn and she totally gets me. I wanted a mod bob haircut but I have wavy hair, she was completely honest and told me that it might look bad if I didn't blow dry it everyday. I appreciated her honesty but decided to go for it. I just wanted to follow up with another review. I still go to Carolyn and still have Todd cut my hair. They are both still spectacular and Todd's haircuts last for months. I know that sounds unrealistic, but he cuts in a way that makes your hair grow out nicely and I've never gotten split ends, so you know he takes good care of his scissors. I am kicking myself in the ass thinking, "Why didn't I find this place sooner!" I came in with drab curls, haircut was cut wrong, color was terrible....so I needed therapy ASAP!!!! Like everyone else said, the vibe is cool. Cool music, cool decor, cool people, the front desk ladies are sweethearts and helpful! It took me a bit to find the place and you have to park and pay so plan for this. When I walked in Carolyn got right to work and she was fast. She was honest and straightforward which I love in a hairstylist. She cut it dry which is also a plus because with curly hair, cutting it too short can be a disaster but she knew exactly how and what to do. Yelpers, I finally found someone who knows how to cut curly hair!!!! I have been to many...many terrible places and this is the first time in a long time that its done right. Carolyn also did my color which left my hair shiny and new. She gave me her cell and told me that if I see anything wrong with the cut to call her. C'mon how many hair stylists do this? Updating original review. Michaelanelgo last time bleached the entire back of my 300 dollar Cavalli Shirt. Ruined it and didn't replace it. Also is not good at working with extension. I would avoid this salon if you have extensions and do not wear anything you don't want bleached. I won't be back there. The hair cuts by Todd are still ok though. The salon looks alot better in person than in the pics - its actually quite upscale and very clean. Some reviews cited mismatched chairs and random items for sale. However the chairs match, everything is new and its in an upscale building in Midtown. Its spacious and comfortable. The prices are very reasonable but I guess you get what you pay for. read more
